New Delhi, March 28 (Ians) There may not have been any Laliga Santander action this past week, since it was the March international break, but there were still several interesting developments at Spain’s clubs and the most interesting are discussed below.
Mendilibar takes charge at Sevilla Fc
For the 16th season in a row, Jose Luis Mendilibar will coach in Laliga Santander. The 62-year-old has been appointed as the new boss at Sevilla Fc, replacing Jorge Sampaoli as the Andalusian club move on to their third manager of the campaign. Mendilibar brings a wealth of experience to the Estadio Ramón Sanchez-Pizjuan, having taken charge of 448 Laliga Santander games in his career, and he’ll look to use that know-how to lead Sevilla Fc away from relegation danger.
Elche Cf appoint Beccacece

China, which clashed with the NBA this fall, has moved on to a new pro sports league confrontation, yanking an English Premiere League soccer broadcast after a player’s criticism of the government.
CCTV, China’s main broadcast network, was going to broadcast a match between Arsenal and Manchester City on Sunday. The telecast was scratched in the wake of comments by Arsenal’s Mesut Özil about the internment of Uighurs in China. Streaming services in China, Pptv Sports and Migu Sports, also pulled their coverage of the game.
Özil, a devout Muslim of Turkish heritage, put out a long message on social media Friday morning about the circumstances faced by the Muslim Uighur population in China. “Qurans are being burned,” he wrote. “Mosques are being closed … Muslim schools are being banned… Religious scholars are being killed one by one.”

Arsenal are generally considered to not be too far away from challenging for the Barclays Premier League title in the 15/16 season. The recent arrival of Petr Cech, mixed with the world-class talent of players such as Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Özil suggests The Gunners are the strongest they’ve been in over a decade, with Arsene Wenger no longer afraid to splash the cash on top players.
The arrival of Cech from domestic rivals Chelsea could finally be the world-class number one goalkeeper Arsenal have been struggling for in recent years, with both David Ospina and Wojciech Szczęsny struggling to nail down their spot in the starting eleven.
But is Petr Cech enough? Is that the final piece in the jigsaw to allow Arsenal to win their first league title since 2004? If not, who else do The Gunners need to sign in order to catch Chelsea?...

Arsenal are into the final of the Barclays Asia Trophy after beating a Singapore Select XI 4-0 in their first pre-season game. A hat-trick from youngster Chuba Akpom as well as a Jack Wilshere penalty gave Arsenal a comfortable victory, and they will now go on to face Everton in the final on Saturday. Arsene Wenger put trust in his young squad, having only named six substitutes for the match and opportunities being given to several youth players.
Several big names were not involved, with the likes of Mesut Özil, Petr Cech and Alexis Sanchez missing out. The youngsters did not hesitate to take their chance though, with Arsenal always in control and rarely threatened at the back against what was a very average Singapore Select XI. New signing Cech is expected to start on Saturday, after youngster Emiliano Martinez was given a chance to impress in their landslide victory.

Over the past decade, Arsenal have experienced some turbulent seasons. Prior to last year’s campaign’s closely fought Fa Cup win, the Emirates’ trophy cabinet had been balder than Phil Mitchel’s bald head and the Gunners lack of silverware was becoming a running joke among other football fans. However, last season’s campaign was deceptively solid. Granted they came nowhere near to winning the League Title in the end, but Arsenal actually spent the most time sitting at the league’s summit. They may have faltered in the latter half of the season, but Wenger’s men still managed a finish good enough to guarantee them Champions League football as well as finally ending their infamous trophy draught.
They may not have experienced the unparalleled success they had at the start of the century when the likes of Robert Pirès, Dennis Bergkamp and Thierry Henry dominated the league,...

Proving that there's no such thing as too much publicity, Kanye West unveiled a brand new track on Saturday, his wedding day. "God Level" is part of Adidas's just-released FIFA World Cup commercial and might be the only reason to watch "The Dream," unless, you know, soccer is your thing. After listening to the song and watching players Dani Alves, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Luis Suárez, Xavi, Jordi Alba, Mesut Özil, Robin van Persie, and David Villa get their heads in the game, feel free to go back to stalking Kim Kardashian’s Instagram for the last photos of the #weddingwkend.

It has been a season of highs and lows for Arsenal. Having led the pack of Premier League title-contenders for an impressive 128-days it looked for a long time during the 2013/14 season that Arsenal were finally going to end their trophy drought with a title. Manchester City – who spent just 15-days at the Premier League’s summit – proved quite emphatically that this statistic means very little. With the Fa Cup Final rapidly approaching this weekend it really is make-or-break time for Arsenal’s 2013/14 campaign. A finish earning them that all-important Champions League spot combined with a trophy to end the nine long years without one will – to the vast majority at least – represent a very successful season from Arsène and his Gunners.

Well it was fun whilst it lasted. Not many people at the start of the season predicted Arsenal would be in the title race yet here we are, around two thirds of the way through the campaign and Arsenal are only a point off top spot, a top spot they have occupied for most of the season. Week-by-week, pundits would predict the unravelling of Arsenal’s title bid but week-by-week they remained up there despite a defeat away at Manchester United and a 6-3 hammering at the hands of the blue side of Manchester.
Arsenal fans started to believe. Aaron Ramsey, a player whose goals were once seen to mark the imminent death of a celebrity, had the rich and the famous begging for mercy as he found the net again and again whilst record signing Mesut Özil silently pulled the strings from midfield. Olivier Giroud...

The Premier League returns after an international break that saw the England national team comfortably qualify for the next summer’s World Cup.
Arsenal and Liverpool are co-leaders heading into the weekend. It’s Brendan Rodgers’ side who kick the weekend off at Newcastle in Saturday’s lunch time kickoff at Newcastle.
At 3pm Arsenal host a Norwich City side who have fallen into the relegation zone with three defeats in their last four fixtures. Mesut Özil is a doubt for the Gunners after a hobbling off in Germany’s 5-3 win over Sweden on Tuesday. Theo Walcott remains absent but Santi Cazorla may return.
Other notable 3pm kickoffs include Chelsea at home to newly-promoted Cardiff City, Manchester United taking on high-flying Southampton and Gus Poyet’s first game in charge of Sunderland, at Swansea City.
Manchester City have picked up just 1 point on their travels to...

One more round of Premier League action before the international break kicks off at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday lunchtime as Manchester City look to bounce back from their midweek thrashing by Bayern Munich against the league’s last unbeaten team, Everton.
Manuel Pellegrini’s side are 2 points below Everton and 5 points behind league leaders Arsenal heading into the weekend.
Liverpool returned to winning ways last Sunday against bottom-of-the-league Sunderland and on Saturday they host the team 19th, Crystal Palace. Luis Suárez returned from his 10-game suspension to bag a brace last weekend and eyes will be on him again against Ian Holloway’s side whom have lost 5 of their 6 Premier League games since promotion back to England’s top flight.
Saturday evening’s game sees Sunderland host a Manchester United side that were playing in Ukraine on Wednesday. David Moyes’ side have already lost three league...

Five games into the 2013-14 Premier League season and we’ve already seen our first managerial casualty. Sunderland relieved the duties of Paolo Di Canio on Sunday, the day after his side were thrashed 3-0 at West Brom.
The fiery Italian manager won just 2 of his 12 Premier League games in charge of the Black Cats and was winless in his final 9. Sunderland are the only team without a win this season; their solo point coming in a 1-1 draw at Southampton.
Moving forward to this weekend’s fixtures, Sunderland welcome Liverpool to the Stadium of Light on Sunday. Brendan Rodgers’ side are welcoming Luis Suárez back to Premier League action for the first time since April.
Tottenham-Chelsea is the weekend opener on Saturday at lunchtime. The master versus the apprentice as some are dubbing it, with José Mourinho taking on André Villas-Boas. It’s the North London...

What a difference a month makes in football.
From a team in a desperate crisis to title contenders. Throughout the summer, Arsenal fans were crying out for Arsene Wenger to make some signings however, on the opening game of the season, they found themselves cheering for only one new name in the freely acquired, French youngster Yaya Sanogo. Fast forward 90 minutes and Arsenal had just lost a home game to Aston Villa by 3 goals to 1. Coming off to a chorus of boos and chants of “spend some money”, Arsene and the team knew they had to improve and fast. With two vital games in the Champions league against Fenerbahçe to come and just a week until the transfer window closed, the gunners found themselves fighting for their season early on and possibly for their Manager’s job.
From doom and gloom to rays of sunshine at the Emirates as Arsenal...

There seem to be two prevailing opinions around Arsenal’s deadline day signing of Mesut Özil. The first, from detractors and generally fans of rival teams, is that Arsenal may well have bought themselves a world class player, but they have completely ignored their more pressing needs; namely a striker, a centre back and a defensive midfielder. The second, held mostly by Arsenal fans and those blinded by the stellar nature of the signing, is that a big name player, any big name player, is exactly what Arsenal needed to put themselves back on the map and announce their arrival as major players in world football again.
Whilst there is merit in both opinions, there is one element of the first that is invalid. Arsenal do not need a defensive midfielder. Why?

The transfer window is for fans what Christmas is for children. They write their wishlists and send them off to the imaginary football Santa in the hope that come the climax of Deadline Day, all their wishes will have come true. For Arsenal fans, this was meant to be the summer that Arsene Wenger would spend his cash reserve and turn them into title challengers. In the end, it turned out to be a summer of striker related sagas which ended with Arsenal signing a world class attacking midfielder to join two free agents and a loan signing. So how well have Arsenal done this summer? Could their transfer business see them challenge for the Premier League title once again?
For much of the summer, Brazilian stopper Julio Cesar seemed destined to move across London from Queens Park Rangers yet despite his relatively cheap price tag Arsene Wenger,...

It has been a so-so summer for Arsenal. At the end of last season, chief executive Ivan Gazidis told the press that Arsene Wenger will have up to £70 million in transfer funds to spend over the summer. With Arsenal fans getting excited for what lay ahead for their club, expecting big-name signings who would help them to their first trophy for 8 years, and being the only top four club to retain their manager, it was the opportune to take advantage.
However, getting further and further into the window, fans were getting frustrated, Arsenal’s only signing being French youngster Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer, who’s playing time was mainly in the French Ligue 2 with Aj Auxerre. Despite his obvious potential, he was not the big-name signing Arsenal fans were looking for, and he unlikely to make much of an impact this season.
Meanwhile, players where flooding out of the Emirates.

Manchester United manager David Moyes is reportedly “considering” a bid for Real Madrid playmaker Luka Modrić.
The Guardian claim that Manchester United have finally given up in the chase for former Arsenal captain Cesc Fàbregas and that focus will switch to bringing the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Modrić instead.
Real Madrid only signed the Croatian playmaker last summer for a fee of £33 million, but he failed to settle in initially and was voted the worst player in La Liga in 2012.
A change in manager this summer at the Santiago Bernabéu saw Carlo Ancelloti take charge of last season’s runners-up. Central midfielders Isco, Asier Illarramendi and Casemiro have all joined the books. Along with Mesut Özil and Kaká who also play those central roles, Modrić faces tough competition for a place in the team.
David Moyes has seemingly been chasing a playmaking midfielder this summer, first missing out on Thiago Alcântara and then Fàbregas.
