Jeff Burr, the horror specialist who directed Vincent Price in one of his last movies and entries in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Puppet Master, Pumpkinhead and Stepfather franchises, has died. He was 60.
Burr died Tuesday in his sleep in Dalton, Georgia, of apparent complications from a stroke, his longtime friend, actor Eric Spudic, told The Hollywood Reporter.
After several other directors had dropped out, Burr came aboard at the last minute to helm New Line’s Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990), this installment starring former pro wrestler R.A. Mihailoff as the villain.
He said it took 11 tries before the MPAA would sign off on an ‘R’ rating for the film, which grossed $5.8 million on a $2 million budget.
Burr went on to direct Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings (1993) and Puppet Master 4 (1993), Puppet Master 5 (1994) and Puppet Master: Blitzkrieg Massacre (2018).
Outside of the horror realm, he helmed Eddie Presley (1992), a film about an Elvis...

The Nun II is an gothic supernatural horror film directed by Michael Chaves and released in 2023. The screenplay is written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and Akela Cooper, based on a story by Cooper. This movie serves as a sequel to the 2018 film, The Nun, and is the eighth installment in The Conjuring Universe franchise. The cast includes Taissa Farmiga, Jonas Bloquet, and Bonnie Aarons, who reprise their roles from the first film, along with Storm Reid and Anna Popplewell joining the cast.
As a good sequel, “The Nun II” once again focuses on the elements that made the first one successful: lots of scares and a gothic atmosphere (they say now) with a photography style that emphasizes light and shadow.
Caravaggio’s tenebrism seems to still have its followers, as similar themes are combined, although this time with fewer distorted angles and more scares.

Editor’s Note: This review originally published during the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Vertical Entertainment will release “Jeanne du Barry” on Friday, May 3.
Zeroing in on a glamorous notable from this or that royal court, and using them a kind of mannequin over which to drape lofty themes and embellishments, “Jeanne du Barry” is a perfectly serviceable entry in a genre born of the stage and perfected by Old Hollywood: the star showcase. That the icon in the spotlight is writer-director-lead actor Maïwenn, and not her American co-star Johnny Depp, should come as a relief to some, a crushing disappointment to others, and surprise to absolutely no one. Just look at the film’s title.
Or, look to the auteur behind this year’s Cannes Film Festival opener. For those whose familiarity with the diva ends at the blue makeup she wore in Luc Besson’s “The Fifth Element,” the French...

The Los Angeles native got her start assisting veteran stylist Jeanne Yang, with whom she continues to work on looks for Simu Liu and Kumail Nanjiani. “Jeanne has taught me to be confident in my decisions and trust my instincts,” Takayanagi says of her mentor. For awards season, she went out on her own, dressing Everything Everywhere All at Once Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan: “His style is classic and tailored but with a little twist of quirkiness,” says Takayanagi, who especially loved Quan’s red velvet Armani at the Critics Choice Awards. “It was the perfect style to bring a bit of Chinese culture in while keeping it elegant.” As for Quan’s signature lapel pins, she says it started with a DIY googly-eye pin on his Thom Browne tux at the Golden Globes and gained momentum from there: “It was a way to nod to...
