Clint Eastwood excels at creating deep stories about the human condition. Whether an old, racist curmudgeon joins a community he once feared or an old, curmudgeon with a flair for Gaelic culture trains a woman to box, Eastwood’s films have been simple stories grounded in real-world prejudices filled with powerful performances. With Hereafter he departs from his typical fare in favor of the supernatural, and whether the film benefits or suffers from this new addition is secondary to the fact that the story isn’t as tight and focused as Eastwood’s past endeavors. This isn’t your typical Eastwood film in terms of content, however the strength Matt Damon and Cecile de France in the lead remind you just how skilled Clint is at working with talented actors.

Chicago – Every once in awhile the question arises as to which films that were reviewed poorly today will be reappraised in future years as much-better than their first reviews suggested. We always read about movies now considered classics that were underappreciated when they were released and wonder what the equivalent movies will be from today. Let me submit Clint Eastwood’s “Hereafter,” recently on DVD and Blu-ray, as a likely candidate.
Blu-Ray Rating: 4.5/5.0
Part of the problem with response to “Hereafter” is that it was a very difficult film to market. Most of the commercials tried to sell Matt Damon in a M. Night Shyamalan-esque supernatural thriller. That’s not this movie. Damon’s story is only a third of the action, another third is subtitled, and the supernatural elements are more for dramatic dissection than thrills. This is a film that would be widely praised if it was...

Of the human condition, that kaleidoscope of ethereal emotion and imagery, there are subjective concepts that can only be perceived through dream and imagination. Films generally approach such topics with a scrutinizing eye in the sense of entertainment, but with little honesty. Clint Eastwood's newest drama, Hereafter, boldly stands as one of the most forthcoming treatments on the extremely potent subject of death and what we dream of beyond that final transition.
The Set-up
Eastwood spins an intertwining tale of three individuals from separate worlds, each touched by death in unique ways, their lives forever altered as the world spins about them oblivious and intent on disbelief. It is this unique perspective, this conditional emotional awareness that sublimely defines the film.
Here's the official synopsis from WB:
George (Matt Damon) is a blue-collar American with a special connection to the afterlife dating from his childhood. French journalist Marie (Cécile de France...

Pretty much overlooked in the States, although it was better received abroad, Clint Eastwood's supernatural drama "Hereafter" spins a fascinating yarn akin to a gentler, more emotional version of "The Dead Zone"… "The Tender Zone?" (Ok, that just sounds dirty, "Hereafter" is a better title.)
Much like Johnny Smith in Stephen King's story, "Hereafter" centers around a San Francisco man named George Lonegan (Matt Damon) alienated due to his gift for being able to see and commune with dead loved-ones upon contact with someone. He's forsaken a lucrative life as a psychic authority in favor of a gig as a lowly factory worker, due to the isolating effects of his power, which we get a glimpse of when a budding relationship with Melanie (Bryce Dallas Howard) gets dashed by his too-close-for-comfort reading of her.
But wait, there's more! Screenwriter Peter Morgan ("The Queen") threads two other seemingly disconnected stories,...

It's a very mixed bag this week for horror title releases. We're not sure how Dread-worthy the supernatural drama Hereafter (directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Matt Damon, Bryce Dallas Howard and Jay Mohr) is but have included it because of its afterlife aspects.
On the list you'll also find a couple of schlocky monster movies, one a double-feature of classic Gamera entries and the other from the Syfy channel featuring Sharktopus (a sea creature that is both a shark and an octopus) with an over-acting Eric Roberts. In addition Syfy is releasing its mockbuster Battle of Los Angeles to take advantage of the current Aliens-Invading-Los-Angeles craze.

Film: ‘Hereafter’; Director: Clint Eastwood; Actors: Matt Damon, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren, Cecile De France; Rating: ***
Clint Eastwood has made a name for himself with his lilting, little gems. He has become an auteur in Hollywood with his own style and pace of filmmaking. Sadly in ‘Hereafter’, he lapses in his own technique, making it a much lesser film than what it could have been.
It traces the near-death experiences of individuals.

Clint Eastwood's latest is an unholy embarrassment that everyone involved will do best to forget, writes Peter Bradshaw
Clint Eastwood fans may, from now on, wish to put their hands over their ears and loudly sing "lalalala" when anyone mentions this film. Hereafter *
Stars: Matt Damon, Cecile De France, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren, Bryce Dallas Howard | Written by Peter Morgan | Directed by Clint Eastwood
Hereafter is over-sentimental, manipulative, nonsensical tripe; a film which not only manages to be punishingly boring but also insulting to your intelligence as well.
It begins with Marie (Cecile De France), a French journalist who has a near-death experience when she’s almost killed by a tsunami. Returning to her job as a successful anchor of French magazine show, she’s clearly not herself and her boyfriend / producer insists that she take time off to finish her book. Meanwhile, in London, Marcus (Frankie McLaren) loses his twin brother Jason (George McLaren) in a car accident and is taken into foster care when his junkie mother is unable to look after him.

Following the traumatic events of the 2004 tsunami and resultant near death experience, television journalist Marie Lelay (Cécile De France) returns to Paris with a new lease of life which quickly alienates her from her atheist colleagues. In London, meanwhile, a familial tragedy leaves 12-year-old Jason (Frankie/George McLaren) in foster-care as he is no longer able to cover up for his drug addict mother. Struggling to cope with his new life, he clings to a remnant of his past – a cap – for comfort and security. These two narratives run parallel to that of retired psychic George Lonnegan (Matt Damon) who is struggling to reinstate normality into his life, perhaps even finding love with fellow culinary student Melanie (Bryce Dallas Howard). Their paths threatening to cross, can each of these victims make their peace with the Hereafter?

This Friday (January 28th) sees the release of the new supernatural drama Hereafter. Oscar winner Matt Damon teams up with Academy Award winner Clint Eastwood and two time Oscar nominated screenwriter Peter Morgan to make this supernatural drama that:
…tells the story of three people who are haunted by mortality in different ways. Matt Damon stars as George, a blue-collar American who has a special connection to the afterlife. On the other side of the world, Marie (Cécile de France), a French journalist, has a near-death experience that shakes her reality. And when Marcus (Frankie/George McLaren), a London schoolboy, loses the person closest to him, he desperately needs answers. Each on a path in search of the truth, their lives will intersect, forever changed by what they believe might-or must-exist in the hereafter.
To celebrate the release of Hereafter we are taking a look at the 5 of the best supernatural flicks in cinema.

David Fincher's "The Social Network"is emerging as the consensus choice as best film of 2010. Most of the critics' groups have sanctified it, and after its initial impact it has only grown it stature. I think it is an early observer of a trend in our society, where we have learned new ways of thinking of ourselves: As members of a demographic group, as part of a database, as figures in...a social network.
My best films list also appears on my main site, but I am posting it here on the blog so that you can comment on it. In response to the reader protests of recent years, I've returned to the time-honored tradition of ten films arranged in order from one to ten. After that, it's all alphabetical. The notion of objectively ordering works of art seems bizarre to me.

Warner Bros. have just sent us the new UK poster for Matt Damon’s new movie, Hereafter which sees him back together with director, Clint Eastwood. They most recently worked together on Invictus which didnt do that well in the Us but I really enjoyed.
Hereafter also stars Cécile de France (“A Secret”) as Marie, and twins Frankie and George McLaren. The international cast also includes Jay Mohr (“Street Kings,” TV’s “Gary Unmarried”), Bryce Dallas Howard (“Eclipse,” “Spider-Man 3”), Marthe Keller, Thierry Neuvic and Derek Jacobi.
Synopsis: Oscar® winner Matt Damon (“Good Will Hunting,” “Invictus”) stars in “Hereafter,” directed by Academy Award® winner Clint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby,” “Unforgiven”) from a screenplay by two time Oscar® nominee Peter Morgan (“Frost/Nixon,” “The Queen”).

Peter Morgan owes his writing career to an attack of stage fright. He was appearing in a University of Leeds production of "Love's Labour's Lost" when he suddenly realized he couldn't go on and give his speech as the king. "I sat backstage and said, 'I never want to do this again,'" Morgan recalls. Instead he turned to writing; his first play was called "Gross." "It's 'Gross' not in terms of amounts of money, but as in 'Ew,' " he clarifies. It won him an award and an agent—"a friend of a friend of a friend who came to see it," he says—and he's been a writer ever since. But not just any writer. Morgan is known as an actor's writer, penning scripts that have won performers all kinds of awards, sometimes more than one in a year, as in 2006, when Helen Mirren (for "The Queen") and...

Hollywoodnews.com: Halloween must be around the corner. It was clearly a supernatural week at the movies led by Paranormal Activity 2 (more on that below) and highlighted by the national release of Clint Eastwood’s masterful new drama, Hereafter, a multi-story formatted film in which three unrelated main characters search for meaning after experiencing death – or near-death- episodes that have a profound effect on their lives. The film opened on a limited basis last weekend in La and NY to a very good $36,000 per screen and this week expanded to 2181 theatres and a $12 million plus gross which is slightly above par for Eastwood openings. Its Rotten Tomatoes rating though is a rather uninspired 51% although top critics give it a much higher 64% which seems more appropriate considering the ambition and the achievement of this intriguing film written by Peter Morgan (The Queen, Last King Of Scotland). Hereafter Directed by: Clint Eastwood Written by: Peter Morgan Starring: Matt Damon, Cécile de France, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jay Mohr Clint Eastwood's past decade as a director has been hit or miss. Along with several Oscar winners and nominations, Eastwood has released several films that seem to hit a growing inconsistent nature. Hereafter continues this inconsistent production style while exploring many of Eastwood's themes of death and the end of life. As a victim of a tsunami, Marie Lelay (Cécile de France) is revived after drowning and experiencing a brief encounter with an afterlife. She has trouble returning to a normalcy within her life as television journalist in France. In London, pre-teen English twin boys Marcus and Jason (Frankie and George McLaren) struggle with their mother's drug-addiction. An unfortunate accident sends a depressed Marcus to live in a foster home where he constantly looks for answers with local faux-psychics.

Clint Eastwood and Matt Damon reunite with a film that tackles the afterlife. But, asks Ron, is Hereafter actually any good?
George Lonegan (Matt Damon) is a man with a talent. Some, like his brother Billy (Jay Mohr) call it a gift. Some, like George himself, call it a curse. Whatever it is, it's something that George is running from.
After a childhood illness and surgery, during which he passed away on the operating table several times only to be brought back to the land of the living, George has gained an ability to speak with the spirits of the recently departed. He only has to take your hands for a brief moment, and the connection is made between George, the spirit world, and the person for whom he is reading.
Apparently, reading people for a psychic is kind of like being in the Mafia. Just when you think you're out,...

Clint Eastwood’s films have generally dealt with the subject of death in one way or another. Movies like Unforgiven presented an eye-for-an-eye philosophy of death as the appropriate justice for killers. Mystic River was about the effects of a murder on the people left behind. Million Dollar Baby touched on the subject of Euthanasia. Gran Torino showed us a man facing his own mortality. Now, Eastwood gives us a look at death from the other side.
Clint Eastwood’s previous films have always been grounded in a grim reality. He’s never delved into sci-fi or horror before as a director. Eastwood is a master at capturing the intense emotions people deal with during very real crisis situations. Hereafter is a major departure from the director’s earlier oeuvre. Perhaps now that he’s reached 80, he’s become more contemplative about what survives beyond death than by what precedes it.

New 'Hereafter' movie delivered Matt Damon, lots of emotion & more. Warner Bros. Pictures released their new supernatural/drama,Matt Damon branded flick "Hereafter" into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out,and thought it was ok for what it was. It delivered a lot of emotions, drama, and a pretty good story line. The movie stars: Matt Damon, Cecile de France, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren, Jay Mohr, and Bryce Dallas Howard. "Hereafter" movie revolved around character George Lonegan (Matt Damon) who is a retired psychic that used to have a website and thriving business. However,he gave it up because he felt that his psychic gifts were a curse and kept him from having a normal life. Now, he works in a factory and is happy. Meanwhile, in other parts of the world, a little boy named Marcus loses his twin brother to a car accident. A...

Hereafter
Directed by: Clint Eastwood
Cast: Matt Damon, Cécile De France, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren, Jay Mohr, Bryce Dallas Howard
Running Time: 2 hrs 9 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: November 5, 2010
Plot: It’s the story of a psychic (Damon), a woman (De France) who experiences near death, and twins (Frankie and George McLaren) who go through a life and death moment.
Who’S It For? Are you already a believer in what is beyond this life? Do psychics play a role in your beliefs? I think it will help in this otherwise slow moving drama.
Expectations: Believe. You must believe. Those thoughts are just about all I took from approximately nine seconds of the trailer that I watched. I love Matt Damon. Eastwood’s directing hasn’t done it for me lately. In fact, Invictus is one of Damon’s worst of his career. I have my guard up with Hereafter.

Hereafter
Starring Matt Damon, Cecile De France, Frankie and George McLaren
Directed by Clint Eastwood
Rated PG-13
It wouldn't be fair to describe Hereafter as a movie about the afterlife, although that is ostensibly its premise. Like a thought on the tip of your tongue that you just can't seem to find the words for, the movie scuttles the surface of the concept, but never dives in.
George (Matt Damon) is a psychic who's worn out by his ability. He used to make a handsome living by communicating with the dead on behalf of his clients, but the weight of what he was doing got to him. "A life that's all about death," he tells his brother (Jay Mohr) at one point, "is no life at all." But his gift keeps pulling him back—and for a guy who continually says he no longer gives readings, it turns out he can be convinced pretty easily.

Is the life we perceive to exist after death already happening to us in our living years? You might find out in Clint Eastwood’s, Hereafter.
This film leaves lots of questions. Like the actual here-after, which to some is a myth and others a faith, this film is filled with uncertainty. We don’t know what happens when we die, and in this film – you won’t fully understand these characters and the story, even after the credits roll. It’s fitting that a film based on the concept of the hereafter would offer a vision as non sequenced and clouded as Director Clint Eastwood’s latest effort; the problem is – it just doesn’t translate to a great film, and in this case – just great performances and an amazing special effects sequence.
Hereafter intertwines three sets of lives which are all connected through a series of untimely events.

Director: Clint Eastwood Writer: Peter Morgan Starring: Matt Damon, Cécile De France, Thierry Neuvic, Jay Mohr, Bryce Dallas Howard, Frankie McLaren, George McLaren Oh Clint, what strange land hath thou taken us to? It’s a land of bizarre ghostly figures, depressed clairvoyants, and British children who wander aimlessly under the gray skies of London. It’s a place of tsunamis juxtaposed against calm, comfortable French restaurants, with French people speaking smartly with subtitles. It’s a place of grown men eating (and cooking) alone. It’s a purposeful place, but oddly lacking purpose. It’s a land of talented actors speaking lines that leave their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths. Oh Clint, what hast thou done! Yes, here in the Hereafter, even Matt Damon cannot slay the mighty beast. Here, Matt plays George, a lonely psychic, who is afraid to touch another for fear of channeling their dead relatives.

Chicago – Clint Eastwood’s “Hereafter” is a dramatic examination of a subject rarely dealt with in American cinema with even an ounce of honest emotion: What happens after we die. Without Shyamalan-esque twists or overwrought melodrama, director Eastwood, writer Peter Morgan, and their incredibly-talented cast have crafted one of the most complex dramas of the year, a piece that has already been misunderstood by the critics that have easily dismissed it but that will eventually be remembered as one of Eastwood’s best films of this period of his remarkable career.

The best films of Eastwood’s career – “Unforgiven,” “Mystic River,” “Million Dollar Baby,” and, of course, others – have almost entirely centered on a small group of characters working with a subject that the director clearly finds personally important. Clint Eastwood has dabbled with the supernatural in movies such as .Pale Rider. and .High Plains Drifter.. The director invoked spiritual ideas and imagery to bring the stories effectively to the big screen.
In his new movie .Hereafter,. Eastwood returns to the supernatural realm to confront the issue of the afterlife. Only this time, death and dying became merely afterthoughts.
I had high expectations for the movie knowing its award-winning pedigree. Eastwood is a commanding director, Matt Damon is a commendable actor, and Peter Morgan (.The Queen,. .Frost/Nixon.) is an intelligent scriptwriter.
But what.s meant to be a meditative film about death and dying quickly disintegrated into some supernatural mumbo jumbo crossed over with a pedantic love story. It just did not work.
The film started promisingly enough. The captivating Cécile De France stars as Marie Lelay, a French journalist on vacation in Southeast Asia who becomes a victim of a tsunami.
