“They said you was hung!”
“They was right!”
Mel Brooks’ Blazing Saddles screens this Friday and Saturday nights (July 7th and 8th) at midnight at the Tivoli Theater as part of their ‘Reel Late at the Tivoli’ Midnight series.
I showed the condensed Super-8 version of Blazing Saddles, appropriately enough, at my Super-8 Politically Incorrect Movie Madness show a few years ago at The Way Out Club and there are enough N-words in the 18-minute edit alone to make Paula Dean blush, but damn, this movie just keeps getting funnier as it ages!
Blazing Saddles is my favorite Mel Brooks comedy. Yes, even more than Young Frankenstein – it’s hard to believe Brooks produced both yuk-fests the same year. I just watched his 1977 follow-up High Anxiety on 16mm last weekend for the first time since it was new and Yikes! – I see why it was a critical disaster – didn’t laugh once!

First up Is Mighty Joe Young (1949)
The producer –director team of Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. First up Is First Blood (1982)
First Blood was the original Rambo film before he became known as a one-man army as shown in the sequels, Sylvester Stallone plays Ex-Green Beret and Vietnam War veteran John Rambo who’s passing through a small town after learning of the death of a member of his unit, and all he wants is something to eat. One of the most anticipated episodes of The Flash this year had to be "Duet" with the frame of the story line being a musical. Ever since the two Glee graduates teamed up last year on Supergirl the idea of a musical episode had been in the works. "Duet" was a much needed change of pace even if you aren't into musicals. The past couple of weeks the characters of The Flash have dealt with some serious events and heavy emotions, so it was nice to see a change of pace. With Barry’s proposal to Iris being exposed as a falsehood, Wally being stuck in the Speed Force for a brief time period reliving the death of his mom, and Caitlin and Julian trying to figure out their relationship made it welcoming for an episode that was light hearted and made us able to smile at the end.

Dudley Moore’s (Oscar-nominated) greatest performance carries the heart-warming romantic comedy Arthur (1981) about a ridiculously wealthy man who does what he wants whenever he wishes, but lacks the happiness he craves. Arthur’s life looks up though when he meets waitress Linda (Liza Minnelli), but he’s already engaged to the rich Susan (Jill Eikenberry) so that’s a major problem since his rich granny threatens to cut him out of the will.

Southbound is yet another horror anthology from the people behind the V/H/S trilogy. However unlike that series of films, Southbound actually gets things right. Perfectly right.
Southbound opens and closes with Radio Silence’s The Way Out and The Way In (in that order). A book-ending tale that introduces us to two men on the run, being chased across the desert by ethereal, skeletal grim reapers from which there is no escape. Especially when the pair stop at a gas station… We return to the same tale for the closer, discovering why the pair are on the run and why they are being haunted. Radio Silence’s opener The Way Out really sets the tone for the rest of the film,...

In the new horror anthology Southbound, five tales merge to create one cohesive storyline through the back roads of hell. On the endless trail into unknown, hot southern depths, all of the characters involved in this Twilight Zone-esque collection of stories will be confronted with their sins in their own personal hells.
The directors involved in this anthology weren't just handed an assigned vignette and a deadline and positive thoughts by the person in charge. These filmmakers spent weeks and weeks working together on the script, intricately designing the story as a whole, and creating a flowing narrative, rather than coming up with an acceptable excuse to house five different stories in one film.
The result is an anthology so seamless, it's difficult to tell where one segment ends and another begins, making it feel less like a large group of people all trying to shout over one another,...

For those of you uninspired ramblers who have been searching for a horror anthology that truly revs your engines, Southbound is an inviting attraction along a road lined with many generic places to stop. From the minds of Roxanne Benjamin, David Bruckner, Patrick Horvath, and the Radio Silence collective come five tales of open-road horror set to the soothing voice of Larry Fessenden’s DJ narration, and the ride is surly a worthy one. The segments rarely skip a beat, and showcase the same drifting intrigue that’s created by a desolate stretch of highway that connects them all. Nothing good ever happens in the middle of nowhere, but this series of gleefully unfortunate events tends to argue otherwise with the help of some gruesome tricks, brainwashed minds, and a few skeletal demons worth a fright.
The film starts with a hellish car chase dubbed “The Way Out,” which follows...

Today is Vincent Price’s 104th Birthday! Price was born here in St. Louis on this date in 1911 and is the most iconic movie star to hail from our city. Price, who died October 25th 1993, was also a gourmand, author, stage actor, speaker, world-class art collector, raconteur, and all-around Renaissance man. Vincent Price was simply one of the most remarkable people of the 20th Century. Four years ago we had the opportunity to celebrate his 100th birthday and St. Louis was the place to do it. I teamed up with Cinema St. Louis to present Vincentennial, The Vincent Price 100th Birthday Celebration, an event that lasted through much of the Spring of 2011. The following year Vincentennial won two coveted Rondo Awards, one for “Best Fan Event” and a second for myself as “Monster Kid of the Year” for directing the event. The Rondo Awards are prestigious Fan Awards given out...

Bravest Warriors: Tales from the Holo John #1

One of the mainstays of the Bravest Warriors comics and cartoons is the Holo-John. It’s a private room in the Bravest Warriors’ hideout where you can enjoy a fun simulation of your choosing while going to the bathroom. It’s like the Holodeck in Star Trek: Tng‘s immature, yet creative cousin. Bravest Warriors: Tales from the Holo John is a special one-shot set entirely in this wonderful little room and shows its storytelling potential. The stories have their funny moments, bizarre bits (I will never unsee Mad Rupert’s drawing of Wallow in his undies.), and the best ones...

King The Detective And The Smugglers will screen at Super-8 Mummy Movie Madness Tuesday January 6th at The Way Out Club
Okay, technically I didn’t ‘discover’ it. I actually bought it off eBay and I guess it wasn’t really lost…but I thought it was! So that counts for something!

Will the movie version of Paradise Lost offer up the same parallel of our times as John Milton's poem?
Brilliant art anticipates the shape of things to come in a manner that embarrasses the predictariat of historians, politicians and journalists. Whether it was the early 20th century's embrace of surrealism that heralded the coming bloody, violent break with tradition or Marvin Gaye's first question of sociology, "What's Going On?", which foreshadowed a rainbow coalition politics that emerged in the decade after the album arrived, it's plain that art often gets there before life.
So what to make of the Hollywood remake of Milton's Paradise Lost, the epic 17th-century poem about humanity's strengths and weaknesses? Its central themes of the soul's struggle over good and wickedness and free will in the face of omniscient authority secured its place in the English canon. In honor of Halloween and the many fantastic events that are happening around St. Louis this week, we here at Destroy the Brain will be spotlighting a different Halloween themed event every day this week. St. Louis is a city that loves the haunting holiday, and what is better than joining in in the fun by partaking in one of these horror themed happenings.
Earlier this month, Destroy the Brain showed The Texas Chain Saw Massacre as part of its Late Nite Grindhouse program at the Hi-Pointe Theatre here in St. Louis, Missouri. The film still holds potency after 37 years. Now, Scott Ford is bringing John Dugan, the man who played Grandpa, to St. Louis for a glorious hootenanny called Texas Chainsaw Halloween Hootenanny!
Scott Ford runs one of the largest movie memorabilia businesses in the midwest and he can’t wait for everyone in the St. Louis area to meet Grandpa!

I’ve been collecting the condensed Super-8 Sound editions of movies for about 15 years now and am always thrilled when some odd title pops up for sale that I had no idea was ever released in the format. The Beast Must Die, The Klansman, and To The Devil A Daughter are a few of the titles that never appeared in the Castle Films (or any other) catalog, but I’ve managed to unearth, released on some obscure film labels (often in Europe – Grizzly, Star Crash, Hard Times, and Mandigo are other oddball titles I’ve found dubbed into German). I host the monthly Super-8 Movie Madness show at The Way Out Club here in St. Louis the first Tuesday of every month where I show about 14 of these films from my vast collection. The hard-drinking crowd of movie buffs always appreciates films with the cheesiest aesthetics and there are few movies cheesier than Astro Zombies.

Any film featuring either Christopher Lee or Boris Karloff is an instant must-see for horror fans. The two terror titans joined forces the first time in 1958′s Corridors Of Blood, a grimy graverobber/mad doctor opus that took place in 19th century England. Ten years later came their second and final collaboration, Curse Of The Crimson Cult (aka Curse Of The Crimson Altar or simply The Crimson Cult) and this time cult siren Barbara Steele, the reigning queen of horror, joined them as well. With this type of fright wattage, you’d expect Curse Of The Crimson Cult to be some sort of classic much-discussed by monster kids just for the cast alone (it’s even got Michael Gough!), but that’s not the case with this strange but confused brew of devil-worshipping, witches, creepy old mansions with secret passageways torture devices, and ritual sacrifices. It’s considered to be...

We’re celebrating one of Hollywood’s great tough guys and one of our favorite actors September 6th at The Way Out Club in St. Louis with Super-8 Lee Marvin Movie Madness.
Lee Marvin rose through the ranks of movie stardom as a character actor, delivering mostly villainous supporting turns in many films before finally graduating to leading roles. Regardless of which side of the law he was on however, he projected a tough-as-nails intensity and a two-fisted integrity which elevated even the slightest material. Born February 19, 1924, in New York City, Marvin quit high school to enter the Marine Corps and while serving in the South Pacific was badly wounded in battle when a machine gun nest shot off part of his buttocks and severed his sciatic nerve. He spent a year in recovery before returning to the U.S. where...

Only in the 1970.s could Hollywood have turned its attention to the subject of racism in the deep south and come up with something so jaw-dropping in it.s political incorrectness as The Klansman. On the surface the 1974 film is a serious depiction of the bigotry and the racial confrontations that tear apart an Alabama town in the 1960.s, but watching it today The Klansman comes off at times serious, laughable, meanspirited, sleazy, and racist. I.m sure the movie wasn’t meant to be racist, but it is filled with characters mouthing so many racist beliefs and committing so many racist crimes that the movie seems to gloat gleefully in its outrageous depiction of bigotry and delivers one ham-fisted,...

Tonight at 10pm at the Way Out is our Vincentennial edition of Super-8 Vincent Price Movie Madness. We’re starting at 10pm because there is a 7pm screening of Witchfinder General at brown Hall on the campus of Washington University that no Vincent Price fan in St. Louis will be missing. I’ve now added a special screening to the festivities at The Way Out Club. At 11:30pm, I’m showing a 16mm print of Dr Goldfoot And The Girl Bombs, Price’s 1966 collaboration with legendary director Mario Bava. This is a superb technicolor print of a movie generally considered one of Price’s worst but is actually a film that has aged into kitschy, campy fun. Dana Jung’s reassessment of the film he wrote a few weeks ago here at We Are Movie Geeks can be found Here.

We are now showing the 35mm print of Champagne For Caesar Thursday night (May 26th) at 9:15 after the screening of Witchfinder General at Brown Hall on the campus of Washington University. Cinema St. Louis will be showing Baron Of Arizona at the St. Louis International Film Festival in November. Super-8 Vincent Price Movie Madness is still playing at The Way Out Club Thursday night starting at 10pm and there will be a bonus element at that: a 16mm print of Dr. Goldfoot And The Girl Bombs (1966), a film considered by Price scholars to be his worst but one that is actually a campy, kitschy blast from the past. Dr. Goldfoot And The Girl Bombs will begin at 11:30 at The Way Out Club.
