A dozen years have gone by since the release of director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s prequel to John Carpenter’s 1982 classic The Thing (watch the prequel Here). Looking back at the project now, van Heijningen has some regrets over the way the special effects were handled on the film, and that he was never able to make the sequel they had plans for.
Directed by van Heijningen from a screenplay written by Eric Heisserer and based on the short story Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell (using the pen name Don A. Stuart), The Thing 2011 has the following synopsis: After Norwegian researchers discover an alien ship buried in the ice, paleontologist Kate Lloyd joins the team at the isolated Arctic outpost to investigate. She finds an organism that appears to have perished in the crash eons ago but, in fact, is about to awake. Freed from its icy prison,...

2011.s The Thing is an unnecessary CGI-slick prequel to John Carpenter.s 1982 classic sci-fi/horror film The Thing. It isn.t horrible and does several things right, but is easily forgettable as soon as the end credits roll. Based on John W. Campbell Jr. short story "Who Goes There?," the prequel was directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and written by Eric Heisserer. The film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen, Eric Christian Olsen, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Paul Braunstein, Trond Espen Seim, Kim Bubbs, Jørgen Langhelle, Jan Gunnar Røise, Stig Henrik Hoff, Kristofer Hivju, Jo Adrian Haavind, and Carsten Bjørnlund. Heijningen and company do an excellent job of tying the prequel to Carpenter.s film (a fire axe placed...

The first trailer for The Thing adds some tension to this film series. A prequel to the 1982 film, this latest movie focuses on the Norwegian scientists from the first film, who had their camp overrun by an alien species. The mystery of this camp and the hostile takeover will be covered in some detail with director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.'s latest film. Have a look at the tense trailer below, which shows/does not show an alien doppelganger, who has a strong appetite for human scientists.

Universal pulled their Thing Prequel from its 29th April slot to allow Fast and Furious pole position (sorry for the racing car pun). The reason given was for ‘additional photography’ because apparently something ‘character development’ needed clearing up.
Now it’s been announced The Thing will be released on 14th October, 2011 – just in time for Halloween! Although Paranormal Activity 3 has stamped its authority on that period, too. There was at one point a fear the movie wouldn’t see the light of day at all in 2011 but now fears can be allied. We will get to see it next year!

We're all waiting patiently for more news to start coming out regarding The Thing prequel, and while we try to remain optimistic our fears just keep creeping up on us, no matter how much we're told things are going to turn out good.

One of horror fans' biggest concerns about the upcoming prequel to The Thing from director Matthijs van Heijningen, Jr., has been whether the effects will be mostly practical or mostly CGI. During a panel at this weekend's New York Comic Con, van Heijningen allayed fears somewhat by addressing that very issue.
According to the Dread Central folks on the scene, he told the audience, "There are a Lot of practical effects in this movie. I owed it to Carpenter not to CGI it up."
Good news indeed! Keep it here for more on The Thing and the 2010 Nycc as it comes in.

Our first look at The Thing prequel has arrived in the form of stills and behind the scenes pics courtesy of Bd. Not surprisingly we get a lot of parkas and flame throwers and little else, but with Ron Moore behind the pen I'd say I'm intrigued even though he doesn't have tons of theatrical experience.

"Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. Eight new images have been released for the The Thing, prequel/remake to the 1982 original – I’m still not sure which! The film takes place in a remote outpost where a group of scientists find themselves under attack from an evil, extraterrestial force – much like the original then!
The film is directed by unknown Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. and stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Dennis Storhøi, Trond Espen Seim, Jørgen Langhelle, Eric Christian Olsen, Stig Henrik Hoff, Jan Gunnar Røise, Kristofer Hivju and Jo Adrian Haavind. The images feature both still from the movie and a sneaky look behind the scenes, take a look at them all below, courtesy of Bloody Disgusting:
