Nominations for the 39th Annual Lucille Lortel Awards were announced today by Amber Iman and George Abud, two stars of Broadway’s “Lempicka.” The Lortels honor outstanding achievement in Off-Broadway theater. The 2024 ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 5 at NYU Skirball Center. The Lucille Lortel Awards are produced by the Off-Broadway League and Lucille Lortel Theatre, with additional support provided by Tdf.
It’s common for productions to begin their life Off-Broadway before transferring to the Main Stem, so many of this year’s Tony Awards hopefuls are among the list of Lortel nominations. Chief among these contenders is “Hell’s Kitchen,” the semi-autobiographical musical from Alicia Keys. That tuner garnered five Lortel nominations. These include Best Musical, Best Choreography for Camille A. Brown, a Lead Performer bid for Maleah Joi Moon, and Featured Performer bids for Shoshana Bean and Kecia Lewis. All performance categories at the Lortel Awards are gender neutral.

Steppenwolf’s Broadway production of Tracy Letts’ The Minutes is exiting the Cort Theatre, its pre-covid home, with plans to re-open in 2022 at another Broadway venue.

These boots were made for Broadway, and that’s just where they’ll be — until the spring. Producers Daryl Roth and Hal Luftig said today that Kinky Boots, which won six Tony Awards including Best Musical in 2013, will close on April 7.
When the final curtain falls, it will have played 2,507 regular performances and 34 previews — good for the 25th-longest-running show in Main Stem history.
“When we first set out to make this show, we never could have imagined the success it would have here on Broadway and around the world,” said co-creators Harvey Fierstein and Cyndi Lauper, who became the first woman to win the Tony for Best Score. “We speak on behalf of the entire company when we say how grateful we are to the fans who have embraced our work across four continents, and counting.”

As for this year's cream of the crop, Michael Keaton (Birdman), Julianne Moore (Still Alice), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) took home top honors in the lead and supporting acting categories.
Meanwhile, in what very well may be an indicator for what's to come tomorrow at the Academy Awards, "Birdman" was recognized as Best Feature while Richard Linklater nabbed Best Director accolades for "Boyhood".

As we head into December, awards season is well under way, and though we’ll have to wait until the spring for really big fish like the Oscars and the Golden Globes, this month has a respectable number of ceremonies of its own. Last night, celebrities gathered at Cipriani Wall Street in New York for the 2014 Gotham Independent Film Awards.
It was a long, casual ceremony for those in attendance, but when the night finally wrapped up, few could argue with the results. Birdman spread its wings and took home Best Feature, while Michael Keaton nabbed Best Actor for his revelatory role in the Alejandro G. Iñárritu-directed film. Meanwhile, Julianne Moore continued her unstoppable march to the Oscars, receiving Best Actress for her devastating work as an Alzheimer’s-afflicted linguistics professor in Still Alice. And Laura Poitras was awarded Best Documentary Feature for her eye-opening Edward Snowden doc Citizenfour.

Just a few moments ago, the 2015 Independent Spirit Awards announced their nominations for their 30th annual ceremony, once again providing a mix of future Academy Award nominees and smaller contenders getting their moment in the sun. In terms of the former, Birdman (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) lead the nominations with a half dozen citations, followed by Boyhood and Selma with five each. Nightcrawler also scored a total of five, with Whiplash not far behind at four. They mixed with more fringe contenders like Love is Strange (also at four) and the aforementioned smaller players that won’t even sniff Oscar love, such as A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (three nominations). Overall, it was an eclectic mix, to say the least. I won’t speculate about potential winners just yet, but I will do a quick bit of analysis. Obviously, Birdman, Boyhood, and Selma solidified their causes as top tier Academy Award players,...

The 2014 fall awards season is off to a strong start with the unveiling of the nominees for this year’s Gotham Independent Film Awards. Though not as recognizable as the Oscars or Golden Globes, the Gotham Awards typically mark the start of awards season, honoring the best and brightest in independent cinema. Additionally, many of the films highlighted by the Gotham Awards go on to become Oscar frontrunners – last year’s most nominated film was eventual Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave, and past winners have included Inside Llewyn Davis, Beasts of the Southern Wild and The Hurt Locker.
This year looks to be no different, with assumed Oscar contenders like Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s technically dazzling Birdman and Richard Linklater’s ambitious 12-year project Boyhood in the mix. Excitingly, Wes Anderson’s brilliant The Grand Budapest Hotel, released way back in March, also made the cut, meaning that its...

Ira Sachs’ second in a trilogy of NYC-set films took Sundance by storm playing like gangbusters and not surprisingly, much in line with the acting weight found in Forty Shades of Blue and Keep the Lights On, it appears that the pair of John Lithgow and Alfred Molina might be en route to some award nom recognition.

A destination lieu for Ira Sachs dating back to 1994 when he showed his experimental short Lady, I’d be baffled if Love is Strange premieres elsewhere than Park City – the birthplace for his critically acclaimed The Delta (’97), Forty Shades of Blue (’05) and Keep the Lights On (’12). We have a trio of actors in Marisa Tomei, John Lithgow and Alfred Molina who are probably starved for such roles and I have no doubt will hit this out of the Eccles park. Shooting took place in NYC this past summer (here’s the production blog) on the contempo storyline.

Ira Sachs has found the third piece in his acting puzzle in the rarely used, under-appreciated actress who since Bent Hamer’s Factotum has become a fixture of sorts for supporting roles in quality indie fare items (we loved her take in Cyrus as well). Marisa Tomei (replaces a once attached Kelly Reilly) in Love is Strange, landing the role of Kate, a novelist who is married to Ben’s (John Lithgow) nephew. The couple agrees to let Ben move in after he’s forced to sell his apartment. Production is set for the end of the month and will be produced by Parts & Labor’s Lars Knudsen and Jay Van Hoy, Lucas Joaquin (producer on Sach’s brilliant Keep the Lights On – read our 4-star review) and Jayne Baron Sherman.
