Chicago Med hiatus: When does the show return and what should fans expect from the next new episode?
Chicago Med is still on an extended spring hiatus as the show takes a break before racing toward the season finale.
Some fans may already be upset that the One Chicago shows have taken such a long break during April, but new episodes are on the horizon.
As a reminder, two Hollywood strikes paused the production of the NBC dramas. It delayed the new seasons from premiering for many months.
When the shows finally returned in January, Chicago Med fans were reminded that Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) had left the show.
Dr. Halstead’s final episode was the Season 8 finale, where he quit working at the hospital and traveled to Seattle. When he got off the plane, he was greeted by Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) and her daughter.
Several new doctors have joined the fold on the Chicago Med cast this season, adding some freshness to the show.

Chicago Med alum Torrey DeVitto gave a new interview exploring why she returned to the show.
Torrey played Dr. Natalie Manning for the first six seasons of Chicago Med, most of which had her character in a relationship with Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss).
Her character had to leave the hospital after it was discovered that she was stealing drugs from a drug trial to help her mom.
Those drugs worked, keeping her mom around for much longer. Dr. Halstead tried to take the fall for Dr. Manning, but it didn’t work.
Torrey returned for the first episode of Season 7 to give her character closure. Will went to Natalie’s house to say goodbye to her and her son, giving them one final conversation before she finished packing her car to leave for Seattle.
Chicago Med fans were surprised when Torrey secretly returned to film a scene for the Season 8 finale.

‘Chicago Med’: First Look at Sophia Ali as ‘Impulsive’ New Doc Causing Headaches for Archer (Photos)
Chicago Med might have said goodbye to a couple of original cast members last season (Brian Tee and Nick Gehlfuss), but the Ed is getting help from some new blood this year. The Wilds‘ Sophia Ali has joined the cast in the recurring role of Dr. Zola Ahmad, TV Insider has learned. In order to help her patients, Zola often acts impulsively in ways the hospital doesn’t approve of. She will be introduced in the second episode of the season, “This Town Ain’t Big Enough for Both of Us,” airing January 24. Check out photos of her above and below. George Burns Jr/NBC Executive producers Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider previously teased this new resident. “She’s someone who will cause a lot of headaches for the Chief of the Ed, Archer [Steven Weber],” Schneider shared. “She will overstep. She’s impulsive.” That’s not all that Archer will be dealing with.

Last season, Chicago Med bid adieu to three series regulars: Guy Lockard, who played Ed pediatrician Dr. Dylan Scott, plus original stars Brian Tee (aka Dr. Ethan Choi) and Nick Gehlfuss (Dr. Will Halstead). Meanwhile, longtime Chicago P.D. star Jesse Lee Soffer (Jay Halstead) left the cop drama in Season 10’s third episode.

It’s been a long wait for NBC’s Chicago Med to return with its 9th Season but with the premiere less than a week away (January 17), Deadline has some juicy nuggets to tease about the show’s return.
In the Season 8 finale, the medical drama said goodbye to Day 1-er Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) who handed in his resignation after finding himself more and more unsettled with the new changes implemented at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center following Jack Dayton’s purchase of the hospital. His main concern was Dayton’s insistence on using the O.R. 2.0. even after a machine error caused the death of a patient and could’ve also claimed Dayton’s life.
Dayton’s live surgery for investors cost him nearly all his money after showing the high-tech machine wasn’t ready for showtime. So to stay afloat financially, Dayton sells the hospital.

Change is coming to the One Chicago shows. Chicago Fire, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Med will all return in 2024 with new episodes. But fans will have to brace themselves for the departure of some much-loved characters in the upcoming seasons, as well as the introduction of at least one new face.
Kara Killmer leaving ‘Chicago Fire,’ Tracy Spiridakos out at ‘Chicago P.D.’
The most recent seasons of the One Chicago shows were marked by some high-profile cast member exits. Chicago P.D. Season 10 was Jay Halstead actor Jesse Lee Soffer’s last with the Dick Wolf drama. Chicago Fire Season 11 saw Taylor Kinney make a sudden (albeit temporary) exit due to a personal matter. And Chicago Med experienced some major changes in season 8, with Brian Tee (Dr. Ethan Choi), Nick Gehlfuss (Will Halstead), Guy Lockard (Dr. Dylan Scott), and Sarah Rafferty (Dr. Pamela Blake) all moving on from Gaffney Chicago Medical Center.

More often than not, Dick Wolf franchises feel untouchable.
Depending on how well actor negotiations have gone regarding artificial intelligence, it wouldn't be entirely unsurprising if, 20 years from now, we still have an AI-generated rendition of Olivia Benson protecting and advocating for abuse survivors on Law Order: Svu.
There's longevity in the Dick Wolf series, whether it's the Law & Order franchise or One Chicago. And by now, viewers have grown accustomed to a revolving door of beloved characters and actors over the years to sustain the series.
But is there a breaking point to that? Will there ever be a point, at least for the One Chicago series, where too many casting changes and a different formula for screentime for budgetary purposes reach a point of no return?
Budget Cuts Mean Less Screentime for Fan-Favorite One Chicago Characters

Chicago Fire will say goodbye to Kara Killmer during the NBC show’s twelfth season, Deadline has confirmed. It is as yet unknown how many episodes her character Sylvie Brett will appear in.
Killmer joined the popular procedural during its third season with Sylvie serving as a central character throughout. Jesse Spencer, who played her love interest Matt Casey, departed from the show in 2021 but has returned as a guest star.
In the Season 11 finale, Matt proposed to Sylvie and at the time we guessed it could mean Spencer could return to the show. Instead, it appears the relationship could end in marriage with the pair riding off into the sunset together. The idea is certainly on trend as this was how Brian Tee and Yaya Dacosta departed Chicago Med as well as Nick Gehlfuss and Torrey DeVitto on the same series.
What could that mean for Chicago P.D.

There's never a dull moment on Chicago Med, but the NBC drama will open its doors to someone with ties to one of the show's longest-serving cast members.
TVLine reports that the series is eyeing "an early thirtysomething male Emergency Department doctor."
The mystery individual will have a connection with Dr. Charles (played by Oliver Platt).
Initially, the new character will be a recurring player, but as we've seen in the past, people tend to get upgraded to series regular status if they resonate with viewers.
The unnamed new addition "comes from a troubled background, which led him to cross paths with Dr. Charles when he was growing up."
Like other long-running series, Chicago Med has lost its fair share of cast members throughout the years, but Chicago Med Season 8 wrote out many ongoing cast members.

Premiering this Wednesday at 8/7c, LA Fire & Rescue is a new docuseries from #OneChicago executive producer Dick Wolf that gives viewers an inside look into the workings of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. While Windy City firefighters have to contend with snow, tighter streets and older buildings, Los Angeles presents its own set of challenges that are no picnic for first responders.

NBC's Chicago Med is saying goodbye to another original star.
Chicago Med Season 8 concluded with Nick Gehlfuss departing as Dr. Will Halstead.
The good news? A pre-planned goodbye brought Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) into the fold.
If you watch Chicago Med online, you know the big episode wrapped up with Will and Natalie back together.
It's rare on TV nowadays to give characters a satisfying conclusion, but bringing Natalie back helped soften the blow of Will's departure.
It brought both arcs full circle in ways many didn't think possible.
Gehlfuss opened up about exiting the series in an interview with Deadline, revealing that his contract was coming to a close for the second time.
"I was going to have to make a decision about starting a new one or not," he told the outlet.
"A few months ago, I made that decision."
"It was important to me to...

Blood was spilled — so, so much blood — in Chicago P.D.‘s volatile Season 10 finale as Intelligence closed in on white supremacist Richard Beck.
For Ruzek, hanging around a racist for an extended period was not fun, and the case began to take its toll. Confiding in Burgess and seeing Makayla seemed to be the only things keeping him sane.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from “Red Waterfall,” the Season 11 finale of NBC’s “Chicago Fire.”
Is another main character leaving the One Chicago universe? During the “Chicago Med” finale on Wednesday, original star Nick Gehlfuss made his final appearance — one of the many exits that has happened over the last year in the Dick Wolf procedurals.
During the Season 11 “Chicago Fire” finale, Mouch was hit by shrapnel during a call with a live shooter. After being rushed to the hospital, the firehouse was alerted that it wasn’t a bullet and that he was alert and recovering.
However, in the final moments of the episode, Herrmann (David Eigenberg) was by Mouch’s side when he realized that he was looking pale. He looked down and saw that Mouch had been bleeding — and then flat-lined. As the camera panned out, it became clear why the title of the episode was “Red Waterfall,...
