The first thing that is likely to catch your eye about The Company You Keep, the latest directorial effort from Robert Redford, is the vast amount of star power it contains. I can’t recall having seen so impressive a cast for at least the last several years. Take a look at this list: Robert Redford, Susan Sarandon, Stanley Tucci, Richard Jenkins, Terrence Howard, Julie Christie, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Brendan Gleeson, Anna Kendrick, and Sam Elliott. These names, most of whom have won or have been nominated for an Academy Award, would be enough to convince most people to give the film a shot, but then again, more details on the film couldn’t hurt.
The plot revolves around a group of ex-radicals known as the “Weather Underground.” A few decades ago, they staged numerous protests and even committed a number of violent acts, including a bank robbery. Years later,...

★★☆☆☆ With a stellar cast consisting of an incredible nine Academy Award-nominated performers, it's safe to say that the expectations for Robert Redford's The Company You Keep (2012) are suitably high. However, such anticipation results in severe disappointment as we're treated to a tedious, American equivalent of Last of the Summer Wine. Redford directs and also stars as Jim Grant, a small-town lawyer and single father who becomes embroiled in local journalist Ben Shepard's (Shia Labeouf) investigation into the terrorists of an activist group, following the arrest of former member Sharon Solarz (Susan Sarandon).
It soon transpires that Redford's Grant is actually long-term FBI fugitive Nick Sloan, and due to Shepard discovering his true identity, the former activist will have to give up his comfortable home life with his daughter and go on the run once again. What is intriguing about The Company You Keep is how the viewer is...

Robert Redford's newest film The Company You Keep is a charmingly small movie with a larger-than-life cast. It tells the story of members of the Weather Underground, a radical political group from the late Sixties who were well known for both their opposition to the Vietnam War and the use of violence to deliver their message. The Company You Keep deals primarily with the aftermath of this violence.
During this group's heyday, some of the members decided to rob a bank. During the robbery, a security guard is killed and many members of the group are forced to go underground. After four decades underground, the first crack in their wall of secrecy breaks when Sharon Solarz (Susan Sarandon), one of the bank robbers, is captured at a gas station near Albany, New York. Soon after, the news of Sharon's arrest reaches the desk of Ben Shepard (Shia Labeouf), a...

A former member of the revolutionary militant group the Weather Underground goes on the run after a journalist outs him in The Company You Keep, a political thriller directed by Robert Redford and based on Neil Gordon’s novel. It’s a film that touches on the costs of political commitment, specifically the fervent activism of young college kids in the ’60s who, swept up in the revolutionary moment, took actions that they pay for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately, it’s not as thought-provoking, or as political, as it sounds. Since Redford doesn’t have the guts to either condemn or applaud the Weather Underground radicals, The Company You Keep basically boils down to one long, boring chase. There’s a subject here for a good movie, perhaps even a great one, but this isn’t it.

Chicago – The golden age of the great Robert Redford occurred in the 1970s, when he participated in making passionate political statements with “All the President’s Men,” “The Candidate” and “Three Days of the Condor.” Redford stars in and directs a throwback to those times, the equally passionate yet softer-in-narrative “The Company You Keep.”
Rating: 3.5/5.0
It’s a reminder of 1960s radicalism, the evolution of life and how priorities can muddy up youthful indiscretions. It unfortunately creates a somewhat melodramatic and difficult to believe chase thriller along the way, but there is also that passion, the underlying need by communicators like Redford to make films that matter, about subjects that should give pause in the current U.S. political landscape. This film is worth seeing, if only to honor and remember the boomer generation that stopped an unjust war, and then was destined like all of us to see their...

Shia Labeouf has already quite effectively shrugged off his adolescent persona as a Disney kid (admittedly, though, he was always a bit of a weird one, he certainly wasn’t going to ever star in his own version of High School Musical) with a series of big blockbusters and big public bust-ups, but the actor still seems to be searching for an appropriate niche to serve his undeniable (though sometimes overshadowed) talents. Fortunately for everyone involved, Labeouf hits his stride in Robert Redford’s The Company You Keep, a smart and serious slice of hard-boiled drama that’s long been absent from the local multiplex. Labeouf stars as Ben Shepard, a go-getter cub reporter in upstate New York who stumbles upon the biggest story of his young career, one that unexpectedly pops up practically in his own backyard. When Sharon Solarz (Susan Sarandon) is captured by the FBI at a random gas station in New York state...

New York – Shia Labeouf's character in "The Company You Keep," Ben Shepard, may be a reporter, but he's not the same as Robert Redford's Bob Woodward in "All The President's Men." The two films take place nearly 40 years apart and the world—and reporting on it—has changed over that time, so one shouldn't be surprised that the characters are different. The comparisons, however, are inevitable as Redford directs Labeouf in "Company." The younger actor understands exactly why such comparisons would be made. In discussing Redford's Woodward, he told us that Redford's portrayal in "President's Men" is the "preeminent performance" of...

Los Angeles — Robert Redford does his most compelling work in some time as both actor and director in "The Company You Keep," a tense yet admirably restrained thriller about a fugitive forced out of hiding after 30 years to prove his innocence. Adapted with clarity and intelligence by Lem Dobbs from Neil Gordon's novel, and lent distinguishing heft by its roster of screen veterans, this gripping drama provides an absorbing reflection on the courage and cost of dissent.
Recalling aspects of Sidney Lumet's poignant "Running on Empty" from 1988, but with a more subdued emotional palette, the film opens with vintage-style news footage detailing charges against members of radical antiwar group the Weather Underground in the early 1970s for plotting to blow up buildings in multiple U.S. cities. A second report follows, attributing responsibility to the same group for a Michigan bank robbery during which a security guard was killed.

The thing I love about Robert Redford movies is how insightful and opinionated they are, never existing as just a bland surface experience. I’m not only talking about his directorial efforts with that statement either, I’m talking about anything the man is really involved in. Sure, there are some duds which are blemishes on his illustrious career, but no actor can avoid that, and most other projects he’s worked on are rich with subtext and provide insight on their topics.
The Company You Keep is no different from the better work he’s participated in, offering a thought-provoking take not only on the storied history of The Weather Underground, but the hard-hitting and morally ambiguous world of journalism – which of course sparked my interest.

Return for Redford as Actor/Director in Heated Political Thriller
Robert Redford, the actor, has been a staple of American pop culture for half a century, his golden smile and wet eyes long ago solidified as iconic. As a director his work has been more sparse with years passing between projects. His newest, The Company You Keep, has him returning to the dual role of director/star alongside a nearly endless stream of world class actors (Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon, Chris Cooper, Brendan Gleeson, Terence Howard…). The film follows Redford as a fugitive on the run after his cover is blown by a pesky small town journalist, Shia Labeouf. Though it can at times overplay its political leanings, The Company maintains a steady pace and engages.
As Ben Shepard, Labeouf brings a sincerity, a depth and roundness to a character – the youthfully determined journalist – all too often played with one-dimensionality.

Hitting April 5th, The Company You Keep has a cast that could make three films jealous, and yet, it may make some raise their eyebrows at Robert Redford… because Shia LeBeouf is in such a major role, surrounded by all the other names.
I’m not saying he isn’t up to the task (though I’m not saying he is), but with the list involved here, a lot of people are going to wonder about the decision. That’s just the movie world, like it or not. Given the serious venture we’re involved in with this complex plot, you just have to know that people are going to see Susan Sarandon, Chris Cooper, Julie Christie, Sam Elliot, and more, and they’re just going to have to do a double-take when we answer the, “So, who is in the big role as the reporter?”

Certain films strive for real importance, fueling debates about important political and social issues, unafraid to take a controversial or unpopular stance. Robert Redford certainly thinks that his new film, The Company You Keep, is one such picture. He couldn’t be further off the mark. The Company You Keep is a staggeringly dull effort with such a flawed concept, idiotic writing and poor construction that if anyone other than Redford had tried to make it, they would’ve been laughed out of the studio.
We’ll start at the beginning. Sharon Solarz (Susan Sarandon), an aging mother, is arrested at a gas station near Albany, New York, for her role in a series as a domestic terrorist with the radical Weather Underground group forty years earlier. Ben Shepard (Shia “I Only Do Serious Movies Now” Labeouf), a local reporter with a bad haircut, digs further...

The Company You Keep is an average thriller. It's not entirely exhilarating, but passes the time despite being a little too long at just over two hours. However, forget the thriller aspect for a second, the weirdest bit is the journalism side of the story and its clear hatred for new media. To be fair, I share director Robert Redford's disgust for the hit baiting slam pieces that come from today's media more focused on clicks than integrity and proper sourcing. But, as we watch a young journalist do everything he can to check his sources and get the story straight, the way the narrative plays out it all begins to feel extraordinarily contradictory. Written by Lem Dobbs (The Limey, Dark City), The Company You Keep is an adaptation of Neil Gordon's novel centering on a young journalist's exploration into the identity of a former member of the Weather Underground.

Robert Redford is standing on the precipice between yesterday and tomorrow, and The Company You Keep is the filmmaker’s bridge between the two worlds. Invoking the political passion of The Way We Were, and his journalistic fervor of All the President’s Men, Redford uses an old-school framework to produce an absorbing thriller that could only exist in this particular time and place between the paper, analog past and the digital media future. And it’s his best film in years. Memories and modernity continually swirl around the story of a young journalist and the old fugitive he rips out of hiding. Shia Labeouf is Ben Shepard, an intrepid reporter struggling at his local paper when a career-making story breaks. After a 30-year hunt, the FBI has finally captured one...

As a director, Robert Redford has repeatedly been drawn to narratives that if not recounting real events, are often inspired by them. As follow-up to his historical drama The Conspirator, which focused on the vengeful aftermath of Lincoln's assassination, Redford offers an adaptation of the Neil Gordon novel The Company You Keep, which uses the 1960s far-left radical group the Weather Underground as the base for a provocative thriller. Set in contemporary America, Shia Labeouf heads a star-studded cast playing Ben Shepard, a journalist who desperately needs a scoop to keep his job. When news breaks that a member of the Weather Underground (Susan Sarandon) who has long been wanted in connection with a bank robbery and murder has been arrested, interest in the group and its lone unaccounted for member is renewed. Chasing the story of what ever happened to fugitive Nicholas Sloan, Shepard pulls strings with an ex...

Occupy Wall Street descended upon Broadway Friday night, commencing a daylong occupation of Times Square. The move to New York's theater district is meant to be a show of creative resistance, with a series of street performances and speeches that symbolize the people "taking back the stage" -- in other words, the public spaces that belong to them.
Occupy Broadway's statement lays out their objective:
Occupy Broadway is a symbolic attempt to regain the space of theatre as an accessible, popular art form, bringing it back to where it all started - in a public space, for the common citizen. We are using public space to create a more colorful image of what our streets could look like, with public performances, art, and music. Through this movement, New York re-imagines itself as a work of art, rather than a retail shopping mall.
Friday night's agenda began at 6 p.m., with...

Ever heard the term morning glory? Me too. Know what it means? Me too. But we’ll put that aside for a second because the newly released trailer for director Roger Michell’s Morning Glory has arrived online and it’s possibly the most watchable thing I’ve seen all day. If, like me, you’re tired of those chipper morning shows that pump out celebrity gossip and fluffy human interest stories faster than an issue of Sugar, then this should be right up your street.
Starring Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford, Diane Keaton, Patrick Wilson and Jeff Goldblum, Morning Glory is the story of a young, aspiring producer and her experiences taking working on Daybreak, a tired breakfast show that’s very quickly sliding down the ratings. After taking on board the fantastically stony and cynical Mike Pomeroy (Ford), her job becomes ten times harder. Pomeroy is far from a...

The timing couldn’t have been better for Patsy, who will leave BBC’s Holby City later this year. She is hoping that a role on the show will help her take her mind off her recent split from husband DJ Jeremy Healy.
