French Canadian director Sophie Dupuis’ third feature, “Solo,” saunters past the usual questions of queer identity and acceptance we often see onscreen.
Instead, her film starring 26-year-old muse Théodore Pellerin dances headlong into the suffocating effects of toxic love, via an art form that’s all about liberation: drag.
The Toronto Film Festival premiere opens with a gorgeous, sinewy rising star of the Montreal drag scene (Pellerin) twirling across the stage to Abba’s “Voulez-Vous,” while the screen goes from black to neon shades of purple. As the scene bleeds into a montage of Simon, now out of drag and dancing under the club lights, the world of “Solo” widens to his fellow queens, his sister Maude (Alice Moreault), and a newbie performer who catches his eye, Oliver (Félix Maritaud). And, for a brief moment, it appears that the carefree Simon is destined to have it all: a passionate romance with the recent French arrival,...

Our feature series Origins provides artists with a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, Carpool takes us through their new single, “No News is Good News.”
Emo-pop revolutionaries Carpool are back with the latest single from their upcoming album, My Life in Subtitles. The new track, “No News Is Good News,” continues their perfect formula of crafting the catchiest pop-punk inspired emo in the scene right now.
The song is explosive, just like the previous two singles from the forthcoming album (“Can We Just Get High” and “Open Container Blues”), but lyrically it is more downtempo and introspective than the rush of buzzing excitement and fast-paced collapse featured on the prior tracks.
The song is propelled forward by driving drums and emo’s signature twinkly guitars, and the dramatic, near-yelling vocals make the song instantly powerful. The titular phrase and theme of the song are catchy and thought-provoking.

Comedies often depend on precision, with jokes popping off like synchronized gunfire, though in Between the Temples, Nathan Silver stretches moments out to revel in texture and give his actors room to breathe. The film, written by Silver and C. Mason Wells, is a marvel of lived-in shagginess, of clashing, cacophonous tones that reveal characters’ inner furies. Between the Temples is funny and even suspenseful in its unpredictability, as you never quite know when and where the punchlines will land. The film revels in the volatile human comedy of which John Cassavetes, an obsessive miner of neurotic minutiae, might approve.
Take a scene in which a grieving widower, Ben (Jason Schwartzman), goes to lunch with his childhood music teacher, Carla (Carol Kane). Silver captures them eating in close-up, as they talk about their wonderful burgers, for much longer than most filmmakers would dare. The scene’s punchline—that Ben, the cantor at his local synagogue,...

Jeremy O. Harris is far from euphoric over the ongoing Writers Guild of America strike.
The “Euphoria” producer shared during Variety and Kering’s Women in Motion panel at Cannes that showrunner Sam Levinson will not cross picket lines to push Season 3 of the Emmy-winning series into production amid the strike. Harris in turn urged Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav to “come to that table” of negotiations.
“All I’ll say is Sam Levinson is not a scab,” Harris said. “He’s not a scab. David Zaslav, make a deal. That’s what I’ll say about Season 3 of ‘Euphoria.’ Make a deal, David. It’s easy. Just come to that table.”
“Euphoria” Season 3 was previously announced to go into production this year, with costume designer Heidi Bivens teasing a June 2023 start date during the “The Run Through with Vogue” podcast. Season 3 is also set to mark Emmy winner Zendaya’s directorial debut.

Yusuf/Cat Stevens harkens back to his Harold & Maude era in the new video for “All Nights, All Days,” the latest single off the legendary singer-songwriter’s upcoming LP King of a Land.
The visual finds Harold and Maude — the titular couple in the 1971 dark comedy classic soundtracked by Stevens — in an animated nightmare where they are pursued by evil politicians and oligarchs. However, the villains are ultimately locked up in the London Zoo.
“The only way that we can get on in peace is to get rid of most of them.

Origins is a recurring series that gives artists a space to break down everything that went into their latest release. Today, legendary songwriter Yusuf / Cat Stevens takes us behind his new single, “All Nights, All Days.”
Legendary singer-songwriter Yusuf / Cat Stevens has released “All Nights, All Days,” the latest single from his upcoming album, King of a Land. The track boasts a bouncy acoustic instrumental and cuttingly political lyrics, a streak that’s furthered by the gorgeous animated music video.
Leaning more into country rock than the previous King of a Land singles, the track allows Stevens to showcase his versatility as both a songwriter and a performer. He cites the Traveling Wilburys — the iconic supergroup made up of Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty — as a primary influence when it came to the composition and tone of the tune.

Judd Apatow returned for a fourth time to host the 75th Annual DGA Awards, where he opened Saturday’s show with yuks about Austin Butler’s voice, the presence of a “F–k Boy Table” and Tom Cruise’s stunts.
Unfortunately, Apatow’s off-color remarks could not be heard outside the Beverly Hilton ballroom. Like previous years, The King of Staten Island director instructed the DGA to cut off the feed from his speech to the press room so he could enjoy “creative freedom,” explained one insider. So Deadline was left to piece together what he said from various tweets.
“We are not even on the radio tonight,” Apatow remarked at the top of his monologue. “This show is being live-streamed to the back of this room. This show is so irrelevant, it’s shocking Elon Musk hasn’t bought it yet.”

At no moment in her life was Lisa Marie Presley allowed to forget she was her father’s daughter. When Presley, who has died aged 54, married Michael Jackson in 1994, the headline in The New York Times read: “Elvis Presley's Daughter Confirms She Wed Michael Jackson.” A decade later, reviews of her 2003 debut album, To Whom It May Concern, glossed over the music. Rolling Stone described Presley as “The King of Rock’s Daughter”. Village Voice suggested that nobody would remember the record “except Elvis fan clubs”.
In 2003, “nepo baby” had not yet been coined as a put-down for the offspring of the rich and famous. But if the record had been released 20 years later, you can bet it would have been caught up in the “discourse” around fame and privilege. This is a conversation that has rippled across social media in recent months, leaving in its wake a trail of spite and schadenfreude.

Judd and Iris Apatow turned the Los Angeles Lakers game into a father-daughter night out. On Jan. 4, the duo sat courtside during a game versus the Miami Heat at the Crypto.com arena in Los Angeles. Judd is known for being a big fan of the Lakers and often attends games, but it looked like a special night out with his daughter, thanks to the home team win.
This sporty moment was just between Judd and his youngest daughter, but it's not uncommon to see him and Leslie Mann, his wife of over 20 years, joined by their children Maude, 25, and Iris, 20, for public events. The family has been attending red carpet outings together since the girls were young.
While their family seems to value quality time together, the young actors also value their independence. In March 2022, the 20-year-old actor opened up about living with her best friend, Olivia Rodrigo in their first apartment as adults.

Quentin Tarantino just confirmed the long-time rumour involving his 2009 war-drama “Inglourious Basterds” and Adam Sandler.
During the director’s latest appearance on Bill Maher’s podcast “Club Random”, he admitted that the role of Sergeant Donny “The Bear Jew” Donowitz was written for Sandler.
However, at the time, Judd Apatow, who also appeared on the podcast as a fellow interviewee, had already gotten Sandler to star in his ’09 comedy-drama “Funny People” a year and a half before the film began production.

In a moving Instagram post, shared early Tuesday morning, Chmerkovskiy addressed “My dearest Kirstie,” writing, “We haven’t spoken lately and I’ll tell you everything when I finally see you, but for now I want to say that I love you very much and I wish you the most peaceful rest. Few actors are as effective conveying misanthropy as Peter Dinklage. With his arch line readings and endlessly expressive face, the actor excels at portraying damaged souls possessing an underlying vulnerability. It’s what makes him so perfect for the starring role in the new film scripted by Theodore Melfi (Hidden Figures) in which he plays an embittered economic professor desperately searching for happiness but failing miserably at every turn. American Dreamer, recently showcased as the opening night film of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival, is the sort of acerbic black comedy that feels like a throwback to the more cinematically daring 1970s era.
Dinklage plays Philip Loder, an economics professor at a New England university whose lectures mainly consist of angry screeds about social inequality. Philip relates to the subject personally, since he only earns 50,000 a year and doesn’t have the...

As the daughter of Leslie Mann and Judd Apatow, who have each been in the entertainment industry for three decades, Maude Apatow is no stranger to being called a "nepotism baby," a nickname for Hollywood stars with famous parents. With her mother and father so intertwined in her career, Maude can see why the nepotism claims are so prevalent, but she's on a mission to prove that her success is also a product of talent.
"At first I was sad," Maude said about being dubbed a "nepotism baby" in a recent interview with Porter. Actress Leslie Mann showed off her sensational figure in a crop-top sweater, jeans, and strappy heels as she visited the Largo Theater.
Leslie supported her husband, comedian/director/producer/screenwriter Judd Apatow, this week as he put on a benefit concert in Los Angeles on Tuesday, August 16.
Proving that age is just a number, 50-year-old Leslie wowed in her outfit for the evening, which included a low-cut, cream-colored crop-top with ribbing, which tastefully showed off the actress’ glowing skin and toned arms.
The California native looked cheerful, pairing her top with a pair of dark-washed jeans and black, strappy wedge heels. She carried a black cardigan on her arm, likely to keep warm inside the theater.

“One was the hot tub scene,” recalled Sweeney in an a new interview with Deadline. “I had to have a tube in my mouth and it was filling my mouth with disgusting chunks of food and I don’t even know what, and then I had to hold it in my mouth while the scene was happening and act as if it wasn’t happening and then throw up everywhere.”
The 24-year-old star was also worried about the sequence where Cassie goes up on stage and ruins her sister’s play.

Nothing has been set in stone for now, but Norman Lear and Brent Miller have a pretty good idea what they’d like to do if ABC decides to air another edition of Live In Front of a Studio Audience.
“We’ve talked about Maude for a handful of years and I guess now more than ever, it feels like the right choice,” says Miller, who joined Lear for Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees. “Because of obvious reasons with Roe v. Wade [being overturned], and it having one of the most iconic episodes of television, not just for Maude but for television in general.”
Miller is speaking about the 1972 two-parter dubbed “Maude’s Dilemma,” in which the comedy’s title character played by Bea Arthur discovers that, at 47, she was pregnant. At the time, Lear — who created the show for CBS — opted to have Maude terminate her pregnancy because of her age.
