The Avett Brothers have announced their first new album in five years. The self-titled LP, produced by Rick Rubin, arrives on May 17th via Ramseur Records/American Recordings/Thirty Tigers. As a preview, the band has unveiled the lead single, “Love of A Girl.”
There’s a hopeful, free, careless energy to “Love of a Girl,” which capitalizes on the band’s ability to mesh their folks roots with rock elements and pop catchiness. The grounded lyrics focus on finding meaning in even the most everyday elements, like a store-bought bouquet of flowers, coffee cups, school buses, and the first introduction to heartbreak.
The forthcoming record was recorded primarily in Malibu’s Shangri-La Studios, with additional recording done in Nashville, Mar Vista, and the band’s hometown of Concord, North Carolina.

Todd Snider hunkered down during the first year or so of the pandemic, and like some musicians suddenly knocked off the road, he took to online music-making — but with a unique twist. The cover was recorded during the band’s visit to Mountain Stage, NPR Music, and West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s long-running live radio show and features as the opening track on an upcoming compilation highlighting performances from the series.
“As a gratefully, if not begrudgingly, Earth-bound band, it’s always an honor and a challenge to tackle any of David Bowie’s space-soaring arrangements,” Wilco said in a statement.

The most common question at the annual AmericanaFest – a SXSW-style multi-venue music festival held in Nashville since 2000 – is “what is Americana?” “Diverse” seems to be the answer, after decades of favouritism shown towards white, male country singers.
At the event’s opening awards ceremony, which takes place at The Ryman, aka country music’s “mother church”, the sensational Canadian songwriter Allison Russell picks up a well-deserved Album of the Year for her illuminating solo debut Outside Child. Other gongs go to bluesy husband-and-wife duo The War and Treaty, flamboyant gypsy jazz renegade Sierra Ferrell, and the Grammys-conquering LGBT+ icon Brandi Carlile. There’s still room for the old guard, too. Robert Plant, Chris Isaak and Lyle Lovett all make appearances, as does the great Lucinda Williams, while tribute is paid to late honky tonk singer-songwriter Luke Bell, who died last month aged 32.
Aside from the established names, AmericanaFest is also a hotbed of young talent.

Early James doesn’t like it when his lyrics sound too straightforward. The Alabama singer-songwriter tends to approach things obliquely, adding an air of mystery and haziness that doesn’t just spell it all out. Sometimes he even does it to his detriment.
“I like to confuse myself by what I even mean,” James says. “It’s like, what do you mean by that? I’m like, ‘That’s a fun turn of phrase. Does it make sense? No, not yet.’ And then you just make it make sense.”

Following her mainstage set at FloydFest last weekend, in front of a raucous crowd of thousands, singer-songwriter Morgan Wade takes a seat on a couch backstage. Between sips of coffee, a slight grin emerges on her face when asked what the performance meant to her.
“I grew up about three miles from here,” the 27-year-old “Wilder Days” singer tells Rolling Stone, “so I was able to get my dad to drop me off today, which was really nice.”
For Wade, FloydFest is all but where she entered the big time.

In advance of their forthcoming studio album, Dropout Boogie, the Black Keys have dropped the neo-soul banger “It Ain’t Over,” marking the second glimpse of the record following the March release of lead single “Wild Child.”
Dropout Boogie, out May 13 on Nonesuch Records, marks the blues rock duo’s eleventh studio album — and, in a weird twist of fate, the record will be released one day before the twentieth anniversary of the group’s first full-length, The Big Come Up. “Watching bands come and go, it’s fucking insane that we’re still here.

Sierra Ferrell mixes country, folk, bluegrass and a hefty dose of jazz on her debut album Long Time Coming. The West Virginia native, who has turned heads with her captivating live performances and nomad-like backstory, will release the LP via Rounder Records on August 20th.
The album news arrives with the new song and music video “The Sea,” a trippy, atmospheric number that finds Ferrell singing in a woozy vibrato and producing haunting sounds on a saw. The video matches the freaky vibe of the music, with Ferrell bathed in...

Old Crow Medicine Show’s Ketch Secor goes it alone in the new song “Quarantined” — but he sure would like to have some company. A lighthearted ode to be being separated from the one you love, the track finds the man-out-of-time musician suffering through two full weeks without as much as an embrace.
“I wanna hug you and hold you tight/but I gotta wait 14 nights,” Secor sings in the ragtime number, lamenting the sad truth that “one little cough can kill us all.” He even works in a reference...

The 2020 edition of the Luck Reunion has announced its lineup. Lucinda Williams, Orville Peck, Margo Price, and perennial Luck headliner Willie Nelson are all set to perform at the daylong festival held on Nelson’s Luck Ranch outside of Austin.
Slated for March 19th, the Luck Reunion brings together left-of-center artists who are both preserving and progressing American music. Luck is also defined by frequent collaboration and a sense of intimacy, especially for the lucky few who pack the ranch’s “Chapel Stage.” This year, the Haden Triplets, Sierra Ferrell,...

Trampled by Turtles will release a new digital covers Ep on Friday. Cheekily titled Sigourney Fever, the project includes the roots band’s unique renditions of songs by Neil Young, Iris DeMent, Warren Zevon, Radiohead, and the Faces.
Ahead of the Ep’s release, the group premieres their take on “Ooh La La,” the nostalgic 1973 singalong from the Faces.
