J.A. Bayona’s Netflix epic Society of the Snow swept Saturday night’s Platino Awards, picking up a total of six trophies including the top award of the night for best Ibero-American fiction film.
Bayona’s film follows the tragic events that take place after Uruguayan Air Force flight 571, chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashes on a glacier in the heart of the Andes in 1972. Only 16 of the 45 passengers ultimately made it out alive as a handful of others perished on the mountain during the 72 days from the time of the crash until rescuers arrived.
Bayona also made his way to the stage to accept a trophy for best director, and his film’s haul also included best male performance for star Enzo Vogrincic, best editing for Jaume Marti and Andres Gil, best cinematography for Pedro Luque, and best sound for Oriol Tarragó, Marc Orts and Jorge Adrados.

“City of Dreams,” an upcoming drama about a young Mexican boy who gets smuggled across the border, is lining up some heavy-hitting producers as Roadside Attractions looks to debut the film over Labor Day.
Sean Wolfington, the executive producer of “Sound of Freedom” and most recently “Cabrini”; Luis Fonsi, a five-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, musician and producer; and songwriter Linda Perry have joined the producing team for the film. It’s a group that also includes Oscar-nominated “Roma” star Yalitza Aparicio. In addition, Fonsi will record an original song for the film, which will be written by Perry. “City of Dreams,” which marks Mohit Ramchandani’s feature directorial debut, will open in theaters nationwide on Aug. 30.
The film looks at how the young man’s dreams of becoming a soccer star are shattered when he’s smuggled into the U.S. and sold to a sweatshop in downtown Los Angeles.

Following the huge financial disappointment of 2022’s Babylon, Damien Chazelle states that he’s not even sure if his next script will get made.
Damien Chazelle is at an interesting point in his career. Up until 2022’s Babylon, everything the director’s previous three films had earned critical plaudits or made lots of cash. In the case of Whiplash and La La Land, those two films did both and solidified Chazelle’s reputation as one of a handful of directors set to revive Hollywood’s output and lead a new generation of American filmmakers.
However, the last few years have seen something of a bump in the road for Chazelle.
Following his Oscar for Best Director in the wake of La La Land, Chazelle has made 2018’s First Man and then 2022’s Babylon. The former didn’t exactly set the box office on fire but it did enough, and picked up some critical praise.

Director Damien Chazelle became the youngest recipient of the Oscar for Best Director when he won the coveted award for his musical romance La La Land. He has helmed multiple critical darlings such as Whiplash and First Man, which have given him the status of a modern-day auteur due to certain directorial trademarks that he employs in his films.
While he had an amazing record at the box office and during Awards season with the above-mentioned films, he seemed to have missed the mark with his last film Babylon. Starring Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, and Diego Calva, the film was a box office disaster. Chazelle recently mentioned that he might not be able to make his next film due to Babylon’s failure.

Any movie starring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie is expected to be a box-office hit considering their reputation in the Hollywood entertainment industry. Pitt might have started his acting career much before Robbie, but the actress has proved her proficiency as a performer time and time again.
Despite the power-packed performances of the ensemble cast featuring Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie among others, Damien Chazelle’s black comedy drama – Babylon tanked at the box office. This has cast doubt on the director’s future as he recently admitted that he might not get a budget as big as Babylon for his next project.

Exclusive: Oscar winning Nomadland producer Peter Spears has optioned Mike Nichols: A Life, the 2021 biography of the director by Mark Harris, for development as a dramatic feature film.
The planned adaptation of the book, a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist, will not be a cradle-to-grave biography but will focus on a young Nichols as he journeys from Broadway to Hollywood to make his first film, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966), depicting his high-stakes collaboration with the film’s two married stars, Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
Spears will develop the film for his production company, Cor Cordium. His other producing credits include the Oscar-winning Call Me by Your Name (2017), Bones and All (2022), and On Swift Horses, with Jacob Elordi, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Diego Calva, and Will Poulter, which will open later this year. Harris is also the author of Pictures at a Revolution (2008) and the World War II filmmaking history...

In Hollywood, they say you’re only as good as your last credit.
Damien Chazelle is weighing what that means for him following the box office failure of his big-budget film Babylon starring Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt and Diego Calva. Made for a reported $80 million before marketing costs, the Paramount Pictures release opened to a disastrous $3.6 million before topping out at $15.3 million domestic. With international grosses, it finished at $63.4 million worldwide.
“Certainly, in financial terms, Babylon didn’t work at all,” the Oscar-winning filmmaker told Ben Mankiewicz during an interview on his podcast, Talking Pictures. “You try to not have that affect what you’re doing creatively, but, at some level, it can’t help but affect it. But maybe that’s Ok? I have [a] very mixed mind about it. Who knows? Maybe I won’t be able to get this one made. I have no idea. We’ll have to wait and see.

About a decade ago, Damien Chazelle was Hollywood’s hottest young filmmaker. His indie hit “Whiplash” made tens of millions of dollars in profit and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. He followed it up with “La La Land,” which earned hundreds of millions in profit and made him the youngest Best Director Oscar winner ever at age 32. He was riding high. But what goes up must come down.
His next film, 2018’s “First Man,” underperformed at the box office and the Oscars. And 2022’s “Babylon” was an outright flop, losing money, winning no Academy Awards, and earning mixed reviews from critics and a fair amount of derision for its three-hour runtime and over-the-top spectacle – this despite a loyal hive of fans who remain convinced it will age like a lost masterpiece. Regardless, it was the kind of exercise in excess that can derail a director...

Oscar winner Damien Chazelle confirmed on the “Talking Pictures” podcast (via World of Reel) that he is currently at work writing his new movie, which would mark his follow-up to 2022’s “Babylon.” As many cinephiles know, “Babylon” was one of the biggest studio disasters in recent memory. Made for a budget in the $80 million range, the Paramount-backed Hollywood epic flopped with only $15 million at the domestic box office and $63 million worldwide despite A-list star power from Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie and Chazelle himself coming off his Oscar-winning “La La Land.”
“I’ve been head in the sand. I’ve been sort of busy writing. So I’ll get a real taste of how it’s changed or not [since ‘Babylon’] once I get to finish this script and try to actually get it made,” Chazelle said on the podcast when asked if his relationship to Hollywood has changed after the flop.

How does one repay a team of producers for launching its highest grossing film of all time? Give them the key to the studio — literally.
On Monday, “Barbie” producers, LuckyChap’s Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara inked a first-look deal at Warner Bros., which distributed the $1.4 billion-grossing movie. So, to celebrate, Warner Bros. Pictures Group Co-Chairs and CEO Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca decided to resurrect an old tradition, started by WB co-founder Jack Warner.
“Every once in a while, when a significant piece of talent signed a deal with the studio, he presented that company, that talent, with a key to the studio,” De Luca said as he and Abdy raised a toast to the trio. “We are so delighted to have our first key to our studio be given to LuckyChap.”

Before Margot Robbie was Barbie, she was Harley Quinn, Naomi Lapaglia, Tonya Harding, and many more characters. There's no doubt Robbie loves her job as an actor, and while tackling the role of an iconic children's toy wasn't initially on her career bucket list, it's clear she's happy she took a chance with the role.
A month before the highly anticipated July 2023 release of "Barbie," Robbie spoke to Vogue about how playing the role never even crossed her mind. "It wasn't that I ever wanted to play Barbie, or dreamt of being Barbie, or anything like that," she explained. "This is going to sound stupid, but I really didn't even think about playing Barbie until years into developing the project."
And while "Barbie" might arguably be Robbie's most hyped-up movie in her career so far, it's by no means the only role she's slayed. Take a look back at Robbie's best movies below.

Babylon is a movie written and directed by Damien Chazelle (First Man) starring Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt.
Babylon is a movie which from its failure in the box office recalls the echoes of Intolerance (1915), in which they built those sets with elephants that were so grandiose, in a film making style of another era and an impossible dream, disconcerting, ambitious and almost orgiastic spirit.
About the Movie

Hollywood actors and writers may be on the picket line, due to the many issues they have with various studios and networks, but they can’t really say that all streamers aren’t reporting how their shows and movies are faring. That’s exactly what Netflix has been doing each and every week with the Top 10 charts for the week of July 10, giving a detailed report on its current films and series, as “The Lincoln Lawyer” took the top spot for the latter and the sci-fi sequel “Bird Box Barcelona” entered the charts.
We’ll begin with the latter, since “Bird Box Barcelona” is the sequel to one of Netflix’s biggest hits, 2018’s “Bird Box” starring Sandra Bullock, the streamer’s fourth most-watched feature film ever. In this case, as the title implies, the post-apocalyptic action has been moved to Spain, and thusly, it charted on the non-English film...

Bird Box, a Netflix original released in 2018 and featuring Sandra Bullock, presents a world haunted by an unseen entity that poses a dire threat to humanity. Those who catch even a glimpse of this entity succumb to its influence, leading them to take their own lives. The film delves into profound themes centered around human emotions and the inner demons that reside within us all. The entity, in a sense, amplifies these inner conflicts to a heightened degree, driving individuals to the brink of self-destruction.
Amidst the chaos, a group of people emerges who, for reasons we are not yet aware of, remain immune to the entity’s powers. However, they mistakenly perceive the entity as a supernatural being deserving of worship. Within this group, an individual named Gary stands out. Unlike the others, Gary could walk outside without the need for blindfolds, seemingly unaffected by the sinister force. In a disturbing turn,...

This review has a mild Bird Box: Barcelona spoiler.
Is Bird Box a movie franchise? More precisely, is Bird Box essentially a shared cinematic universe? Netflix obviously thinks so, as this weekend’s Bird Box: Barcelona acts as both a spinoff and a naked bit of franchise world-building after the original Bird Box movie took streaming subscribers by storm… for a couple of weeks in December 2018, at any rate. Yet I might argue that it’s unclear whether that film scored with audiences because of its grindhouse-adjacent premise or simply due to it being a high-concept movie starring Sandra Bullock that was released during the doldrums of a holiday season.
Since then we’ve seen a lot of Netflix thrillers led by movie stars taking a streaming paycheck, and few have had the impact of Bird Box. Maybe that’s why the film’s ostensible sequel is trying to do the same thing again,...

Five years ago seems aeons in an era so disrupted by Covid. So it comes as a surprise to realize that the original screen “Bird Box” arrived a full 14 months or so in advance of pandemic restrictions — becoming an early Netflix pop-culture phenomenon before lockdown made that sort of thing a regular occurrence. Susanne Bier’s film of Josh Malerman’s sci-fi horror novel was intriguing and suspenseful enough, even if its emphasis on psychological drama over thrills made for a somewhat unlikely breakout hit.
Inevitably, if belatedly, there’s now a follow-up — but not an adaptation of Malerman’s own print sequel, which continued the travails of the character played by Sandra Bullock. Instead, “Bird Box Barcelona” is a “parallel story” set on another continent entirely. Written and directed by Alex and David Pastor, whose prior genre efforts “The Last Days” (2013) and “Carriers” (2009) both had similar basic premises, it...

Bird Box Barcelona, Netflix’s follow-up to the 2018 hit Bird Box, operates under the assumption that viewers are caught up to speed on the monstrous, unseen entities that rendered the world into a post-apocalyptic dystopia. Writer/Directors Álex Pastor and David Pastor bypass retreading the familiar invasion story beats to instead jump straight into character introductions against a backdrop already torn asunder. While 2018’s feature grapples with motherhood, Bird Box Barcelona explores grief, religion, and salvation. Its ambition in themes fascinates even when its execution struggles.
An opening scene introduces dad Sebastián (Mario Casas) having a touching moment with daughter Anna (Alejandra Howard) as they roller skate in an empty gym. It’s short-lived as the pair gear up with goggles and prepare for a blind trek to safety. The hostile strangers encountered shortly after signal a city deeply entrenched in and familiar with the creatures that have decimated the world.

Plot: After a mysterious force decimates the world’s population, Sebastian must navigate his own survival journey through the desolate streets of Barcelona. As he forms uneasy alliances with other survivors and they try to escape the city, an unexpected and even more sinister threat grows.
Review: Released eight months after John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place, Bird Box became a hit for Netflix. In the five years since Susanne Bier’s film debuted, author Josh Malerman has penned a sequel novel while a film follow-up has been in development. The first of multiple global spin-offs, Bird Box Barcelona continues the tale of supernatural entities that force people to commit grisly suicide. Existing in the same post-apocalyptic universe as the Sandra Bullock-led hit film, Bird Box Barcelona manages to weave a distinct story while unveiling new details about the monstrous beings by taking the story in an unexpected direction.

A new city gets to experience the horrors of Bird Box in the first official trailer for Bird Box Barcelona, a spin-off sequel to the 2018 post-apocalyptic thriller film. While bodies are falling from the sky and people are flooding public transportation trying to escape to safety, that familiar sense of unease that defined the original, which starred Sandra Bullock, begins to creep back in.

"There are worse things than the creatures." Netflix has revealed the main official trailer for the Bird Box Barcelona movie (also known as Blindly in Spanish). It will be available to watch in just a few more weeks. The Netflix Spain production tells another story within the same post-apocalyptic people-go-kill-themselves universe as the first Bird Box in 2018. After a mysterious force decimates the world's population by causing all who "see" it to suddenly take their lives, Sebastian and his daughter Anna must navigate their journey of survival through the desolate streets of Barcelona. As they form an uneasy alliance with other survivors and make their way toward a safe haven, a threat more sinister than unseen creatures grows. This stars Mario Casas, Georgina Campbell, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Patrick Criado, Diego Calva Hernández, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo de Castro, Michelle Jenner, and Leonardo Sbaraglia. Really looks like this'll be much better than the original film.

The second teaser trailer for Netflix’s Bird Box spinoff, Bird Box Barcelona, reveals much more of the terror the citizens of Barcelona are feeling as the creatures launch their attack. The premise remains the same as the original film – cover your eyes and never ever look at the creatures – but the setting switches to show how the world’s dealing with these bizarre beasts.
Bird Box starring Oscar winner Sandra Bullock premiered in December 2018, and the spinoff will debut on Netflix on July 14, 2023. Goya award winner Mario Casas (No matarás) leads the cast of the spinoff, starring Georgina Campbell, Alejandra Howard, Naila Schuberth, Diego Calva, and Patrick Criado.
In addition, Lola Dueñas, Gonzalo De Castro, Michelle Jenner, and Leonardo Sbaraglia also star.
Álex Pastor and David Pastor penned the screenplay and co-directed. Dylan Clark, Chris Morgan, Núria Valls, Adrián Guerra, Josh Malerman, and Ryan Lewis produced the post-apocalyptic thriller.

Five years after the original "Bird Box" became an absolute sensation on Netflix, we're finally getting a follow-up. While it's not a proper sequel, it is more of a spin-off taking place elsewhere in the world. In this case, Spain, which is why the forthcoming movie is aptly titled "Bird Box Barcelona." That also has a nice alliterative ring to it. But that's about the only thing about this movie that looks nice, as it seems absolutely chaotic and tense.
This appears to be going with a very similar conceit as the original film, with survivors trying to avoid eye contact with the mysterious beings at the center of this disaster at all costs. It's a new group of people in an entirely new location. What will those new elements bring to the table? Let's have a look-see.

In today's news of slightly unnecessary projects, Netflix is reviving its hit original film "Bird Box" with a sequel-extension film called "Bird Box Barcelona." You read that right, we're getting another "Bird Box" film, but seemingly one that is simply adjacent to, and not a continuation of, the events of the original. Interesting.
Netflix debuted a one-minute teaser trailer for the new film — which was announced back in March 2021 — and it gives us a glimpse into a similar event as the 2018 film, only in Europe this time. There is chaos in major cities, and folks turn to obscuring their sight in the outside world in order to obtain shelter. Again, it's very much a global repositioning of the events of the first film, however, it does seem like this new story will have some of its own twists and turns.

While we’ve previously heard that this spin-off was going by the title A Ciegas, which happens to have been the Spanish title used for the first Bird Box, Netflix has now announced that the film is officially titled Bird Box Barcelona – and it will be available to watch on the streaming service as of July 14th!

Bird Box, one of Netflix’s most-watched movies ever, has finally spawned a follow-up — some four-and-a-half years after the Sandra Bullock-led original broke streaming records.
Released back in December 2018, the original Bird Box followed a mother (played by Bullock) as she and her children embark on a two-day journey whilst blindfolded, to avoid eye contact with a mysterious force that is decimating the world’s population. Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story) and John Malkovich (Billions) co-starred.
