On January 1st, the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse – seen in the animated shorts Plane Crazy, The Gallopin’ Gaucho, and most famously Steamboat Willie – became public domain… which, of course, means we’re now going to get multiple horror movies that feature characters inspired by Mickey Mouse. Within the first three days of the year, we saw the short film The Vanishing of S.S. Willie, a trailer for the slasher movie Mickey’s Mouse Trap, and an announcement that Terrifier 2 producers Steven Della Salla and Michael Leavy and director Steven Lamorte, who previously made the Grinch-inspired horror movie The Mean One, were teaming up for a Steamboat Willie-inspired horror flick. Now it has been confirmed that the movie is called Screamboat, and Iconic Events Releasing will be giving it a theatrical release sometime in 2025.

The short film that introduced Mickey Mouse to the world, 1928’s Steamboat Willie entered the public domain this year, and a handful of Mickey Mouse-themed horror projects have already been announced. One of those films is titled Screamboat, and Bloody Disgusting has learned that the filmmakers are teaming with Iconic Events Releasing for a theatrical release.
From the production teams behind Terrifier 2 and The Mean One, Screamboat is coming to theaters in 2025 via Iconic Events Releasing, we have been informed this afternoon.
In Screamboat, “A mischievous mouse stalks a group of New Yorkers on a late night ferry ride, unleashing murderous mayhem on a relaxing commute. Can the ship’s motley crew of travelers find a way to stop a killer creature who has developed a taste for tourists?”
“Iconic Events couldn’t be more excited to get in on the ground floor of what is going to be a fun and terror-filled ride,...

A second, as-yet-untitled horror film centered on Steamboat Willie, the earliest iteration of Disney’s beloved children’s character Mickey Mouse, is in the works from director-producer Steven Lamorte and the producers of Terrifier 2, the team announced on Tuesday.
News of the project comes just a day after Steamboat Willie’s entry into the public domain. The first horror pic centered on the character, the Jamie Bailey-helmed slasher Mickey’s Mouse Trap, unveiled a new trailer yesterday, which you can view at the link below. Also emerging following the character’s public domain debut was the announcement of new indie horror video game Infestation 88.
Lamorte’s Steamboat Willie horror comedy watches as a late-night boat ride turns into a desperate fight for survival in New York City when a mischievous mouse becomes a monstrous reality. Can a motley crew survive a killer creature with a taste for tourists?...

First there was “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey.”
Now, get ready for “Steamboat Willie” horror films.
The 1928 version of Mickey Mouse entered the public domain on Monday, and indie horror producers are wasting no time in capitalizing on it.
Steven Lamorte is set to direct an untitled horror-comedy based on Mickey’s cartoon debut. In it, a sadistic mouse will torment a group of unsuspecting ferry passengers. Production is set to begin in the spring.
“Steamboat Willie has brought joy to generations, but beneath that cheerful exterior lies a potential for pure, unhinged terror,” Lamorte said in a press release. “It’s a project I’ve been dreaming of, and I can’t wait to unleash this twisted take on this beloved character to the world.”
Lamorte previously directed “The Mean One,” a horror parody of the Grinch.
“It all comes from our love of these characters,” he said in an interview.

The Mean One, along with Mad Heidi and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey was part of an unexpected crop of horror and exploitation films based on children’s tales that dropped last Christmas. Since Dr. Suess’ Grinch is still under copyright the makers of this film had to change a few names to bring us the tale of Cindy You-Know-Who and the residents of Newville’s battle against the evil green creature known as The Mean One.
Our story begins with a familiar flashback accompanied by the rhyming narration of Christopher Sanders but, in a twist, just as young Cindy (Saphina Chanadet; Balance of the Force) is about to change The Mean One’s attitude her mother appears and attacks him, getting herself killed in the process.

XYZ Films gave director Steven Lamorte’s horror film The Mean One, a “violent slasher parody” that draws clear inspiration from the Dr. Seuss classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, a theatrical release in the U.S. last December. If you didn’t catch The Mean One last year, you may be glad to hear that DeskPop Entertainment is now planning to give the film a VOD release on October 3rd!

Their specialty in working with genre films like ours make them the perfect partner for our unique brand of Christmas chaos!“

Dr. Seuss’ children’s story “How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” has likely withstood the test of time because of its simple yet effective message: The Christmas season has more to do with community than material items. There’s also its eponymous villain, whose grouchy “Bah! Humbug!” spirit in the face of borderline-oppressive seasonal cheer is as understandable as his eventual redemption. The fable has been adapted to the big and small screen numerous times, from the lovely 1966 animated TV film directed by Chuck Jones to Ron Howard’s misbegotten eyesore starring Jim Carrey as a live-action Grinch. The source material’s bare plot and ubiquitous imagery make it a malleable text ripe for a wide range of interpretations, the latest of which is “The Mean One,” an unauthorized slasher parody starring David Howard Thornton, aka the man behind Art the Clown in the “Terrifier” films.

Plot: A parody of the classic Dr. Seuss story How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, The Mean One imagines what it would have been like if the Grinch was a bloodthirsty killer.
Review: Theodor “Dr. Seuss” Geisel first told the world How the Grinch Stole Christmas back in 1957, when the story – written in rhymed verse – was published as a book and also in the pages of Redbook magazine. That tale has been a beloved classic for sixty-five years now, and has received multiple adaptations over the decades, including an animated TV movie that was narrated by Boris Karloff, a 2000 live-action film starring Jim Carrey as the Grinch, a computer animated film with Benedict Cumberbatch voicing the Grinch, and a popular musical. They all keep the same basic story intact: a furry green fellow called the Grinch lives in a cave overlooking the town of Whoville, and becomes deeply annoyed with the town’s Christmas celebrations.

"Time to roast this beast" XYZ Films has revealed an official trailer for another crazy holiday horror movie titled The Mean One, a slasher parody of The Grinch. Yes, this is real, and it exists, and it's dropping on VOD in December. Apparently they're releasing this for free, most likely because they can't use the Grinch copyright (from Dr. Seuss) and make money off of it, but they can release the finished film as a parody. In a sleepy mountain town, Cindy has her parents murdered and her Christmas stolen by a blood thirsty green figure in a red Santa suit - "The Mean One". When the ravenous, Christmas hating creature terrorizes the town and threatens to ruin the holiday, she finds a new purpose - trapping and killing the monster. Terrifer 2's David Howard Thornton stars as the green meanie, with Krystle Martin as the adult Cindy You-Know-Who out for revenge.

The Grinch's blood-red Santa Claus coat isn't the only splash of crimson that'll be decking the halls this holiday season. Inspired by Dr. Seuss's classic children's story, the hairy green villain is making a killer comeback in XYZ Films' new parody horror movie.
"The Mean One" - which got its title from the song "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch," originally performed by Thurl Ravenscroft in the 1966 animated TV special "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" - reimagines the story of the infamous Grinch by sucking out all the childood whimsy and replacing it with a gruesome storyline that results in piles of blood-stained snow.
If Dr. Seuss's original Grinch was as cuddly as a cactus and as charming as an eel, it sounds like director Steven Lamorte's The Mean One (David Howard Thornton) is someone Cindy You-Know-Who (Krystle Martin) might need to fight off with a 39-and-a-half-foot pole.

In the audacious new parody, The Mean One (Terrifier 2‘s David Howard Thornton) is a hairy, green-skinned grump in a Santa suit, living on a mountain high above the town of Newville, despising the holiday season. Young Cindy You-Know-Who (Krystle Martin), whose parents were butchered by The Mean One twenty Christmases earlier, is returning to town to seek closure… but when the Mean One launches a new reign of terror that threatens to destroy Christmas, Cindy finds a bold new purpose – trapping and killing the monster.
