On Friday, “Dear White People” creator Justin Simien revealed that he is one of many writer-producers or showrunners who saw their overall deals with the studios suspended amid the ongoing writers strike. But in a conversation with IndieWire, Simien explained that production companies like his Culture Machine depend on such deals to support their staffs and continue keeping the lights on.
And he’s not alone. Letters suspending such deals started arriving from all the major studios back on May 7, about a week after the strike began, and only a handful who have shows in active production are still getting paid. It’s meant a lot of writers in Simien’s position have quietly had to make tough choices, furloughing or laying off staff and finding other ways to cut costs.
Instead of going down that road, Simien launched a GoFundMe to support his Culture Machine staff, and it’s...

It’s been nearly a decade since Justin Simien stormed Sundance with his debut feature “Dear White People.” Premiering in Park City in January 2014 — his first trip to the festival — it marked the realization of a long held dream. The audacious social satire had been Simien’s passion project, inspired by his own college experience and fueled by a concept trailer that went viral and an Indiegogo campaign that raised 40,000 for the cause. The reception to “Dear White People” — for which Simien won the breakthrough talent special jury prize — launched the filmmaker’s career, spawning a four-season Netflix series, his sophomore film “Bad Hair” (which also debuted at Sundance) and Disney’s upcoming “Haunted Mansion.”
Now, he’s back at the festival with a new mission: paying it forward.

The showrunner of AMC’s recently scrapped Invitation to a Bonfire is hopeful that her psychological thriller will land elsewhere.
Rachel Caris Love says she’s already in conversations about finding “a partner who’s capable of giving us the support that we need.” Her team already completed four of the first six episodes when she received word before Christmas that AMC was killing the Boston-based project that stars Tatiana Maslany, Ngozi Anyanwu and Pilou Asbæ.
The series was given a six-episode order and was scheduled to launch this year on AMC and AMC+. But then Bonfire, along with the second season of 61st Street, were just dropped by AMC Networks after the company revealed it would take around 400M of content write downs.

“Set in the years after a nuclear war has ravaged the planet, desperate outlaws battle for survival in a world of radioactive chaos,” reads the official description of the Geiger comic. “Out past the poisoned wasteland lives a man even the Nightcrawlers and Organ People fear. Some name him Joe Glow, others call him the Meltdown Man. But his name…is Geiger.” The comic series is a lot of fun, with some great visuals to go along with it, particularly when Geiger is powered up. The 29th Annual Whitaker St. Louis International Film Festival (Sliff) wrapped on Nov. 22, 2020, but Cinema St. Louis is providing cinephiles another opportunity to view the event’s award winners in the Best of Fest, which is available virtually from Jan. 22-31, 2021.
A few of Sliff’s honorees are already or imminently out in the world — “Transhood” is available on HBO Max, and “9to5: The Story of a Movement” premieres on PBS’s “Independent Lens” on Feb. 1 — but Best of Fest reprises the other 19 winners of the festival’s juried and audience-choice awards.
Like 2020’s Sliff, the Best of Fest is an online-only event and is again presented with our virtual-festival partner, Eventive. Nine features and a program of 10 shorts will be available to stream during all 10 days of the event, and several of the films will once more include recorded Q&As with filmmakers and documentary subjects. Geographic restrictions will apply to some films.
