Shemar Moore was celebrating the renewal of S.W.A.T in a big way last night at the CBS Fall Schedule Celebration in Hollywood.
Moore has portrayed series lead Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson across the show’s 7 seasons and serves as a producer. S.W.A.T is a procedural drama that follows Hondo, a Los Angeles S.W.A.T. Sargent who balances loyalty to the job and the streets where he grew up. The show airs new episodes Friday at 8 p.m.
Following 6 seasons, CBS announced in 2023 that the series was canceled before the network reversed its decision opting to renew the show for a seventh and final season which premiered earlier this year. Following an impassioned campaign led by Moore and the drama’s devoted fans, CBS uncanceled the show once more announcing last month they’d ordered an eighth season.

The S.W.A.T. Season 7 finale, which wrapped filming last week — just two days after the surprise un-cancellation news came through — as written left things “wide open” for more adventures for Hondo & Co.
S.W.A.T. showrunner Andrew Dettmann had told TVLine ahead of the seventh and “final” season, “Look, it was presented to us as definitively final. But I’ve always said, as I talk to the actors and the other writers here, everybody holds out hope. Your show’s not gone till your show’s gone, right? So, we’re approaching it to make it a wonderful farewell if that turns out to be what it is.

David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

With the 2024 Oscars and the 2023 Emmys firmly in the rearview mirror, the film and TV awards calendar is all but ready to return to normalcy after last years Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strikes disrupted the first half of award season. The last major event to be impacted by the altered schedule is today’s WGA Awards, which took place in an unusual post-Oscars slot after the strikes forced the guild to delay its voting process. As most of Hollywood looks ahead to the 2024 film and TV slate, today’s concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles’ Hollywood Palladium and New York City’s Edison Ballroom gave award watchers one last chance to celebrate the best screenwriting of 2023.

The David Hemingson-scripted Alexander Payne dramedy The Holdovers and Cord Jefferson’s American Fiction were the big film winners at the strike-delayed 2024 Writers Guild Awards, which were handed out Sunday in Los Angeles and New York.
Jefferson — who also was honored with the WGA West’s Paul Selvin Award — followed his Oscar win for Adapted Screenplay as the WGA’s weird, wild and elongated Awards season wrapped with simultaneous ceremonies on both coasts. Hemingson scored a modicum of revenge for losing the Original Screenplay Academy Award to Justine Triet and Arthur Harari for Anatomy of a Fall.
The latter script, however, wasn’t eligible for a Writers Guild Award. That’s because, unlike other guilds, the WGA deems ineligible any scripts for movies not produced under its Minimum Basic Agreement or a bona fide collective bargaining agreement with various affiliated countries.
Later, the Documentary prize went to Errol Morris...

Heatseeking filmmaker Olmo Schnabel has signed for representation with WME, and with Black Bear for management.
Schnabel’s breakout directorial effort “Pet Shop Days” played both the Venice International Film Festival and SXSW this cycle, scoring distribution from Utopia for a 2024 theatrical release. Starring Jack Irv, Darío Yazbek Bernal, Willem Dafoe and Peter Sarsgaard, the film tells of a drug lord scion on the run from his powerful family. Slumming it in New York in a haze of sex and drugs, he seduces an equally lost young man and pulls him into the city’s underbelly.
The provocative debut also hit festivals in Chicago, Montclair, Morelia, Santa Barbara and Sarasota. Schnabel was also awarded the Leffest Lisboa Film Festival’s Tap Revelation Award.

S.W.A.T. could be a perfect example of how a network can mishandle a reliable performer.
Based on its ratings, S.W.A.T. should have been a sure shot for CBS to renew.
In Live + 7 results, S.W.A.T. Season 6 averaged 6.8 million viewers and a 0.7 rating in the demo.
This made the series the No.3 show in the demo on the network and No. 10 among total viewers.
Despite that, the ax fell on S.W.A.T. last May, with storylines left hanging, the worst possible fate for a veteran series.
Star Shemar Moore blasted the decision because he and the other cast members saw those rating numbers and felt confident about a renewal.
The cancellation stood for two days. Then CBS caved in the face of a deluge of outrage from the series' fans, and S.W.A.T. was renewed for a 13-episode final, seventh season, giving it a chance for closure.
Then came the lengthy actors' and writers' strikes,...

CBS hit show S.W.A.T. is ending after seven seasons. What is the reason behind the shocking cancellation, and can the show be saved? Keep reading for all the latest details.
S.W.A.T. Ending With Season 7
Friday night timeslots are often the kiss of death for TV shows. But the police drama S.W.A.T. was always among the top ratings draw for its 8 Pm timeslot. So, fans were taken aback when the network abruptly canceled the show in 2023 after six seasons.
Actor Shemar Moore is among the core cast who have been on the show since the beginning. He publicly denounced the decision, speaking out on social media and during television appearances. With his support and fan outrage, the network reversed the cancellation just days later. But there was a catch.

It’s been a challenging year for fans of the Shemar Moore-fronted S.W.A.T.
The series was canceled in May, leaving fans hanging over a cliff and worried there would be no resolution.
Thanks to the passionate fans, CBS reversed its decision and picked up a 13-episode S.W.A.T. Season 7 to bring the show to a close.
We’re now weeks into the final season, and it continues to pull in strong ratings, leading to some big questions about why the series was canceled in the first place.
S.W.A.T. has consistently been a reliable performer, but there has been an upswing in shows ending their runs after seven seasons of late.
Station 19, The Good Doctor, and Young Sheldon are all ending this season after their seventh seasons, leaving a great void on the broadcast networks.
