The history of television is fascinating because you can trace lines between almost any modern show and one of the classics, as crews move from one show to another, bringing their past work and their influences with them. This applies to both live-action and animation. In the latter, many animators who start as writers or storyboard artists in one show end up creating their own series years later, bringing colleagues along with them, who then go on to create their own shows in return. Take "Dexter's Laboratory" launching the career of not just Genndy Tartakovsky, but also Craig McCracken, Rob Renzetti, Butch Hartman, and Seth MacFarlane, each going on to make a popular show.
What "Dexter's Laboratory" did in the '90s, "The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack" did in the late 2000s. This is a show that helped launch several animation careers, with plenty of writers and storyboard artists...

It's difficult to encapsulate the impact of Pendelton Ward's animated juggernaut, "Adventure Time." Not only did the show serve as the launchpad for animators like Rebecca Sugar ("Steven Universe") and Julia Pott ("Summer Camp Island"), but it even served as the structural godfather for Donald Glover's "Atlanta." The series centers on a human boy named Finn and his adoptive brother Jake, a magical dog who can change size at will. The duo goes on magical adventures in very distant lands, meeting new friends, foes, and fascinating characters along the way. The nearly 300-episode series took home seven Emmys, launched a multimedia franchise, and got multiple spin-offs. It was a show that felt like it would go on forever ... until after 10 seasons, it came to a satisfying albeit bittersweet end.
As explained by Cartoon Network's chief content office Rob Sorcher in an oral history of "Adventure Time" published by the Los Angeles Times,...

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Animation is in development on a new fantasy-adventure feature from Matt Braly, the creator of Disney’s multiple Emmy-nominated animated series, Amphibia.
Braly comes to the as-yet-untitled project after working for the studio as a storyboard artist on The Mitchells vs the Machines, the Academy Award-nominated feature produced by Lord Miller, which was released on Netflix in 2021.
Drawing on his own cultural background and personal history, the film tells the story of a young boy who goes on an emotional journey to a fantastical world of Thai spirits where he hopes to have his illness cured. Braly will direct from his script written with Rebecca Sugar (Cartoon Network’s Steven Universe).
Chronicling the adventures of the 13-year-old Thai-American Anne Boonchuy (Brenda Song) within a fantasy world full of frogs, toads, and giant insects, Braly’s show Amphibia ran for three seasons on Disney Channel from 2019-2022. A renowned animator,...

It’s been 10 years since Steven Universe unlocked his Gem ability to summon a shield as he savored the last of his beloved, now-discontinued frozen treat Cookie Cat.
What Rebecca Sugar initially introduced as a brightly colored animated series about a 13-year-old half-Gem, half-human boy raised by his three extraterrestrial guardians, soon became so much more. In its five-season run on Cartoon Network, “Steven Universe” navigated such themes as same-sex relationships, genocide, consent, grief and Ptsd — a groundbreaking feat for a series with a target demographic of six to 11-year-old boys.
“Everything was very difficult. At the time, that we were exploring Lgbtqia+ characters and storylines — it was really not something that was possible,” Sugar says. “I really do feel that we got to explore everything we’d hoped to, just maybe not in the exact order originally intended.”
She continues, “It’s just such a time capsule of what...

There is an intricate balance when it comes to animated performances, with animators and voice actors working together to create memorable characters. Remove one of the two elements, and you get a completely different character. Look at Mark Hamill as Joker in "Batman: The Animated Series," Dante Basco as Zuko in "Avatar: The Last Airbender," or Robin Williams as Genie in "Aladdin": These characters work because of the team of animators infusing the characters with life, and because of the unique personality the actors bring to the roles (even if Williams' casting ended up causing a whole lot of problems).
This is to say that fans of "Adventure Time" were disappointed when the spin-off show "Fionna and Cake" released late last month with most of the cast returning to their roles, except one.
Kumail Nanjiani, who voiced a Wish Master named Prismo in "Adventure Time," did not return to voice the character,...

Following Adventure Time‘s conclusion in 2018, some storytelling doors were left wide open. One unexplored idea was the multiverse, which existed in the canon long before the modern era of TV and film had multiverse mania. In the latest At limited series, Fionna and Cake, that long-awaited promise die-hard fans anticipated is finally fulfilled thanks to the canonical gender-swapped characters. And it all happens in a bold new dimension unlike any Adventure Time series to date.
Much of the original show’s audience was around pre-teen to teenage ages. Those fans are now in their 20s, experiencing new adult emotions like depression and dissatisfaction that didn’t spin through their minds as children. That all corresponds directly to Fionna Campbell (Madeleine Martin), a Bridget Jones-esque young woman living in a small studio apartment in a non-magical, metropolitan town where many notable Ooo residents are human like her best friends...

Nearly 25 years into the Golden Age of Television, we are finally ready to create a definitive list of the greatest queer television of all time. Any sooner, and the pickings of series that are both fully embodied in their queerness and top notch artistically would have been a wee bit slim. Luckily for those of us who prefer a fuller bodied canon, slim fit is over. It’s time to celebrate the wonderful wide world of queer television that has exploded over the last nearly quarter of a century.
With so many options to consider, we decided to open this list with a bang: Just the classics. After years of sifting through sweeps-week teases and low-budget soaps, it feels both exhilarating and overwhelming to be able to cull from a wealth of excellent queer programming. This list recognizes the trailblazing classics that paved the way, as well as the boundary-breakers...

Would you pay $30 to see Mulan? Let’s examine what Disney’s newest gamble could mean for the state of movies and theaters going forward.
“But Disney’s decision to release its long-delayed live action remake of Mulan in September for a fee of $29.99 isn’t just a contingency plan necessitated by the pandemic. The price tag represents years of research by film studios into what fans would be willing to pay to see theatrical releases early, at home — something that admittedly sounds a little less enticing when you have been trapped in your living room for the past six months.”

We’re all shaped by the myths we grow up with, whether it’s the stories we learn from holy books or Saturday morning cartoons. Kids who see themselves as the hero learn to center themselves in their own life stories. Kids who see their experiences relegated to the sidelines, or not represented at all, come away with a very different lesson — one that can take years to unlearn.

Warning! This article has spoilers for the entire final season of She-ra And The Princesses Of Power. Turn away if you haven’t seen it already!
When Den of Geek called She-Ra and the Princesses of Power the next step in queer representation back in 2018, just before it premiered, we had no idea how fully the show would live up to that designation. The answer? So much more than we even hoped. The series is helmed by Noelle Stevenson, a queer woman, and has two supporting queer characters (Spinerella and Netossa) that are clearly a couple. This alone was already a win for queer fans, as queer representation in media aimed at children has proven to be minimal to non-existent.
Over the course of the first four seasons of the series, more representation was introduced, including two gay dads for Bow, one of the main characters. It wasn’t as...

The Center for Cultural Power and Jill Soloway’s 5050by2020 have selected the 10 artists for its The Disruptors Fellowship. The fellowship supporting emerging television writers of color who also identify as transgender, non-binary, disabled and those who have been or are currently undocumented. The program looks to shift the status quo in Hollywood by investing directly in artists who have been impacted by systems of oppression and are working towards solutions.
The Disruptors Fellowship was originally planned to be an in-person 14-week program in Los Angeles, but due to the pandemic, it will now be a virtual program.
“This time in our lives more than ever, we need to hear from diverse and inclusive voices, and the timing of the fellowship could not be more fortuitous,” said Favianna Rodriguez, President of The Center for Cultural Power. “We are fortunate that we are able to select from an abundance of talent...

The Covid-19 pandemic has ushered in a new appreciation for streaming platforms while families are “together at home.” Variety recently reported that the streaming competition depends on strong children’s content. Kids have always needed creative, educational and inclusive stories. But during this time of self-isolation, the streamers have become a conduit to the outside and a way to stay connected to a world that is full of diversity. Today’s most innovative storytellers are cultivating children’s stories diverse as real life by amplifying worlds inclusive of all gender identities told by immigrants, the disabled, Lgbtq, Muslims, Latinx, indigenous, black, Asian and all people of color.

The last epic battle of “Steven Universe” isn’t one between friends and foes, but between Steven Universe and himself. After six years and nearly 200 episodes, both the show and character took the time to ask themselves some crucial, existential questions: What happens to a hero after they’ve already saved the day? Who is Steven Universe, and what makes him so special?
Steven’s ensuing spiral into self-doubt, and the gorgeously intuitive way the series guides him out of it, is heady stuff for any show, let alone a kids’ cartoon awash in pastels and uplifting musical breaks. But it’s also a typically ambitious arc for “Steven Universe,” and therefore a fitting one for it to end on — even if watching it wind down with such expert care makes its departure all the more bittersweet.

Steven Universe Future reached an emotional conclusion on Friday as the titular half-human encountered his most devastating enemy yet — himself.
The four-part event, which doubled as the Steven Universe series finale, pit the Crystal Gems against Steven, who took on a monstrous form after becoming corrupted. The Diamonds also joined the fray, though they spent most of their time arguing with Greg over which side of Steven’s family is to blame for the crippling childhood trauma that led to this dire moment.

The climax of “Steven Universe: The Movie” comes not when the hero battles the vengeful, superpowered alien atop the planet-destroying weapon. It arrives a beat later when the titular Steven and his adversary, Spinel, form a delicate friendship while standing in a smoldering crater of their own making. Steven helps Spinal see that although the trauma she’s suffered can’t be erased, personal growth is good and possible.
Their rapprochement follows a slugfest as action-packed as any you’ll find on Cartoon Network.
And creator Rebecca Sugar had to fight like hell for it.
“I would get these notes that he should obliterate her and rid the universe of her evil,” says Sugar. “That’s really not what our show is about. But it’s what is expected from children’s programming — that if there’s a bad person, you kill them, and then everything will be fine.

The saga of Steven Universe is coming to an end and we know exactly when it'll air.
It's been a wild ride with Steven Universe. From first airing in 2013 through today, the franchise has grown and changed in ways no one would have ever expected. It gained a legion of fans and well-deserved critical acclaim. Sadly though, all things must come to an end. The current season, Steven Universe Future, was described by Cartoon Network as a "epilogue limited series" and it's been dealing with the fall out of all the major events that came before. There was of course only so much that could have been done with that and, as announced by the Los Angeles Times, there will only be ten more episodes of the series.
Steven Universe Future Return Date
Steven Universe: Future will come back on March 6th, 2020 with two episodes and "additional episodes debuting every Friday.

The first of the final 10 episodes of the Cartoon Network original animated series will debut March 6 at 7 p.m., the cabler announced Thursday. The run will end March 27 with a four-part series finale.
Though the next batch of episodes is set to mark the end of “Steven Universe,” series creator Rebecca Sugar hinted in a statement that she is not done exploring the world of the show.
“I’m so excited for the final episodes of ‘Steven Universe Future’ to be out in the world, and so grateful to our audience for supporting our show for all these years. It feels like George Orwell's work becomes more and more relevant every day. Check out the best of his quotes from his writing.
"George Orwell, one of the luminaries of the dystopian genre, commented overtly on the dangers of totalitarianism. His influence extends far beyond his prophetic bestseller 1984 and satirical novella Animal Farm; Orwell also published an abundance of essays on politics, literature, and language, arguing zealously through his writing career that unclear language plants the seeds for political manipulation. With the continued increase in mass surveillance, Orwell's fiction seems more prescient than ever. Here are 17 George Orwell quotes from his fiction and nonfiction writing that serve as a chilling reminder of the terrors of totalitarianism."

Steven Universe Future Episodes 1, 2, 3, 4 Review
Steven Universe always finds a way to give you what you never knew you needed. At the end of Steven Universe: The Movie it felt like we had come to a fairly satisfactory ending. Steven realized that all his problems wouldn’t be solved and he’d be ready every day to deal with them. It was a bold and sincere proclamation… but as Steven Universe Future shows? It’s a lot easier to say than to do.
In the past few years Steven has been helping other Gems acclimate to living on Earth. It’s a worthwhile task that he and Amethyst are doing splendid at… but it’s not right for him.

Not many shows would come panting out the gate with explicit, bloody period sex, but “The L Word: Generation Q” isn’t trying to be most shows. A sequel companion to Ilene Chaiken’s groundbreaking lesbian drama “The L Word,” which premiered 15 years ago on Showtime, Marja-Lewis Ryan’s new iteration aims to both honor the original series and push its boundaries beyond where it could, or dared, ever go. Sometimes, that means actually investing more time, energy, and consideration in non-white and trans characters. Other times, it means explicit, bloody period sex. All the time, “Generation Q” (which presumably stands for “queer”) is eager for approval from the Lgbtq+ audience that will watch and judge it circa 2019.
In the decade since “The L Word” first went off the air, Lgbtq+ representation has undergone a massive shift. Everything from prestige dramas to network sitcoms feature teens coming to terms with...

Here we are in the future, indeed. During Steven Universe‘s panel at New York Comic Con on Friday, the Cartoon Network favorite unveiled a brand-new opening sequence for its upcoming sixth season — and things have changed in Beach City.
