I’ve been a huge fan of Steven DeGennaro since I saw his feature film, Found Footage 3D, at Screamfest in 2016. We’re in the last remaining days of October, meaning many of us will be trying to cram in as many horror movies as possible between now and Halloween. For my last round of Shudder picks this month, I thought I’d go with a much looser theme: there’s nothing that ties these titles together except that they’re really good movies I think you should watch. Some you may recognize, others may be less familiar to you. All of them are worth streaming on Shudder.
The Bride of Frankenstein (1935, dir. James Whale) It’s not officially October without the Universal Monsters, so big thanks to Shudder for adding most of the big ones to their expanding library of streaming options. There’s no wrong choice when it comes to the classics, but I’ll make the case that Universal never got better than The Bride of Frankenstein, James Whale...

Here are some upcoming movies that might be hard to track down, but are well worth the effort of doing so...
Den of Geek, last month, attended the London FrightFest film festival to indulge in five days of genre films and social anxiety (our favourites).
You can only see so much of the line-up, due to the boring constraints of time, physics and human biology, but we saw a lot of films, a few of which we really need to tip you off about. Partly because you won’t want to miss them when they do get a general release in the UK, but also because they’re probably going to need your support.
Here are six upcoming genre films to keep an eye out for.

There is no shortage of bad found footage movies that have plagued the horror genre since The Blair Witch Project exploded onto the scene in 1999. Thanks to that film’s massive success and subsequent redefining of the genre, anyone with two friends and a camcorder suddenly became a director of feature-length horror films, most of which consisted of 90 minutes of aimless picking around and bickering in the name of “conflict” until the camera shook and cut to black in the final moments. This is a fact not lost upon writer/director Steven DeGennaro in his debut feature, Found Footage 3D, a film that is a brilliant sendup of the subgenre, a loving tribute to found footage, and one of the best surprises in horror this year.

A while back we shared an Indiegogo campaign for a movie promising to do for found footage movies what Scream did for slashers. It was called Found Footage 3D and it is still one of the smartest pitch videos we've seen from any movie on Indiegogo. Now the first trailer is online and boy does it deliver on that pitch. Written and directed by Steven DeGennaro, Found Footage 3D is, as the name implies, a deconstruction of your standard found footage horror movie. It's about some filmmakers who set out to make the world's first 3D found footage horror movie, only to end up becoming the unwitting participants in their own found footage horror movie. The meta aspect may seem initially confusing, but just press play and you'll instantly understand. Found Footage 3D...

There’s been a glut of found-footage horror films ever since the original The Blair Witch Project back in 1999. Now, on the cusp of a new Blair Witch film and no sign of indie horror filmmakers slowing down production of these (usually less than stellar) flicks, comes a new meta-narrative film that pokes fun while hopefully delivering some fresh scares of its own. Found Footage 3D is a mockumentary about the making of a fake found-footage horror film called Spectre Of Death, and appears to mock the tropes of the subgenre and the glibness with which people approach these projects before delving into some scarier (and bloodier) fare.
Found Footage 3D is, of course, an absurd concept. Why would some random filmmakers be shooting in 3D in the first place? Luckily, the film, directed by Steven DeGennaro, is well aware of this absurdity, and seems to be a meta-deconstruction ...

Welcome to Holiday Favorites, a series in which Slackerwood contributors and our friends talk about the movies we watch during the holiday season, holiday-related or otherwise.
Today's pick is from seasoned sound designer turned writer/director Steven DeGennaro, whose short film First Date premiered during the Afs ShortCase at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival. DeGennaro successfully wrapped a crowdfunding campaign and raised over $35,000 for his first feature, Found Footage 3D. Here's his holiday favorite:
There’s only one holiday movie in my family, and that’s 29th Street. The movie tells the sort-of, almost, but not-really "true" story of the first winner of the New York State Lottery, Frank Pesce (who wrote the film and plays a supporting role). Danny Aiello plays the domineering father of the clan, whose son, played by Anthony Lapaglia, is supposedly the luckiest man alive. So lucky, in fact, that it turns out to be a curse.

Previously in this series: 'V/H/S: Viral's' Marcel Sarmiento and 'ABCs of Death 2's' Alejandro Brugues. Writer-director Steven DeGennaro is almost ready to unleash what he hopes will do for the found footage genre what Scream did for slasher flicks. The catch? He and his team need a little extra money for what they hope will be an astounding visual effect for Found Footage 3D. They've taken to Indiegogo to raise $35,000 (they've got about $20,000 so far).
