MTV Documentary Films has released the trailer for “Pay Or Die,” a documentary about America’s soaring insulin costs that the platform acquired out of this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival.
The 90-minute film, which was executive produced by Sarah Silverman, will open theatrically at New York City’s IFC Center on November 1, the first day of National Diabetes Month. That screening will be followed by a nationwide rollout. The theatrical release of the doc will qualify it for Academy Award consideration. Paramount + will begin streaming “Pay Or Die” on World Diabetes Day – Nov. 14.
Directed by Scott Alexander Ruderman and Rachael Dyer, “Pay Or Die” follows three families struggling to afford their diabetes medications. In 2022 the American Diabetes Association reported that over 37 million Americans – about 11% of the nation – are living with diabetes and 8.4 million Americans rely on insulin to survive. Exclusive: MTV Documentary Films has acquired worldwide rights to Pay or Die, a heart wrenching film about Americans living with diabetes who face a cruel choice: pay the “extortionate” cost of insulin charged by pharmaceutical companies or risk death.
Scott Alexander Ruderman and Rachael Dyer directed and produced the documentary, which premiered in March at SXSW. MTV Documentary Films plans a theatrical release later this year, followed by a debut on streaming platform Paramount+.
“Today, nearly two-million Americans living with diabetes are being held hostage by the pharmaceutical industry, as many cannot afford insulin,” notes a release about the documentary. “Without this life-sustaining drug, they will be dead in days. Access to this drug has become increasingly more difficult, as the cost to patients in America soars. Pay or Die follows families struggling to afford their medications and reveals the harrowing reality of living with a chronic illness in the richest country in the world.

Jarvis Cocker’s band Jarv Is… covered the Velvet Underground’s “Venus in Furs” during an exhibition saluting choreographer Michael Clark.
The sextet faithfully recreated the droning tune, which appeared on 1967’s The Velvet Underground & Nico, with Cocker crooning over Serafina Steer’s bowed harp and Emma Smith’s eerie violin. The group also covered the Fall’s “Big New Prinz,” tackled the former Pulp frontman’s own solo cut “Further Complications” and played “House Music All Night Long” from Jarv Is…’ debut LP, the July-issued Beyond the Pale.

A two-day auction of George Michael’s art collection earned over $15 million, which will be used toward the late singer’s philanthropic efforts.
During his lifetime, Michael amassed dozens of works by contemporary British artists – like Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas, Michael Craig-Martin and Marc Quinn – who formed the Young British Art movement.
“Through visits to galleries and artists’ studios, [Michael] developed friendships with many of the Yba artists whose work he deeply admired,” Christie’s auction house in London said of Michael’s collection, which 12,000 people visitors viewed at a pre-auction exhibition.

Much of the chatter at the 56th Venice Biennale, which opens this week, seems to be related to the British pavilion, which features works by that great Yba — always a Yba, but 53 this year, and living in the country — Sarah Lucas. It’s very much in the spirit of her practice, as there is a lot of genitalia. The phallic sculptures stretch toward the sky, the naked halves of white bodies flail around, and there are cigarettes sticking out of the anuses and vaginas. It looks like fun!The British press have always treated the YBAs as saucy, sexy home-grown celebs, so the critics were out in full force to digest her naughty bits. Here’s Alastair Sooke in The Telegraph: Well, take the big sculpture in the opening gallery: a reclining, custard-coloured figure enigmatically titled Deep Cream Maradona. Arching his back, he thrusts a towering, 9-ft erection towards the skylight.

Held in conjunction with Christie’s, the Sara Charlton Charitable Foundation (Sccf) hosted a charity gala and auction for In The Name of Honour, a ground-breaking Contemporary art exhibition at One Mayfair exploring violence against women, gender and the female body. Taking place from 19–22 September, the exhibition is open to the public, while the Gala Event last night, on 18 September, raised in excess of £230,000 through a live art auction of ten artworks, a silent auction of celebrity sketches as well as sales of artworks in the exhibition and pledges.
“We are overwhelmed by the amount of support we have received,” comment Sccf CEO and COO Antonia Packard and Rhea Gargour. “It is immensely inspiring to have had so many artists and celebrities donate their works for this cause, and all proceeds will go directly to those who are most in need of it – the amount of women suffering from domestic...

Taking place from 19–22 September, the exhibition will open with a special Gala Event on 18 September at One Mayfair.
With one in four women in the UK suffering abuse in their lifetime, and with some 3000 reported cases of honour-based violence each year, there is an urgent need for action. The 18-22 September 2013 will mark an important week as the Sccf launches their gala evening and sale of artworks to raise funds for victims of abuse. The artworks will be on display and open to the public until 22 September, during which time educational days, workshops and artist talks will also take place. Top Criminal Behavioural Analyst Laura Richards is advising the Sccf on its educational programme.

Exhibition of the week: Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2012
Who can tell what is good and promising in brand new art? Who can choose the most promising people graduating from art schools? The judges of New Contemporaries, that's who, and they have been taking on this challenge since 1949 (well, not the same judges, obviously). This is a tremendous event, a real chance to encounter artists you have never heard of and see what the latest generation is up to. Great to see it at the Ica for the third year running. Go, get your art raw and wild.
• Ica, London SW1, from 28 November until 13 January 2013
Other exhibitions this week
Furniture
Is furniture art? Of course it is, from 18th-century chairs to modernist tables, and this new gallery will give the V&A collection the star billing it deserves.

The actor's latest role is as a shop assistant but art's tacit link to commerce is centuries old. Every gallery is a shop
Actor and artist James Franco is to man a pop-up store in Mayfair as the Christmas shopping season gets going to raise funds for a south London art gallery. He's played a hiker trapped under a rock in Danny Boyle's film 127 Hours, so standing behind a counter should be a doddle.
The shop is called House of Voltaire, and it will occupy a space in Adam's Row, Mayfair, in aid of the art gallery Studio Voltaire. Other celebrities are also working in it, and artists including Mark Titchner and Pablo Bronstein have designed goods for this upmarket art boutique.
What is it about art and shopping? They have a long history together. House of Voltaire claims inspiration from the Omega Workshops, which opened in 1913 (hey, that's...

Last week our critics picked their highlights of 2011. Did they get it right? Readers respond with their own highs (and lows)
MattB75
One Man, Two Guvnors was the most fun I've had in a theatre for years – easily the best play of 2011, and James Corden best performer. The National theatre largely misfired for me: A Woman Killed with Kindness, Cherry Orchard, 13, The Kitchen, Frankenstein and Greenland were all largely disappointing.
The RSC's Homecoming was the best revival. Rupert Goold's Merchant of Venice was great fun, even if the inconsistency in Portia's characterisation (from ditzy blond Glee fan to brilliant prosecutor, hm) took the edge off it.
Tom Brooke was my favourite actor of the year – in The Kitchen, and I Am the Wind.
oogin
Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid are still two of my least-admired starchitects. However, credit where it's due. I had the pleasure of wandering Toronto's Ago...

It's pretty tricky to find any support in the arts for the proposed ban on smoking in cars
Smoking: bad for you. Driving: bad for you. Smoking and driving: really, really bad for you. So says the British Medical Association, which wants smoking in cars banned. But if they're looking for a useful, readymade health warning from the arts, they've got their work cut out.
Hollywood spent most of the postwar era promoting smoking as glamorous, meaningful, sociable, sexy, rebellious, and just plain normal. Herculean smokers such as John Wayne and Humphrey Bogart promoted cigarettes off-screen before smoking did them in. And special mention must go to Nicolas Roeg's Bad Timing, in which someone smokes in every scene. Negative portrayals are rare, unless you count Michael Mann's anti-big-tobacco masterpiece The Insider. Let's not even try to deconstruct the 1980s Star Wars anti-smoking ad in which C3PO catches R2D2 sneaking a fag.
