The alienation of the megalopolis has always been an issue that particularly “hit” immigrants, and even more so during the holidays. Szu-Wei Chen focuses on the concept in order to present a very interesting 17-minute short, that highlights the fact with a pinch of intrigue.

“I’m really glad we got it made for Bill,” declares Cynthia Erivo about producing, starring in and writing an original song for the indie drama “Drift.” The late Bill Paxton was originally slated to direct, before he unexpectedly passed away in 2017. For our recent webchat she adds, “I think it’s a really wonderful thing that we were able to do something that was one of Bill’s last wishes. That’s a really special thing. I’m really proud of the fact that we put all the work we could possibly have put into this to have it be a real thing, to have it be real, to have it be realized, because it wasn’t easy. We worked really hard. I feel like it’s a really special piece.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Noise auteurs The Body and electronic artist Dis Fig, aka Felicia Chen, have announced the collaborative album Orchards of a Futile Heaven, arriving February 23rd via Thrill Jockey. The lead single “Holy Lance” can be streamed now.
The mysterious track offers a glimpse into the full breadth of the collab, as Chen’s voice cuts through a haze of droning noise. The tension builds to a climactic drop of feedback squalls and pulverizing guitar, with the vocals of Chen rising to match the sonic swell. Overall, the track recalls the post-metal adjacent music of Chelsea Wolfe, Myrkur, and Big|Brave, among others.
The Body and Dis Fig found common ground in their desire to make heavy music that defies “the tropes of metal and electronic music.” As heard on “Holy Lance,” they instead merged the two genres to create something altogether their own.

The second of the two movies Anthony Chen directed in 2023, “The Breaking Ice” has very little to do with the aesthetics of the ‘French' “Drift”, although elements of European cinema can also be found here. Also of note is the presence of Zhou Dongyu, probably the biggest star ever to appear in the director's filmography, while the film is the Singaporean entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.

Anthony Chen had a very busy year in 2023, coming up with two films, “The Breaking Ice” and “Drift”, with the second one, which we will deal with in this article, being a rather unique experience for him, considering it was shot in Greece, France and Liberia and is his English-language debut.

With memories still fresh from a war that forced her to leave Liberia, Jacqueline is trying to survive in a Greek Island, with her circumstances, though, being similar to a stray dog, as a rather eloquent shot in the beginning of the movie highlights. She eats what she can find, occasionally just bags of sugar, is sleeping on the beach and is washing what she can of her clothes in the sea, while roaming around without any particular goal or hope. On Thursday, a Manhattan jury ordered Robert De Niro’s company, Canal Productions, to pay his former assistant a total of $1.26 million in damages after the firm was found liable for gender discrimination and retaliation.
Although De Niro, 80, was not held personally responsible, the jury determined that Canal Productions should compensate his former longtime right-hand woman, Graham Chase Robinson, $632,142 for each of the charges.
Robinson, 41, worked for De Niro in various positions, from executive assistant to VP of production and finance between 2008 and April 2019. The legal dispute between Robinson and Canal Productions commenced in August 2019, when Canal filed a lawsuit against former employee Robinson, in which they alleged she had stolen millions of Delta SkyMiles, spent thousands on Uber rides and fancy dinners while being a lazy worker who neglected her duties.

Readers of the recent case against De Niro from his ex-assistant will now see a New York jury award his ex-assistant $1.26 million after issuing a verdict that had taken the jurors the length of Killers of the Flower Moon‘s runtime after a single day of deliberations to reach. According to The Hollywood Reporter, De Niro was also found not personally liable in this case. They report, “Additionally, the jury rejected the actor’s counterclaim that she stole 5 million frequent flyer miles from the company.”

Robert De Niro’s Canal Productions to Pay Ex-Assistant $1.26M in Gender Discrimination Trial Verdict
A New York jury has awarded Robert De Niro’s former assistant $1.26 million in her lawsuit against the A-lister’s loan-out company, Canal Productions, for gender discrimination and retaliation, according to a representative for plaintiff Graham Chase Robinson. De Niro was not found personally liable in the case.
Additionally, the jury rejected the actor’s counterclaim that she stole 5 million frequent flyer miles from the company.
Jurors took roughly four hours over a single day of deliberations to reach the verdict. De Niro was not present in the courtroom when the decision was announced.
The trial centered on fallout from when Robinson, who was employed by De Niro’s Canal Productions from 2008 to 2019 in various positions from executive assistant to vp of production and finance, left the company. It involved accusations that De Niro subjected her to vulgar comments and assigned her domestic duties, like buttoning his shirt and washing his sheets,...

Robert De Niro’s company Canal Productions was found to be liable in the gender discrimination trial brought by his former employee, Graham Chase Robinson, a jury ruled on Thursday. De Niro himself was not found to be liable. The jury ruled that Robinson should be awarded $1,264,285.72 by Canal for non-monetary and monetary damages.
Canal Productions was found liable on gender discrimination and retaliation and ordered to pay Robinson $632,142.86 on both counts.
Robinson was found to be not liable in the breach of fiduciary duty and loyalty while she was an employee at Canal. She originally sued De Niro and Canal for $12 million for gender discrimination and retaliation; she was countersued for $6 million for allegedly transferring thousands of dollars of sky miles to her own account and charging the company her personal food and travel expenses.

For a while, Zack Snyder was building a cinematic universe for the Netflix streaming service that centered on his zombie movie Army of the Dead. The film was quickly followed by a prequel called Army of Thieves, a sequel was being written, and an anime series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was in the works. But Snyder has since shifted his focus over to building a multi-media universe around his upcoming Netflix sci-fi film Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire (and its follow-up Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver). So Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas sits unfinished… and during an interview with Total Film magazine, Snyder revealed that Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon aren’t entirely separate. In fact, if Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas ever gets completed, we’ll be seeing a Rebel Moon crossover on the show!

The longtime personal assistant suing Robert De Niro took the stand Friday to testify in her civil discrimination lawsuit, saying the “Taxi Driver” actor gave a clear example of his chronic mistreatment when he angrily yelled at her during his own testimony earlier this week.
Graham Chase Robinson appeared before a Manhattan federal jury that is weighing claims from each side against the other. She says De Niro do demeaning “domestic” tasks below her station and is seeking $12 million for gender discrimination; he initially sued her, seeking $6 million for allegedly stealing airline miles and slacking off on the job.
De Niro testified on Tuesday, becoming agitated and testy under questioning from Robinson’s lawyer – and at one point, addressing her directly and saying: “Shame on you, Chase Robinson!” He apologized on the spot, but has not appeared in court since.

Graham Chase Robinson, ex-employee to Robert De Niro and former VP of production and finance at his Canal Productions, took the stand in a New York court Friday in the ongoing trial regarding gender discrimination and retaliation charges against the actor.
Robinson was hired as De Niro’s executive assistant in 2008 and later became the VP of his loan-out company. In her lawsuit, she alleged that De Niro treated her like an “office wife” and gave her gendered tasks to do, like mending his clothes, vacuuming his apartment and scratching his back. She also claimed that he called her a “bitch” and a “brat” and that a male employee, whose job was of equal standing to hers, was paid more than her. De Niro has denied these claims, saying through his lawyers that when Robinson was promoted to VP in 2017, her duties of coordinating his personal and professional life stayed the same.

When her attorney asked the actor about whether he made her scratch his back, he insisted he was “never weird or creepy” and then turned to his accuser. “Shame on you, Chase Robinson!” he chided.

Robert De Niro continued his testimony in court Tuesday on the charges of gender discrimination and retaliation filed against him by a former employee, exclaiming multiple times that the case was “nonsense.”
“The whole case is nonsense. It’s absurd. But I’m here!” De Niro said while being questioned by the plaintiff’s counsel.
De Niro frequently pushed back against questions and on lines of questioning that included whether he had called his former employee, Graham Chase Robinson, while using the bathroom (“Give me a break with this nonsense. The trial on gender discrimination and retaliation charges against Robert De Niro and his loan-out company, Canal Productions, began Monday in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, with De Niro taking the stand as the first witness.
The trial arises out of claims brought by Graham Chase Robinson, Canal’s former vp of production and finance, who alleged that De Niro had made “vulgar, inappropriate and gendered comments” to Robinson, underpaid her based on her gender and overworked her, calling her a “spoiled brat” in an expletive-filled voicemail, when she did not pick up a phone call. Additionally she alleges that she was still asked to perform gendered tasks, such as mending clothing and doing laundry, while an executive, among other allegations.
“Robert De Niro is someone who has clung to old mores,” the complaint states. “He does not accept the idea that men should treat women as equals.

Opening arguments in a workplace civil case pitting actor Robert De Niro against his former executive assistant, Graham Chase Robinson, will begin this afternoon in a federal courtroom in Manhattan, with De Niro himself expected to testify today under direct examination by one of Robinson’s lawyers.
An eight-person jury has been chosen Monday to hear the case, which Judge Lewis J. Liman said will take two weeks. Jurors will have to decide claims contained in dueling lawsuits filed in 2019: whether the Killers of the Flower Moon star subjected Robinson to gender harassment and underpaid her in violation of New York laws, and whether Robinson, who quit the job 2019, misused funds while at De Niro’s company, Canal, and took valuables when she left.

In August 2019, Robert De Niro sued his former assistant, Graham Chase Robinson, for binge-watching Friends on the job and stealing millions of frequent-flyer miles in what was suspected to be a prelude to a larger, bitter legal battle — a preemptive strike in anticipation of unsavory accusations to come. That came true two months later when Robinson filed her own lawsuit, near the precipice of the #MeToo movement, accusing De Niro of gender discrimination and retaliation, along with trying to convince the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office to prosecute her for stealing from the actor’s loan-out company.
The dueling claims, which were largely expected to settle, are now set to go to trial on Monday in New York federal court, with De Niro expected to take the stand after opening statements. The eight-part series is the first to emerge from Cathay Film Company, a recent production venture launched by Singapore-based industry veteran Meileen Choo.

As meta as it gets, The Movie Emperor (Hong Tan Xian Sheng) stars Hong Kong superstar Andy Lau as superstar Dany Lau, a box-office hero desperate to validate his career with critics. When “Jackie Chen” wins a Hong Kong film award for portraying a peasant farmer, Lau decides to put together his own epic about rural poverty and “fatherly love” as his ticket to film-festival success. Yes, Lau is essentially playing himself in this complex comedy, the closing title at this year’s Busan International Film Festival. What’s more, Lin Hao, the director of the project, is played by the actual Movie Emperor director Ning Hao, whose Crazy Stone helped set a new direction for mainland Chinese comedies back in 2006.
Real-life celebrities (e.g. Tony Leung Ka-fai and Wong Jing) are sprinkled throughout. It’s one of the ways Ning Hao erases boundaries between the real and fake Lau.

The enduring popularity of the Asian LGBT and horror genres and the relationship with giant streamer Netflix were among the topics of discussion at a lively panel focusing on distribution at the Busan International Film Festival’s Asian Contents and Film Market.
“I hate the fact that all the producers want to work with Netflix, it is also killing international sales as well. Because if all the big titles go to Netflix, it leaves very little room for independent distributors,” said Chen Shao-Yi, general manager at Screenworks Asia. “We also love Netflix because they give us money, so it’s truly a love-hate relationship.”
Chen’s fellow panelists were Nelson Mok, agent at WME Independent and Valeska Neu, international sales agent at Films Boutique and the panel was moderated by Lorna Tee, curator of Malaysian film incubator program Mylab.

A federal judge threw out the conviction of Hernan Lopez, former head of Fox International Channels, who had been found guilty of bribing FIFA soccer officials in exchange for a broadcasting-rights deal.
“We are obviously pleased with Judge Chen’s thorough and correct decision,” David Sarratt, a lawyer for Lopez, said in a statement to the AP. “We have never stopped believing in our client’s innocence.”
Lopez, who after leaving Fox founded podcast network Wondery, was convicted in March 2023 by a jury on charges that he participated in a scheme to bribe South American soccer officials in order to secure exclusive broadcasting rights for 21st Century Fox. In addition, sports marketing company Full Play Group was found guilty for its part in the alleged scheme.
In a Sept. 1 ruling, U.S. District Judge Pamela Chen granted Lopez’s motion for acquittal and also overturned the conviction of Full Play.

A New York federal judge tossed a conviction of former 21st Century Fox executive and Wondery podcast startup founder Hernan Lopez on Friday night. Lopez was convicted earlier this year of bribing FIFA soccer officials with millions of dollars in exchange for lucrative media and marketing rights to international tournaments and events, including the World Cup.
Lopez was charged alongside Carlos Martinez, another Fox executive, with wire fraud and money laundering and was accused of using shell companies and sham consulting contracts to conceal or disguise bribes and kickback payments. Prosecutors had said that the bribes helped them obtain confidential bidding information, as well as bringing the U.S. broadcasting rights to Fox for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup competitions.
Martinez was acquitted at trial, but Lopez was convicted in March.

As she struggles through Mandarin calligraphy classes, Ever blossoms socially with the help of Sophie Ha (Chelsea Zhang), and she further solidifies her desire to pursue dancing as her dream career, not the practical path of medical school that her parents have coached her into since they came to the United States from Taiwan. Berlin, Aug 5 (Ians) The Chinese diving team swept all four synchronized golds on offer at the 2023 World Aquatics World Cup Berlin Super Final here.
Chinese pair Chen Yuxi and Quan Hongchan led after each round in the women’s synchro 10m, the first event of the tournament. The two-time world champions executed three dives that earned more than 80 points apiece to inflate their winning 362.76-point tally, 74.76 points ahead of runners-up Caeli McKay and Kate Miller of Canada, reports Xinhua.
“The Berlin Super Final is very important for us and we take it very seriously. But it’s a tight schedule after the World Championships, and we didn’t have much time to rest. Actually we’re not very satisfied with our dives today,” said 17-year-old Chen.
Chen paired with Quan to claim the World Championships title in the synchronized platform twice, and World Cup gold on many occasions, but the...

A former Fox News reporter was ordered by a federal judge to reveal the identity of a confidential source, a highly unusual case of a plaintiff’s right to legal discovery being placed above the First Amendment protections of a journalist.
The ruling, issued by Judge Christopher Cooper of the US District Court for the District of Columbia, ordered now-CBS News senior correspondent Catherine Herridge to disclose her source in depositions. The reporting was for a series of 2017 articles about a Chinese-American scientist, who subsequently sued the U.S. government for privacy invasion; Herridge was a staff reporter for Fox News when the stories were published.
The order corresponded to a lawsuit filed by Yanping Chen against the FBI and other federal investigative agencies, alleging that Chen’s privacy was violated when Herridge reported that the scientist was the subject of a federal counterintelligence investigation. Chen says the information was improperly leaked by federal authorities,...
