A magical location in The Island Between Tides
In the first part of my interview with Andrew Holmes and Austin Andrews on their latest film, The Island Between Tides, we discussed their fascination with time and their work with stars Paloma Kwiatkowski, Donal Logue and David Mazouz. In part two, we discuss their locations, aspects of storytelling, their feelings about screening at Fantaspoa and the way they captured the magic of the time-shifting island at the centre of their ghostly tale.
“The island was truly a magical place,” says Andrew. “We shot the film in Prince Rupert, British Colombia, which is the north-westmost point in Canada. Basically, it's just south of Ketchikan, Alaska, and it is a magical place. And that was probably the most difficult decision that I had to make going into this film was where to film this location. Paloma Kwiatkowski as Lily in The Island Between Tides
Somewhere between an adaptation of and a sequel to Jm Barrie’s play Mary Rose, The Island Between Tides is the story of a family whose lives are turned upside down by encounters with a magical island where time runs at a different pace. Lily (played as an adult by Paloma Kwiatkowski) is lost there briefly as a child and experiences a change of perspective as a result. Her return visit as an adult sees her flung forward 25 years into the future. Donal Logue plays the father and Camille Sullivan the sister who have to cope with her disappearances, while Logue’s Gotham co-star David Mazouz takes on the role of Jared, the son who grows up without her, also altered by the island’s influence and struggling with mental illness and substance abuse as a result.

Over 80 years of stories have made Batman one of the most enduring characters in pop culture history. In that time, the Dark Knight has also been the subject of more big-screen adaptations than any other superhero to date, starring in 11 live-action movies and counting. The Batman is the latest take on the character, with 2023’s The Flash set to bring back two other Caped Crusaders for a time-shattering adventure through the multiverse that will then lead into HBO Max’s Batgirl, where the Dark Knight will play a supporting role.
As much as we love seeing Batman in theaters, not all of these movies have been entirely successful. The same goes for the actors who’ve starred in these films. Every Batman fan has a favorite big-screen Dark Knight, one performer who they feel perfectly encapsulates all of the qualities that make the World’s Greatest Detective such a great character.

It’s kind of easy to take note when gangster movies are becoming a trend again since like everything else they’ll start popping out of the woodwork. One good thing about such movies is that there’s plenty of material to work with so that a lot of them don’t get old and tired that quickly. Plus, a lot of people happen to love gangster movies or even movies that have anything to do with organized crime in a peripheral manner. The main premise of the movie is that Gio, played by David Mazouz and Shiloh Fernandez, is set to visit his

As one of the most enduringly popular characters in any medium, Batman is inevitably one of the most heavily adapted, and the Caped Crusader finds himself comfortably ranking alongside Dracula and Sherlock Holmes as an almost ubiquitous presence on our screens.
When The Batman debuts in March 2022, Robert Pattinson will be the seventh actor to play a live-action Bruce Wayne in the space of a decade following Christian Bale and Ben Affleck in the movies, along with Kevin Conroy, Iain Glen, David Mazouz and Warren Christie in the various TV shows.
Outside of live-action, though, Batman has also been a regular fixture of DC’s animated output, starring in dozens upon dozens of movie and TV projects. One of the most underrated ones has recently landed on Netflix, too, and Batman: The Killing Joke managed to crack the streaming service’s Top 10 most-watched list just a few days ago, coming...

Netflix has always had a pretty good selection of horror flicks for fans of the genre to delve into, ranging from old-school classics to modern thrill-rides. As of right now, you can check out such hits as Child’s Play, Sinister, The Silence of the Lambs, The Witch and Cabin Fever, and with dozens of incredible thrillers, too, there’s no shortage of films to keep your adrenaline high and your heart racing. But for every phenomenal horror hit there are at least five stinkers, and one of those stinkers has somehow miraculously made its way into Netflix’s Top 10 Movies list today.
The Darkness is currently resting at the bottom of the list, sitting at #10, but the fact that it’s even there at all is utterly shocking. This terribly-received horror flick currently has an abysmal 3% on Rotten Tomatoes and 27/100 on Metacritic, and it’s widely considered to be one...

The amount of heroes taking part in “Crisis on Infinite Earths” is truly staggering. But the really mind-blowing part is that we still don’t know all of the surprise cameos that The CW has managed to pull off. Here’s one more that we can maybe add to the never-ending list, though.
Don’t get your hopes up too high just yet, but apparently, it’s possible that Gotham star David Mazouz will be returning as Bruce Wayne in the crossover event. We Got This Covered has had it confirmed by two separate sources that an appearance from Mazouz’s Bruce was in early drafts of the script, as with the cameos from the Titans and Doom Patrol casts that we’ve previously heard about. However, our sources are unable to confirm whether it actually ended up happening, as possible contractual obligations and scheduling conflicts could’ve gotten in the way.

Considering how Gotham concluded its five-season run this past spring, I’m not sure if I’m ready to think about any sort of primetime rival just yet. On the other hand, I’m totally down for DC continuing it as a comic book series just as they once did with Smallville, but that’s a discussion we’ve already had at length.
Regardless, nothing can stop diehard fans from wanting more or dreaming of what the future might bring. In fact, when the cast reunited for a panel conducted at DragonCon in Atlanta, they were asked about the possibility of a revival down the line.
Here’s what Harvey Bullock himself, Donal Logue, had to say when confronted with that question:

Gotham recently wrapped up its fifth and final season with a time jump and the reveal of Batman, albeit briefly. Although the series itself varied in quality, it was never afraid to gamble on more adventurous storylines and challenge its strong leading cast with multiple roles. However, it seems unlikely that we’ll be seeing more of the Gotham cast in future incarnations of the Dark Knight, at least according to recent interviews at Dragon Con in Atlanta.
A number of the stars discussed their time on Gotham and future plans while at the convention, including David Mazouz (Bruce Wayne), Sean Pertwee (Alfred Pennyworth), Robin Lord Taylor (Oswald Cobblepot), Maggie Geha (Ivy Pepper) and Donal Logue (Harvey Bullock). Ewan McGregor, Shiloh Fernandez, and Val Kilmer have reportedly joined the cast of the mob drama The Birthday Cake.
The film is the directorial debut from Jim Giannopoulos, who also wrote the original story and co-wrote the script with Fernandez and Diomedes Raul Bermudez. Lorraine Bracco, Ashley Benson (Pretty Little Liars) and David Mazouz (Gotham) are also featured in the cast. THR reports the following description for the film:
The indie will see Fernandez play Giovanni, who reluctantly continues the family tradition of bringing a cake to the home of his uncle Angelo (Kilmer) on the 10th anniversary of his father's death. When Gotham screened its pilot episode at conventions, I watched with fascination, because it showed such promise as a moody, atmospheric take on the pervasive corruption that created the antibody of The Batman. Sure, it wasn’t entirely based on eighty years of canon, but nothing could do that, so I was prepared.
I stopped watching with regularity halfway through the second season because it stopped being what was promised and became something else entirely. It was a ham-fisted, over-the-top camp take on a modern-day comic, more beholden to the ABC Batman series than the comics.
With each successive season, the twists came faster, the characters stopped making sense, and internal logic was found only in the dictionary. This was a manic Gotham City, where the line between good and evil, moral and corrupt, quality and crap was blurred with every scene.
While earlier a ratings darling, it crashed under...

In the eyes of this lifelong Batman fan, Gotham will forever remain a wonderful part of the character’s enduring mythos. I’m aware of how a percentage of you scoff at how it retold the Dark Knight’s beginnings – and those of his villains, for that matter – but it’s important that creators keep things fresh. After all, our hero couldn’t have gotten this far if everybody rehashed the same tales over and over again.
Over the five years that Gotham had been on the air, I couldn’t help making comparisons to Smallville in various news articles and reviews. And at a time like this, it’s hard not making another one. I say that because while both shows had a similar goal in fleshing out the backstory of a beloved icon, Smallville covered much more ground during its ten-season lifespan. Batman has arrived, and that means Gotham has said goodbye. The Fox drama ended on Thursday, having completed all of the origin stories it was telling about the Batman universe. It jumped ahead 10 years after Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) left Gotham. And while we never caught a glimpse of Bruce and only caught the briefest glimpse of Batman himself, now that the Penguin's got his monocle, Selina Kyle is all grown up, the Joker's all Jokered up, and Bruce is back in town, we all know what's about to happen next. In my view, last night’s series finale of Gotham provided quite the fitting end for the Batman prequel show. Having already wrapped up the “No Man’s Land” arc a week before, the producers were free to leap ten years forward into the future in order to show us the Dark Knight that David Mazouz’s Bruce Wayne grew up to be – in addition to planting the seeds for his epic rivalries with Joker, Penguin and Riddler. Oh yeah, his complicated romance with Selina Kyle was also renewed in a sense, as their relationship is the stuff of legend.
Given all that, I found it rather appropriate how the finale had been titled “The Beginning…,” thus making it feel like a pilot episode for a second series we’ll never get to see. Granted, the show’s five-year run at Fox has concluded, but there’s a way for...

Nanananananana Batman! After seasons and seasons of waiting, Batman has officially arrived on Gotham, bringing an end to the lengthy origin story of the caped crusader and all his best villains pals. The series finale picked up 10 years after Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) left Gotham, right before he was reportedly about to return, and right before one Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) was about to be released from prison. As Oswald got out and put together his soon-to-be iconic Penquin ensemble, Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) was investigating some mysterious figure flapping around the city and also trying to clear Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue) from being framed for murder, and then he had to save his...

(Warning: This story contains spoilers from the series finale of Fox’s “Gotham”)
After five seasons, The Dark Knight finally rose on “Gotham,” but only for a second.
The hour-long series finale of Fox’s Batman prequel finally delivered on the moment the whole series was building toward, with a close-up of Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) standing on a Gotham rooftop fully in his Batsuit.
“We always felt in the beginning of Season 1 that the last shot would be a close-up of Batman,” executive producer John Stephens told TheWrap, though he added that, initially, the 10-year flash-forward would be relegated to the back part of the episode. “We wanted to motivate his arrival. We wanted to make sure the audience understood why Batman had to come to Gotham at this moment in time. And it didn’t feel like we could tell that within five minutes.”

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Gotham” Season 5, Episode 12, “The Beginning…”]
Like the dutiful detective-turned-commissioner leading the cast, “Gotham” did exactly what it needed to do — in the series finale and final season overall. Charged with setting up the era of Batman (without ever saying his name), Fox’s crime drama took a bit of glee going through the motions, and even if the wild minds behind it couldn’t go full-tilt crazy in its waning hours, they did ensure a respectable legacy for an overtly beautiful and sneakily ambitious broadcast drama.
“The Beginnings…” — an apt finale title for a series always steaming toward its Bat-predecessors’ timelines — checked off box after box: The 10-year time jump sets up a return for Gotham’s favorite son, Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz), who’s been overseas becoming the hero the city needs. Before his new Wayne Tower can open, a devious plot to blow it up emerges courtesy of a mysterious new villain.

Gotham's ending delivered Batman's beginning. But as epic as the series finale of the Fox Batman prequel was in debuting the fully realized caped crusader, Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) was barely in the hour at all.

The bird has been sprung from his cage, and just in time to see how it all ends.
In TheWrap’s exclusive clip from Thursday’s series finale of “Gotham,” Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) has been released from prison and is walking out of his jail cell to a slew of Gotham’s press, dressed in all the penguin-suit glory fans of Fox’s Batman prequel series have been waiting for.
When he’s asked by a journalist about the first thing he’ll do now that he’s a free man, he responds: “I will lay flowers on the grave of my beloved mother.”
However, when the topic of Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) — and how Gordon put him in prison — comes up, Cobblepot says this: “The best revenge against Jim Gordon will be a life spent serving the city I love.”

Gotham‘s penultimate episode airs tonight as season 5 draws to a close and this new clip tells us fans that we can expect a very exciting name-drop that alludes to a key figure in Batman mythology: the Dark Knight’s future sidekick, Nightwing.
The scene in question can be found below and sees Lucius Fox (Chris Chalk) supplying Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) with some new gadgets for his fight to save Gotham. “Remember the Nightwing Project?” Lucius says to the teen hero. Bruce then replies: “Portable next-gen stealth tech.”
“Put it on any aircraft and it’s invisible to radar,” Lucius explains, “but unfortunately, it also seems to serve as a beacon to certain animals.” Something tells us those “certain animals” might just include bats.

It says a lot about how much of an impact Cameron Monaghan’s performance over the past five years has made that what Gotham fans are most excited to see in the upcoming series finale is not the arrival of Batman but the unveiling of the final evolution of the Joker. Sure, we can’t wait to see David Mazouz finally suit up as the Dark Knight, but most of the chatter in the run-up to the episode is about the role that Monaghan’s Clown Prince of Crime will play in it.

Gotham reaches its season 5 – and therefore series – finale very soon, which means that we’ll see the ensemble cast of characters take their places on the board that line them up with classic Batman mythology. So yes, that means that David Mazouz will get to suit up as the Dark Knight (as well as a stunt performer for the action scenes). Arguably, though, fans are most intrigued to see the final evolution of the Joker, as played by Cameron Monaghan.
