For over a year, there have been sporadic reports about the status of the young stars of Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire. First came rumors that Rubina Ali's dad was trying to sell her. Then news that Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail and Ali's houses were demolished. Then news that jetsetting and stardom were keeping the kids out of school, which could stop the stipend they get for their work on Slumdog. Finally, so-so news that Ali and Ismail continue to earn money even though they live in shantys due to "legalities."
After all of this turmoil, which is still on-going, director Danny Boyle has admitted that his young stars from the slums were exploited.

Slumdog Millionaire star Rubina Ali's autobiography has become such a big hit in Europe, she stands to net over $100,000 (GBP62,500) for her life story by May.
The child star, who grew up in poverty in India's slums, is suddenly rich thanks to her memoirs.
Ali, 10, received $32,515 (GBP20,320) as an advance for her autobiography, which was published in June, and she stands to make a further $80,000 (GBP50,000) more in royalties by the beginning of the summer, according to publisher Philippe Robinet at France’s Oh! Editions.
Meanwhile, Ali and her Slumdog Millionaire co-star Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, 11, have both landed roles in independent film Lord Owen’s Lady, which will shoot on location in Dubai and Wales.

There's a new article in USA Today about how Slumdog Millionaire star Rubina Ali has $145,000 in new deals. Surely this is meant to be the bright light at the end of a long tunnel of post-film troubles -- living in filth, shantys torn down, claims that dad was trying to sell young Rubina. But reading through the piece, it doesn't look like much has changed at all.
According to the article, Ali has "already committed to projects worth more than $145,000, and her family could soon move out of the slums and into a new apartment paid for by a trust set up by the film's director, Danny Boyle." She's also said to have gotten about $32,515 in an autobiography advance, with perhaps another $80 thousand by April. Meanwhile, Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail has landed a gig along with Ali in the indie film Lord Owen's Lady, which will net them roughly $1,626/day over 20 days of production.

Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle is withholding the trust fund he set up for the movie's young stars - until they finish their education.
The filmmaker set up the Jai Ho Trust for Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, 11, and Rubina Ali, 10 after their starring roles helped the film set box office records worldwide and scoop eight Academy Awards.
Last month, reports surfaced the pair was in danger of losing its monthly allowance because the kids had been skipping school upon returning to their native Mumbai, India.
And now director Boyle is cautiously waiting to deliver a lump of cash to the stars in case they don't graduate, according to Slumdog actor Anil Kapoor - who donated his salary from the film to the cause.
He tells the New York Post, "The majority of the money will be held back until they have finished their education."
Boyle encouraged the pair to get back into the classroom last month, adding: "We are disappointed that Azhar and Rubina's school attendance remains patchy. We have urged both families to honour their commitment to ensure regular school attendance."
In addition to the allowances, both children have been provided with new homes by the trust, after it was revealed Ali's shanty home had been destroyed.

Slumdog Millionaire child stars Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail could lose their trust funds set up by the film's producers. According to the terms of the agreement, the children must have a 70% school attendance rate, but both are currently below that number, reports Fox News. Are Slumdog Millionaire's youngest stars too cool for school? The benefactors who set up a trust fund for youngsters Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail and Rubina Ali to better their lives in the wake of the film's success said Thursday that the kids have skipped too much school and could lose their financial support. The terms of the Jai Ho Trust, set up by Oscar-winning director Danny Boyle and producer Christian Colson, stated that Rubina, 9, and Azharuddin, 11, show up for at least 70 percent of the school term. They've been receiving $120 monthly stipends and are due to receive larger sums when they turn 18. But right now, Rubina's attendance stands at 27 percent and Azharuddin's is 37...

The young stars of movie sensation Slumdog Millionaire are in danger of losing their allowance from a trust set up in their names, because they've been skipping school.
Producers created a fund for Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, 11, and Rubina Ali, 10, after their starring roles helped the film set box office records worldwide and scoop eight Academy Awards.
But they've repeatedly played truant since returning to their native Mumbai, India and failed to attend half of their classes, reports the Associated Press.
Trustees have told their parents they must attend school at least 70 per cent of the time or lose the monthly stipends they currently receive. They've also been warned the kids will miss out on a promised lump sum of money if they fail to graduate.
Their absence has been blamed on family deaths - but the movie's director Danny Boyle and producer Christian Colson have released a joint statement, encouraging their parents to ensure Ismail and Ali meet the expectations set for them.
It reads, "We are disappointed that Azhar and Rubina's school attendance remains patchy. We have urged both families to honour their commitment to ensure regular school attendance."
Besides the allowances they receive, both children have been provided with new homes by the trust, after it was revealed Ali's shanty home had been destroyed.

The winds of Hollywood move at a rapid pace, quickly replacing one drama with the next. The thing is, though, the drama doesn't go away. Earlier this year, the cinematic world was buzzing over the fate of the young kids from Slumdog Millionaire. There was the culture shock between Oscar fanfare and slum life, rumors about selling Rubina Ali for profit, and the demolition of their home.
Now The Associated Press reports that the kids could lose their trust fund. It's not a case of movie people jerkitude -- it seems that Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail is only going to school 37% of the time, while Rubina Ali only makes it 27% of the time. The claimed culprit: out-of-slum jetsetting. Trust administrator Noshir Dadrawala says: "They are constantly going to Paris and Cochin and Chennai. That's fine, but go over the weekend, not at the sacrifice of school." (For Ali, travel that's presumably...

Two of the "Slumdog Millionaire" young stars, Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, are heading back to the big screen. Recent report from WENN suggested that the child actors who took the role of young Latika and Salim respectively in the Oscars-winning drama could be starring opposite Anthony Hopkins in "Lord Owen's Lady".
While Hopkins' involvement in the movie is still under negotiation, Ali and Ismail have been signed to join its cast ensemble. It is still unclear what part each of them will carry out for this drama film, but Hopkins is in talks to play Lord Owen's father. This will be their first taste of working with a Hollywood star.
The casting rumor broke out just days after Ismail's father passed away of tuberculosis on Friday, September 4. While offering his condolences for the young actor, "Lord Owen's" executive producer Martin Pennell told Britain's The Sun,...

That makes one less real-life slumdog for the young cast of Slumdog Millionaire. Filmmakers this week began to make good on their much-publicized pledge to purchase homes for the child actors who appeared in the Oscar-winning film, buying a one-bedroom Mumbai apartment for the family of 10-year-old Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail. The house hunt was ramped up in recent weeks after the illegal shacks of both Ismail and 9-year-old costar Rubina Ali's family were bulldozed over in a government sweep of their slums. The deal was completed earlier this week as the Jai Ho Trust, set up by director Danny Boyle and producer Christian Colson with the purpose of educating and housing the young stars, provided the...

Slumdog Millionaire child star Azharuddin Ismail is ecstatic after leaving behind India's slums and visiting his new home for the first time.
Ismail, who was plucked from impoverished obscurity to star in the film, is preparing to move into his new residence after Indian government officials took him on a tour of the $7,820 (£5,215) property on Tuesday.
The 10 year old was made to live on the streets after his residence in the slums of Mumbai, India was torn down by authorities in May.
But now he cannot wait to move into the single-roomed property.
He says, "We can now sleep with a roof over our heads and we can leave the smell behind.
"It is so much larger than where we used to live and I am very grateful to Mumbai for giving me this house. I can't wait to move in but I will be sad to leave my friends."...

Slumdog Millionaire star Rubina Ali is writing her life-story - at the age of nine.
Ali was plucked from the slums of Mumbai, India to star in Danny Boyle's multiple Oscar-winning movie.
Since the movie's release, the young actress has travelled the world on a whirlwind promotional tour.
Just months after she returned home, Ali was left homeless when Indian authorities demolished her family home. Her father was also hospitalised after police allegedly beat him to force the family to leave their residence.
She has since been offered two new homes by the Indian government and a trust set up by Slumdog's filmmakers for her and young co-star Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail.
Ali's autobiography, Slumdog Dreaming: My Journey to the Stars, will be released in the U.K. and U.S. on 16 July.
A statement from publishers TransWorld promises, "(Ali) tells her own incredible story, from playing marbles with her friends beside the sewers of Garib Nagar in Mumbai, to dancing along to the Bollywood films she and her family watch on their old television set."...

The makers of "Slumdog Millionaire" met with the film`s two impoverished child stars Wednesday in Mumbai, but the father of one of the children stormed out of the meeting, saying they`ve been forgotten since the movie won eight Oscars.
Rubina Ali, 9, and Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, 10, both lost their homes this month as city authorities cleared out parts of the slum where they live.
Rubina has been staying with relatives and Azhar has been living in a makeshift shanty of tarps and blankets with his parents.
"We`ve been trying for a long time to move them into legal accommodation," director Danny Boyle told reporters at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences on the outskirts of Mumbai, where he and producer Christian Colson met the children and their families.
Boyle also said he plans to make two more films set in Mumbai. But Rafiq Qureshi, Rubina`s father, said Boyle has not done enough.

Slumdog Millionaire filmmaker Danny Boyle has bought a new apartment for child star Azhar Ismail after he was left homeless following the demolition of his shanty home in Mumbai, India.
The director and the movie's producers plucked Ismail, 10, and his co-star Rubina Ali, nine, from impoverished obscurity to appear in the Oscar-winning film and established the Jai Ho Trust last year to help fund their education.
But the kids' plight has captured headlines in recent weeks after both children's families were booted out of their homes and forced to live on the streets of India by local authorities.
Boyle and producer Christian Colson flew into Mumbai this week (begs25May09) to see how they could help the young stars.
And after meeting with several of the film's stars at the private lounge of the city's Jw Marriott hotel on Tuesday, Boyle announced he's purchased a new home for Ismail and is planning to do the same to put a roof over Ali's head too.
Boyle says, "The homes are a concern. That is one of the reasons why we built the trust."
A spokesman for the Jai Ho Trust describes Ismail's new apartment as "comfortable, in a good neighbourhood (and) near his school", with the property costing "upwards of two million rupees" - $42,000 (£28,000).

Danny Boyle doesn't need an Oscar-caliber script to create engrossing drama with his child stars—all he needs is an irate father. The Oscar-winning Slumdog Millionaire director today met with slum-dwelling child actors Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail and their families to discuss the status of the homes promised to them in the wake of the film's success. The issue has become even more pressing after the families of 9-year-old Ali and 10-year-old Ismail both lost their homes earlier this month in a premonsoon citywide razing of illegal shanties—shelters that amounted to little more than plastic sheets propped up by bamboo sticks. "We've been trying for a long time to...

Danny Boyle has jetted to India to help find a home for the displaced child stars of his Oscar-winning movie Slumdog Millionaire.
The director met with several of the film's stars at the private lounge of Mumbai's Jw Marriott hotel on Tuesday as part of his ongoing efforts to provide financial aid for the young actors.
Boyle established the Jai Ho Trust last year to ensure nine-year-old Rubina Ali and her co-star Azhar Ismail, 10, would receive financial backing to ensure their educations after plucking them from impoverished obscurity to star in his film.
But the children don't appear to be receiving any monetary aid - Ali was left facing life on the streets after authorities demolished her shantytown shack earlier this month, days after her co-star Azhar Ismail suffered the same ordeal.

Here's a treat: we have a lengthy deleted scene from the Oscar winning Slumdog Millionaire for you as an exclusive treat ahead of the film's DVD release next Monday. This sequence forms part of the childhood flashbacks, wherein we see Jamal (Ayush Mahesh Khedekar at this stage, later of course Dev Patel) and his brother Salim (Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail) making a living as thieves under the bleachers of the opera at Agra. We caught a glimpse of that in the completed film; in this deleted scene there's a much longer look at Jamal's experience there. The DVD's out on June 1 and was reviewed in the June issue of Empire, which is still (just about) on sale.

Step by step, this whole story gets increasingly more ridiculous and heart-breaking. We've already told you about the Slumdog Millionaire aftermath, and how young stars Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail and Rubiana Ali have struggled in their slum-filled, post-Oscars life. Then rumors popped up that Ali's dad was trying to sell her. Since then, just last week, Ismail's house was torn down and this week, MSNBC reports that Ali's has been demolished as well.
Rubina told The Associated Press: "I'm feeling bad. My house had been demolished. I'm thinking about where to sleep." And where are the houses they were promised back in February?
Award-winning films are great and all, as are realism, but none of us should accept entertainment over the welfare of those involved. It's bad enough when a language void and a desire for cheap labor leads to a Borat in Romania situation, but it's incredibly worse when it involves children.
