Yesterday, news broke that Damon Lindelof, co-creator of hit shows like “Lost” and “The Leftovers,” was working on a new “Star Wars” feature film, to be directed by Oscar-winning documentarian and “Ms. Marvel” director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
Now TheWrap has confirmed that Justin Britt-Gibson will co-write the screenplay alongside Lindelof. In addition, other new details have emerged about what the project is and how Lindelof is developing the story.
According to a report in THR, a writers’ room was convened shortly after Star Wars Celebration, the all-“Star Wars” convention that was held in Anaheim, California, across the street from Disneyland earlier this year. The writer’s room was held for two weeks in July and included participation from Lindelof’s “Leftovers” collaborator (and “Station Eleven” creator) Patrick Somerville; “Obi-Wan Kenobi” consulting producer Rayna McClendon and Andy Greenwald, creator of the short-lived but deeply brilliant USA series “Briarpatch,” which had the...

It was reported over the weekend that Damon Lindelof was writing a new Star Wars movie which will be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), and now THR has a few more details to share.
Sources told THR that the new Star Wars movie would take place after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. They add that although it won’t be a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, it could feature some of the characters who appeared in The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. There are plenty of characters who were underused in the Sequel Trilogy, even some of the main ones, so this could prove a great opportunity to revisit them.

The secret Star Wars movie project that is being led creatively by Damon Lindelof was thrust into the open Sunday night when it was revealed that Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who directed two episodes of Ms. Marvel, was on board as helmer.
The project has been in the works for months, and while Lindelof is getting the Wookiee-sized share of attention, thanks in no small part to a pedigree that includes co-creating TV sensation Lost and shepherding the acclaimed HBO series Watchmen, he is by no means the only person involved in the project.
In fact, if Lost and Watchmen, as well as The Leftovers, another beloved series Lindelof created, have shown anything, it’s that one of the writer’s chief talents is picking gifted collaborators.

It's the end of the line for another USA Network series.
Briarpatch has been canceled after one season.
Series creator Andy Greenwald announced the “disappointing” on Twitter, adding, “Though I’ve known for months, it’s still a bummer.
“We had an amazing story planned for [Season 2],” he added, “and I was lucky enough to work with the most amazing writers and crew, all of whom were itching to get back to work."
"I think we were going to do something special. And, hey, maybe we still will. If enough people keep checking the show out on demand, anything’s possible — especially for an anthology series as weird as this one. Nothing’s over until it’s over. But if it’s over? What a way to go.”
The good news for fans is that Season 2 would have featured a different story, with the series taking an anthology approach.

“Briarpatch,” the Rosario Dawson-led anthology series, has been canceled after only one season at USA Network.
The cancelation was confirmed by showrunner Andy Greenwald, who posted the news on Twitter. “Briarpatch” finished its brief 10-episode run back in April.

Rosario Dawson-fronted drama Briarpatch is not returning for a second season.
The freshman drama series has been canceled at USA Network after one season, a move which showrunner Andy Greenwald called a “bummer”.
The show, which is based on the Ross Thomas novel, premiered in February. It started in a 10pm slot on Thursdays but was moved to Mondays at 11pm two weeks after its premiere.
Briarpatch follows Allegra Dill (Dawson), a dogged investigator returning to her border-town Texas home after her sister is murdered. What begins as a search for a killer turns into an all-consuming fight to bring her corrupt hometown to its knees.
It also starred Jay R. Ferguson, Brian Geraghty, Edi Gathegi, Kim Dickens, Alan Cumming, and Ed Asner. Written for television by Greenwald, who executive produced alongside Mr. Robot and Homecoming‘s Esmail through his production company Esmail Corp and Anonymous Content’s Chad Hamilton.

Briarpatch will not return to USA Network.
The drama starring Rosario Dawson and from exec producers Andy Greenwald and Sam Esmail (Mr. Robot) completed its 10-episode first season in April. The series, based on the Ross Thomas novel of the same name, told a complete story in its first season and was billed as anthology.
Sources tell THR that in success, Briarpatch would have gone on to score a second season. The Chris McCumber-led basic cable network, however, did not ask to hear a pitch for a possible second offering of the series.

I’ve said it before, but it’s really wonderful that Briarpatch creator and showrunner Andy Greenwald decided to gender-swap the lead from Ross Thomas’ novel. Not only did it give Rosario Dawson a chance to headline a series, but it provided her an opportunity to play a character-type that she’s so strongly suited for. I imagine when casting a noir, Dawson would strike some as being perfect for the femme fatale, but Briarpatch proves she makes a better Bogart than a Mary Astor.
“Breadknife Weather” is an incredible showcase for Dawson. Finally being forced to emotionally confront the death of her sister, Dawson careens from anger, gallows laughter, quite reflection, disgust, and good old fashioned grief. We finally get the details about Allegra’s past in San Bonifacio, her parents’ tragic death, and her past relationship with her sister, including the last time that she saw Felicity alive.

Briarpatch Episode 3
While doing press for Briarpatch, which has been pushed to the unfortunate hour of 11 p.m. on Monday nights (let’s hope those streaming numbers stay steady), creator Andy Greenwald has joked that the show should be subtitled “Rosario Dawson Talks to Weirdos.” He’s certainly not wrong; “Terrible, Shocking Things” mostly coasts on that exact premise. While Allegra and Singe are hunting for Felicity’s missing burner phone, the pair find themselves wading their way through Jake Spivey’s extravagant benefit party for the San Bonifacio mayor, rubbing shoulders with some of the town’s most important, and likely most corrupt, figures.
More so than any episode that’s come before, Dawson exudes Big Gumshoe Energy. She perfectly slips into the Humphrey Bogart role,...

Maybe it’s watching the characters of Briarpatch interact in the searing temperatures of San Bonafacio, but I’ve already warmed to USA Network’s new neo noir quite a bit. However, after two episodes, a clear problem looks to be arising for the show; there are two seemingly competing storylines, and one is more interesting. At the moment, it isn’t an issue because the hunt for Felicity’s killer is bringing Allegra into contact with all sorts of quirky characters with shady motivations. But as more time is spent on Allegra’s day job, the one bringing her back in touch with old flame Jake Spivey, I’m already finding myself wondering when we will get back to the Spivey,...

Former TV critic Andy Greenwald had seen the demands of being a showrunner firsthand. When he finally got the chance to call the shots on the USA Network series “Briarpatch,” that opportunity brought everything that comes with overseeing the production of 10 hourlong episodes of TV.

After screening for critics and audiences at the Toronto Film Festival back in September, USA’s Briarpatch is finally here. The series, created by writer and pop culture commentator Andy Greenwald and executive produced by Mr. Robot’s Sam Esmail, is the NBCUniversal sister network’s latest prestige play, and most promising new series since Esmail’s recently concluded thriller.
Adapted from Ross Thomas’ crime/mystery novel of the same name, Briarpatch centers on Allegra Dill, played by Rosario Dawson (wisely gender-swapped from the novel), a steely political fixer brought back to her small, corrupt hometown after the death of her sister Felicity, a policewoman. Briarpatch is a murder mystery by genre, but it won't play by the rules. "It really has a wild aspect that's very unpredictable and unusual," series producer and star Rosario Dawson tells E! exclusively. "And I think we're starved for that kind of content." Based on Rob Thomas' 1984 novel of the same name, Dawson says Briarpatch's small-screen adaptation aimed to "modernize" its original narrative for 21st century. The book's lead character, investigator Benjamin Dill, becomes Dawson's Allegra in Andy Greenwald's culturally-relevant take on an eerie Texas homicide case and a neighborhood ripe with...

The fact that USA Network’s new murder-mystery Briarpatch is set in a steamy Texas border town known as Saint Disgrace is a big clue about what’s to follow. It’s a conspicuously quirky setting for a conspicuously quirky show: a funky neo-noir full of eccentric characters that has atmosphere to burn. There’s plenty to like about the style of Briarpatch — premiering Thursday, Feb. 6 at 10/9c; I’ve seen the first three episodes — but I’m not sure there’s enough substance to go with it. It is undeniably clever… but it might be too clever for its own good.

In the book, the lead character is a man, and while recasting Dill as a woman breaks stereotypes, the panel was...

“Briarpatch” follows Allegra Drill (Rosario Dawson), who works to uncover her assassinated sister’s murderers. It’s a murder mystery — simple enough — but it’s also a show where giraffes, kangaroos, and other zoo animals roam the streets while an increasingly eccentric cadre of characters butt heads with the no-nonsense heroine. It’s pretty strange, and the “Briarpatch” cast is keenly aware of that.
Dawson joined “Briarpatch” showrunner Andy Greenwald and series costars Kim Dickens and Jay R. Ferguson to discuss the upcoming USA Network 10-episode anthology series during NBC’s final panel at the Television Critics Association 2020 Winter Press Tour in Pasadena Saturday evening.
“This is the town that will respond to something inexplicable and wild and maybe beautiful with brutality,” Greenwald said during the “Briarpatch” TCA panel.

This year, USA will air the final season of “Mr. Robot,” the show that launched creator Sam Esmail and that seemed, for a moment, to foretell a very different future for a network that had for years prior been best-known for its sunny, light dramas set in unconventional workplaces. Little in the show’s wake, though, has looked like it, at least on USA; its mélange of references, self-consciously brooding tone, and elaborate directorial choices shared more with fare on FX (“Fargo”) or HBO (“The Leftovers”) than, really, any of USA’s stable.
That changes with “Briarpatch,” a new drama debuting early next year after premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival Sept. 7. The drama, a noirish literary adaptation executive produced by Esmail and former TV critic Andy Greenwald, seems like a middle way for USA, combining some of the visual and narrative excess of “Mr. Robot” with the clean...

USA Network was never known for having the sort of prestige dramas that cable networks like FX and AMC have routinely produced, but after the success of idiosyncratic psychological thriller Mr. Robot and anthology mystery series The Sinner, that perception is starting to change. Briarpatch, the new drama series adapted from Ross Thomas’ crime/mystery novel of the same name and executive produced by Robot’s Sam Esmail, could be the new breakout hit that cements the NBCUniversal sister network as serious players in the ever-expanding TV content wars.
Created by writer and pop culture commentator Andy Greenwald, Briarpatch feels like a TV obsessive’s Platonic ideal of a Peak TV drama, and that’s probably because it is. Reviewing TV for sites like Grantland, Greenwald routinely took a magnifying...

Giraffes and tigers and car bombs — oh my! “Briarpatch” sure does offer an unusual combination of TV rarities in its first hour, and barely slows down in the second. Adapted from Ross Thomas’ 1984 Edgar Award-winning novel of the same name, Andy Greenwald’s adaptation is actual a pretty cool combination of genres — like a neo-noir western with more Martin McDonagh than Nic Refn. Each element plays well off each other in what’s otherwise a sleepy small town murder-mystery, and the resulting oddities — like a zoo-full of animals unleashed across Texas, or Jay R. Ferguson sporting a good ol’ boy drawl — feel like marvelous side effects of such a fervent blending of styles.

USA Network has given a straight-to-series order to Brave New World, based on the Aldous Huxley novel, from Universal Content Productions and Amblin Television. The series adaptation was written by David Wiener (Homecoming), with Grant Morrison (Happy!) and Brian Taylor.

Dawson plays Allegra Dill, a dogged investigator returning to her border-town Texas home after her sister is murdered. What begins as a search for a killer turns into an all-consuming fight to bring her corrupt hometown to its knees. The season celebrates the beloved genres represented by Thomas’ book — a stylish blend of crime and pulp fiction — while updating his sense of fun, danger and place for a new generation.
