But there’s no such pathos in the film, or adequate frisson. As an account of the Occupation, this has more in keeping with the soporific "Charlotte Gray" than, say, "The Army of Shadows." British director Saul Dibb and co-writer Matt Charman have fused the novellas, focussing on the slow-burning, forbidden love affair between a Frenchwoman in an occupied town outside Paris, and the German officer billeted in her home. It opens in 1940, in the fictional Bussy. Lucille Angellier (Michelle Williams) is a timid young woman whose husband is a prisoner of war, and in whose absence she lives under the thumb of her domineering mother-in-law. A joyless widow and uncompromising landowner, Madame Angellier (Kristin Scott Thomas) forces Lucile to accompany her as she drives around the countryside squeezing every last centime of rent from her struggling tenants. The arrival in town of a convoy of refugees from Paris, followed by a regiment of Germans,...

Exclusive: Discovery Channel is putting the finishing touches on the cast for its first original scripted program, six-hour miniseries Klondike. I’ve learned that Game Of Thrones‘ Richard Madden, Augustus Prew (Charlie St. Cloud), Abbie Cornish (RoboCop), Ian Hart (Luck), Johnny Simmons (The Perks Of Being A Wallflower), Connor Leslie (Chained), Tim Roth and Tim Blake Nelson are set or in negotiations to join Chris Cooper in the project, produced by Scott Free Prods., Discovery Entertainment One and Nomadic Pictures. Assembling a cast of established actors for Klondike was important for Discovery as it enters the scripted arena. Based on Charlotte Gray’s novel Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich In The Klondike, the mini tells the story of six strangers and their collective fight for survival and wealth in a small, frontier town in the remote Klondike. Directed by Simon Cellan Jones from a script by Paul Scheuring, Josh Goldin and Rachel Abramowitz,...

Discovery Channel is jumping into the increasingly popular basic cable scripted programming arena, with the mini-series "Klondike" and they've set Oscar-winning actor Chris Cooper to co-star.
Based on Charlotte Gray's novel "Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike," the mini will follow six strangers in a remote small town battling the environment and a collection of dangers characters as they search for gold in the 1890s.
Paul Scheuring ("Prison Break") is the primary writer and executive producers include Ridley Scott.
Cooper -- who won an Oscar for "Adaptation." and will soon be seen in "August: Osage County" opposite Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts -- will take on the role of Father Judge.
If the "Klondike" concept gives off a faint "Hatfields & McCoys" vibe, it's probably completely intentional. History's Emmy-winning miniseries set ratings records when it premiered last summer.
"Klondike" doesn't have an air date yet, but it's...

Oscar-winning actor Chris Cooper has taken the lead role in "Klondike" (that's a working title), the first-ever scripted miniseries from Discovery Channel. The drama, which was announced last year, is not, alas, about the invention of a delicious frozen dessert, but is instead adapted from Charlotte Gray's book "Gold Diggers: Striking It Rich in the Klondike," about six of the people who traveled out to a remote region of northwest Canada as part of the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1800s. "Klondike" is a co-production between Discovery, eOne and Nomadic Pictures in association with Scott Free Television. Like other networks who've built their brand on nonfiction programming, including History ("Hatfields & McCoys") and National Geographic ("Seal Team Six: The Raid on Osama Bin Laden"), Discovery's making a first foray into the realms of scripted TV here and clearly aiming for prestige. The...

Discovery is hoping to strike gold twice. The network announced Tuesday that it's producing its first-ever scripted miniseries, with a premise quite familiar to current ratings champ Gold Rush.
