"I wasn't very good at having all this stuff locked inside of me..." MetFilm Distribution has revealed their trailer for Ronnie: The Edge of Everything, a documentary film about a sports legend named Ronnie O'Sullivan. Only some will recognize his name, as he is best known as a champion at the game of snooker (similar to billiards) and was famous in the 1990s. Facing the end of a wildly successful but turbulent career, snooker legend Ronnie O'Sullivan is finally keeping the game at arm's length. However over the course of a season leading up to a career-defining tournament, and triggered by memories of the past, he finds himself spiralling back into the sport's intense grip. Produced by David Beckham's Studio 99 and directed by Sam Blair, this is a film that pushes at the limits of sporting biographies, a layered and sophisticated story of a man grappling with his talent and his demons.

“King Richard” got a big boost in its bid for Best Editing at the Oscars with a win at the Ace Golden Eddie Awards on March 6. It prevailed in the drama race at these awards bestowed by American Cinema Editors over two of its Oscar rivals –“Dune” and “The Power of the Dog” — as well as “Belfast” and “No Time to Die.”
Another of the Oscar nominees, “tick, tick…Boom!,” won the comedy/musical category over the fifth Oscar contender, “Don’t Look Up,” plus “Cruella,” “The French Dispatch” and “Licorice Pizza.”
Since 1990, the film that came up with one of the ACEs went on to take home the top prize at the Academy Awards 18 times, including the 2020 winner for best drama editing, “Parasite.” And in nine of the 13 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, at least one of the Eddie champs was a contender for Best Picture. “Belfast,” “Dune,” “King Richard,” “No Time to Die” and “The Power of the Dog” have been nominated as the best dramatic film editing of 2021 by the American Cinema Editors, which announced the nominees for the 72nd annual Ace Eddie Awards on Thursday.
Those five films will compete in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category, while the field in Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy) will consist of “Cruella,” “Don’t Look Up,” “The French Dispatch,” “Licorice Pizza” and “tick, tick…Boom!”
The most surprising omission was probably “West Side Story,” while Ace Eddie voters also bypassed “Nightmare Alley,” “Coda” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”
Nominations for the editing of animated features went to the same five animated films that have also been nominated by the Cinema Audio Society, Motion Picture Sound Editors, Visual Effects Society and Art Directors Guild: “Encanto,” “Luca,” “The Mitchells vs. the Machines,” “Raya and the Last Dragon” and “Sing 2.

A revelatory documentary about the Liverpool stalwart, whose explanation of his career ups and downs make for fascinating viewing
Apart from a somewhat redundant top-and-tail sequence in which Steven Gerrard is seen putting his feet up in a plush La pad as he plays out his final months for the La Galaxy, there’s a lot to admire about Sam Blair’s profile of the former Liverpool midfield dynamo who is currently embarked on the Herculean task of restoring Rangers to their former glory in the Scottish Premier League. Football documentaries often sacrifice quite a bit in return for access to their subjects (and there’s certainly significant amounts of “legend/icon/genius” burbling in Make Us Dream), but it’s Gerrard’s own readiness to open up and reveal something of the agony behind the permascowl he was famous for as a player that marks this film out.

A role reversal so outrageous it could only be a work of nonfiction, the story of Csanad Szegedi, an infamous member of Hungary’s conservative Jobbik party, is as preposterously true as they come. A former Holocaust denier and anti-Semite, Szegedi now lives as a practicing Orthodox Jew determined to honor his familial past (his grandparents were Jewish). Fascinated by this turnaround, filmmakers Joseph Martin and Sam Blair created Keep Quiet, an in-depth study of the new life of Szegedi and co-lead Rabbi Boruch Oberlande, as a portrait of internal religious tension and the endless trying struggle to right one’s wrongs. Keep Quiet is a chilling and comprehensive documentary following the path to redemption – or a calculated political act – for Csanad Szegedi, a right-wing anti-Semite who rose to become the vice president of Hungary’s Jobbik party. The Jobbik are a conservative radical nationalist group that fashioned itself after the Nazi while calling for self-deportation, global isolationism, and an enhanced police state. Embroiled in a scandal when it’s revealed Szegedi is actually Jewish with a grandmother who survived Auschwitz, questions about his upbringing are at the forefront for much of the film’s first act. Did Szegedi sell out his own family history, including his grandmother, for populist appeal or did he really not know he was playing with fire?
Presenting the early part of his career in archival materials, including appearances, rallies and candid talking head interviews, Keep Quiet quietly builds an ambiguous character study that’s as calculated as the man.

The New York Knicks are one of basketball’s most storied franchises but they haven’t won an NBA title since 1973. Celebrity fans like Spike Lee, Woody Allen, and screenwriter William Goldman worshipped the star-studded — but team-first — Knicks teams of that championship era, and a generation of aging sportswriters refuse to let those hardwood legends die. Actor Michael Rapaport was only three years old when the Knicks won their last title, but he’s turned his yearning for those glory years into a documentary, When the Garden was Eden.

Moonrise Kingdom (12A)
(Wes Anderson, 2012, Us) Jared Gilman, Kara Hayward, Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Frances McDormand, Bill Murray. 94 mins
Anderson's signature meticulous, deadpan retro-chic works best when it's tethered to something tangibly real, as this is, historically and emotionally. Set on an island microcosm of 1965 America, it details the touching elopement of two precocious but naive pre-teens, and the grown-up chaos and crises their clandestine outdoors adventure provokes. It's a stylised storm in a teacup, packed with visual flourishes, cultural footnotes and the usual dry comedy. But beneath the playfulness are some deceptively mature observations on the pain that comes with both childhood and adulthood.
Men In Black 3 (PG)
(Barry Sonnenfeld, 2012, Us) Will Smith, Josh Brolin, Alice Eve. 106 mins
A time-travel twist facilitates a return to the 1960s and the golden age of conspiracy theories, which goes a long way to justifying a sequel no one was particularly screaming out for.

★★★☆☆ Not to be confused with the 1982 romantic drama, Sam Blair's Personal Best (2012) is a BFI-supported documentary sharing the stories of three professional runners aiming towards competing in the 2012 London Olympics. What Personal Best lacks in fictional tales of love and friendship, it makes up for in real-life, gripping drama as the three hard players fight opposing factors to achieve their sporting dreams.
