The film of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats” arrives without so much buzz as hisses thanks to a trailer released back in July which seemed to horrify more than to suggest a beloved fantasy musical that has, according to provided production information, been staged for over 81 million people in more than 50 countries and in 19 languages since its London premiere in 1981.
In its original theatrical presentation, “Cats” was weird, yes, but also an admirably immersive, intimate blend of junkyard pizzazz, busy makeup, leg warmers, T.S. Eliot rhymes and Webber earworms that, in its nonsensical Jellicle-osity, added up to something reasonably transportive. It never purred, but it pranced, preened and projected enough to be cat-video distracting, even as it augured decades of stage musicals that favored the flashy over the finely tuned.
But Tom Hooper’s jarring fever dream of a spectacle is like something that escaped from Dr. Moreau’s creature...

Universal has released the first trailer for its film adaptation of the Broadway play, “Cats,” starring Taylor Swift, Jennifer Hudson and James Corden.
Based on the book “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot, the musical follows the Jellicle cats, a family of felines who go before the group’s leader Old Deuteronomy to see who will be selected to travel to the Heaviside layer for a new life. The original musical won six Tony awards.
However, in this iteration, things are a little different. Instead of actors dressed as cats, as many fans are familiar with in the Broadway production, director Tony Hooper opted to use motion-capture technology, meaning the cats will actually appear as singing furry felines.
The already star-studded cast is completed with another team of big names including Judi Dench (Old Deuteronomy), Rebel Wilson (Jennyanydots), Steven McRae (Skimbleshanks), Ian McKellen (Gus), Jason Derulo...

Universal and Working Title’s feature adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical Cats has started filming with the studios announcing the official parts to many of the castmembers who have already been announced, i.e. Taylor Swift who will play Bombalurina, James Corden as Bustopher Jones, and as many have surmised, Jennifer Hudson is Grizabella.
Also starring is Dame Judi Dench as Old Deuteronomy, Jason Derulo as Rum Tum Tugger, Idris Elba as Macavity, Sir Ian McKellen as Gus, Rebel Wilson as Jennyanydots and Francesca Hayward as Victoria. Deadline exclusively broke many of the Cats castings.
Many have wondered how Cats will appear on screen, and the Tom Hooper-directed production is using a new technology to transform cast members into a vivid new vision of their characters.
Hooper adapted with Lee Hall (Billy Elliot), and is producing with Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner, as well as Debra Hayward,...

Exclusive: Hamilton‘s Andy Blankenbuehler has been set to choreograph Universal Pictures and Working Title’s big screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats. The three-time Tony Award winner was already part of the extended Cats family, having choreographed the recent Broadway revival. I understand he boards the project, which starts production in early December, after scheduling conflicts with the Royal Ballet arose for Wayne McGregor. Directed by Tom Hooper, Cats is set for a December 20, 2019 theatrical release.
Blankenbuehler received the 2018 Kennedy Center Honors for his work on Hamilton, for which he also won a Tony and an Olivier. His other Tonys were for Bandstand and In The Heights. Further Broadway credits include Bring It On, 9 To 5, The People In The Picture, The Apple Tree and Annie. He was Tony-nominated for Bring It On and 9 To 5. Blankenbuehler’s upcoming projects include the new musical Only Gold with British singer/songwriter Kate Nash.

Exclusive: Count Rebel Wilson in as part of Tom Hooper’s upcoming feature adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Cats for Universal and Working Title.
Wilson will portray the old Gumbie cat Jennyanydots, who has a reputation for being lazy. In Cats lore she’s known to spend her days seeking out the warm and sunny spots where she sits, and sits, and sits, and sleeps as the hours tick by. But when the moon rises, she’s alive and bakes and fries, and teaches the mice “knitting, crocheting and tatting.” On top of that, she employs the cockroaches to be her troop of helpful boy scouts.
The Cats cast has been rehearsing at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, UK for a December 20, 2019 theatrical release. Wilson joins a huge ensemble that includes Jennifer Hudson (Grizabella), Taylor Swift, James Corden, Ian McKellen (Gus the Theatre Cat), Judi Dench (Deuteronomy), Idris Elba...

Exclusive: Steven McRae, Principal Dancer of The Royal Ballet, has joined the cast of Universal Pictures and Working Title’s Cats in the role of Skimbleshanks.
In the Andrew Lloyd Webber stage musical, Skimbleshanks is an older ginger tabby cat who considers himself very important within the tribe. His main role is to work on the mail trains traveling at nighttime, which he considers a vital contribution to the Jellicles and sings about in the song “Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat”.
McRae is the second Principal Dancer from The Royal Ballet after Francesca Hayward to join the film adaptation of the Lloyd Webber musical directed by Oscar winner Tom Hooper. Hayward, as Deadline previously reported, will play a new role, Victoria, the white kitten. The Nutcracker goes global in Royal Ballet's trip to the cinema; Altynai Asylmuratova makes the leap in St Petersburg
• Christmas traditionally provides rich pickings for dance fans who can't make it to live shows – and the season starts this Thursday with two very different offerings.
From the Royal Ballet comes a live screening of The Nutcracker, to be shown in cinemas worldwide, and with a cast including Laura Morera and Federico Bonelli as the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Prince; Gary Avis as Drosselmeyer, Francesca Hayward as Clara and Alexander Campbell as the Nutcracker.
For anyone phobic to pink satin and snowflakes, the Tate Modern is hosting a minimalist alternative, a live streaming (at 20:00 GMT) of a new duet by Daniel Linehan, in which the dancers movements are in dialogue with sequences of words projected on the walls of the performance space.
