Everyone feels like they’re inventing love, the first time they experience it. Mika is no exception. The merry-eyed, free-spirited heroine of sunswept, pulsatingly youthful Swedish love story “The Heart,” is played by Fanni Metelius (“Force Majeure“) in a light, summery performance all the more remarkable because Metelius is also the writer and debut director here. Mika is a sexually liberated young woman who, when we meet her, has pronounced precociously absolutist views on relationships: They’re not for her.

The heart wants what it wants, but does not get – this is the premise of Swedish actress-director Fanni Metelius’s debut The Heart (Hjartat), about a young photographer Mika and her musician boyfriend Tesfay who are madly in love, yet cannot seem to make their relationship work. While The Heart treads familiar ground, Metelius’s directorial vision is assured and the film’s packaging trendy. The net result is an engaging portrait of a modern-day Swedish relationship, whilst carrying some strong messages about female sexuality and independence. The film made its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, under the Bright Future section. Set in Sweden, The Heart chronicles the progressive development of the romantic relationship between Mika (starring Metelius herself) and Tesfay (Ahmed...

Love is not necessarily all you need in The Heart, a modern-day Swedish romance about a couple that has a hard time staying together despite their mutual affection. Written and directed by and starring Fanni Metelius (Force Majeure), who plays an art student trying to make it with her musician beau (newcomer Ahmed Berhan), this well-acted two-hander doesn’t feel like anything new under the sun, although it has a nice level of emotional honesty and never shies away from the touchier sides of relationships. After premiering in Rotterdam’s Bright Future section, it could find theatrical distribution in Scandinavian territories and...

Fanni Metelius, previously seen in Ruben Östlund's Force Majeure, will debut her own feature film The Heart at International Film Festival Rotterdam’s Bright Future Competition section. More than just an actress in an international hit film Matelius is clearly a quadruple-threat. She directed, wrote, and edited The Heart as well as starring in it, and we are pleased to debut the trailer below. If you love me, why don't you fuck me! The first love. But an invisible conflict, an unnamable shame, stirs between their sheets. An insidious power game is in play, with its rules changing like music beats at the parties in Gothenburg, Stockholm and Ibiza. Behind closed doors and beautifying filters lies a raw reality where Mika’s control over...

Screen rounds up the films from across the globe that could launch at Cannes…
With less than a month to go until the Cannes Film Festival announces its line-up at its annual Paris press conference on April 14, Screen looks at what could make it into Official Selection and the parallel sections of Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week.
UK and Ireland
The UK could have one of its strongest Cannes for years with hot favourites for a competition slot including Andrea Arnold’s Shia Labeouf-starring Us road movie American Honey and Ken Loach’s gritty Northern England-set drama I, Daniel Blake. It would be Loach’s 12th time in competition.
Ben Wheatley is also reportedly gunning for an Official Selection slot for his 1970s Boston-set, gangland thriller Free Fire, potentially Out of Competition or in Midnight Screenings. He was last in Cannes with Sightseers in Directors’ Fortnight.
Other UK hopefuls include Stephen Frears’ Florence Foster Jenkins and Indian...

Celluloid Dreams handles Valley of Shadows; Media Luna boards Little Wing; Indie Sales represents The Giant.
The old adage of ‘leaving them wanting more’ was certainly on display at the Works In Progress pitches at Goteborg’s Nordic Film Market this year (full line-up below).
The most-anticipated pitch of the session was Johannes Nyholm’s feature debut The Giant. The director showed several scenes from the film, but refrained from showing footage of the fantastical Giant as he said the VFX was still being worked on.
Also holding back were the producers of Cold Case Hammarskjold, the latest provocative documentary from Mads Brugger (of The Ambassador and The Red Chapel fame), about the death of Swedish diplomat and author Dag Hammarskjold.
Co-producer Andreas Rocksen said the filmmakers had a new theory about how Hammarskjold’s plane went down in 1961, but he said the theory won’t be revealed until the film is ready.

Director: Ruben Östlund; Screenwriter: Ruben Östlund; Starring: Johannes Bah Kuhnke, Lisa Loven Kongsli, Vincent Wettergren, Clara Wettergren, Kristofer Hivju, Fanni Metelius; Running time: 120 mins; Certificate: 15
The latest striking, singular foreign film to fall prey to the clutches of Hollywood remake artists, Swedish director Ruben Östlund's Force Majeure is a gloriously uncomfortable deconstruction of masculinity and cowardice.
A middle-class Swedish family holidaying in the Alps find their picture-perfect facade beginning to crack after a not-quite-brush with mortality. During lunch at a mountaintop restaurant, a seemingly distant avalanche crashes down over the terrace and envelops everything in sight. It's a deftly executed exclamation mark of a scene, and sets in motion the almost unbearably quiet domestic drama that follows.
The disaster movie setup rapidly gives way to something much pricklier and more gripping - as it turns out, the avalanche is at a safe distance from the restaurant, but it leaves chaos in its wake nonetheless.
