‘Bye Bye Barry’ Overtakes ‘Kelce’ To Become Prime Video’s Most-Watched Documentary Film Ever In U.S.
Exclusive: There’s a new sports documentary on top at Prime Video.
Bye Bye Barry, which tells the story of hall-of-fame running back Barry Sanders, has become the streamer’s most-viewed documentary movie ever in the U.S. — taking the title from Kelce, just over two months after that sports doc set the record for Prime Video.
In the documentary, Sanders finally explains why he retired from the Detroit Lions in 1999 while at the height of his career. It’s an explanation that sports fans appeared eager to hear, given the film had the biggest first week of any documentary movie ever on Prime Video in the U.S. after debuting on November 21.
Bye Bye Barry premiered at No. 1 among Prime Video’s Top 10 domestic films and has remained there ever since, according to the streamer.

The Kelce brothers have scored a touchdown for Prime Video.
Kelce, the documentary chronicling Philadelphia Eagles team captain and All-Pro center Jason Kelce’s epic year leading to his Super Bowl Lvii matchup against his brother Travis, is now the streamer’s most-watched documentary ever in the U.S. It beat out Val for the top spot.
After premiering on September 12, Kelce had the biggest first three days ever for a documentary film in the U.S. It debuted at No. 1 and has remained in the Top 5 movies on Prime Video throughout the first three weeks of its release.
Amazon didn’t release any viewership numbers for the film, though it will surely be somewhere on the Nielsen streaming charts in the coming weeks (Nielsen reports streaming audience data about a month delayed).

Amazon is making some changes atop its movies team.
Julie Rapaport, who previously served as co-head of movies, will become the sole chief of the division. Matt Newman, Rapaport’s fellow co-head, will transition to a new role at Prime Video’s global sports group, where he is being tasked with developing original sports docuseries, films and scripted projects. He will report to Marie Donoghue, vice president of global sports video at Amazon. Rapaport will continue to report to Amazon Studios chief Jennifer Salke.
Under Rapaport and Newman, Amazon has enacted a major pivot in its strategy. It has moved from producing arthouse films designed to have robust theatrical launches to becoming a more streaming-focused service. Their main push has been to field more populist films. With the pandemic upending traditional studios’ businesses, Amazon moved aggressively to buy movies like “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “Coming 2 America” and “Hotel Transylvania: Transformania,...

Ted Hope had quite a ride at Amazon Studios. Early on, when the independent producer (“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”) saw the digital culture shifts coming to Hollywood, he landed as head of Amazon Original Movies in 2015, where he became the consigliere to successive studio heads who relied on his counsel and support. Today came the news that he would be leaving the job to return to his old routine.
“I came to realize Ted is a producer through and through,” said Amazon studio chief Jennifer Salke in an email to Amazon Studios staffers today. “And that now is the right time for both him and the studio to make a change.”
The news has been a long time coming. Many in Hollywood questioned how long Hope would last inside the Silicon Valley shopping behemoth, but it took five and a half years for Hope to finally make the...

Amazon Studios motion picture executive Ted Hope is stepping down from his role under chief Jennifer Salke, Variety has learned.
The official word from within Amazon is that Hope left by choice, and will transition out with a multi-year first look producing deal at the streamer. He brought deep indie street cred to the fledgling division when it formed. However, many of the films he championed, oversaw, and helped acquire suffered poor results at the box office and received a mixed critical reception.
A replacement for Hope is unlikely as his colleagues Julie Rapaport and Matt Newman will absorb his duties, according to a memo from Salke sent to staff on Thursday congratulating the pair on their “expanded roles.”
In the early days of Amazon’s original movies program, Hope was involved in mounting successful acquisitions like the Academy Award nominated “The Big Sick” and Oscar winner “Manchester By the Sea.

John Lynch, the head of production and worldwide operations at Amazon Studios, is leaving the company, Deadline has confirmed. He had been in the post since 2012, according to his profile on LinkedIn.
Amazon declined comment, but it’s the latest departure on the streamer’s film side, now overseen by Julie Rapaport, Matt Newman and Ted Hope. Head of marketing and distribution Bob Berney exited in June following the expiration of his four-year contract.
Berney was hired in mid-2015 to oversee distribution and marketing for Amazon’s original films. Much has happened at the company since then, as Roy Price exited in late 2017, and Jennifer Salke was brought aboard in February 2018 to run both the film and TV operations after Jason Ropell exited last year.
Rapaport, Newman and Hope report to Salke.

John Lynch is leaving Amazon Studios, the streaming service where he served as head of production and operations, Variety has learned.
Rumors began swirling earlier this week that Lynch was out at the company. Lynch has been with Amazon since 2012, according to his LinkedIn profile. Lynch notified staff of his departure on Friday. It’s unclear what led to his exit. A spokesperson for Amazon declined to comment.
Lynch isn’t the only high-ranking employee to leave Amazon Studios this year. In June, Bob Berney, a widely respected indie film executive, stepped down as head of marketing and distribution. The studio has yet to name a replacement. In 2018, Jason Ropell left as head of motion pictures. He was ultimately replaced by the tag team of Ted Hope, Julie Rapaport and Matt Newman.

We’ve seen how this movie plays out.
Festival audiences lose their mind for, say, an uplifting drama or a biting satire. Their rapturous response sends studios scrambling for their wallets. Cue an all-night bidding war, and to the victor goes … an indie movie with iffy commercial prospects.
From “Late Night” to “Blinded by the Light,” many of the big sales at this year’s Sundance ended in financial failure. As the movie business gears up for the Toronto Film Festival, studios may be more wary of cutting big checks. Will an all-too-familiar narrative of frenzy resulting in flops change once Hollywood touches down in Canada?
“People have short memories,” says Tom Quinn, founder of Neon, the indie distributor behind “Parasite” and “Apollo 11.” “A lot of these failures are the result of companies chasing the moment and the headline. A big acquisition is alluring for a company that is...

Five months after premiering at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, Tayarisha Poe’s feature film debut “Selah and The Spades” has been picked up by Amazon Studios.
The streamer acquired worldwide rights to the film, which was written and directed by Poe, and will distribute “Selah and The Spades” directly to its streaming platform. Amazon also plans to develop an original series based on the teen drama set in a boarding school. Poe will also write, direct and produce the series.
“I’m thrilled that ‘Selah and The Spades’ has found a home with Amazon Studios, and doubly excited to see the world of The Haldwell School expand and develop in the serial format,” Poe said in a statement. “I’d always hoped to work with a company that realized the multi-format potential of this fictional world, and truly we have found the ideal partners with Amazon.”

Amazon Studios has acquired worldwide rights to writer/director Tayarisha Poe’s feature film debut “Selah and the Spades,” which made its world premiere as a Next selection this past January at the Sundance Film Festival. Additionally, the streaming giant is developing an original series based on the teen drama, which Poe will write, direct, and produce, along with Lauren McBride, who also produced the film.
Set in the closed world of an elite Pennsylvania boarding school, the Haldwell, where the student body is run by five factions, the film stars a young cast of fresh new faces, including Lovie Simone as the titular Selah Summers. She’s joined by Celeste O’Connor, Jesse Williams, Gina Torres, Henry Hunter Hall, Evan Roe, and Jharrel Jerome, who is likely still basking in the afterglow of his first Emmy nomination for Netflix’s “When They See Us.”
