Science fiction has long been a favorite genre for me in literature and film. At Texas A&M, I was a member of Cepheid Variable, a student group devoted to science fiction, fantasy, horror, science and technology. I first saw John Carpenter's cult classic Dark Star at a Cepheid Variable B-Movie Night, and Something Wicked This Way Comes as part of Cepheid's 1984 AggieCon, the largest student-run fan convention in the world.
My insatiable appetite for science fiction has me often yearning for more of it at local festivals, so I was ectastic to discover that Austin's first science fiction film festival, Other Worlds Austin, will be held at Galaxy Highland from Thursday, December 4 through Saturday, December 6. Even more exciting is that former Austin Film Festival programmer Bears Fonté is the fest's founder and director of programming. I've long been a fan of Fonté's programming and we share a passion for short films.

The 6th annual Minneapolis Underground Film Festival makes its move into October this year where it will be screening on Oct. 3-6 at the St. Anthony Main Theater. The fest, while screening new films from all over, does a fantastic job of screening movies by local Minnesota filmmakers.
Some of these locally produced films include Mark Nielson’s spooky road trip flick Land of Sky Blue Water; Adam Jacobs’ suspense comedy Weekend Hat, which was also produced entirely by high school students; Dave Ash’s sci-fi drama Connected, which is co-directed by Paul von Stoetzel, whose short film Twisted Sister screens before the feature; Donny West’s autobiographical documentary Dazzle (The Donny West Story); and Phil Holbrook’s drama Tilt. There are also loads of short film programs featuring work by local filmmakers.
Other feature films to be on the lookout for include Daniel Martinico’s L.A. nightmare Ok,...

How about a murder-mystery horror film filled with plot twists, action ... oh, and a boatload of hotties running around. Well, sailor, iCrime is just the film you've been looking for.
Vicious Circle Films' iCrime, starring Sarah Fletcher, Kelly Noonan and Travis Brorsen, is like a grown-up version of "iCarly," that is if Carly was being blackmailed with an old sex tape and was forced to venture into Hollywood's seedy underbelly to save herself. On second thought, not really like "iCarly" at all. Way better.
Director Bears Fonté's film will be released on DVD on September 27 and will contain deleted scenes amongst the bonus features.
