After a slew of wild surprises from the industry-related guild awards that have been bestowed upon us in the last couple of weeks, it should be expected that the 2024 Oscar nominations this Tuesday morning would bring us a few jaw-droppers. As predicted, “Oppenheimer” dominated the nominations with 13, but “Poor Things” did not come far behind with 11. Meanwhile, “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Barbie” underperformed, missing major categories. Following the announcement, contributors Charlie Bright, Tony Ruiz and Christopher Tsang convened to discuss their immediate reactions to the shocks and surprises. Watch the lively video above.
Even though “Barbie” and “Killers of the Flower Moon” were left off of some categories, they both got into ones that many were not predicting, such as America Ferrara for Best Supporting Actress for the summer blockbuster and “Killers of the Flower Moon” surprising in Best Original Song for “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People...

Quickly discussing what has made headlines last year at the Oscars with Smith slapping Chris Rock, along with the release of Rock’s new Netflix stand-up special, all parties agree that the awards cycle has come full circle with this incident and while it will likely be mentioned in host Jimmy Kimmel’s monologue, it’s had its moment in the sun for quite some time.

The SAG Awards nominating committee spread the wealth, with “The Banshees of Inisherin” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” being the only two movies to merit five nominations (ensemble plus four individual stars). Over on the TV side, “Ozark” reaped four bids for its final season.

With the last two years of showbiz awards being very erratic, 2022 seemed to be the first year in a while where everything was back to normal, or at least the closest thing to it. In the midst of a still ongoing pandemic, we managed to get a full slate of entertainment awards ceremonies and, with that, an entire slate of amazing moments that would define the year. Below, 15 of our site’s editors and contributors explain which moments were the best for them.
Many of these moments came from specific wins. Matthew Stewart was incredibly moved by Troy Kotsur’s Best Supporting Actor win at the Oscars. Daniel Montgomery loved “Squid Game” getting rewarded at this year’s Emmys and bringing attention to international productions. David Buchanan was over the moon when the recent revival of “Company” won five Tony Awards only seven months after the passing of the show’s composer,...

Beating the odds, Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”) won his second Emmy on Monday night in the Best Comedy Actor category. He was predicted to be bested by his old “Saturday Night Live” co-star Bill Hader (“Barry”), but managed to pull off the win. This is Sudeikis’ second consecutive acting trophy for playing the titular football coach on the Apple TV Plus hit comedy. Besides Hader, Sudeikis also beat out Steve Martin (“Only Murders in the Building”), Martin Short (“Only Murders in the Building”), Donald Glover (“Atlanta”) and Nicholas Hoult (“The Great”).
His episode submission this year was “No Weddings and a Funeral,” the 10th episode of the season. At Monday’s Primetime Emmys ceremony, Brett Goldstein (“Ted Lasso”) became the first person to repeat in the Best Comedy Supporting Actor category since Tony Hale (“Veep”) six years ago. Hale prevailed in 2013 and 2015, so his wins weren’t consecutive like Goldstein’s now are. Goldstein plays Roy Kent on the Apple TV Plus hit series and submitted the fifth episode from Season 2, titled “Rainbow,” to Emmy judges.
Goldstein took down fellow nominees Anthony Carrigan (“Barry”), Toheeb Jimoh (“Ted Lasso”), Nick Mohammed (“Ted Lasso”), Tony Shalhoub (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), Tyler James Williams (“Abbott Elementary”), Henry Winkler (“Barry”) and Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”). In many ways, “Better Call Saul” was a modern moral tragedy calling on biblical themes of pride, greed and consequences. Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) didn’t read a Bible, but H.G. Wells’ “The Time Machine” was by his bedside. It was this book Monday’s finale used to explore Jimmy’s regrets and choices. “It was the perfect ending,” reflects Joyce Eng in Gold Derby’s video recap with Marcus James Dixon, Charlie Bright and Matt Noble. “When asked the question ‘what is the best thing in pop culture these days?’ the answer inevitably has to be the drama series that are on TV, streaming and cable at the moment,” declares Rob Licuria about the unprecedented number of prestige dramas in contention this year. “I’ve never seen anything quite like the amount of amazing content that we’re talking about today. Congratulations to our User Becca for an outstanding score of 100 (18 out of 18 categories) when predicting the 2022 Daytime Emmy Awards winners.
Hundreds of people worldwide predicted these daytime champs in 18 categories announced in the ceremony hosted by “Entertainment Tonight” anchors Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner and at the Creative Arts and Lifestyle ceremony held the weekend before. Our top scorer got all the winners right for Best Drama Series (“General Hospital”), Best Actor (John McCook for “The Bold and the Beautiful”) and Best Actress (Mishael Morgan for “The Young and the Restless”), plus even tougher ones like Jeff Kober (“General Hospital”) and Frankie Celenza (“Struggle Meals”).

We’ll keep you up-to-date on the results of these awards, which have about a success rate of about 75% when it comes to predicting the winners of the four individual acting awards at the Oscars. The SAG Awards nominating committee spread the wealth, with “House of Gucci” and “The Power of the Dog” being the only two movies to merit three nominations. Over on the TV side, “Succession” and “Ted Lasso” netting a leading five bids apiece (ensemble plus four individual stars).

Congratulations to our User Pranshu for the best accuracy score of 87.50% when predicting the 2022 SAG Awards TV nominations on Wednesday morning. He is actually tied with patrickk_del and larapredicts at that percentage but has the better point score of 15,490 by using the two Super Bets (500 points each) wisely.
Almost 2,300 people worldwide predicted these television nominees in the last few months leading up to the announcement by Rosario Dawson and Vanessa Hudgens. Our top scorer got 35 out of 40 nomination slots correct, with some difficult choices like Jung Ho-yeon (“Squid Game”) for drama actress, Sandra Oh (“The Chair”) for comedy actress and Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”) for movie/limited actor.

Back on December 11, Troy Kotsur (“Coda”) ranked seventh in our overall Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor, based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users. But what a difference a week or so makes. As of this writing Kotsur has risen to fourth place with 8/1 odds. He’s virtually tied with Jamie Dornan (“Belfast”), who himself has seen a meteoric rise to third place, also with 8/1 odds.
It’s not often that you see deaf actors in prominent movie roles, but “Coda” cast such actors for the role of a deaf family, whose hearing daughter (Emilia Jones) wants to pursue dreams outside of the family fishing business. We knew early on that Matlin would be an Oscar contender given that she already had a high profile in the industry; she won the Best Actress Oscar for 1986’s “Children of a Lesser God,” for which she still holds...

Not only have marquee categories like Best Director been discussed ad nauseum, but they have also become foregone conclusions in this historically long Oscar season. More mysterious, yet each equally important to one’s predictions score are the short-film categories, which open my slugfest with Charlie Bright, Luca Giliberti and Tony Ruiz on the 10 toughest races to call for this Sunday’s ceremony (watch the video above). I tell them, “These are the […] categories that are going to kill us in our scores,” to which Ruiz responds, “Of course.” We close with an always-needed discussion on lead actresses:

10:00 — Best Documentary Short
18:55 — Best Animated Short
