For Lee Sung Jin, Beef is the first show that bears his name as the creator and showrunner — it’s also the most of himself he’s ever poured into a project. When the 10 episodes dropped on Netflix in early April, critics fawned over the dark comedy and its culturally specific study of anger, which begins with a road rage incident that leads to a contentious feud between Danny (Steven Yeun) and Amy (Ali Wong). In the spring of 2019, Lee Sung Jin was driving home through Los Angeles traffic from his job as a writer on the animated series Undone, at the end of a perfectly fine day in his dream profession. Sitting at a red light, he missed the change to green while studying Waze. A driver in a white SUV behind him leaned on his horn. Then, as Lee recalls, the man pulled up alongside Lee’s car, “said a bunch of shit, and zoomed away.”

The creators behind series “Tuca & Bertie,” “Gordita Chronicles,” and “Whistleblower” have issued statements alleging the Warner Bros. Discovery merger has had disastrous effects on female Poc showrunners.
The statements, published as an addendum to a December 21 Writers Guild of America report on the effects of mega-mergers, are titled “How the Warner Bros. Discovery Merger Hurts Workers and Diversity.” The report claims the Wbd merger de-prioritized female-led series featuring stars of color and ultimately led to the shows’ cancellations.
“The casualties of this mega-merger include numerous projects created by, featuring and/or centering the experiences of women and people of color,” the statement reads, citing multiple projects “including ‘Batgirl,’ one of very few mainstream superhero films to feature a Latina lead actress; ‘Full Frontal’ with Samantha Bee, one of a handful of woman-hosted late-night shows; ‘Gordita Chronicles,’ a series about a Dominican immigrant family whose showrunner was a Latina woman; ‘Tuca & Bertie,...

The Writers Guild of America West released a new bulletin Monday slamming Warner Bros. Discovery for its film and television cancellations as part of its postmerger cost-cutting, saying they prove that the guild’s previous warnings that consolidation in Hollywood would stifle creativity and diversity in entertainment are coming true.
“Absent government intervention, this cycle of reactive consolidation will likely continue until it leaves just three or four companies controlling all content, while content creators and consumers pay the price for these costly mergers,” WGA West warned.
The bulletin also included testimonials from three creators of TV shows canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery: Claudia Forestieri (“The Gordita Chronicles”), Lisa Hanawalt (“Tuca & Bertie”) and Moises Zamora (“Whistleblower”).

“Tuca and Bertie,” the acclaimed adult animated comedy starring Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong, has been canceled by Adult Swim after two seasons on the channel.
Creator Lisa Hanawalt announced the news on Wednesday via a Twitter post, stating that while she hopes to continue the series someday, it won’t be moving forward on Adult Swim.
This marks the first Adult Swim series cancellation since parent company Warner Bros. Discovery more closely merged its two animation studios, Cartoon Network Studios and Warner Bros. Animation. “Tuca and Bertie,” which is a Tornante Company production, was not a casualty of the restructuring, a source close to the matter confirmed to IndieWire.
“I still have a beautiful and weird ending to ‘T&b’ in mind, hopefully someday we’ll get the chance to finish this story,” Hanawalt said in her post. “In the meantime, I’m not done creating. I’ve witnessed...

“Tuca & Bertie has sadly been cancelled,” series creator Lisa Hanawalt tweeted on Wednesday. “To all our fans – we love you and can’t thank you enough for your support over the years. Please never stop making weird fan art (and dressing up as the characters for Halloween!), it brings me endless joy.”

Tuca & Bertie is facing a second cancellation.
Series creator Lisa Hanawalt announced on Twitter Wednesday that Adult Swim has canceled the animated series after two seasons there. The cable channel revived Tuca & Bertie in 2020 following Netflix’s cancellation of the show after a single season.
“Working with Adult Swim was very creatively fulfilling, our execs were all smart and thoughtful, and I’m grateful that we got the space to make all these wild and heartfelt episodes about things that matter to me very much,” Hanawalt wrote.
She also noted that she hopes to give the series a proper ending at some point: “I still have a beautiful and weird ending for T&b in mind, hopefully someday we’ll get a chance to finish the story. In the meantime, I’m not done creating. I’ve witnessed so many people connecting...

This article contains spoilers for season 3 of Tuca & Bertie
Even in its shift from Netflix to Adult Swim and HBO Max, animated comedy Tuca & Bertie isn’t afraid to tackle heavy topics. Season 2 sees Bertie (Ali Wong) start therapy to deal with her anxiety and childhood trauma, with her growth continuing on into season 3. Tuca’s (Tiffany Haddish) sobriety is a big part of the series and we get to see how that decision both enriches her life and makes some things more challenging. Given that creator Lisa Hanawalt also served as the production designer for BoJack Horseman, it’s really no surprise that Tuca & Bertie is able to adeptly balance serious issues with humor.
The series isn’t funny because its characters are dealing with trauma, but rather because their situations are both absurd and completely relatable. Even though Tuca and Bertie are anthropomorphized birds that...

Although “Tuca & Bertie” navigates difficult subjects such as mental health and sexual assault, creator Lisa Hanawalt isn’t trying “to be overtly political or topical” with her series.
“I’m just telling stories from my point of view — things that affect me and my friends, and the things we’ve experienced,” she said.
The adult animated sitcom revolves around best friends Tuca Toucan (Tiffany Haddish) and Roberta “Bertie” Songthrush (Ali Wong), two anthropomorphic bird women living in the fantastical city known as Bird Town. In the recently completed third season on Adult Swim, the series highlighted two topics seldom covered on screen: menstruation and reproductive health. “So many of the women I know suffer from endometriosis, from Pcos [polycystic ovary syndrome], from cysts,” Hanawalt said. “It’s such a huge problem, and it’s surprisingly difficult to diagnose.”
In Episode 2, Tuca suffers from a chronic condition related to her menstrual cycle, causing severe abdominal cramps,...

‘Tuca and Bertie,’ Stellar Animation, and Learning to Treat TV as a Single-Screen Experience (Again)
Even in their truncated form (post-Netflix), the opening credits of “Tuca & Bertie” are an eye-grabbing embodiment of what makes the Adult Swim series such a unique, all-consuming pleasure. Front and center are the two bird-stars and best friends, Tuca (voiced by Tiffany Haddish) and Bertie (Ali Wong), whose relatable, winsome pursuit of their passions fills out each episode. Soon enough, Bertie’s bird-boyfriend Speckle (Steven Yeun) dances onscreen, a welcome third-wheel who’s playfully pushed aside so the main duo can fly off to their own drive-in movie date.
Those choice moments make up the Season 3 credits in their entirety, just as those three characters make up the joyful core of “Tuca & Bertie.” But it’s not just who and what that make Lisa Hanawalt’s animated lead-in so engaging — it’s how. Tuca and Bertie aren’t just dropped into frame; they’re strutting directly at you.

Tuca & Bertie are back and facing new challenges in Adult Swim‘s first look at Season 3, which is set to arrive Sunday, July 10. The animated comedy featuring the vocal talents of Tiffany Haddish as Tuca and Ali Wong as Bertie follows the bird girl besties as they navigate the ups and downs of adult life. The girls are making way for another confidently weird season full of new emotional and vegetative growths, per the new chapter’s logline. Tuca is dating someone new, but will the relationship bear fruit? And Bertie has a new boss, but will they be sweet or salty? Only time will tell. And adding to the mix is Speckle (Steven Yeun) who is also going through some stuff. (Credit: Adult Swim) “I can’t wait for everyone to catch up on all the latest calamity and soul-searching from these birds,” said series creator and executive producer Lisa Hanawalt.

I love making lists. Plenty of critics bemoan their annual duty of ranking the year’s best TV shows — and rightfully so. Indignation is the only rational response to being asked to weigh your personal subjective opinions against professional objective analysis in order to winnow 500 new programs into a hierarchical list of the 10 “best “shows. If your picks are too predictable, did you dig deep enough? If they’re too obscure, are you too far removed from popular culture? And can any one person really have seen every top-tier series released over a 365-day span?
But lists, especially Top 10 lists, are also a gift. Not only do they provide an excuse to look back and organize your thoughts on the year that was, but they help audiences find more, better TV — whether it’s by discovering diamonds in the rough or giving hastily labeled pebbles a second look. The ubiquity...

The animated series Tuca & Bertie, starring Ali Wong and Tiffany Haddish, will return to Adult Swim for Season 3.
Adult Swim previously picked up the animated series, which hails from Bojack Horseman‘s Lisa Hanawalt, after its first season when it was cancelled by Netflix in 2019.
Created by Lisa Hanawalt, the series revolves around best friends Tuca (Haddish) and Bertie (Wong), who also happen to be full of ghosts. Bertie is busy excavating her inner ghouls with the help of a therapist, while Tuca prefers to stuff hers behind the toilet. She’ll deal with them later, right now she’s just too busy trying not to be single anymore! Meanwhile, Speckle (Steven Yeun) is building a new house but soon finds he’s driven to the brink of insanity…good thing he’s just a cartoon.
Hanawalt executive produces with Raphael Bob-Waksberg, Noel Bright, Steven A. Cohen, Haddish, and Wong.

Photo: ‘Tuca and Bertie'/Hulu Lisa Hanawalt’s chaotic yet relatable take on millennial womanhood is back for season two after Netflix’s cancellation binge. ‘Tuca and Bertie’, which originally premiered on Netflix in 2019 to rave reviews, has risen from the fire like a phoenix, now calling Adult Swim it’s new home (or nest). Now that the second season is halfway through, the series is truly developing into something special, delving deeper into their characters and showing sides of them that they didn’t even know. The second season uses the characters of Tuca and Bertie to explore the different phases in life that women often go through, whether that is the isolation one feels from not being in a relationship to how trauma affects your seemingly mundane daily life. While ‘Tuca and Bertie’ is funnier than ever, it also reveals the darkest sides of these lovable characters. Related...

Seven years ago, Lisa Hanawalt published a comic on Hazlitt Magazine’s website depicting an anthropomorphic, topless toucan belly-up on the floor of her apartment trimming her toenails, clippings flying into the air. “This is Tuca. She’s a toucan. She lives in the city,” the first panel reads. It was the germ of an idea that would become Tuca & Bertie, Hanawalt’s joyously surreal yet painfully real cartoon about female friendship, getting by in the big city, overcoming trauma, and, yes, bird people.

The second episode of “Tuca and Bertie’s” second season starts with a simple promise. On their way to her would-be sister-in-law’s bachelorette party, Bertie (Ali Wong) tells Tuca (Tiffany Haddish) how worried she is about fitting in with so many women she doesn’t know. Tuca, always the life of the party, isn’t worried about that, but she is a bit concerned that her sobriety will be a buzzkill. So the two best bird-friends make an agreement: Bertie won’t drink, in solidarity with Tuca, and Tuca won’t leave Bertie by herself, alone with their judgmental party-goers.
To say that promise gets tested isn’t much of a spoiler. After all, “Tuca and Bertie” — Adult Swim’s animated comedy from creator Lisa Hanawalt — is a sitcom, and sitcoms are built on simple premises (or promises) that result in extreme hijinks (and hilarity). Tuca & Bertie makes the leap from Netflix to Adult Swim this summer with surprisingly little malice. It has become customary for network-hopping shows to at least give a nudge in the ribs to the outlet that canceled them. But the new episodes of Lisa Hanawalt’s bubbly and neurotic celebration of codependent avian friendship jump right back into business as if nothing has changed; there’s nary a chirp about cold-hearted streamers with cancelation trigger fingers.
Maybe Hanawalt and company know that their characters have more on their animated minds than petty broadcast grievances — Bertie’s panic attacks are, after all, getting worse....

“Tuca & Bertie” Season 2 will premiere June 13 at 11:30 p.m. on Adult Swim, Variety has learned exclusively.
The animated series that sees comedians Tiffany Haddish and Ali Wong voice the respective characters was formerly a Netflix series. But after the streamer canceled it in 2019, Adult Swim swept in to revive the show.
The 10-episode second season will see Bertie trying to excavate her “inner ghouls” with the help of a therapist, while Tuca “prefers to stuff hers behind the toilet,” the network previews. While she may get to them later, her priority is trying to find someone to date. Meanwhile, Speckle (Steven Yeun) is busy building a new house, but soon finds he’s driven to the brink of insanity.

It’s now or never for “BoJack Horseman” to win the Best Animated Series Emmy, and there’s no better representative than the penultimate episode, “The View from Halfway Down.” This summary statement, about titular horse BoJack (Will Arnett) encountering everyone who’s died in the series at a dinner party, forces him to confront the reasons behind his substance abuse and bad behavior. (Indeed, with characters like She-Moose and He-Horse, there are elements that seem ...
