Before there were horror movies, there were legends. Passed down through oral tradition, our earliest ancestors created colorful fables of vengeful gods, malevolent witches, and ravenous beasts lurking in the darkest corners of the night. Often told to entertain, these spooky tales also included hidden warnings about the dangers of straying from the path, disobeying one’s parents, or breaking social norms. As the years have passed between then and now, so have the stories. Horrific tales of poisoned apples have become whispered warnings to check Halloween candy for razor blades. Trolls lurking in the woods have transformed into a hook-handed murderer haunting lover’s lane.
Contemporary legends are more likely to be shared in an email forward than around the campfire, but their functions remain the same. These tales exist to help us navigate an unpredictable world and their subjects have evolved alongside our cultural fears. We’ve also updated our methods of delivery,...

When Paranormal Activity entered the psyche of audiences in 2009, it made people scared of being at home – especially during the middle of the night.

Witness the power... of the activity! Paramount has debuted the first short TV spot for Gregory Plotkin's Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension, the latest sequel in the never-ending Paranormal Activity horror franchise. The hint is that this is supposed to be the end of it all, finale, and they're going all out by making it in 3D. Oh boy. The cast includes Chris J. Murray, Brit Shaw, Ivy George, Dan Gill and Chloe Csengery. This looks like they're really trying to go all out and scare the crap out of everyone with cheesy FX, and intense violence, but why not if it's truly the last one. Hide under the covers and watch. The "Paranormal Activity" movies are credited with taking the terror out of art-directed dungeons and dilapidated bathrooms and putting it right smack dab in the middle of our bedrooms. The "Saw" series raised a white flag of surrender after "Paranormal Activity" took most of the Halloween box office dollars in 2009, bringing an end to Jigsaw's legacy and returning us to the land of lo-fi horror.
Since then, the "Paranormal" series has become something of its own "Saw"-sized franchise, with the fourth installment set to hit theaters this Friday. Somewhat unfortunately (though probably inevitably), the more this decades-spanning haunted house tale expands and explains its increasingly silly mythology, the less scary and interesting it becomes — though we have to give props to the producers for maintaining the low-budget, "found footage" aesthetic that the first film incorporated so brilliantly.

Chicago – It is incredibly rare for a third installment in a franchise to find what was lost in the second one. That usually takes much longer, if it ever comes. “Saw III,” “Friday the 13th, Part III,” “Halloween III” — none of these movies come close to the original. Which is why it’s so remarkable to report that “Paranormal Activity 3” comes surprisingly close to the quality of the first film, arguably surpassing it.
Blu-ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
Where “Paranormal Activity 2” was a lot like watching the same rabbit come out of the same hat, the follow-up is a refreshing remix of the strengths of the first film. Stars: Christopher Nicholas Smith, Lauren Bittner, Chloe Csengery, Jessica Tyler Brown | Written by Christopher Landon | Directed by Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman
Paranormal Activity 3 takes audiences back to where it all began with a prequel directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman the filmmakers who created the “is it real?” documentary Catfish. Set in the 80′s, the film follows the protagonists of the first two movies Katie and Kristie in their childhood home where they, and their parents – wedding videographer Dennis (Smith) and his girlfriend Julie (Bittner) – are haunted by a mysterious entity known only as Toby…
I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of the Paranormal Activity franchise or “found footage’ movies in general but, like any good reviewer, I have to put my prejudices aside and judge the film on its own merits. Which in the case of this prequel/three-quel are few and far between.

The third time is the charm? It certainly charmed the box office (so look out for a fourth) and returned much on the investment. There are some good jump scares, but maybe the formula is a bit too noticeable as well. Again, those box office numbers will negate any criticism since Paramount is laughing all the way to the bank. 2005 . Katie (Katie Featherston) delivers a box of videotapes to her sister Kristi.s (Sprauge Grayden) house. Kristi and her husband Daniel (Brian Boland) dump them in their basement. Last week Paramount held a "Tea With Toby" at The Roosevelt Hotel in celebrate today's DVD/Blu-ray release of Paranormal Activity 3. What was "Tea With Toby"? It was a press event where I (among other journalists) was summoned to the hotel for a late afternoon Tea. Complete with sandwiches, smoked salmon, little pastries - what I had always imagined Tea being like in England. We were there to discuss the film (and the franchise) with Oren Peli, Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Christopher Smith, Chloe Csengery and Jessica Tyler Brown. While it was a breezy and enjoyable 90 minutes, the gracious and polite Peli lived up to his notoriously tight-lipped reputation in regard to any new info on the series. And the cast followed suit.

The third film in the hugely successful "found footage" series arriving on DVD and Blu-ray today, ShockTillYouDrop recently attended a special Paranormal Activity event at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood.
Dubbed "Tea with Toby" after the supernatural entity that is finally given a name in the third film, the gathering brought together the series' creator, Oren Peli and cast members from all three films, including the first film's stars, Katie Featherston (Katie) and Micah (Micah Sloat) and the third film's Christopher Nicholas Smith (Dennis), Chloe Csengery (Young Katie) and Jessica Tyler Brown (Young Kristi Rey).

Paranormal Activity 3 haunts home video on January 23 when it comes to DVD and Blu-ray, and in celebration of its imminent release alongside Paranormal Activity: The Chronology on VOD, the stars and creator of the hit horror franchise assembled at Hollywood's legendary Roosevelt Hotel on Friday the 13th for "Tea with Toby" to reveal production secrets, confess their own fears -- and spill a few beans on Paranormal Activity 4…

Paramount is going out of their way to let you know that Paranormal Activity 3 debuts on January 24, 2012 from Paramount Home Entertainment in a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack with UltraViolet and a Digital Copy. This time, they've unloaded two scenes deleted from the theatrical cut of the film that will be included in the supplements of the Blu (if not in the extended cut of the film itself). I, among other journalists, recently sat down for tea with Oren Peli, Katie Featherston, Micah Sloat, Christopher Smith, Chloe Csengery and Jessica Tyler Brown to discuss the film's home video release and try to get answers out of them regarding the future of the franchise. Look for that article to hit closer to release date. In the meantime, hit the jump to check out the clips!

On a bright and sunny Friday the 13th, Dread Central was invited alongside several other journalists to have "Tea with Toby"- the demon behind all the terrifying shenanigans in the Paranormal Activity series- as well as a few of his co-stars and the mastermind behind it all, writer/director/producer Oren Peli.
During tea we had the opportunity to chat with Peli, stars Katie Featherston and Micah Sloat (whom we first meet during the original film) as well as Christopher Smith, Chloe Csengery and Jessica Tyler Brown from Paranormal Activity 3.
Over the course of a few hours, we heard from everyone in attendance on pretty much anything and everything fans of the Paranormal Activity franchise would want to know. Peli chatted with us about what to expect on the upcoming Blu-ray release of Paranormal Activity 3, the mythology of the highly popular series, the massive amount of support...

In no particular order, these are the stand out films that are worth adding to any video library. The set of criteria is simple: a standout performance by one or more of the first billed actors that can be re-watched time and time again. Their complexity is what defines the film. Also important is the type of chills or thrills the movie offers, and the story being told.
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil
Dir.: Eli Craig.
Cast: Tyler Labine, Alan Tudyk and Katrina Bowden.
Although this film is technically a 2010 product, it did not reach distribution until the following year. This one, like how some of the victims died in film, skips under the gun by being exceptionally funny with an adorable, luggable, teddy bear performance by Tyler Labine. This product is a better answer to a theatrical version of the Beverly Hillbillies. The clash of cultures is perfectly played up for laughs.

The third installment of the horror franchise, Paranormal Activity 3 is a prequel of the first two movies, looking at how the, well, paranormal activity surrounding their family began.
Set in 1988, the film watches young sisters Katie (Chloe Csengery) and Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown) as they make friends with an invisible entity living in their home.
Katie Featherston, Molly Ephraim and Brian Boland return to their roles as the older Katie, Ali Rey and Daniel Rey, respectively, roles Featherston played in both prior movies and Ephraim and Boland introduced in Paranormal Activity 2.
Rated R, the spooky third film, told via security camera footage and home movies, got mixed reviews from critics and audiences, but that didn’t stop Paranormal Activity 3 from racking up $103 million when it was in theaters.

Chris and Reagan looked to knock the dust off their love life in this week's episode, "First Night Away." The lesson? Don't tell Ava the babysitter's dead sick if you don't want her to volunteer to watch your child in her stead. I guess six weeks of no sex will make you do some crazy things.
You had to love how seriously Ava took the enormous responsibility of watching Amy, though. It was a great decision to show off Maya Rudolph's character, as opposed to her caricature. There still were plenty of hilarious moments, such as when she yelled "Stranger Danger" after Kevin said hi to Amy and when she went into Mama Bear/Honey Badger babysitter mode when she thought someone was trying to break into the house.

Directors: Henry Joost, and Ariel Schulman.
Writers: Christopher B. Landon, Oren Peli (characters).
Cast: Chloe Csengery, Jessica Tyler Brown and Christopher Nicholas Smith.
The movie Paranormal Activity 3 finally gets a chance to explain itself and provide for some interesting moments. After the events from the first two movies, there are a lot of questions asked which gets revealed with this new one.
The film begins with an adult Katie (Katie Featherston) going to see Kristi (Sprague Grayden). She is there to see how the happy couple is doing, and to drop off a box of old VHS tapes. She says that they are from Grandma Lois, presumably now deceased, and she has not had the time to look at them. Neither of them remembers those times, and instead of sitting down to watch them, they are being tossed into storage. However, one day later, Kristi's home gets...

I love the .Paranormal Activity. franchise. The first one intrigued me, the second one scared me, and the third made me believe in the potency of the franchise. So I was happy as a clam to interview the directors of the third installment, Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman.
("Paranormal Activity 3" Movie Review)
One of the biggest questions the fans were asking was . how come there were some scenes shown in the trailer that were not shown on the final cut?
But we.ll get to that in a minute.
For now, let.s congratulate Joost and Schulman for keeping the .Paramount Activity. tradition of no gore, just good old-fashioned scares alive!
Oh yeah, and let.s congratulate them too for having the biggest box-office opening for a horror film ever, and for the biggest opening of any film in October!
In this interview, we talked about:

In Paranormal Activity 3 up-and-coming actress Lauren Bittner portrays Julie, the super-sensible mom trying to raise her two young daughters, Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown) and Katie (Chloe Csengery), with the help of her videographer boyfriend Dennis (Christopher Nicholas Smith). But for anyone who has seen the first two installments in the growing Paranormal Activity franchise, we know that things won't be going very smoothly for Julie, Dennis and the girls once Kristi's new imaginary friend "Toby" settles in to torment the young family.
Recently Dread Central caught up with Bittner to talk about the latest Paranormal Activity sequel, and while there was a lot that she wasn't able to share with us (understandably so since secrecy is the name of the game with this franchise), the actress did talk a bit about her experiences on set making one of the scariest movies of the year and if she knows whether...

A Halloween massacre came early this year. Paramount Pictures’ “Paranormal Activity 3” earned its franchise record $54 million on 3,321 theaters for the top spot in the weekend box office. It also included the $8 million midnight screening. The third film beat out last year’s “Paranormal Activity 2” debut of $40.7 million. “Paranormal Activity 3” is a prequel set in 1988 about young sisters befriending an invisible entity in their home. The $5-million budget film stars Chloe Csengery, Jessica Tyler Browner, Katie Featherson, Sprague Grayden, Lauren Bittner and Christopher Nicholas Smith. Summit Entertainment’s “The Three Musketeers” fell short of expectations on its new take of the Alexandre Dumas tale. The Paul W.S. Anderson-directed film garnered $8 million in 3,017 theaters for fourth place. “The Three Musketeers” starred Logan Lerman, Christoph Waltz, Matthew MacFadyen, Ray Stevenson, Luke Evans and Milla Jovovich. In rounding out of the top five, “Real Steel” fell one spot to second place with $11.3 million,...

Paranormal Activity 3
Directed by Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman
Written by Christopher B. Landon, Oren Peli
Starring Lauren Bittner, Chloe Csengery, Christopher Nicholas Smith, Jessica Tyler Brown, Dustin Ingram, Katie Featherston, Sprague Grayden
Release Date: October 21, 2011
It was not surprising that Paranormal Activity was turned into a franchise after the original, which was made on a budget of $15,000, made over $100 million at the box office. What is surprising is that Paranormal Activity 3, despite rehashing the same formula as the first two films, still manages to scare people half to death.
The evil is back. The incorporeal evil has been caught on tape again, and this time it has a name... Toby. That's right, the malevolent entity haunting the family in the Paranormal Activity series is named Toby. At least, that is, according to Kristi (Jessica Tyler Brown), who gives the name to what her sister Katie (Chloe Csengery) thinks is her imaginary friend.

By now, you know the drill. Husband or boyfriend has a video camera, begins to suspect something otherworldly is amiss, wires the house with more video cameras, the violence from the spirits escalates, many jolts and surprises later, we reach a climax that leaves us eagerly awaiting the next installment.
Even though it’s pretty by the numbers at this point, Paranormal Activity 3 still stands as the scariest movie since, well, the last Paranormal Activity.
(However, they missed the boat by not calling the film Paranormal Activithree. Just saying)
Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman take over directing duties for this installment. The dudes know how to create suspense with documentary footage, as evidenced by their breakout hit Catfish. That movie may have led some viewers to cry foul over the authenticity of the “documentary” narrative, but one couldn’t deny the filmmakers were talented. They prove that talent here...

In the ever annoying home video genre of horror, Paranormal Activity remains as a powerhouse. Instead of turning into something formulaic and regurgitating the same kind of scares over and over again, the Paranormal Activity series adds to its storyline and consistently comes up with new and creative ways to deliver the scares. This is most evident with the latest installment which will come to many as a surprise. Former Catfish directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman have done the unthinkable with a third tier film in a restrictive sub genre---they made it pretty darn good.

Movie Review: 'Paranormal Activity 3'; Star Cast: Christopher Nicholas Smith, Katie Featherston, Chloe Csengery, Jessica Tyler Brown; Directors: Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman; Rating: **** - manages to scare.
'Paranormal Activity 3' is a surprising film. Yes, horror films are expected to shock. Yet the beauty of this film lies in it managing to give you the creeps even after you have seen the first two. You realise that there isn't much new added to this one. That it does so without being cheeky or over the top, is its greatest strength.
After hearing strange sounds in his new house,.

Chicago – Horror films that delicately balance the psychological nature of fear with the actual chills are as rare as Lady Gaga without attention. “Paranormal Activity 3” is one of those scary “delights,” essentially walking the tightrope between screaming “boo” in a crowded theater and tensely sending electricity down the spine.

In the capable creator hands of the perplexing film “Catfish” from last year, directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, “PA3” becomes a voyeuristic dream, shot through the prism of 1980s camcorders. This prequel to the first Paranormal Activity films takes the sister characters of Katie and Kristi Rey and places them back as children in the late 1980s, and uses the distinct technique of the two filmmakers – constant point-of-view use of camcorder perspective – as the basis for all the great scary moments.

If you’re like me, you were rather used to Saw‘s Halloween splash, spending the holiday watching helpless victims get ripped limb from limb, blood splattering everywhere and a puppet ride around on a tricycle. No, it wasn’t quality filmmaking, but it was tradition and holiday appropriate. Well, no more settling necessary. Paranormal Activity 3 Directed by: Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman Written by: Christopher B. Landon Starring: Chloe Csengery, Jessica Tyler Brown, Christopher Nicholas Smith, Lauren Bittner Reigning king of the "Gotcha!" moment, Paranormal Activity is back – and though the premise may have worn thin, (how many compulsive videographers can one extended family have?) its minimalist scare tactics are as effective as ever. Scream for scream, the theater experience is without rival; hushed gasps, nervous tittering, and shrieks of surprise are empirical evidence of the films' effectiveness. Hence the backlash when Paranormal Activity hit home video: these movies cater to a crowd. A prequel of sorts, Paranormal Activity 3 rewinds the franchise to 1988, illuminating the origins of the Presence that ran amok in parts one and two. Helmed by Catfish directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, the flick treads familiar territory, but keeps the audience on its toes. One of the major...

This week, Fat Guy Kevin Carr dresses up in a frilly lace cravat and some leather boots, grabs his sword and takes a trip to France to become a Musketeer. Unfortunately, he seems to be almost 400 years too late for those kinds of shenanigans. So he hops the English Channel to become a spy with Mi-7. Of course, no one told him that Mi-7 was actually nothing more than propaganda. So he heads back home for a good night’s sleep, and to make sure that happens, he videotapes himself throughout the house. While he doesn’t witness any paranormal activity, there are many unspeakable things that can be seen on them. Want to hear what Kevin has to say on the Fat Guys at the Movies podcast? Oren Peli’s original Paranormal Activity capitalized on an underutilized fear. What could be more terrifying than an unseen creature lurking in the shadows, stalking us within the safety of our own home as we lay asleep and at our most vulnerable? Most would expect the series’ minimalist filming style and simple concept to have run its course by the third time out. Yet new directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman (Catfish) bring a fresh, welcome enthusiasm to the series. For fans of the first, Paranormal Activity 3 is a surprisingly worthy follow up.
Technically a prequel, the story is revealed though a series of videotapes recorded in 1988, and featuring child versions of the sister protagonists from the first two films. Katie and Kristi (played here by Chloe Csengery and Jessica Tyler Brown) happily live with their mother Julie (Lauren Bittner) and her videographer partner Dennis (Christopher Nicholas Smith). Just “Found Footage” of a Superior Sequel In Paranormal Activity 3
I am happy to report that I didn’t scream like some audience members of the packed midnight show I attended. However, I did spend a good majority of Paranormal Activity 3 with a knot in my stomach and a hand over my eyes!
PA3 opens with the familiar faces of Katie and Kristi (played once again by Katie Featherston and Sprague Grayden). Katie brings over a box of old family VHS tapes to Kristi’s house for storage. Soon after, Kristi’s home is “invaded” (from the beginning of PA2) and the VHS tapes go missing. This footage then takes us back to 1988, with Katie and Kristi as children living with their mother Julie and her boyfriend Dennis. When Kristi begins talking to an “imaginary friend” named Toby, a familiar weirdness hits the household.
