Sometimes, a movie couple has so much chemistry you wonder if they have worked together before.
Eva Bourne and Rushi Kota exhibited a natural connection in Make Me A Match, even though only Eva Bourne was a seasoned Hallmark professional. Rushi Kota made his Hallmark debut and his rom-com debut in this film
Did their sarcastic chemistry work? Could you tell they were made for each other instantly, or did you think they'd be butting heads constantly?
In the movie, Bourne plays Vivi, who works at Data Mate, a dating app company, and learned her fiance cheated on her because he was tired of living up to being perfect.
Initially, Vivi was jaded about love and believed in chasing after it, and if she changed the formula of her app, she'd find love.
Cute Stranger: What did you wish for? You owe me after that lump on the head.

Rushi Kota fulfilled a dream with his starring role in the new Hallmark Channel movie Make Me a Match, part of the network’s “June Weddings” lineup.
“I always wanted to do a rom-com,” the Never Have I Ever and Grey’s Anatomy actor said in an interview with Showbiz Cheat Sheet. So, when he got the chance to play Boom, the son of a traditional Indian matchmaker who falls for a woman named Vivi (Eva Bourne), he couldn’t say no.
Vivi works for a company behind a data-driven matchmaking app. When her formula for finding love turns out to be a bust, she turns to Boom’s mom Raina (Rekha Sharma) to see what she can learn from a different approach. In the process, she and Boom discover they have an unexpected connection.

Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010)

Written by Panos Cosmatos
Cast: Eva Bourne (Elena), Michael Rogers (Barry Nyle), Scott Hylands (Dr. Mercurio Arboria), Rondel Reynoldson (Margo), Marilyn Norry (Rosemary Nyle), Sara Stockstad (Anna Arboria)
“Beyond the Black Rainbow” is definitely the most unique film that I’ve seen lately. I’m stealing my own thunder early on, but just that statement alone merits a recommendation. If anyone is into really iconoclastic filmmaking where symbolisms abound against a backdrop of some sophisticated imagery, this is their film. Or if anyone is just into a pretty freaky deaky movie, this is also their film.
Director and writer Panos Cosmatos has fashioned something pretty unique here. Unable to be labeled into any particular genre, and guaranteed to be sought out and re-watched either in the near future to get a firmer grasp on what’s going on,...

We want to help audiences decide what to see (if they can’t see everything!), so in the days to come check this space for previews of the films in the festival.
Beyond The Black Rainbow is a surreal sci-fi thriller from Vancouver director Panos Cosmatos. It’s a film that is more about delivering sensation and imagery than narrative, although there is plenty of that to reward the astute viewer. Btbr tells the story of Elena (Eva Allan), a young resident/captive of a retro-futuristic hippie commune committed to better living through mind-altering chemistry. Supervised by the seriously creepy Dr. Barry Niles (Michael Rogers) and living in a semi-lucid state, she eventually attempts to escape and discover the world beyond the walls of the sterile, menacing Arboria Institute.
This movie is a serious trip. Set in this strange alternate 1983 and featuring an incredible, pulsing, throbbing soundtrack that perfectly suits the psychedelic environment,...

*full disclosure: a Blu-Ray screener of this film was provided by Magnolia Home Ent. Director/writer: Panos Cosmatos. Cast: Michael Rogers, Eva Allan, Scott Hylands, Marilyn Norry and Rondel Reynoldson. It is often best to label a film experimental when it does not follow certain film patterns. Director Panos Cosmatos, son of George Cosmatos (Tombstone), seems almost uninterested in plot. Instead, Beyond the Black Rainbow focuses more on visual style and tone while trying to provide an interesting experience for viewers. This style will not be appreciated by the majority, but this hallucinogenic thriller held this watcher's attention all the way through. Cinematographer Norm Li's approach to the film harkens back to '70s sci-fi. This era saw the rise of science fiction and many of Norm Li's sets, costumes and backgrounds allude to or pay homage to this time period. The setting for the film is 1983 and the set pieces,...

Beyond the Black Rainbow, written and directed by Panos Cosmatos, is a Reagan-era fever dream inspired by hazy childhood memories of midnight movies and Saturday morning cartoons. Beyond The Black Rainbow is a feast for the ears and the eyes. It is a science-fiction film that wears its inspirations on its sleeve, but at the same time it is quite unlike anything that you’ve likely seen before. The fact that this is a first-time feature from director Panos Cosmatos is nothing short of stunning. Veteran directors do not often create films with such a self-assured sense of style and control. Of course, it can be argued that a lot of directors eschew those trappings in order to appeal to the most broad audience possible, the lowest common denominator, if you will. Cosmatos doesn’t have that kind of aspiration. His is a singular vision. It may not be everyone’s fancy, but for those of you who enjoy challenging cinema, Beyond The Black Rainbow is full of rewards.

This is a story about control: Cosmatos’ Throwback a Challenging Piece of Psychedilia
Words cannot rightfully describe Beyond the Black Rainbow, the debut of filmmaker Panos Cosmatos (the son of George Cosmatos of Rambo: First Blood Part II and Tombstone fame), a film that’s obviously imbued and informed by several notable filmmakers yet never actually pays homage to any particular film. Rather, Cosmatos has created a nightmarish world that’s aggravating, hypnotic, and original. While he may not surpass David Lynch in the epitome of the art house mindfuck, he comes close with a film that’s more than a feeling—it’s a state of mind.
Crimson numerals inform us that it’s 1983 and infomercial footage of Mercurio Arboria (Scott Hylands) explains what his Arborian Institute has to offer, namely “a state of mind, a way of being,” with the methods he has developed to create a “happier you” with “serenity through technology.

If you wanted me to count off the most memorable theatrical experiences I had throughout 2011, the Tribeca premiere of Beyond the Black Rainbow would be right near the top. But trying to sum up the debut feature from writer and director Panos Cosmatos in a few sentences is a fool’s errand, so take my personal description for what it may be worth: Imagine if, in the year 1983, a sci-fi-loving electronic music enthusiast took a hallucinogenic drug and fell asleep. Beyond the Black Rainbow would either be his ultimate dream or his worst nightmare.
I’ve been telling people about the film for almost eleven months — it was even a 2011 honorable mention — and, now, they can finally get some idea by watching this terrific new trailer from Apple. Here, we get some of Cosmatos‘ chilling compositions, a brief display of the great cinematography, and a little ambient soundtrack — but it...

What can I say about Beyond the Black Rainbow that hasn’t already been said about licking toads while watching a 70s slasher flick behind your neighborhood scientific research compound? Writer/director Panos Cosmatos‘s deranged trip down the rabbit hole feels like Cronenberg and Argento furiously impregnated a robot named Tarkovsky. It’s homage at its highest form – work born directly from the visual and storytelling tropes of iconic artists that manages to feel brand new with the presence of a fresh personality. In the 80s-set film, and stop me if you’ve heard this one, Elena (Eva Allan) is held captive in a research facility by Barry Nyle (Michael Rogers), the demented product of a cult-like program born two decades earlier that sought to merge science and religion. As he slowly deteriorates mentally, blood starts spilling, but even if Elena gets a chance to escape, she’ll have him murderously on her trail. The...

Let's start the weekly round-up with Grimm.
Grimm's ratings dropped a little this week, but the show still won the 18-49 demo in its timeslot, finishing ahead of CSI: NY, Fringe and Supernatural, and rising by a full frakking ratings point (1.8) after Chuck (0.8). Wake up, Chuck.
Hitfix visited the set in Portland recently and posted a lengthy report. Here is a snippet:
Sasha Roiz on how his character will develop later in the series: "I’m not a Grimm descendent, but I'm a descendent of a long line that dates back just as Grimm does and we have a bit of a history and a past, so my line is a royal line and that will slowly unfold throughout the series."Collider has a longer interview with Sasha and Reggie Lee (more at the link):
It’s nice to see your character – like the main character – has the duality.

Beyond the Black Rainbow
Directed by Panos Cosmatos
Canada, 2010
If any of the many 1980s-synth-homage bands out there right now need a music video they should call Panos Cosmatos immediately. His Beyond the Black Rainbow, while failing to serve much feature-length cinematic purpose, is the perfect vehicle for a 3 ½ minute, leather-clad, red-saturated, Knight Rider-esque, video accompaniment.
Unfortunately, Beyond the Black Rainbow runs 110 minutes (making it, by my count, about 106.5 minutes too long). The plot, which mixes a bit of horror and science fiction references including Cronenberg, Argento, Kubrick, and Lucas, into its plodding pace, is certainly secondary to director Cosmatos’ visuals. A mad scientist Barry (Michael Rogers) keeps a young, mysterious girl Elena (Eva Allen) locked in an equally mysterious, sterile labyrinth. Barry’s got some issues. He’s also got a dark past, personified by his former mentor Mercurio (Scott Hylands), whom he now injects with drugs on a regular basis.

The number of films that can be legitimately classified as an experience are few. More than merely a movie, those that do surface from the traditional fray are usually unforgettable. Beyond The Black Rainbow is one of these experiences, having embedded itself deeply in my mind. One of the reasons I chose to wait a few days before writing this review is that the film is continues to be absorbed into my memory. This is a film that does require some time to digest. To fully appreciate the film, patience and an open mind are required. Suggesting the film needs time to be fully understood, however, is a flawed approach to its viewing, which is at least partially a subjective endeavor.

With his ambitious first feature, writer-director Panos Cosmatos emerges as a bold new visionary in science-fiction filmmaking. Beautifully shot and meticulously designed, Beyond The Black Rainbow takes place in an alternate 1986, where a secretive scientific operation called the Arboria Initiative is experimenting with mind-altering drugs in an attempt to explore the limitless possibilities of the human psyche. Their leading researcher, Barry Nyle (Michael Rogers) oversees the treatment of a female patient, Alena (Eva Allen), who is kept imprisoned within a featureless cell devoid of access to the outside world. Does she possess telekinetic powers? Is she a creation or by-product of the institute's research, or does Alena represent the next step in our psychological evolution?Cosmatos offers little in the way of explanation or exposition...

Canada, 2011
There’s been a welcome rush of audacious first features recently – Evan Glodell’s incendiary Bellflower and Daniel Cockburn’s witty, touching thought experiment You Are Here spring to mind, and now so does Bruno Cosmatos’s gloriously odd Beyond the Black Rainbow, a low-budget sci-fi wonder that, like those other debuts, synthesizes a set of influences in order to present a cinematic vision that is startling in its confidence. It’s not as easy to love as those films, and its extreme aestheticism will alienate many (or even most) viewers, but that it is beautifully realized is impossible to deny.
Thanks to Rainbow‘s hallucinogenic nature, plot synopses should be taken with a grain of salt. After an opening infomercial establishes the sinister new-age tone, an intertitle informs us of the year (1983) and then we’re...

I don’t think any other news story that’s emerged today made me smile quite like this next one did. ScreenDaily has learned that Magnet Releasing has picked up Panos Cosmatos‘ debut, Beyond the Black Rainbow, with domestic distribution planned for later this year.
Starring Michael Rogers, Eva Allan, Scott Hylands and Marilyn Norry, Black Rainbow is a film that some of us were lucky enough to see at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, and it’s one that I don’t think any of us have forgotten since. A sci-fi period piece that also acts as something of a horror film, it’s a visually stunning, mentally perplexing little movie, and is pretty much destined to have a cult following.
Nothing appears to have been revealed about when it’ll be hitting theaters, except that a theatrical release will be happening this year. While you could see...

You can't say we didn't warn you there'd be some more distribution news coming out of the Cannes Film Festival. The latest tidbit is that Magnet Releasing (the genre arm of Magnolia Pictures) has picked up Us rights and Mongrel Media has acquired Canada from Xyz Pictures to Panos Cosmatos’ sci-fi thriller Beyond the Black Rainbow.
Per Screen Daily the film, which premiered at the Tribeca film fest last month, will get theatrical releases in both markets.
Synopsis:
Beyond the Black Rainbow, written and directed by Panos Cosmatos, is a Reagan-era fever dream inspired by hazy childhood memories of midnight movies and Saturday morning cartoons. Cosmatos brings a bold, Kubrickian vision to the screen in stunning detail in this sci-fi fable of a young woman imprisoned in an experimental laboratory and the enigmatic scientist who is her captor. Set in a futuristic 1983, Elena finds herself held against her will in...

Ooooo.... So many opinions. Marina loved it. Twitch loved it. Our commenters hate it. Your mother doesn't get it. As far as I'm nominally concerned, this film is entirely and without a doubt rooted in the suspended psychic animation of no soap...radio. Get it?
Set in a 1980s-ish world you never knew (though could have, had you hung around any number of cults bent on futurism), writer-director Panos Cosmatos's Beyond The Black Rainbow follows a young woman, Elena (Eva Allan), imprisoned, drugged, and made virtually immobile by her male-mental scientist captor, Barry (Michael Rogers), who employs extreme mental dismemberment tactics on the one girl set to be the crown of humanity. When we meet her, however, she is barely the crown of catatonia.
The first, second, and third acts smash...

Equal parts sci-fi as it is experimental film, Beyond the Black Rainbow is an odd trip down movie memory lane, taking you back to the drug fueled cinema of the 1970s that might leave you a bit hazy. The debut film from Panos Cosmatos takes place in an futuristic alternate reality 1983, crafting a unique atmosphere of paranoia, psychological experiments and meta-psychical powers. Clearly influenced by a myriad of films from the golden era of bizarre sci-fi, part of the enjoyment in experiencing BtBR is reveling in its influences. From 2001, Solaris, Scanners, Thx-1138, Tron and a slew more of old school films, Cosmatos is obviously a fan of vintage dystopia and successfully mutates somewhat stale sci-fi tropes into a surreal mind bending adventure.
Trying to decipher the story is only half of the challenge with BtBR, as Cosmatos is careful not to overly rely on the simplicity of his plot. Instead...

Hypnotic insanity of the finest order, Panos Cosmatos' Beyond the Black Rainbow is one of the true highlights of this year's Tribeca Film Festival. Playing in the genre-centric Cinemania program, Cosmatos' debut is a nightmarish acid trip with myriad cinematic influences—Stanley Kubrick, David Cronenberg, Dario Argento, John Carpenter and Ken Russell are merely a few of its most prominent spiritual ancestors—and yet one that melds and warps its many '70s and '80s sci-fi and fantasy elements into something distinctively unsettling. With a malevolence amplified by the obliqueness of both its form and content, the 1983-set story concerns a doctor, inhumanely creepy Barry Nyle (Michael Rogers), and his patient/captive Elena (Eva Allan), who may be a psychic, and whom he treats in a facility which an intro VHS recording indicates is concerned with achieving pure happiness through therapy and pharmaceuticals.
That somewhat basic description,...
