Look, we all know that The Judges' Save is a crapshoot. Yes, it got us more quirky musicality from Casey Abrams and it allowed Jessica Sanchez to make it to the Finals, but how much gratitude should we show an innovation that also prolonged the "Idol" lives of Matt Giraud and Michael Lynche? I guess we should feel lucky that Sam Woolf has survived to participate in a theme that I'm sure is near-and-dear to his heart: '80s Night. Sam isn't the only "Idol" Finalist with a sketchy connection to the '80s. Actually, the total number of remaining contestants who drew breath in the '80s is a resounding "zero." So... This is gonna be fun! 8:00 p.m. Et. We begin with a reminder of last week's "drama," which strongly suggests that if Sam had gone home, this would be '70s Week. This week featured David Cook as a mentor.

Poor Sam Woolf. He received the lowest number of votes Thursday night and wound up being saved by the "American Idol" judges in a dramatic confetti shower that's usually reserved for the season's ultimate winner. But while Sam is busy celebrating his second chance victory, it's time for a reality check: Ever since the Judges' Save was introduced in Season Eight, no one that's been saved has gone on to win the show. -Break- Prior to Sam, a total of four singers were saved from the execution chamber. In Season 8, Matt Giraud was saved in Top 7 Week and was then eliminated for good two weeks later. In Season 9, Michael Lynche was saved in Top 9 Week and wound up lasting five more weeks. In Season 10, Casey Abrams was saved in Top 11 Week and was then eliminated five weeks later. And in Season 11, Jessica Sanchez was saved in Top 7 Week and made...

There are four weeks and four contestants left on Season 12 of American Idol — but it won’t be the Judges’ Save that prevents the competiton from ending before the scheduled May 16 finale.

There've been complaints that last night's American Idol, themed around the hits and performances of past Idol winners, was old-fashioned and schmaltzy. Hey, morons: That's why I watchAmerican Idol. I want ancient, Wayne Newton-y performances from Mormon teenagers in pain. I want the new Rosemary Clooney to woo me in a collared denim dress that her great-grandmother weaved. I want singers who pick songs by Kenny Rogers or Alannah Myles to feel "naughty." Bring me the home-schooled!
I loved last night's episode, even when truly awful songs like Ruben Studdard's "Flying Without Wings" threatened to curbstomp us with hopelessness. For me, ranking the top 10 was a cinch -- though apparently I disagree with most of you about how interesting Angela Miller is. Guys, her emotions range from "happy" to "happy, but quiet sometimes." Come on.

Well, that was a mediocre night of brooding dudes. Remember when I told last night's ladies to "matter more"? Turns out the gents needed the same memo, with one notable exception: The fabulous, high-heeled mess known as J'da, who announced he was "representing the gays" after his eye-popping, nutty, floor-clutching performance of "Rumour Has It," rocked me, confused me, and ultimately felt... too insane for this universe. We'll get to that in a bit. J'da's performance, I mean, not the universe where he can live and thrive. That's a couple millennia off.
Just like Wednesday's initial Vegas night, we saw 10 performers croon (all dudes this time), and five earned the right to stay while the other five were eliminated. Let's rank these 10 and sort out our feelings for years afterward with suburban therapist Kara DioGuardi. I assume that's what's she's up to recently.

New York attorney James H. Freeman has submitted a letter to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in which he asks for permission to sue "American Idol" and Fox on behalf of nine contestants, claiming a racist plot to boost ratings, reports TMZ.
The nine contestants are Corey Clark (Season 2), Jaered Andrews (Season 2), Donnie Williams (Season 3), Terrell and Derrell Brittenum (Season 5), Thomas Daniels (Season 6), Akron Watson (Season 6), Ju'Not Joyner (Season 8) and Chris Golightly (Season 9).

Freeman claims he became suspicious of "Idol" when Jermaine Jones was kicked off the show in 2012, during Season 11. Producers claimed it was because Jones failed to inform them about outstanding warrants for his arrest. Freeman alleges that "Idol" has been conducting a "cruel and inhumane" scheme to exploit black contestants for ratings.

Two years after appearing on "American Idol" as a finalist, Michael Lynche is gearing up for the release of his self-titled album on August 14. In the midst of recording his forthcoming opus, Lynche welcomed the birth of his second child, Kingston Michael, and more recently debuted on Billboard’s Adult R&B charts for his single “Who’s Gonna Love You More.”
The Florida native spoke with the Huffington Post on his new album, his 90 pound weight loss and fatherhood.
How has the recording process been for your debut album?
It’s been really amazing. My label, Big3 Records, were really supportive of me making the record that I wanted to make. There was no time limit on when I needed to have things done by. American Idol's drop from Top 6 to Top 5 is always pivotal. The show enters a sudden death phase, every song choice is critical, and every remaining wannabe becomes a candidate for the crown. What I'm trying to say: The losers should be gone by now (unless we're talking about season nine, in which Aaron Kelly, Michael Lynche, and unfortunate winner Lee DeWyze still remained at the final 5). This makes the question of last night's eliminated contestant a vital one: Was it Joshua Ledet, the dancing R&B child whose best days are probably behind him? What about Elise Testone, the cool Rickie Lee Jones proxy who's been waiting to wilt for weeks? And what of Phillip Phillips, who still hasn't hit the bottom three yet? Scroll down to see who the sixth place sistah/brothah is.

If "American Idol" was decided by whoever received the most standing ovations from the judges, Joshua Ledet would have this year's competition in the bag.
Ledet racked up two more standing O's from the judges on Wednesday's (April 25) "Idol," which found the contestants singing two songs apiece: one from Queen, and another of their own choosing.
That brought Ledet's unofficial standing ovation season total to 12 — that figure according to Skylar Laine, who ribbed him backstage for receiving a dozen standing O's over the course of the season.
Ledet first got a rise out of the judges with his version of "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," which caused Jennifer Lopez to ask, "Is it bad for me to say the Joshua part of the show...

There’s this weird part of the week — from Friday morning till Monday evening — when not a single major TV network airs a reality singing competition. It’s terrible, I know, but it also gives me a lot of time to ponder American Idol history. (Everyone does this in their free time, yes?) And my latest flight of Idol fancy got me mulling this question: Was Season 11′s Top 10 the strongest — top to bottom — in show history? Let’s examine:
For starters, I’d automatically rule out the five seasons with three or more Top 10 contestants who probably wouldn’t have outlasted Season 11′s No.

Former American Idol contestant Michael Lynche and his wife Christa have welcomed their second child. Lynche famously became a father for the first time while he was competing on the ninth season of American Idol in 2010. When daughter Laila Rose arrived on Jan. 13, 2010, Lynche cried with joy over the phone — and on television.

At Reality Rocks 2011, the "American Idol" panel touched on a lot of different topics; highlights can be found here. But we thought one subject that came up deserved to be singled out - the subject of blogs.
Moderator Shirley Halperin asked Season 9 contestants Didi Benami, Katie Stevens, Michael Lynche, Tim Urban and Paige Miles if they read the blogs (which they are advised not to do) and how it affected them.
Tim Urban, who blogs were not particularly kind to during their season, says, "You realize that the blogs are there just to pick apart your performance. They're not there to say what you did well, they're just there to point out what you did bad."
We aren't sure we totally agree with that assessment. When we recap the show here at Zap2it, we try to mention the good and the bad. As far as Tim Urban goes, we did criticize him quite often,...

Big Mike, on seeing the judges for the first time in auditions: "I remember thinking Simon was pretty. He was so pretty. They were like cartoon characters, they were all so pretty."
Didi, on keeping her inclusion in hte Top 24 a secret: "The only people that knew were my brother and my mom before the show aired. My dad didn't know, he can't keep a secret."

Two contestants on American Idol will be sent home tonight. The judges save is no longer in play. The stress could not be more intense. Why am I typing like Ryan Seacrest talks? Why do we do anything in this world?

First, the good news for Casey Abrams. Even if voters are on the fence about the emotional bass player, the judges clearly love him and were unequivocal in deploying their once-a-season save on Thursday night's "American Idol."
Now, the bad news: It's probably still not enough to carry him to the winner's circle. If "Idol" history is any indication, the save is mostly a postponement of the inevitable. It helped season eight's Matt Giraud (a wild-card pick to begin with) when he faced elimination in the top seven, but did him no good when he was booted just two weeks later in the top five. Fast-forward to last season, when Michael Lynche faced the chopping block in week nine. The judges busted out the save again, which kept...

American Idol contestant and popular favorite Casey Abrams was strangely absent from the results show last week, although it hardly mattered because he was nowhere near being in danger of getting cut. His health, however, has the show’s producers concerned – he’s been in the hospital twice this season and it’s now affecting his ability to participate fully in the show.
Casey has been having what he called “stomach problems” – reports are saying that he actually has ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory intestinal condition. He has had a blood transfusion and is said to be resting and feeling better. Hopefully he’ll be in good form for his performance next week, as he’s one of the top favorites to win.

Ian Benardo, whose audition for American Idol in 2007 was cut short when when it became obvious he had no talent whatsoever, has been spending his effort trying to get a settlement from the show. Benardo claims that American Idol producers told him to “gay it up for the cameras,” which he says he finds offensive now, but apparently he was all for it at the time when he thought he still had a chance at being on the show.
Benardo’s first suit was for $300 million (yes, really). When that failed, he sued again for only $100 million (bargain!). Now that the second suit has been thrown out of court, he’s going back a third time… and only suing for $5 million.

"American Idol" is here and Zap2it has been taking a stroll down memory lane to re-evaluate the previous nine seasons.
We're breaking it down into four categories: Best Performance, Worst Performance, Most Underrated Idol and most Overrated Idol. At the end, we will decide how the season stacks up against the rest, rating it as great, good, or not-so-good.
We've looked back at Season 1 (yay Kelly!), Season 2 (aww, Clay and Ruben!), the black hole that was Season 3, one of our favorite Top 2 in Season 4, and Soul Patrol-ed Season 5. We took a look back at beatboxin' Season 6, the David vs. David finale of Season 7 and the game-changing season of Glambert.
Now let's look at Simon's last season.
Season 9 contestants in order of elimination:
Lacey Brown
Paige Miles
Didi Benami
Andrew Garcia
Katie Stevens
Tim Urban
Siobhan Magnus
Aaron Kelly

American Idol, returning for its tenth season Wednesday night, finds itself at a crossroads. The Simon Cowell Era is ended - along with the Year of Ellen DeGeneres and the relatively brief reign of Kara DioGuardi. Randy Jackson is the sole remaining judge on a new panel featuring rocker Steven Tyler and queenly pop star-actress Jennifer Lopez. There are some big questions for Idol: How crucial was Cowell's barbed intelligence? And how can the show, which is the most powerful reality program of all, recapture its vitality? You may remember - or just as likely may not - how...

The United Center in Chicago played host to American Idol (TV)'s top ten Saturday night, with a hometown boy at the helm. Winner Lee DeWyze, who hails from suburban Mt. Prospect, Il. topped the list of Season 9 finalists who sang their way through a series of individual and group performances that had Idol fans chanting for their seasonal faves. The show followed it's traditional countdown format beginning with contestant number ten and working its way up to the winner. Opening the show was Didi Benami, whose second song, "Terrified" by Katharine McPhee out-did her first, Kyler England's "Lay it on Me." Andrew Garcia, a sentimental favorite during the show's run, received a warm reception from his camp as he stylistically toyed around with Paula Abdul's "Straight Up." At number 8 was Katie Stevens who wowed the boy crowd with a black rubber-like mini-dress and stiletto black boots. The raven-haired...

Always a bit on the flamboyant side, Adam Lambert decided to enjoy an on stage snog during a performance this weekend.
The American Idol star was performing a set at the “Festival des Montgolfieres” in St-Jean, Quebec, when he locked lips with his seriously hot bass player Tommy Joe Ratliff.
It seems no coincidence that it was also Tommy who Adam chose to snog during his famous American Music Awards performance.
No word yet on whether the pair are dating, or if this was just a little something to spice up Lambert’s routine but one thing is for sure….it has gotten him noticed again!

Los Angeles — Friday night (August 13) at the Staples Center saw the return of all top 10 "American Idol" season-nine finalists to Los Angeles for the American Idols Live! Tour. While part of the center was closed, the arena was only a little over half full by the time the show started around 7:45 pm. However, despite the empty seats, die-hard "Idol" fans showed their enthusiasm with homemade signs and t-shirts.
First to take the stage was Didi Benami, decked out in a shimmery top and her blonde locks reminiscent of Taylor Swift. After her first song, "Lay It on Me," Benami drew cheers when she shouted, "Los Angeles! Welcome to American Idol Live! How's everyone doing tonight?" She then strapped on...

If the top 10 contestants on this year's "American Idol" had anything to do with it, Harry Connick Jr. would be the man to take Simon Cowell's place next season.
Or three of the top 10, anyway. Parade magazine asked the 10 stars of the current "Idol" tour for their opinions on who should replace Simon, and Connick -- the mentor for the top five during Frank Sinatra week -- got the most votes. "Most" in this case, however, means three: Michael Lynche, Katie Stevens and Aaron Kelly say Connick would be the best choice.
The other most-talked-about possible replacement, Bret Michaels, won the endorsement of two finalists -- Casey James, who performed with Michaels on the season finale, and Crystal Bowersox. She also wonders, though, if "maybe they could bring Paula [Abdul] back."
The other choices were, let's say, a little more outside the box. Lee DeWyze thinks Arnold Schwarzenegger would be "funny" (and he will,...

And also to see all of the top 10 Idols perform for the "Good Morning America" Summer Concert Series on Friday (July 9).
Crystal was the first one to perform, singing Janis Joplin's "Piece of My Heart" while strumming her guitar, of course. She did the song justice despite the slight spray of rain.

American Idol star Adam Lambert has revealed his pre-show routine for his Glam nation tour.
The ‘If I Had You’ singer, is currently touring America, though he will be coming to Blightly this autumn and he told MTV that he likes to gear up by doing 20 minutes of cardio before all of his shows.
“I never used to be one to do any sort of ritual before I performed and just recently – at the start of this tour – I decided to start coming up with a routine,” he explained.
“It’s really helped me. I exercise, I do like a cardio thing. If I’m in a hotel with a treadmill I either run for 20 minutes or I get on a stationary bike for 20 minutes. It makes you feel good, it gets the endorphins going. It also kind of helps warm up the voice. Then then I do a vocal warm-up before the show.

We’ve all wondered about this since the day we learned Jake and Vienna weren’t intimate… is Jake gay? Vienna claims to have the answer!
