The last cork has been popped and the final flute of Kirkland Signatures sparkling wine drained down to the last drop. Old Man 2023 has gathered his sash about his withered frame and slunk into the night, clearing the way for cherubic New Year 2024–giggly, chubby and brimming with promise.
Or something. In reality, years don’t flip on and off like a light switch. They smear into each other like paint, until everything is the same weird shade of brownish-purple. But still: we all strive to make each new chapter in the Gregorian filing system a fresh start–a chance to break bad habits and begin good ones.
The traditional way of kickstarting these self-improvement reboots is through the maddeningly self-deceptive ritual of setting New Year’s Resolutions–80% of which are inevitably abandoned by February 1, according to most studies. At Variety’s 10 Producers to Watch panel, held March 31 at the Sun Valley Film Festival, the first order of business was defining what it means to be a producer, a title — and a role — that encapsulates a number of responsibilities on a film.
“The way that I describe it is you’ve got to know a little bit about a lot of things in filmmaking,” said Rachael Fung, whose film “Fremont” later won best narrative film in the festival’s One in a Million category, recognizing features made for less than $1 million. “You’ve got to be able to understand and talk to every single person that touches the film at every single stage. And also it’s about finding those directors and filmmakers and understanding their vision and figuring out the best way to get that to screen.”

"True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto will make his feature film directorial debut with the drama "Easy's Waltz." Deadline confirmed the news, revealing the project will star Vince Vaughn alongside Michelle Monaghan, Simon Rex, and Al Pacino. Unsurprisingly, given his history of penning entire seasons of his crime drama anthology solo, Pizzolatto will also be on screenwriting duty for the film, which is described as a mix of "Swingers" and "A Star Is Born."
"Easy's Waltz" will reportedly focus on a "down-on-his-luck comedian-crooner" in modern-day Las Vegas, who navigates the city alongside "old-school Vegas personalities." Not much else is known about the project, which is being produced by Margot Hand, who also lent her producing talents to 2021's "Passing."
No release has been announced, and further details are yet to be revealed, but this will be the second time Pizzolatto and Vaughn have teamed up, following the latter's starring role in season 2 of "True Detective.

‘The People We Hate at the Wedding’ Trailer: Kristen Bell, Ben Platt, and Allison Janney Cause Chaos
Who else wants to say “I do” to some dysfunctional family hilarity?
In Prime Video’s “The People We Hate at the Wedding,” Ben Platt and Kristen Bell star as outrageous siblings who travel with their optimistic mother (Allison Janney) to the British wedding of their estranged half-sister (Cynthia Addai-Robinson). “Eloise is our half-sister, which means that we can half-ass the relationship,” Platt says in the trailer, referencing the bride-to-be.
Written by “Bob’s Burgers” sibling scribes Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin (“The Great North”) and Wendy Molyneux (“Deadpool 3”), “The People We Hate at the Wedding” is directed by Claire Scanlon, who previously helmed episodes of “The Office” and Netflix rom-com “Set It Up.”

In total, 48 feature films are up for prizes this year.
Diversity remains in the spotlight for the Brit Awards org. For the third consecutive year, Women In Film has released its awards-season ballot, recognizing all the women whose work behind the camera made this year’s biggest films possible.
As critics and guilds start voting and handing out awards, the Wif #VoteForWomen ballot seeks to shine a light on the women and nonbinary film professionals for consideration.
In a statement, Women In Film said, “Every year we see hundreds of women excelling at their roles as creative and craft leads on the set of films big and small, and we are too often dismayed by how few of them make it into the predominant discussions of who gets celebrated with nominations and awards — recognition which can lead to continued work and compensation.”
Notably, there are 27 women in the directing category, including last year’s best director winner Chloe Zhao, who helmed “Eternals.” Despite this number, Jane Campion is currently leading pundit polls,...

The Gotham Awards will be the first awards body on the independent circuit to choose its winners for the year on Monday.
On the film side, two Netflix features lead the tally, both from debut women filmmakers — Rebecca Hall’s “Passing” and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter.” There isn’t always an obvious blueprint to predicting this group. As we saw with last year’s two tied categories, things could get interesting at Cipriani Wall Street. The Gotham are just the start of a busy week that has a great influence on the Oscar race. After Monday’s first critics and guild screening of Steven Spielberg’s “West Side Story” and Wednesday’s unveiling of Guillermo del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley,” Thursday brings us the National Board of Review selections before the New York Film Critics Circle weighs in on Friday.

At a packed New York Film Festival screening, Rebecca Hall said it wasn’t easy getting her directorial debut, “Passing,” brought to screen, but her producers stuck by her throughout the long process.
“My producers stood by me, even though I was a first-time filmmaker asking to make a movie in black-and-white, in 4:3 aspect ratio about controversial subject matter and a period film. They kept saying yes,” she said of producers Forest Whitaker, Nina Yang Bongiovi and Margot Hand at the Sunday night screening.
Hall had a surprising family connection to the film, based on Nella Larsen’s 1929 book of the same name. “Passing” takes place in the 1920s and follows the lives of two Black women, one of whom passes as a white woman, due to her light skin tone, and marries a white husband who is clueless about her race. Rebecca Hall’s directorial debut already made a big splash with its Sundance Film Festival premiere — and the film is set to make even bigger noise, as Netflix is nearing a $16 million deal for worldwide distribution rights on the film, an individual with knowledge of the deal tells Variety.
Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga star in the project, based on the 1929 novella by Nella Larsen and adapted by Hall, about racial passing in 1920s New York.
“Passing” was one of the buzziest titles heading into the festival, with Endeavor Content handling sales for the picture. The film boasts a starry cast and, after its well-reviewed premiere, a sizable acquisition deal was to be expected.

Netflix is nearing a $16 million deal to acquire the rights to “Passing,” Rebecca Hall’s period racial drama starring Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga that premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition, according to two insiders with knowledge of the deal.
Hall made her directorial debut on the film that is set in 1920s New York and stars Thompson and Negga as two Black women who have been able to “pass” as white due to their lighter-colored skin.
Hall also wrote the screenplay based on a 1929 novel by Nella Larsen, and the film is shot in a silky black and white. Bill Camp, Alexander Skarsgard and Andre Holland co-star.
TheWrap’s Carlos Aguilar called the film in his review “impressively refined and superbly acted” and compared Hall to another actor turned director, Regina King, writing that “Hall arrives behind the camera fully formed as a storyteller handling thought-provoking subject matter with formidable aesthetic sensibilities.

“Bridesmaids” stars and writers Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo have reunited for a new comedy called “Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar,” and their big ’80s haircuts and shrill Midwestern accents that sound like something out of “Fargo” seems like a character that Wiig has been waiting to dust off since her “SNL” days.
“Barb & Star” will skip theaters to debut as a premium video on demand rental on February 14. The new trailer doesn’t exactly give a hint at the story — in fact we never even get to see Barb and Star’s faces, but it’s about two best friends who leave their small Midwest town for the very first time for a tropical vacation. Along the way their friendship will deepen and they’ll even try and overcome a villainous plot.
Suffice it to say, Barb and Star are very excited about appearing in their own movie trailer.
