If you appreciated Barbie’s eye-popping zaniness but its virtuous speechifying set your teeth on edge, have I got a sugary treat for you. And by “sugary,” I mean empty calories, not saccharine sentimentality. Gleefully silly — this is, after all, the directing debut of TV’s master of the domain of nothing — Unfrosted takes the origin-story template, wrings it dry of emotion, mixes basic facts with goofy fiction and serves up a bit of toasted history about the search for a “fruit-filled pastry dingus,” the 20th century creation we now know as the Pop-Tart.
Teaming again with his Bee Movie screenwriting collaborators, but this time without the strained punning and belabored narrative mechanics, Jerry Seinfeld has lured a cast of thousands to play characters both real and invented, often a hybrid of the two, in a straight-up comedy — no therapeutic underpinnings or civic lessons — that’s funniest when it isn’t trying too hard.

Baldur’s Gate 3 was a title that set the standard for immersive RPGs for the gaming industry with its release in 2023. Baldur’s Gate 3 has won numerous awards at various ceremonies, including the GotY award. It suffices to say that it did wonders for the RPG genre and its developer, Larian Studios.

Henry Cavill’s The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare has been receiving mixed to positive reviews from critics, but the box office numbers appear very weak for the movie made on a $60 million budget. But fans are not blaming Cavill for having a bit of bad luck in theaters recently for the impending doom of the movie. While Guy Ritchie’s film needs a miracle to recoup its budget, the film couldn’t have made any more bad choices with its release.

Henry Cavill’s role as Nazi-killing commando soldier, Major Gus March-Phillips in The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare required one unique training for his role. While Cavill killed it in the gunfire and action scenes acting like a madman with his tongue out, it was his twirly stylish mustache that needed training. It appears that the mustache was a more difficult job than executing the action scenes.

Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill recently announced his and his partner Natalie Viscuso’s pregnancy. The couple had earlier triggered the pregnancy rumors when Viscuso, the former VP of Legendary Entertainment, was seen showing off her baby bump. Interestingly, Cavill had always dreamed of becoming a good father and shared several of his fatherhood goals. Cavill and Viscuso made their relationship official in 2021.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is an impossibly glib, rip-roaring, and exciting action picture. It’s the type of old-fashioned entertainment full of movie stars who get the job done, cracking-wise, and goddamn, they look good doing it. You can’t help but get swept up in the action and think a franchise is born.
It helps to have a cast with this much swashbuckling beefcake, including a Superman, a Reacher, and a G.I. Joe. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is a film my wife calls the “Five Hot Guys” movie, with lots of eye candy and bloodshed for everyone involved. In a way, it is the perfect date movie.

Since it began in 1984, 40 years ago this year, The Transformers has always had an uncomfortably close relationship with a particularly gross, child-exploiting branch of capitalism — the one that creates cartoon mascots who are driven insane by how delicious sugary cereal is, the one that puts prizes in Happy Meal boxes, and, of course, the one that creates entire TV shows and movies built around selling toys like G.I. Joe or He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Like The Transformers, those shows were all part of an '80s cartoon boom triggered by the way Ronald Reagan’s far-right FCC decided to dramatically roll back protections against advertisements directed at children.

Chris Hemsworth, the voice of a young Optimus Prime, and Brian Tyree Henry, the voice of a young Megatron, got an enthusiastic welcome at CinemaCon as they introduced a first look and 3D scene from “Transformers One,” Paramount’s animated origin story based on the Hasbro toys. “This origin story is how they transformed from brothers in arms to sworn enemies,” said Henry from Las Vegas on Thursday.
In the clip, Optimus Prime, Megatron and their friends “proven worthy” are given their powers to transform — and awkwardly get accustomed to using those powers. They then enter a cargo train and for the first time see the surface of their home planet Cybertron, where the movie is set. The stylized look of the surface is a vast environment of rock-like structures that, like the bots, grow and transform.

Batman: The Animated Series was a truly one-of-a-kind show that received worldwide love and fame. The series writer Henry Gilroy was praised for his writing skills that helped create the 2-D version of Batman into a full-fledged character with depth and intensity.
At that time, the U.S. military was not looking good because of what happened in the Middle East. Wanting to change public opinion, Henry Gilroy helped develop a U.S. military-centric series that went on to become quite a fantastic take on the franchise of G.I. Joe.

The realms of G.I. Joe and Transformers have long captured the imaginations of fans. While both franchises have had crossover in Marvel comics, a full-fledged cinematic meeting has remained a dream.
One of the most famous crossover events was in a comic book series by Marvel (1987) called G.I. Joe and the Transformers, where Autobots end up working with G.I. Joe.

When I was a kid, my mom steered us toward toys that looked like G.I. Joe or Transformers action figures, but weren’t. Their faces were wack, the joints all wrong, such that the limbs didn’t move right, or else they popped out altogether. Sure, these off-brand imitations cost less than the real thing — that made a difference on my meager allowance — but no amount of imagination could turn my busted GoBots into Optimus Prime.
Now, if 10-year-old me could’ve predicted the future (the way Cassie Webb can), he would’ve seen this disappointment as valuable practice for a movie like “Madame Web,” a hollow Sony-made Spider-Man spinoff with none of the charm you expect from even the most basic superhero movie. Some of the movies we talk about have opinions fueled by nostalgia if they are good or reputation if they are bad. Of course, everything is subjective when speaking about how you feel about a movie. It can be tied to events in your life that make you happy or sad. You can enjoy it on the strength of an actor, writer, or director you enjoy being involved or hate it for those exact reasons on a creator not being your favorite. Some things are irrefutable though such as box office or critical appraisal. The late 20th century was a wild time to be a kid immersed in the world of pop culture. It was the period that produced Jessica Rabbit, a cartoon character you felt embarrassed to watch with your parents, and a time when stores regularly stocked movie tie-in toys linked to “kid-friendly” fare like Aliens and Terminator 2.
It seemed like nothing was off the table and that was certainly the case in the world of cartoons. Eager to cash in on the appeal of cinematic properties in a way that would give even the MCU pause for thought, a glut of animated shows inspired by movies featuring torture, nudity, beheadings, and buckets of toxic waste found their way onto the small screen. In most cases, the cartoons spawned rarely stuck around for long, but today they stand as examples of a weird and wonderful chapter in the history of small screen entertainment.

Paramount attempted to revamp the G.I. Joe franchise with Snake Eyes, but the film became a box-office bomb which received mostly negative reviews, and it’s something Andrew Koji saw coming from the beginning.
Andrew Koji played Storm Shadow in Snake Eyes, and while speaking with Inverse (before the SAG-AFTRA strike began), the actor said that he knew the G.I. Joe reboot wasn’t going to be a success. “Hollywood is just obsessed with telling the same old thing over and again,” Koji said. “Firstly, remakes. Secondly, it’s got to be based on IP. Third, it’s so absurd because I’m just like, hold on. People want originality. Where is it? What is going on here? Snake Eyes didn’t do too well, which I knew it wasn’t going to. I think they’re probably going to reboot from the ground up. I’m cool.

In recognition of the release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie this week, we thought we would take a look at the ten highest-grossing movies based on toys that have been made (so far at least). This list was constructed using domestic box office totals that have also been adjusted for inflation (according to data and synopses procured from Box Office Mojo and The Numbers). So, enough yapping, here are the ten highest-grossing films based on toys.

Adjusted Domestic Gross: $25,496,025

9. Mars Attacks! (1996) Original Domestic Gross: $37,771,017

“Sound of Freedom” is being sold as a “conservative” thriller. It’s based on the true story of Tim Ballard, the former Department of Homeland Security special agent who has devoted himself to fighting child sex trafficking, and who took his crusade private when he founded Operation Underground Railroad, with backing from Glenn Beck. The movie stars Jim Caviezel, who in the 19 years since he played the title role of Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” has been a go-to actor for the kind of faith-based projects the vast majority of Hollywood stars steer clear of. Wearing a trim dark beard and coppery blond hair, Caviezel plays Ballard as a beatific G.I. Joe meets George C. Scott in “Hardcore” meets an avenging Jesus.
The movie has a Christian undercurrent that occasionally becomes an overcurrent, as when Ballard explains why he’s fixated on the crime of trafficking: “Because...

Robotic gorillas and ’90s needle drops weren’t the only changes to the “Transformers” franchise introduced in the new prequel “Rise of the Beasts.” The film ends with a surprise appearance from Michael Kelly as a military officer attempting to recruit Anthony Ramos’ Noah to join him in an intergalactic war. The secret agency he works for? G.I. Joe.
The scene has been seen by many as the start of a Hasbro Cinematic Universe that could unite the “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” brands in a larger story. In a new interview with Uproxx, director Steven Caple Jr. explained the decision to cast Kelly in the pivotal role and teased what could be next for the two toy franchises.
“We wanted to make sure whoever we use isn’t like a full-blown Nick Fury,” Caple said. “When you start to do the compare and contrast to the other franchise.

This article contains spoilers for Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
When we first meet Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos), he’s a tech genius struggling to find a job and a purpose. By the end of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, he’s found a purpose by playing an important role in helping the Autobots and Maximals stop the Terrorcons from bringing the planet-destroying Unicron to Earth. But he still doesn’t have a job. That is until he’s approached by a man who knows what Noah has done for the planet and wants to recruit him. The name on the man’s business card? G.I. Joe.
By this point, shared universe teases such as these have become commonplace in blockbuster films, often pointing to larger franchises that nobody really wants (R.I.P. Dark Universe). But the G.I. Joe reveal in the latest Transformers might have a...

Is this the beginning of the Hasbro Cinematic Universe?
After rumors of a crossover between the “Transformers” and “G.I. Joe” franchises circulated online in recent months, it seems like the ultimate ’80s action-toy mash-up is officially happening. The ending of “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” has a direct callout to the Joes, and director Steven Caple Jr. and producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura spoke to Variety at the film’s premiere about what to expect next from the series.
“Rise of the Beasts” is the seventh installment in the talking robots franchise, and di Bonaventura called it “the beginning of a new generation of ‘Transformers’ movies.” It follows 2018’s prequel “Bumblebee,” which took place in 1987, and shifts things to Brooklyn in 1994. In the ‘80s, probably more movies than you realize became animated series. Sure, The Real Ghostbusters and Disney’s spinoff series were prolific, but did you know even Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, Beetlejuice, Bill and Ted, The Karate Kid and Back to the Future had cartoons? Those all make sense as they were family friendly films. But even some R-rated movies spawned kiddie cartoons.

The Robocop live-action films would eventually go PG-13 and include a child character in Robocop 3. But, there’s no mistaking the first two Robocops are not for kids. Still, the idea of a robot police officer could be kid-friendly, if you stripped it of the ultra-violence, profanity, corporate satire and Jesus metaphor.

The theaters are officially back. How do I know? Because I had almost three times as many posters to go through for this month’s write-up than I had any month the past year-plus. We’ve got new releases, postponed releases, streaming releases, multi-platform releases—you name it, July 2021 has it.
I’ll be honest, though. I didn’t think I’d actually find more selections to talk about than the usual nine I’ve been doing of late. The increase is mostly Hollywood fare and studio interference generally means mediocre retreads and collages. The fact that I’m including twelve films below and putting the great “blur” campaign Searchlight assembled for Summer of Soul here in the intro means the art thankfully hasn’t regressed to match an overflowing release calendar. We’re still getting eclectic stuff worthy of a head-turn; hopefully that will never go away.

It kind of goes without saying that Snake Eyes has been one of the most popular G.I. Joe characters for decades now since apart from being a ninja he’s also highly skilled in many other forms of combat that have made him a valuable asset to the Joes. But this time around we get to see how he became the person he’s been for so long, and while it’s easy to think that things are going to change a bit, as Henry Golding’s casting would indicate, it’s still enough to think that we’ll get to see him don the garb

The debut trailer for Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins wants you to know that the upcoming film is on a new level, as its accompanying rap by A$AP Ferg declares. While the final verdict on that bold claim will be decided once the pandemic-delayed film finally drops in July, the franchise aspirations are quite apparent. Henry Golding’s black-clad ninja commando is complemented by signature characters such as Scarlett and Baroness, and a teased focus on the Hasbro toy property’s other popular ninja character, Storm Shadow.
G.I. Joe’s silent, ass-kicking mascot himself, Snake Eyes, as played by Crazy Rich Asians breakout Henry Golding, takes center stage in director Robert Schwentke’s relaunch of the film franchise adapting Hasbro’s 1980s-launched “A Real American Hero” iteration. It was last represented on the big screen by 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (directed by Stephen Sommers) and 2013’s G.

Exclusive: We hear that Paramount has bought the pitch Love In Vain, an unconventional biopic centering around Blues music pioneer Robert Johnson.
Peter Ramsey, after directing the Oscar-and-Golden-Globe winning Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse and Dreamworks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians, will make his live-action feature directorial debut with Love in Vain off Krystin Ver Linden’s screenplay. Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Mike Menchel and multi-Grammy winning and platinum recording artist Lionel Richie are producing. The trio are also producing and in development on the untitled Sammy Davis Jr. biopic.
Johnson’s singing, guitar playing and songwriting skills during the 1930s later influenced a generation of musicians including Bob Dylan, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton and Robert Plant. The Mississippi native had a poorly documented life and death, living a short life until the age of 27. In fact, some record producers such as John Hammond were unaware that Johnson had even died...
