Rafe Spall and Emilia Fox are commanding in a real-life story about a man raising his sons after losing his wife to breast cancer
Related: Mum’s bucket list: ‘Have a great time after I’ve gone’
Heartfelt and utterly committed performances from Rafe Spall and Emilia Fox are the bedrock of this sweet and desperately sad British film, taken from the autobiographical first novel by Somerset paramedic St John Greene, about the loss of his wife, Kate, to breast cancer, right after their young son had himself recovered from a tumour. An unthinkably cruel blow. It is a movie with big scenes and it did get under my guard: the sheer emotional candour from Spall and Fox carries the drama, whose action turns on the fact that St John has created a list of the texts his wife sent him in her final days, each intended to remind him...

With Massimo Cellino’s revolution now in full swing at Leeds United, fresh footballing talent seems to be finally joining the ranks at Elland Road for the first time in several years.
The club have been handed an ideal opportunity by their new owner, and by the big money sale of Ross McCormack to Fulham to bring in some new players and make a big play to return to the Premier League. Even if it doesn’t happen immediately, with stability behind the scenes, Leeds should be making their grand return the least of their objectives, and the road to that will be paved with new opportunities and potentially new heroes.
With a new dawn promised, now is the perfect time for fans to look back at some of the previous players that have worn the famous white shirt of Leeds and gone on to become cult heroes in the process.

Upon the announcement over the weekend that Italian international and part-time wizard Fabio Borini was close to sealing a move to Sunderland, a debate has been ignited in the Twitterverse as to whether this really represents value for money, and if the footballing world has once again gone stark raving bonkers.
Certainly on first viewing the fee seems excessive, however if the likes of 27 year old nearly man Ross McCormack can command £11m fee to seal his move to Championship side Fulham, then perhaps it isn’t as outrageous as first thought. This is certainly backed up by the fact that the initial cost will only be a meagre £10m, and if we are lucky enough to have to pay the remaining £4m, it clearly means things are going swimmingly up in SR5.
The transfer also represents an excellent piece of business for Brendan Rogers on Merseyside – especially...

Newly flush with a gigantic transfer war chest thanks to the sale of Luis Suarez to Barcelona, Liverpool have already proved to be one of the most busy clubs in the summer transfer window. Brendan Rodgers has already brought in Emre Can, Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic, and is strongly linked to both Divock Origi and Dejan Lovren, as well as a host of striking options, and it looks like one is about to join the club.
Fresh from a disappointing World Cup in which he didn’t play the time his self-appointed billing suggested he should have, Loic Remy is on the verge of signings for the Reds after Rodgers’ team agreed a deal to sign him from Qpr for £8.5m.
Last season Remy was on loan at Newcastle, where he scored 14 goals in just 26 starts for the club, around injuries...

Liverpool have some previous in the transfer market for misunderstanding the true nature of value: for every deal that sees them pocket £70m for Luis Suarez or £50m for Fernando Torres, there are countless that suggest an ineptitude in identifying the right targets. And though their work so far this summer has proved smart – particularly if they manage to add £8.5m Loic Remy to the squad too – in the past two years, they’ve over-spent on the likes of Ousmane Assaidi, Mamadou Sakho, Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas, and Tiago Ilori.
It’s no surprise then that when the opportunity to make some of their money back, the club leap at the chance, why is probably why Fabio Borini – a player deemed surplus to requirements after just 13 league games and a solitary goal – is going to cost Sunderland £3m more than Liverpool paid for him.

Alan Pardew has suggested that he won’t be afraid to use Newcastle new-boy Ayoze Perez in the Premier League next season as our efforts to sign a striker continue to falter.
The 22-year-old forward joined from Spanish Segunda Division club Tenerife earlier this month – our first permanent acquisition in 18-months – and was expected to spend the campaign acclimatising to life in England in the development squad under the guidance of Magpies great Peter Beardsley.
But a report in the Shields Gazette states that Perez will undergo extra strength and conditioning work during pre-season to prepare him for the speed and ferocity of the top-flight in a clear indication that Pardew will hasten his elevation into the first-team with a new forward seemingly not forthcoming.

By the looks of it Newcastle are switching their attentions to the Championship in their hunt for attacking reinforcements with reports suggesting we’ve opened talks with Leeds captain Ross McCormack.
Both the Yorkshire Post and the Shields Gazette have indicated that the Magpies have contacted Leeds this week to check up on the Scotland international’s availability following a turbulent campaign in which he scored 29 goals and emerged as a pillar of consistency at at Elland Road.
It’s understood that McCormack wants a crack at the Premier League as he enters his prime years and that he’s already informed the Whites of his desire to leave this summer following the treatment and subsequent departure of manager Brian McDermott.
That should prove a strong bargaining chip in our favour given the bizarre £8 million asking price quoted by the Gazette. For a 27-year-old with zero...

It’s been a busy day in Leeds after the sacking of Brian McDermott, but there’s finally good news for the fans as Ross McCormack will be staying at the Yorkshire club.
The club captain was subject to a lot of speculation late on after a hectic day but tweeted ahead of the game tomorrow and issued a rallying cry for the fans.
The mini saga began this morning when Cardiff City had a £4million bid rejected by Leeds, with McCormack then stating he was happy at the club and would be going nowhere.
Then the story was flipped on its head as McDermott was sacked from his managerial position after just ten months at the club and on the back of a run of 8 defeats, a decision that upset the striker.
Ross McCormack then joined SkySports News on the phone to discuss...

Ross McCormack has sensationally gone back on his earlier statement that he was happy at Leeds, calling into Sky Sports News after the dismissal of manager Brian McDermott and refusing to categorically rule out a move away from the club.
The Scottish international had previously said only three hours ago that he was happy at Leeds, but has changed his position after the news that McDermott had been sacked.
In contrast to his firm position before, the 27-year-old – talking to Ssn’s Bryan Swanson – refused to rule out moving, openly stating he was ‘gutted’ at his manager’s sacking – to the obvious disgust of former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan who was a guest on the show.
The news is bound to interest both Cardiff City and West Ham United – both clubs were thought to be interested in the player, with the latter having tabled a £4 million bid.

We are now into the last few days of the January transfer window, with plenty of business that can still be done. One potential departure from the Premier League is Dani Osvaldo who is likely to return to Serie A following a training ground bust-up with teammate Jose Fonte.
After Osvaldo attacked Fonte he was suspended for two weeks, and the Italian’s victim received a black eye for his trouble. It has now emerged that the former Roma man could end up with a fine that nearly reaches £250k if he is still at Southampton when the transfer window closes.
However, one possible sticking point is recouping the £15m that the English club paid for him during the summer. The purpose of this slideshow is to look at where Southampton may look to reinvest the money that they do receive in terms of a new forward.

West Ham United have signed AC Milan’s combative midfielder Antonio Nocerino on loan for the rest of the season.
The 28-year-old has 15 caps for Italy and once drew comparisons to Rossoneri great Gennaro Gattuso, but has been in and out of the side under Max Allegri and successor Clarence Seedorf this term.
Nocerino’s arrival at the Hammers comes after Milan agreed to sign Michael Essien from Chelsea. This move thus left Nocerino surplus to requirements at the San Siro.
Fans of English football may remember Nocerino from Euro 2012. He converted one of the penalties in Italy’s shootout quarter-final win over the Three Lions. Nocerino also counts Juventus and Palermo as former clubs.
In other West Ham news, the East London outfit have had a reported £3.5 million bid for Championship top scorer and Leeds United captain Ross McCormack rejected.

Blackpool ended a run of four straight Championship defeats by coming back at Bloomfield Road to hold Leeds United. Tom Ince canelled out Lee Peltier’s opener, but the ill-discipline of the Seasiders continued as defender Kirk Broadfoot was sent off.
Leeds scored midway through a drab first half when the wingbacks combined. Peltier nodded Danny Pugh’s back across goal and his header looped into the corner. Blackpool threatened most from set pieces with Tom Ince putting in decent deliveries.
Versatile Tangerines defender Broadfoot came closest for the hosts before half time when he turned a near post corner wide. Jason Pearce did the same for Brian McDermott’s Whites after the break.
Jack Robinson lashed over Blackpool ten minutes into the second half and they levelled midway through it thanks to Ince junior. His 20-yarder took a deflection off Leeds centre half Marius Zaliukas, leaving Paddy Kenny bamboozled.

Leeds United have not won at Blackpool since 1967, yet they are three points and five places better off than their hosts on Boxing Day after 21 Championship matches.
Paul Ince’s Seasiders have lost four in a row, dropping out of the playoffs and down to tenth at Christmas. Brian McDermott and the Whites have benefitted from this, putting together an unbeaten run of two wins and two draws which has resulted in them climbing into the top six.
Scotland striker Ross McCormack is in hot form for Leeds after scoring 11 goals in his last eight matches. Blackpool – contending with injuries and suspensions – have by contrast only netted that many times as a team since the end of September.
As this match kicks off after all but one of the Championship encounters on Boxing Day, United will start no lower than eighth.

Leeds United manager Brian McDermott praised the home support after his side came from two-goals down at half-time to draw 3-3 at Elland Road.
The home fans made an electric atmosphere in the second-half after Matt Smith pulled one back for Leeds and the manager believes this was key in the home side getting back into the game. He said:
“We got ourselves back to 2-1 and the whole place erupted like I knew it would. It was a fantastic atmosphere in Elland Road today and I was proud of my players.”

Watford threw away a two-goal lead to draw 3-3 at Elland Road this afternoon, condemning the Hornets to continue their run of eight league games without a win.
