Prom is a pivotal moment in every high schooler’s life. For Ruby Gillman (voiced by To All the Boys’ Lana Condor) and her friends, the plan was to pivot away from prom night entirely and enjoy a group hang instead. Shunning the formalwear rite of passage also meant Ruby could obey her mum’s rule of staying away from the ocean. A school dance on a boat would mean sailing dangerously close to the line she must never cross and Ruby determines to stay on dry land.
But teens are contrary creatures and as Ruby’s friends pair off it becomes increasingly obvious that the lure of prom is too strong to resist. And Ruby’s crush on fellow mathlete and effortlessly cool skateboarder Connor (Jaboukie Young-White) is compelling her to don a cute gown and follow the crowd…
Ruby’s parents are divided on how much freedom to give their girl.

You’ve encountered Ruby Gillman, the protagonist of DreamWorks’ latest venture, Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, before: She’s a nerdy teen (math is her favorite subject), who survives the cliquishness of high school with her close friends (they call themselves “the squad”). She frets about the usual affairs of adolescence, like asking her crush to prom and evading her mother’s watchful gaze. Her parents love her, but could stand to dial back their overprotective instincts. And, oh, Ruby has a big secret: She’s a kraken.
Like a host of supernatural creatures and people before her (Miles Morales of Spider-Man, which would make a pleasant double bill with this film; Darby of Darby and the Dead; and Wei-Chen in American Born Chinese), Ruby lives a double life. She can’t tell her friends that she’s a squid-like creature who, legends say, destroys ships and their sailors. Her parents moved to Oceanside,...

Audiences might bemoan the lack of original thinking at the movies these days — all those sequels, remakes, and reboots! — but even new ideas can feel suddenly played out when faced with the horrifying specter of parallel thinking. Consider everything from “Deep Impact” and “Armageddon” to “Dante’s Peak” and “Volcano,” “Capote” and “Infamous” to “No Strings Attached” and “Friends with Benefits,” and those are just contemporary examples of the phenomenon. If you’ve got an idea for a movie — hopefully, a good one to boot — chances are, someone else has it, too. And they may even have it at the exact same time.
Such is the case with Kirk DeMicco and Faryn Pearl’s “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken,” which arrives on the heels (fins? paws?) of some very similar other animated adventures, like Pixar’s superior “Turning Red” and the studio’s less thrilling entry “Luca,” both of which use monstrous...

Kirk DeMicco’s Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken feels torn between being a story of racial difference and offering a compelling vision of teenage growing pains. Sweet but narratively thin and didactic, the latest from DreamWorks Animation always seems as if it’s trying to find its footing, which is apt insofar as its main character, a 15-year-old champion mathlete named Ruby (Lana Condor), is trying to understand her place in the world.
Ruby goes through high school wondering why her parents, Agatha (Toni Collette) and Arthur (Colman Domingo), are so strict about keeping her away from sea water. And, unfortunately for Ruby, that includes not being able to attend her high school prom, as it’s set to take place on a massive cruise ship in the ocean. One day, while flirting with Connor (Jaboukie Young-White), Ruby accidentally pushes her would-be paramour into the ocean, and upon diving in after...

This summer, DreamWorks Animation dives into the turbulent waters of high school with a hilarious, heartfelt action comedy about a shy teenager who discovers that she’s part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens and that her destiny, in the depths of the oceans, is bigger than she ever dreamed.
Sweet, awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor) is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but she mostly just feels invisible. She’s math-tutoring her skater-boy crush (Jaboukie Young-White), who only seems to admire her for her fractals, and she’s prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach because her over-protective supermom (Toni Collette), has forbade...

If you’re going to make a movie about a kraken — those giant multi-tentacled sea monsters believed to wrestle ships from below — then computer animation is hands down the way to go. The trouble with doing so at a major American studio is that it comes with the imperative to turn these fantastical creatures into cutesy-wootsy kid-movie fodder, which is precisely what DreamWorks Animation does with the reasonably clever myth-twisting toon “Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken.” The creative team’s high-concept take suggests “Twilight” as a (literal) fish-out-of-water comedy, wherein a family of blue-skinned squid-things attempt to pass as human.
Fifteen years ago, Agatha (voiced by Toni Collette) and Peter (Colman Domingo) abandoned the ocean to raise their kids on land. Despite the obvious hurdles — their conspicuous cerulean tint, floppy limbs and invertebrate status — they’ve been reasonably successful at blending in. Anytime someone looks suspicious, Ruby (Lana Condor) just says she’s from Canada,...

In the animated fantasy Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken it’s the mermaids that are the big baddies while the krakens are the protectors of the ocean’s creatures. Who knew mermaids are evil? Also, does this trailer give anyone else Turning Red vibes?

It has been an exceptionally disappointing year for smart, serious science fiction on the screen. In a short period, we had the crash and burn of Ad Astra and Lucy in the Sky, the latter of which has been made available for streaming by Fox Home Entertainment ahead of its inevitable release on disc.
Where Noah Hawley’s Legion was a surreal character study that got you involved with the characters, this film, co-written with Brian C Brown and Elliott Diguiseppi, keeps every character at arm’s length. We open with mission specialist Lucy Cola in space and follow her re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere.
Clearly, like so many real-world astronauts, the experience was deeply affecting, but unlike the others, she is now forever altered and no one notices. Those closest to her, such as her husband Drew (Dan Stevens) and grandmother Nana Holbrook (Ellen Burstyn), seem oblivious.

After Judy opened to nearly $3 million last weekend, the specialty box office has a hard act to follow this frame. But there are a couple of films that could possibly match Roadside Attractions and Ld Entertainment’s biopic about musical legend Judy Garland.
Fox Searchlight is releasing Lucy in the Sky today. The space drama stars Natalie Portman, who’s always a box office draw, and the pic marks the first theatrical release for Noah Hawley — we’ll see if the collaboration can strike gold at the box office. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures Classics is riding a wave of confidence, kicking down the door with Pedro Almodovar’s Pain and Glory starring Antonio Banderas. Cinephiles are expected to flock to the Spanish auteur’s latest, which marks the eighth cinematic collaboration between the director and star.
Also opening this weekend is Michael Beach Nichols’ too-creepy-to-be-true documentary Wrinkles the Clown, which can...

It’s always a downer when talented artists pour everything they’ve got into a film that stubbornly refuses to come to life. That’s the case with Lucy in the Sky, an astronaut drama from a female perspective that argues space travel can seriously screw with your perceptions of life on earth. Take Lucy Cola, for example: She’s an astronaut with a Texas drawl and a can-do attitude that makes her a formidable competitor for the alpha males at Nasa. As played by an ardent, adventurous Natalie Portman,...

After “Ad Astra” and now “Lucy in the Sky,” there should probably be some kind of psychological study done on astronauts who trek to outer space only to find they can no longer function among other human beings when they return to Earth.
While the former film strives to understand its protagonist, the latter, the latest from director Noah Hawley (creator of TV’s “Fargo” and “Legion”), portrays its lead character as an “erratic,” “spiraling” woman whose rapid descent into madness is somehow connected with her deep-rooted feminism. The results are, as you might expect, negative.
Astronaut Lucy Cola (Natalie Portman) has just returned home after a particularly remarkable trip to space where she, as she puts it, was even able to spot her own house. To the credit of cinematographer Polly Morgan (“The Intervention”) and sound mixer Jaya Jayaraja, outer space looks and sounds both spectacular and disturbingly serene...

I’m not going to mince words here: Lucy in the Sky is a terrible film. It’s a disaster, a fiasco, a complete tragedy. It’s the kind of film that will have people clamoring for the thesaurus because one word cannot summarize just how bad it is. This is the first film by Noah Hawley, the man responsible for the TV series Fargo and Legion, and his jump from TV to the big screen feels like he’s leaping into an industrial shredder. This film is so bad it made me wish director jail was a real place, where Hawley could be locked inside, and the key flown thousands of miles away so it could be cast into an ocean on the other side of the world. The fact that someone like Hawley has been able to attain this much power, money, and artistic freedom to make something...

The term “space case” may as well have been invented for Lucy Cola, a fictional astronaut loosely inspired by Lisa Nowak, who famously (if not entirely factually) donned adult diapers and powered her way cross-country to confront a romantic rival at the Orlando airport, where she was arrested for what amounted to attempted kidnapping and battery. When the story broke — this was a dozen years back, in 2007 — news outlets and tabloids alike treated it as a kind of pathetic “Fatal Attraction” scenario, in which a jealous Nasa engineer couldn’t handle being dumped by one of her colleagues and went berserk.
Now, Natalie Portman offers an alternate interpretation. In its oddly understanding and stylistically ambitious way, “Lucy in the Sky” suggests that maybe outer space was to blame for Nowak’s actions. You see, as an astronaut, Nowak belonged to a very small club of super-achievers who have actually touched the heavens,...

Natalie Portman’s “Lucy in the Sky” will be released, in limited theaters, on Oct. 4, 2019, giving it an awards-bait slot in the calendar.
In “Lucy in the Sky,” Portman plays astronaut Lucy Cola who returns to Earth after a mission to space, but she starts to lose touch with the reality she knew before.
The other movies opening that day are Joaquin Phoenix’s “Joker,” Benedict Cumberbatch’s “The Current War” and Pedro Almodovar’s Cannes Competition selection “Pain and Glory.”
“Lucy in the Sky” reunites Dan Stevens with “Legion” creator Noah Hawley, who is directing, and also stars Zazie Beetz, Jon Hamm and Ellen Burstyn.

Fox Searchlight has set October 4 for the limited release of Noah Hawley’s Lucy in the Sky, which stars Natalie Portman as an astronaut who returns from space.
With Lucy‘s new date, Disney officially is still keeping the wide release for Fox’s Joe Wright-directed Amy Adams feature The Woman in the Window on the same date. That pic is going back for reshoots, with the studio to assess whether it gets moved or not.
In Lucy in the Sky, Portman’s astronaut returns to Earth to learn that her boyfriend (Jon Hamm) is having an affair with an astronaut trainee. She bottoms out and desperately tries to correct all that is wrong. Also starring are Dan Stevens, Ellen Burstyn and Zazie Beetz. No word yet if Lucy will hit Telluride or Tiff.
Hawley, Brian C. Brown and Elliott Diguiseppi wrote the script, which is inspired by real-life Nasa Captain Lisa Nowak.

Fox Searchlight has released the first trailer for Lucy in the Sky, starring Natalie Portman as astronaut Lucy Cola. In the film, Portman plays an astronaut who returns to Earth after a transcendent experience during a recent mission and begins to lose touch with reality in a world that now seems far too small to contain her after suffering a breakdown of sorts.
The film is directed by Noah Hawley (the creator of “Fargo” and “Legion”) in his feature debut. One of the titles that I’ve been predicting for probably more Academy Award love than most is the film Lucy in the Sky. Part of it is just a hunch on my part, though a lot of it has to do with the story and the talent involved here. This has a chance to be an under the radar gem. Earlier today, a Trailer was released for Lucy in the Sky, and it doesn’t do anything to make me feel any less confident about its potential. It looks great. We’ll have the Trailer for you at the tail end of this post of course, but before that, I want to talk about what it is and why I think it could be a player. The movie is a character study, mixing a bit of comedy, drama, and even science fiction. Previously known as Pale Blue Dot, this...

No one plays unhinged quite like Natalie Portman, and she’s got another doozy on tap, judging by the first trailer for “Lucy in the Sky” (watch above).
The Oscar winner plays Lucy Cola, an astronaut who loses grip with reality upon her return to Earth and soon starts an affair with another astronaut, Mark (Jon Hamm). “I go up there and see the whole universe and everything here looks so small,” Lucy says in the clip over a shot of her and Mark bowling with a ball painted like Earth. Subtle, guys.
Portman adopts a Southern accent and dons a short wig that looks like the follicular love child of her ‘do in “The Professional” (1994) and Claire Foy‘s bob in “First Man.” As Lucy further unravels, the teaser ends with Lucy running from police and a shot of her in a room (therapy session?) in which she tells...

Natalie Portman has nailed the art of unraveling in films such as “Vox Lux” and “Black Swan,” the latter of which won her the Oscar for Best Actress, and she’s back at it again with her latest release, “Lucy in the Sky.” Formerly titled “Pale Blue Dot,” the movie marks the directorial debut of television favorite Noah Hawley, who serves as showrunner on FX’s “Legion” and “Fargo.”
Loosely based on a true story, “Lucy in the Sky” stars Portman as an astronaut who returns home from a long mission and finds herself losing her connection to her family. When her boyfriend begins having an affair with an astronaut trainee, Portman’s character bottoms out and takes drastic measures to right the wrong. Exclusive: Colman Domingo, whose character is one of the few surviving originals on AMC’s Fear the Walking Dead, has come aboard Noah Hawley’s formally titled Pale Blue Dot sci-fi drama, joining Natalie Portman, Dan Stevens, Jon Hamm, and Zazie Beetz in the Fox Searchlight film.
Actor Jeremiah Birkett has also been cast in the pic which is based on a spec by Brian C Brown and Elliott Diguiseppi. It tells the story of a female astronaut who, upon returning to Earth from a mission in space, begins to slowly unravel and lose touch with reality.
Domingo, who next co-stars Barry Jenkins’ If Beale Street Could Talk, will play a Nasa official, while Birkett is space station Commander Hank Underwood.
Domingo is repped by Liebman Entertainment and Gersh. Birkett, whose credits include Netflix’s Atypical and CBS’ Seal Team, is repped by Hyperion and Matt Sherman Management.

Pale Blue Dot will have Natalie Portman play an astronaut who’s dealing with odd after-effects from her time in space.
The developing drama, Pale Blue Dot, appears to be putting an outer space spin on post-traumatic stress disorder, this time as experienced by a female astronaut, rather than armed service personnel. The project, which had originally tapped Reese Witherspoon as its star, is, instead, looking at a headliner in Natalie Portman, who’s logged plenty of space time in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.
Portman is in talks with Fox Searchlight to nab the lead role in Pale Blue Dot, reports Variety. Should the deal be finalised, she'll play a successful astronaut who returns home – presumably to fantastic fanfare – only to experience a bizarre change in personality; perhaps the result of a very real phenomenon that occurs after a person is stuck in space for long periods of time.

This week’s biggest upcoming project was one so weird that we needed a few days to process it. It has been called Godzilla meets Being John Malkovich and Adaptation (possibly even Lost in Translation for good measure), and if it seems like those two titles don’t add up in anyway whatsoever, you’re not far off.
The movie is Colossal, and THR reports is set to star Anne Hathaway. Hathaway plays a woman returning to her hometown from New York after losing her job. Upon returning home, she discovers that a giant lizard is attacking Tokyo, and she feels strangely connected to the incident via her mind.
Colossal isn’t even some tongue-in-cheek Spike Jonze project but coming from Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes), and aiming to be sold at this year’s Cannes Film Festival market. “Colossal is my most ambitious script so far, and probably also the most personal one.

If you ever wondered what happens after Sandra Bullock returns to Earth at the end of "Gravity," then perhaps Reese Witherspoon's next project will hold the answer. The actress, last seen in the comedy flop "Hot Pursuit," is heading into orbit with "Pale Blue Dot." Brian C. Brown and Elliott Diguiseppi have penned the script that follows an astronaut who returns home after a long mission in space, and starts to break down when plunked back into her perfect American life. It's certainly intriguing, but this one isn't quite ready to leave the launchpad. The project is set up at Fox Searchlight, with Witherspoon producing, but no director is attached at the moment. But, with a studio already aboard, that's a sign of confidence and we're sure some decent names will want to take a look at what sounds like some interesting and original material.

Reese Witherspoon is keeping her eye on projects that interest her, tracking down different material and producing the films she wants to make. She’s now attached to produce and star in Pale Blue Dot.Despite its astronaut-heavy plot, don’t go thinking that she’s looking to make the next Gravity. This is a story about a married astronaut who returns from space and kicks off an affair with one of her colleagues. Affected by the experience of spending a long time in space and seeing the Earth from a distance, she falls into a downward spiral, a situation only made worse when her lover strikes up his own affair with a trainee. The story has its grounding in a real-life story, that of former Nasa officer Lisa Marie Nowak, who was arrested for attempting to kidnap a romantic rival in 2007. With a tone that The Hollywood Reporter has...

With Hot Pursuit, her buddy comedy with Sofia Vergara, proving a hot mess at the box office after getting raked over the coals by critics, Reese Witherspoon is retreating back into dramatic territory for Pale Blue Dot.
Witherspoon, who was Oscar-nominated earlier this year for her performance in Wild, will portray a successful female astronaut who returns home from an extended mission, only to find her mind unraveling as she attempts to readjust to a seemingly perfect American life. The pic, written by Brian C. Brown and Elliott Diguiseppi (the Black List scribe behind Uncle Shelby), explores the idea that astronauts experience an unusual form of mental illness when they return home, finding it tremendously difficult to regain a grip on earthbound reality.
Buzz is strong on this one, with Witherspoon also producing through her Pacific Standard banner. Hollywood has been hot on space-related dramas since the runaway success of Gravity,...
