Welcome to “TV Take,” Variety’s television podcast. In this week’s episode, Variety’s executive editor of TV, Daniel Holloway, talks with Kal Penn, the host of the documentary series “This Giant Beast That is the Global Economy,” which is currently available to stream on Amazon.
The series sees Penn travel around the world, meeting key players behind some of the most damaging and absurd movements in today’s economy.
Among the eclectic selection of people Penn sits down to interview are a money launderer for a cocaine cartel, the head of a gigantic rubber company, and a group of barnacle fishermen off the coast of Northern Spain. Penn says hosting a show with such scale required him to tread a fine balance between bringing his own “giant man-child” sense of humor, while also respecting the significance of the stories being told.

Elissa Karasik’s Snapchat drama “Frat Boy Genius,” and scripts about Matt Drudge and the father of the Williams sisters are at the top of the 2018 version of the Black List.
“Frat Boy Genius” is a fictional story centering on a Snapchat employee, who chronicles the rise of her former Stanford classmate — “preeminent douchebag” and current boss Evan Spiegel.
The list, now in its 13th year, was unveiled on Monday and compiled by Franklin Leonard’s Black List organization. The list of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood is based on suggestions of more than 300 film executives, each of whom contributed the names of up to 10 favorite scripts that were written in, or are somehow uniquely associated with, 2018, and will not have begun principal photography during this calendar year. Scripts had to receive at least seven mentions to be included on the Black List.

The Black List 2018 is here — a survey of the best screenplays that have not yet gone into production.
This year, the 73 films included films about Serena and Venus Williams’ hard-driving father (Zach Baylin’s “King Richard”), the sexual assault case against former NBA star Kobe Bryant (Mike Schneider’s “Mamba”) and Cody Brotter’s “Drudge” about The Drudge Report founder Matt Drudge and how he broke the Monica Lewinsky scandal.
The list also includes Emmy winner Lena Waithe’s “Queen & Slim,” a disgruntled Snapchat employee’s account of founder Evan Spiegel (Elissa Karasik’s “Frat Boy Genius”) and Gary Spinelli’s “Rub & Tug” a project that has been in limbo since Scarlett Johansson’s exit from the project because of objections to her playing a trans man.

Global Lyme Alliance (Gla), the leading 501c3 dedicated to conquering Lyme and other tick-borne diseases through research, education and awareness, will hold its 4th annual New York City Gala on October 11th at Cipriani 42nd Street.
The event aims to raise Lyme disease awareness and research funds to improve diagnostics, treatments and ultimately find a cure for Lyme and other tick-borne diseases.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What is the best reboot/revival of a TV show? (Not of a movie, so no “Fargo.”)
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
Although I’m not a fan of much rebooted or revived TV, I do absolutely love the relaunched version of “Battlestar Galactica”. In the early aughts, Ronald D. Moore reimagined Glen A. Larsen’s 1978 series as a sleek, sexy space opera for what was then known as the Sci-Fi Channel. The obsession with this series is really best described by that classic “Portlandia” sketch, as the new “Battlestar” was accessible even to those who (like myself) are not usually that into sci-fi series.

One film festival I'm bound and determined to make it to one of these years is the South African HorrorFest, but for now I'll just have to live vicariously through those of you who live close enough to attend. And after taking a look at this year's lineup, I'm pretty sure that if you are in the area, you won't want to miss it!
Growing into the country's ultimate Halloween event covering indie, new and classic movies, short films, music, literature and a range of Halloween festivities, 2011 marks the annual South African HorrorFest's lucky 7th year! It runs 26 October through 4 November.
Almost each of the exciting feature films and short films make their South African theatrical premieres. The Makabra Ensemble will also debut their Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde movie soundtrack performance, live to the screening of this 1920 silent classic.
In addition to the colourful audience Halloween dress-up event linked up with the live soundtrack show,...

I was fooled in the best possible way by this panel. What I expected was something akin to the Animatrix for the Night of the Living Dead: short films that referenced or reviewed or reimagined characters or moments from the original Romero Night of the Living Dead. What I got was so much fucking cooler.
150 different artists, who never met each other, were asked to recreate scenes from the original movie in their chosen mediums -- mixed media painting, cartoon sketches, comic book panels, claymation, stop-motion model manipulations, whatever. Then the brainchild behind this product, Mike Schnieder, assembled the finished products and animated them, either through still animation or through the artist's own efforts. And he dubbed it to the original soundtrack of the film, dialogue and all. So what results is this sort of patchwork golem that rolls through the entire archetypal film in a haunting and beautiful and sometimes hilarious way.
