Searchlight Pictures announced on Friday that its darkly comedic horror film Nightbitch, starring six-time Academy Award nominee Amy Adams (Arrival), has been slated for release in theaters on December 6.
An adaptation of Rachel Yoder’s acclaimed debut novel, from writer-director Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) Nightbitch tells the story of a woman thrown into the stay-at-home routine of raising a toddler in the suburbs, who slowly embraces the feral power deeply rooted in motherhood, as she becomes increasingly aware of the bizarre and undeniable signs that she may be turning into a canine.
Marking a reemergence of Megan Ellison’s reconfigured Annapurna in the marketplace, the project came together when Bond Group and Annapurna acquired film rights to Yoder’s book and developed the script alongside Heller. In May 2022, Searchlight acquired worldwide rights to the project, in a deal valued at over $25M.

There have been plenty of movies detailing life in a fraternity — Animal House being the crown jewel of all, no matter how outrageously funny. The newest entry in the genre, The Line, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival this weekend, is not trying to amuse on any level; a deadly serious take on college frat houses, it looks like it was ripped straight from the many headlines about hazing deaths and horrific goings-on at these places.
However, for at least its first half to first two thirds, this feature film debut for director Ethan Berger (who also co-wrote the script with Alex Russek) is aiming to entertain with a look at the fictional southern Kappa Nu Alpha fraternity in all its vile, sick, crass ugliness. If the goal was to make us hate these guys, the filmmakers succeed admirably. By the end I wanted see every last one of them...

Two years after Amy Adams’ production company Bond Group, along with Annapurna, acquired the rights to the novel “Nightbitch,” the film is finally howling straight ahead.
Searchlight Pictures has officially acquired the neo-horror thriller, already written and soon to be directed by Marielle Heller. Annapurna will produce the film, which is based on Rachel Yoder’s fall 2021 debut novel of the same name. The film will be released on Hulu, with other release plans to follow, per Searchlight.
“Nightbitch” tells the story of a stay-at-home mother (six-time Oscar nominee Adams) who begins to embrace the inherent feral power that comes with being a parent. When her husband travels for work, the unnamed lead character is isolated in the suburbs with only her two-year-old son for company. Soon, she starts to become convinced that she’s slowly turning into a canine and eventually seeks help to hide her feral alter ego from a mommy support group.

The Gotham Awards will be the first awards body on the independent circuit to choose its winners for the year on Monday.
On the film side, two Netflix features lead the tally, both from debut women filmmakers — Rebecca Hall’s “Passing” and Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Lost Daughter.” There isn’t always an obvious blueprint to predicting this group. As we saw with last year’s two tied categories, things could get interesting at Cipriani Wall Street. The Gotham are just the start of a busy week that has a great influence on the Oscar race. Acclaimed producer Christina Oh is joining Annapurna Pictures as an executive vice president.
Oh moves to Megan Ellison’s company as co-head of film, where she’ll work alongside the recently installed Adam Paulsen. She will report to Ellison, chief creative officer Sue Naegle and chief operating officer Chris Corabi.

Annapurna Pictures has made several key additions to its film team, including a new executive vice president and head of film in Adam Paulsen.

The staffing up signals that Annapurna founder and CEO Megan Ellison is serious about reinvigorating her film division to its former glory. The executive and Oracle heiress herself just returned to Los Angeles from a lengthy quarantine hiatus, as Variety reported in April, and is strategizing anew.

In his new movie “Pig,” Nicolas Cage is on a mission to reclaim something cherished that was taken from him: his prized pet pig that hunts truffles.
“Pig” is a revenge thriller starring Cage and Alex Wolff. Cage plays Rob, a truffle hunter who lives alone in the Oregonian wilderness who must return to his past in Portland in search of his beloved pig after she’s kidnapped. Early looks at the film have shown Cage bearded, grizzled and bloodied. And the first trailer for the film, released on Thursday, is much darker than you might expect.
Making his directorial debut on “Pig” is Michael Sarnoski, who developed the story with Vanessa Block. Neon will release the film theatrically next month after first teasing footage at last year’s Berlin Film Festival.

Exclusive: Valparaiso Pictures has wrapped shooting on documentary The Toxic Pigs of Fukushima, directed by BAFTA nominee Otto Bell (The Eagle Huntress), with Emmy winner Joe Bini (You Were Never Really Here) on board to edit.
The 40-minute doc charts the destruction wrought by the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 which triggered a tsunami, nuclear meltdown and mass evacuations. Through the central metaphor of radiated wild boars that now roam the region, Bell and longtime collaborator, cinematographer Simon Niblett, follow the everyday lives of a handful of citizens still struggling to make a life in the much-changed landscape.
Above we can reveal the first-look image from the film.
Los Anglees-based production firm Valparaiso fully financed with David Carrico and Adam Paulsen for Valparaiso and Bell’s Kissaki Films producing. CAA Media Finance is handling sales.

Daniel Kaluuya is teaming with Mattel Films to produce a new live-action Barney the Dinosaur film.
Barney, the eponymous purple dinosaur of popular 1990s PBS children’s program Barney & Friends, appears to be next in line for a comeback in an era in which comebacks are nigh-obligatory and retro reigns supreme. In this case, the recently-minted toy company studio arm, Mattel Films, is developing a new live-action film project, joined in the endeavor by, intriguingly enough, Oscar-nominated Get Out and Black Panther actor Daniel Kaluuya. – And no, this won’t be a bizarre, satirically-laced Jordan Peele-directed horror rendition.
It has been announced that the untitled Barney live-action revival movie is in development from producers in the aforementioned Mattel Films along with Kaluuya via his 59% banner, also represented by his partners, Rowan Riley and Amandla Crichlow. Also onboard to produce are Valparaiso’s David Carrico, Adam Paulsen and Bobby Hoppey.

“Working with Daniel Kaluuya will enable us to take a completely new approach to ‘Barney’ that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations,” Robbie Brenner of Mattel Films said in Friday’s announcement. “The project will speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults, while entertaining today’s kids.”
