Carolina Lightcap, President of Disney Channels Worldwide, has quit her job effective immediately, and Gary Marsh, who was Chief Creative Officer and the President of Entertainment, has succeeded her. Lightcap (pictured left) had been with the company since 2000 and provided no explanation for her departure. Instead, both she and Anne Sweeney, co-chair of Disney Media networks and President, Disney/ABC Television group, reflected on the channels’ success in expanding its audience during Lightcap's tenure. “I’m extremely proud of the accomplishments over the past 11 years at both Disney Latin America and Disney...

The Bataan Death March … With Chocolate
Another Television Critics Association Summer Tour is over and this was probably the most memorable one I’ve ever done, for a whole host of reasons.
Another critic once described the press tour (which usually lasts for two solid weeks with no breaks at all) as the Bataan Death March With Cocktails. Since I’m not much of a drinker that isn’t true for me. Instead, for me it’s a death march with chocolate since the cable and broadcast networks were constantly tempting us with all kinds of chocolates, from marshmallows covered with dark chocolate to chocolate covered strawberries to all kinds of fancy fou-fou chocolate desserts.
ABC even sent a box of amazing chocolate chip cookies to my room where they begged me to eat them! Talk about evil.
As I said, this TCA was very memorable. The day I arrived in Los Angeles,...

Mark Indelicato (left) with Ugly Betty Boyfriend Austin (Ryan McGinnis)
My first question is: what the hell took the Disney Channel so long in greenlighting a High School Musical-like TV series? With the break-out success of Glee, they're surely kicking themselves that they didn't get Madison High, the pilot of which is currently being produced, on the air much sooner.
My second question is: is Ugly Betty's Mark Indelicato, who has joined the cast as drama club president Harvey Flynn, going to be the Disney Channel's first fully out scripted gay character?
High School Musical famously included the character of Ryan, who had many stereotypically "gay" qualities, including good grooming and a constantly changing selection of fashionable chapeaus, and who many viewers interpreted to be gay. But his sexuality was never confirmed in any of the movies (although it definitely was in Disney's touring stage production).

With Miley Cyrus graduating from "Hannah Montana" and Selena Gomez leaving "Wizards of Waverly Place", Disney is in need of a new star and a new sitcom. The mouse house has decided to launch the career of Debby Ryan who plays Bailey Pickett on "The Suite Life on Deck".
"It's been thrilling to watch Debby grow from an unknown actress to one of our top stars," said Gary Marsh, Disney Channel Worldwide entertainment prexy. Ryan is to star as the titular character of "Jessie", a sitcom about a teen from rural Texas who moves to New York and becomes a nanny to a wealthy family with four children.
The new series would be previewed at the channel's upfront presentation on Wednesday, March 16 in New York where the 17-year-old actress is scheduled to attend. The plan is to make "Jessie" a companion series to "Good Luck Charlie" this Fall. Production will...

Here's last week's caption pic winner. This week's caption pic is at the bottom of the page.
Thanks to everyone for participating! The winner is ...
"The human mullet - business on top, party down below."
Thanks to Gaymer for this week's winning caption.
Happy Birthday to Matt Lucas, who turns 37 this weekend.
Michael Cudlitz is confident that Southland will be returning for another season: “I think the show’s getting picked up. I think it’s a matter of for how many.” Take a look at this ad for Fosters (Australian for bee-yah). Some are saying it's homophobic, while others think it's just pointing out the ridiculousness of straight guys' insecurities. What do you think?
Out veteran Disney animator Andreas Deja has some interesting things to say about gay visibility in Disney films. So what's Deja's view? "Is there ever going to be a family that has two dads or two mums?...

To Spartacus Or Not To Spartacus? That Is The Question!
One of the trickier, and more challenging, aspects of my job as editor of AfterElton.com is keeping the staff shackled deciding how much to cover a new show with gay or bisexual content, or when an existing show adds a gay or bisexual character. What's tricky about that exactly? Well, if you have to ask, clearly you didn't watch the Spartacus prequel, Gods of the Arena, which wrapped up last week.
If you had, you'd know I made a pretty big deal out of the fact that the prequel was going to give gay gladiator Barca (Antonio Te Maioha) a new love interest named Auctus. Or that after interviewing Spartacus co-creator Steven DeKnight, we decreed that Gods of the Arena might be gayer than the original and that there was a steamy gay sex scene you wouldn't want to miss.

High School Musical did wonders for Zac Efron’s Career, so it comes as no surprise that the all-singing all-dancing franchise has been given the green light for a small-screen series.
The project – tentatively titled Madison High – will channel the big-screen version, with singing, dancing and dramatic teenage twists to keep fans hooked week upon week.
With all the success of Fox’s rival show Glee, Disney is eager to remind audiences that the popular concept of a musical set against the backdrop of a high school, was their original idea.
"We introduced the joys of musicals and musical theatre to a whole new generation, and kids and families embraced the themes explored in those movies - about expressing oneself and following your dreams," entertainment and chief creative officer for Disney Channels Worldwide, Gary Marsh told Variety.

All of the "High School Musical" kids, including Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale, may have graduated from East High, but Ms. Darbus' drama class lives on in the Disney Channel's new pilot inspired by the "High School Musical" franchise.

Disney Channel has handed a pilot order to Madison High, a music and dance-driven comedy pilot featuring the melodramatic drama teacher Ms. Darbus (Alyson Reed) from the High School Musical franchise and a troupe of theater students. Disney channel put Madison High, described as the channel's first musical comedy and its most ambitious series to date, on fast-track development in November when it began preliminary casting. Production on the pilot begins in March for a potential early 2012 series launch. “High School Musical introduced the joys of musicals and musical theater to a whole new generation and kids and families," Disney Channel topped Gary Marsh said. "And now, with Madison High, we hope to give kids a whole new set of characters with whom to engage – along with more great original music, dance numbers and songs.” Madison High will feature four original songs written by Matthew Gerrard, Robbie Nevil, Jamie Houston,...

Gay characters are all over teen TV these days, as EW’s cover story reports this week. Our cover boys Darren Criss and Chris Colfer — as Glee’s Blaine and Kurt — are leading the way, of course, but there’s also a staggering number of gay teens across the dial these days. And better yet, the characters designated as gay are getting more diverse and well-rounded. There’s 90210′s hunky playboy Teddy, Pretty Little Liars’ gorgeous and popular Emily, Skins’ punky lesbian cheerleader (yes!) Tea, and Shameless’ tough-kid Ian — to name just a few. In fact, youth-oriented networks lead the...

A Picture Might Be Worth A Thousand Words. Too Bad One Of Them Wasn't "Gay"
While it's ludicrous to say anything "positive" came out of the horrible shooting in Tucson last week, those events have given the Glbt community one very remarkable development — a bona fide hero who happens to be an out gay man. That hero is twenty-year-old University of Arizona student Daniel Hernandez, Jr. who is being so lauded for his actions that he not only spoke at the memorial for the victims on Wednesday night, but sat to the right of President Obama.
I confess that because I've been attending the TCA in Los Angeles this week, I haven't been able to follow the coverage as much as I would've liked. So what I can't say with any certainty is whether or not the fact that Hernandez is gay has been widely reported. I do know, however,...

So far, the comments are mostly pro-gay, except for a few "If they include them I'll switch to Nickelodeon," and some person who insists that Miley Cyrus and all of The Jonas Brothers are gay ... oh, and The Jonas Brothers aren't really brothers, and are gay for each other. Austrian television celebrity Alfons Haider (who many believe was the inspiration for Sascha Baron Cohen's Bruno character) will be dancing with a straight male partner on the next season on Austria's Dancing Stars. In ratings news, CBS has renewed Big Bang Theory for three more seasons. Meanwhile, ratings for last night's Southland aren't out yet, but last week's season premiere ratings were on par with last season.

Last month, AfterElton.com published the article "When it Comes to Gay Characters, When Will the Teen Channels Grow Up?" that examined how inclusive The Disney Channel and TeenNick are when it comes to gay characters.
At the time, AfterElton tried to speak with someone at the Disney Channel, but the network declined to provide any of the network's executives for an interview, instead issuing a statement saying in part, Disney aims to "... fulfill our brand promise to encourage kids to ‘express yourself,’ ‘believe in yourself,’ and ‘celebrate your family.’
This wasn't the first time AfterElton tried to address the issue with Disney. Back in 2008, we spoke with Gary Marsh, president of Disney Channel Worldwide asking why the network had yet to include any gay characters.
At the time, Marsh told us “There have been characters on Disney Channel who I think people have thought were gay.

The popular Disney Channel animated series Phineas and Ferb may be headed to the big screen.
The show, which launched in 2007, follows the adventures of two stepbrothers, their sister, Candace and their pet duckbill, Perry (who happens to also be a secret agent in eternal conflict with the wicked scientist Dr. Doofenshmirtz). On November 7th, the Disney Channel premiered a new show, Shake It Up!, that tells the story of a group of teens who work as dancers on a local TV show. But they’re often sabotaged in their efforts to get ahead by the flamboyant, stereotypically “gay” German exchange student Gunther (and his twin sister Tinka).

Disney has been amping the hype for its upcoming Tron Legacy movie for almost a year. With print, theatrical, gaming, collectible, clothing, theme park and social media marketing being done, it's clear to see that the company has re-considered the financial viability and consumer interest in this 28-year old franchise. With all of the Tron ancillary goods and marketing being done, for those of you born before the release of the original 1982 film it might be hard to believe that Tron bombed in theaters back then.
And now Disney has announced yet another new aspect of the growing Tron-tastic universe: an animated TV series, scheduled to premiere on Disnet FX in the summer of 2012. Titled Tron: Uprising, the show's setting is sandwiched in-between the aftermath of the original Tron movie, where Flynn and Tron brought down the despotic reign of the Master Control Program, and the new Tron Legacy,...

Walt Disney Co is launching a new 'preschool' TV channel, 'Disney Junior', offering shows based on both Disney and Marvel Comics characters.

It's no secret that Disney was looking to develop a Tron TV series. We discussed the news back in February when we didn't know if the series would be animated or live-action. Today, we've learned that the series will indeed be animated, and it will air on Disney Xd in the summer of 2012. The new show will be called, Tron: Uprising.
The series is being developed by Samurai Jack's Charlie Bean, who will exec produce and direct it. Tron: Legacy writers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are also working on the project, and will serve as consulting producers.
One of the biggest surprises for me about the series is the talented voice cast they've brought in! The voice cast includes Elijah Wood, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Mandy Moore, Paul Reubens, Nate Corddry, Lance Henriksen, and Bruce Boxleitner will also reprise his role as Tron!

Triple Threat: Dan Povenmire, Gary Marsh, and Swampy Marsh make mischief in the Phineas and Ferb offices.
Phineas and Ferb is the hippest, nerdiest, unlikeliest hit on TV -- and now Disney hopes it can be a SpongeBob-like cash cow.
What better way for a company to say danke schön to its rising-star creatives than hiring Wayne Newton and a bevy of feather-plumed showgirls to help express its feelings? Any lingering doubts Dan Povenmire and Jeff "Swampy" Marsh might have had about Disney's faith in their animated show, Phineas and Ferb, dissolved when Mr. Las Vegas himself started belting out the theme song for the program's Perry the Platypus character at last June's 2010 Licensing International Expo in Vegas. As Newton gave his own spin to lyrics like "He's a furry little flatfoot who'll never flinch from a fray" and dancers and actors, dressed like the show's characters,...

I wasn't sure how seriously Disney was taking Tron before Comic Con 2008, when it released the first teaser trailer...three years early. Yes, three years. At the time, Tron Legacy was supposed to be a 2011 movie. Then, of course, we learned the budget was about as big as anything not named Avatar and Disney rather quietly bumped it up a year. So now it opens in December.
The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Disney wants to milk this one for all it's worth. The plan is to make a cable series targeting kids ages 6-14. "Tron is another example of how we can take advantage of the intellectual property that the studio unit pays tens, if not hundreds, of millions to develop and market," said Disney's Gary Marsh, hopefully at his most corporate.

Back in 2008, Marvel Animation announced it was teaming up with Film Roman for "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes", an animated series featuring the classic "Avengers" lineup in anticipation of the upcoming live action film.
Given Disney's acquisition of Marvel, it should come as no surprise that the series will be coming to Disney Xd.
According to Hollywood Reporter, "The Avengers" will debut this Fall on Disney Xd to prime younger audiences for 2012's live-action "Avengers." Disney Channels' Entertainment President, Gary Marsh, said the network has been "pouring through the library of 7,000 Marvel characters looking for the next 'Spider-Man.'"
Last summer, "Spectacular Spider-Man" producer Greg Weisman revealed that Sony relinquished the "Spider-Man" TV rights back to Marvel in return for "some concessions vis-a-vis the live action 'Spider-Man' features." Potentially, that could mean that "Spider-Man" would also be free to appear in the "Avengers" animated series at some point.
