With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Closet Monster (Stephen Dunn)
Writer/director Stephen Dunn’s feature debut Closet Monster cares little about convention to tell the story of Oscar Madly (Connor Jessup) growing up with a psychological revulsion to his sexual urges, all thanks to an extremely disturbing event witnessed as a child. This prologue glimpse at his youth (played by Jack Fulton) is a mash-up of tough coming-of-age-dramatics and a dark-edged imaginative whimsy that intrigues to draw you closer.

Welcome back to This Week In Discs! If you see something you like, click on the title to buy it from Amazon. Camp X-Ray Amy Cole (Kristen Stewart) left her small town behind and joined the U.S. Army, but her first assignment isn’t quite the heroic, globe-spanning endeavor she imagined. She’s assigned to a guard position at Guantanamo Bay where she comes face to face with the enemy, but some of the men she sees before her seem far removed from the bloodthirsty Muslim terrorists they’re supposed to be. Cole strikes up a friendship with one man in particular, Ali (Peyman Moaadi), and over the course of a year the two discover the world of grey between them in this supposedly black and white conflict. Writer/director Peter Sattler’s film walks a fine line in allowing its characters to tread both sides of the moral divide without claiming a political stance. Cole...

Since her rapid ascent to fame as The Twilight Saga's leading lady, Kristen Stewart has had something of a rough time when it comes to her professional and public life. It's bad enough having the latter combed over in fine detail, but when your talent is called into question, that must sting all the more.
But here's the thing about Kristen Stewart. She isn't a bad actress in the slightest. In fact, right now she's on the kind of under-the-radar hot streak that suggests she's destined for real career longevity. Twilight, now receding into the cultural distance, was never the finest example of a franchise that fostered great acting work, and Stewart suffered as audiences naturally connected her with sullen on-screen alter-ego Bella Swan.
Over the last 18 months Stewart's big screen work has seen her take on a trio of diverse roles that have smartly distanced her from anything vampire-related.

A lean and mean essay on human bondage, a minimalist examination of living life to the least.Peter Sattler’s directorial debut is as bare and exposed as a prisoner in a cell. A stripped down film about warehousing human beings and waiting for the next step. The next step for the inmate is release, and it may come sooner than the next step for the jailer. In the meantime the guards become the guarded and sometimes the prisoners have more freedom. At least so it seems.Kristen Stewart plays Pfc Amy Cole, a desperate twenty-something who joined the Army to escape the […]...

Camp X-Ray
Written and directed by Peter Sattler
USA, 2014
Director Peter Sattler leads us down the path of purported empathy and compassion in his debut film, Camp X-Ray, only to come up short in depicting the relationship between a female soldier assigned to Guantanamo Bay and a man she befriends who has been imprisoned there for eight years. Though the film is designed as a well-intentioned study of post-9/11 humanism between an unlikely pair, Sattler’s film mostly stays afloat not due to its forced and transparent dramatic structure, but strictly due to its two wonderful lead performances. It doesn’t take long to predict how this sort of film will resolve itself, and sure enough, Camp X-Ray refuses to take the road less traveled, resulting in a calibrated and phony act of tenderness that seems way too workshopped to consider taking serious.

Kristen Stewart has revealed that she is taking a break from acting.
The Twilight actress, whose movie Camp X-Ray is currently touring film festivals, told USA Today she has been working solidly "for two years".
"I'm taking some time off because I've been working for two years," she explained.
"I'm an actor and that's my art form, and because I started that so young, I've always felt intimidated and insufficient when I think about other forms of art I want to create. I'm going to take so much time off.
"I'm going to buy a live-work space in downtown La and I'm going to make some [stuff] with my hands. Literally, I made that decision a few weeks ago.
"I'm making a short film. I'm making a bunch of [stuff]. I don't know how I'll put it out. But I'm not going to hold it so preciously close to me. I write all the time.

Of all the contentious issues that have plagued Barack Obama in his two terms as U.S. President, and there have been many, perhaps none are more simplistic and complicated in equal measure than the question of what to do with the detainee camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. A facility that’s outlived its usefulness but remains politically sensitive for the implications of shutting it down, it still sits on the south-eastern shore of Cuba, with 149 men in custody, 76 of whom will never leave.
Camp X-Ray, the feature film debut of Peter Sattler, doesn’t offer an answer to that burning question, and even though the crux of the film is to unnecessarily remind us that Guantanamo’s detainees are people, too, it must be said that Camp X-Ray without a doubt a very well-acted and compelling reminder.

Kristen Stewart has long been maligned for her seemingly unshakeable performance tics – the hair-playing, the lip-biting, the huffy breathing – and despite being gifted with a compelling character in Peter Sattler’s ambitious Camp X-Ray, Stewart simply can’t kick her bad habits in service to a good performance. Sattler’s debut feature is set at Guantanamo Bay, requiring Stewart to play a young U.S. soldier who finds her worldview forever altered by her experiences, and the actress simply isn’t up to the task, bringing down the quality and power of the entire film in the process. The film opens with a shot of the Twin Towers smoking on 9/11, as seen on television in a foreign country that we only, much later, learn is Germany. Aware of the events and confoundingly kitted out with a bag of cell phones, Ali Amir (Payman Maadi) turns his attention away from the news for afternoon prayer. He...

Perched at the top of this week’s flock of specialty film debuts is Birdman (Or The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance), a possible Oscar contender starring Michael Keaton. Though it’s a limited release, Alejandro González Iñárritu‘s complex film about a fading action-hero trying to reclaim his mojo on Broadway nevertheless combines elements of a superhero franchise that could tap fans well beyond the art house.
It’s part of yet another big flock of specialty film debuts coming this weekend, including the controversy-minded Sundance award-winner Dear White People, William H. Macy‘s directorial debut Rudderless, Kristen Stewart‘s Camp X-Ray, Jason Schwartzman‘s Listen Up Philip, The Golden Era, Summer Of Blood, and one great revival, Alain Resnais’ 1959 landmark Hiroshima Mon Amour.

A new clip from the Kristen Stewart-led “Camp X-Ray” has been unveiled, giving us a closer look at the bond that forms between a U.S. soldier and a Guantanamo Bay detainee. The Sundance drama, which marks the feature directorial debut for Peter Sattler, centers on Private Amy Cole (Stewart), a Guantanamo Bay guard who, despite being at the opposite end of the war, finds herself connecting with one of the detainees, Ali Amir (Peyman Moaadi). “To see somebody comforted by a human relationship, it’s nice, it’s alleviating, it feels good,” Stewart told THR about her role in the film. “You [...]

Kristen Stewart hit the red carpet at the New York Film Festival on Wednesday for the premiere of her new film, Clouds of Sils Maria. She wore a dramatic Chanel dress for the event and showed off her short new haircut while posing for photos with costars Juliette Binoche and Chloë Grace Moretz. Kristen is pulling double duty this week by promoting not one but two projects around the Big Apple. On Monday night, the actress stepped out for the screening of her other upcoming movie, Camp X-Ray, which also brought out her new friend Nicholas Hoult. Kristen also stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that day and revealed that she rescued a dog while filming the gritty prison drama, naming the puppy after her character, Amy Cole. Keep reading to see Kristen at the premiere of Clouds of Sils Maria.

“From the beginning when I started writing it, I knew very much that I wanted to make it a very contained story about two people in one room,” says director Peter Sattler in the latest featurette for prison drama Camp X-Ray. “And not try and make it as this grandiose epic about Guantanamo Bay, and instead focus on the small story between two characters.”
At the centre of Sattler’s close-knit film is Kristen Stewart’s Private Amy Cole. A young Army soldier, she is drafted in as a Guantanamo Bay prison guard and upon arrival, she strikes up a strictly-forbidden friendship with one of the detainees, Ali (Peyman Moaadi.)
There’s certainly a lot going for the film, which boasts a reinvented Stewart. Back from a two-year hiatus, the actress has her sights set on re-establishing herself as a serious thesp with Camp, Oliver Assayas’ Clouds Of Sils Maria,...

One glance at Kristen Stewart’s recent resume and it’s clear the actress is eager to shrug off the shackles of Twilight. A review of her upcoming film slate indicates that sullen-faced teen Bella Swan will soon be nothing but a hazy memory. There’s no better proof of her shift into weightier fare than the latest trailer for Camp X-Ray. Directed by Peter Sattler, Stewart falls in line as Private Amy Cole, a Guantanamo Bay soldier-turned-guard who strikes up an unlikely alliance with detainee, Ali (Peyman Moaadi.)
As the film is set to open in theatres this month, a new trailer has arrived that packs in a little extra footage compared to the first preview. It’s mostly a few scattered lines of dialogue, with some new inserts showing Cole’s lighter side – watching Ali playing football and smooching with a fellow officer. 'Camp X-Ray' Trailer
Camp X-Ray follows Stewart’s character Pvt. Amy Cole as she settles into her assignment at Guantanamo Bay. Before long, she develops a friendship with detainee Ali Amir, played by Peman Moaadi, and finds the ethics more ambiguous and confusing than she’d ever imagined.
“Make no mistake about it; this is a warzone. Some of these guys have been locked up in here for eight years,” a commanding officer tells Stewart. “You will refer to them as detainees. You will not call them prisoners. You can talk to them, but do not let these guys know anything about you.”
Of course, in the trailer, it becomes clear that she lets Ali Amir into her head while she learns about the circumstances that landed him in Guantanamo.

‘Camp X-Ray’ trailer 2014: Kristen Stewart and Payman Maadi in Guantanamo’s ‘war zone’ (photo: Kristen Stewart in ‘Camp X-Ray’) The official Camp X-Ray trailer is out. "Make no mistake about it. This is a war zone," a male voice tells the recruits (and us) at the start of the movie trailer, set in Guantanamo’s temporary detention center Camp X-Ray. A "war zone" in more ways than one; he’s referring not only to the physical danger faced by the U.S. military guards (and their Muslim prisoners — or rather, "detainees"), but also, and more ominously, to a war of minds and mindsets between the two groups, who may have more in common with each other than is apparent on the surface. Private Amy Cole aka Kristen Stewart is forewarned: "You can talk to ‘em, but do not let these guys learn anything about you. Do not let them get inside your head.

One of the first things Private Amy Cole (Kristen Stewart) is told when she starts at Guantanamo Bay is, "You can talk to 'em, but do not let these guys know anything about you. Do not let them get inside your head." Then she meets Ali (Payman Maadi), one of the prisoners she's in charge of, and she realizes things aren't so black and white at "Camp X-Ray."
Stewart has done her best to shed her "Twilight" past, with racy roles in movies like "The Runaways" and "On the Road." Judging by this trailer for "Camp X-Ray," which was written and directed by Peter Sattler, she's not giving up any time soon. It's a busy year for the young star; she also shares the screen with Juliette Binoche and Chloë Grace Moretz in Olivier Assayas's "Clouds of Sils Maria," which currently does not have a release date.

Kristen Stewart continues her attempts to shrug her mainstream Twilight fame with Camp X-Ray, a film in which she likely assumed she would be able to prove herself as a serious actor. However, while Stewart’s performance isn’t exactly Oscar-worthy, it’s the film itself that lets her down in the end. Despite her best efforts and the talents of A Separation’s Peyman Moaadi, this character-driven effort is one of the noteworthy disappointments of Sundance 2014.

Kristen Stewart's Us soldier falls in love with a wild-eyed detainee behind the razor wire of Guantanamo Bay. Now what could possibly go wrong?
Camp X-Ray, the debut feature from writer-director Peter Sattler, is a platonic Romeo and Juliet tale in which the characters converse at length across the great divide, separated by wire-mesh glass or chain-link fence. I saw three films today, but the one that I can’t seem to get out of my mind is Peter Sattler’s directorial debut feature Camp X-Ray, starring Kristen Stewart, Payman Maadi, and Lane Garrison. Stewart stars as Amy Cole, a military guard on her first assignment at Guantanamo Bay, who forms a bond with a detainee named Ali, played by Maadi. Theirs isn’t exactly a friendship, but over time as Cole witnesses the treatment of the detainees, she can’t help but show compassion toward him.
Sattler stated that he wanted to make a film about humanity, not politics. I think he succeeded.

The Rural Alberta Advantage, a three-piece indie rock band based out of Toronto, stopped by the IFC Crossroads House during SXSW 2011. The group joined us for a set of their sparse and almost chillingly beautiful songs from their album "Departing."
Band members Nils Edenloff, Amy Cole, and Paul Banwatt chatted with IFC's SXSW music host, Ted Leo, about the industry, their sound, and the wilds of Canada:
After their interview, the band headed to the main stage at the Crossroads House and brought a little bit of the lonesome Canadian wilds into the middle of Austin, Texas:

Fort McMurray is located in a remote part of Alberta, Canada, and a five hour drive north of Edmonton. The city of about 70,000 people sprang up around a single industry. “If it wasn’t for the oil, there’d be nobody there,” says musician Nils Edenloff, who grew up there with sprawling evergreen forests and 40-below winters. In his own small way, Edenloff has recently given Fort McMurray a new identity: muse.
