Actress Karen Gillian, who plays the leading character Sam in the action film ‘Gundpowder Milkshake’, said that the way her character can use all sorts of weapons is what she found most exciting. Talking about her character in the film, Karen said: “Sam is so cool. First, she is incredible at fighting and can handle all the different types of combat and use all sorts of different weapons that I’ve personally never heard of or seen before. Tackling that is always really exciting.”
She added: “But the character has also got such depth: she’s a woman who is completely lost. In her mind she was abandoned by her mother when she was a child and she’s suffering from the sense of loss and lack of self-worth because she felt there wasn’t enough to keep her mother around, so she has abandonment issues.”

Buenos Aires-based FilmSharks subsidiary The Remake Company has closed a remake deal with Italy’s Marco Belardi and his new label Bamboo Prod. for Ariel Winograd’s latest film “Today We Fix the World” (“Hoy se Arregla el Mundo”).
Produced by powerhouse shingle Patagonik, the family dramedy was picked up by Netflix for several key territories after its theatrical release by Disney’s Star early this year.
Mexico’s BH5 has also acquired the remake rights and is about to produce its version while talks are underway with Korean and French companies, said FilmSharks founder and CEO, Guido Rud. Winograd is already a known quantity in Italy. His last film “Ten Days Without Mom” topped the box office in Italy when it was released.
Dramedy stars Leonardo Sbaraglia from “Wild Tales” and “Pain and Glory” who finds out that he’s not the biological father of the nine-year-old boy at home.

Heaven’s Grate: Keshales Settles for Watered Down Tropes in English Debut
Nearly a decade ago, directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado promised to usher in a new dawn of genre-flavored Israeli cinema with their first two offerings, Rabies (2010) and the somewhat controversial Big Bad Wolves (2013). Both have been wooed by English language filmmaking, pursing their own solo projects as director with Papushado unveiling Gunpowder Milkshake and Keshales offering up South of Heaven (which features Papushado as screenwriter alongside Kai Mark). Marrying a clutch of familiar narrative tropes, including the veritable Hitchcockian ‘wrong man’ syndrome and cancer melodrama, ‘nice guys’ may finish last, but they make it to the end credits—-unfortunately, there’s not enough characterization to care by the time we get there.…...

Any time a guy in a fancy coat says, “I’ll go ahead and explain. I’m a businessman,” it’s safe to assume you’re in for a parade of cliches. Or it would be, if the malicious parole officer and cancer patient wife weren’t already a dead giveaway of the kind of humorless melodrama on display in “South of Heaven,” starring Jason Sudeikis and Evangeline Lilly. It’s too bad that television’s favorite nice guy had to hone his Southern accent in such a dirge of a crime drama — it makes his dopey ex-con Jimmy feel like Ted Lasso’s charmless no-good cousin.
Filming for “South of Heaven” took place in March 2020; just before the pandemic upended the movie business (and everything else), and a few months before the first season of “Ted Lasso” debuted, which soon became an Emmy-winning hit. Had Sudeikis known what success lay in store for him,...

With the Emmy-decorated, too-many-people’s-favorite-show-to-count triumph of his role on “Ted Lasso,” Jason Sudeikis has joined the rarefied club of all-stops-out comedians who make the transition to becoming full-on dramatic actors. That said, “Ted Lasso” is a drama streaked with comedy. So you could say that Sudeikis, for all the adoration and acclaim he’s earned, still hasn’t quite entered the fabled upper echelon of the “All comedians want to play Hamlet — but only a few get to do it” stratosphere.
That may explain why he signed on to play the lead role in “South of Heaven,” a seedy indie romantic crackpot noir, set in Texas, that casts him as a convict doing all he can to stay out of trouble. At first, the movie seems like a variation on “Straight Time,” the 1978 Dustin Hoffman drama that’s still one of the most authentic films of its era about...

This article contains spoilers for Gunpowder Milkshake.
Gunpowder Milkshake has many strong qualities, but the movie’s character work isn’t one of them. The Netflix film is visually vibrant featuring crisp and clever fight sequences, but drops the ball when it comes to story, forgetting to make a case for why we should care about the group of woman assassins at its center. It’s a shame because the film brings together an incredible cast of women—including Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh, and Carla Gugino—to play the queer found family ostensibly at the heart of this story. Gunpowder Milkshake‘s inability to commit to its fun “be gay, do crimes” vibes is one of the film’s biggest missed opportunities. Let’s discuss…
To call the queerness in Gunpowder Milkshake “subtext” would probably be inaccurate, but the neo-noir never chooses to make its queerness explicit either.

In Netflix’s new action-thriller “Gunpowder Milkshake,” the library is a central feature of the film. It serves as a resource for the assassins who are being hunted, and the assassins who are doing the hunting.
Karen Gillan stars as Sam, the rogue assassin in question. When she goes on her mission, one stop she makes is to the library, run by Madeleine. Also working in the library are Florence (Michelle Yeoh) and Anna May (Angela Bassett). But they’re no ordinary librarians. They supply weapons. And the books are no ordinary books — they conceal weapons.
The library also features at the center of a finale shoot-out. Production designer David Scheunemann says that once it was established the library would be its own character, “we decided not to do your average library. It would define the space and the librarians.”

Sam (Karen Gillan) will see Deadpool’s Hello Kitty backpack, and raise you a bright yellow duffel bag, with a simple “I heart kittens” on the side. It was arguably one of the best jokes of the film, but according to “Gunpowder Milkshake” co-writer and director Navot Papushado, that bag was meant to be more than just a gag.
“We spent a lot of time creating a color palette and deciding what colors mean to us,” Papushado tells TheWrap. “What the color blue would mean? Maybe it’s more of The Firm, [the organization Sam works for]. What would the color brown mean? It’s more earthy. What would the color orange mean? It symbolized change. And what would the color yellow mean? And we decided straight from the get-go, the color yellow represents death.”

Karen Gillan will never forget her summer in Berlin as the filming of Gunpowder Milkshake challenged the Scottish actor like never before. In Navot Papushado’s stylish actioner, Gillan plays an assassin named Sam who’s haunted by her mother’s (Lena Headey) abandonment 15 years earlier. But when a job goes wrong, Sam has to reconcile her past while protecting a little girl named Emily (Chloe Coleman) from her handler, Nathan (Paul Giamatti), and her fellow hired guns. Since Gillan’s commitment to Jumanji: The Next Level preceded Gunpowder, she’s particularly grateful for Jumanji and Mission: Impossible stunt coordinator Wade Eastwood for giving her a fighting chance ...

Asako I & II (Ryūsuke Hamaguchi)
Full-fledged, complicated, rapturous romance is relatively rare in cinema nowadays, and one of the very best examples is Ryūsuke Hamaguchi’s Asako I & II, which uses its doubled lovers as a way to reflect back upon its main character, in all of her doubts and uncertainties. Deeply rooted in its present moment, yet prone to flights of fancy as transportive and unreal as any in contemporary filmmaking, the film delights as much as it aches, staying in close step with the turns caused by the whims of the self and the other, moving back and forth in rapture. – Ryan S.

Here’s the kind of movie that “Gunpowder Milkshake” is. It’s a rogue-assassin-hunting-down-the-assassins-who-are-hunting-her thriller, starring a charismatically affectless Karen Gillan as Sam, the rogue in question. At one point she finds herself in a car with an 8-year-old girl, Emily (Chloe Coleman), who she has just rescued from a kidnapping. She’s teaching the girl how to maneuver around an underground parking garage, propping her up in the driver’s seat and letting her take the wheel, when they’re confronted by several vehicles full of hooligans brandishing automatic weapons.
What follows is a cat-and-mouse car chase. But does Sam take control and put Emily in the passenger seat? Of course not. The girl, with one minute of driving lessons behind her, keeps on driving, with Sam issuing instructions (“Don’t worry about the bullets! Reverse…Now! Hard left! Put it in drive! That’s it! Hard left — Go go go!

There’s no shortage of underworld assassin action flicks these days – some just trying to ride the success wave created by “John Wick,” others trying to take it in a different direction. Thankfully, Netflix has one in “Gunpowder Milkshake” that harkens back to the classic assassin films of yore while also throwing a little Tarantino flavor and color in the mix to create a fun, ultraviolent adventure with a feminist spin.

Gunpowder Milkshake is a movie that lives up to its title. For starters, it looks like sugar, with its candy-like aesthetic – it’s a visual treat from director Navot Papushado and one of the all-time great cinematographers, Michael Seresin. Seresin shot several of filmmaker Alan Parker’s films, including Angel Heart, Midnight Express, and the joyous Bugsy Malone. To say Papushado […]

Navot Papushado’s new movie, “Gunpowder Milkshake,” makes two promises and keeps them both: Spent chemical explosives and sweet dairy drinks. One comes in higher quantities than the other, much, much higher, but Papushado takes an approach to action that’s equally as sugary as the title’s latter half. No false advertising, just lots of bullets and arterial spray. You can have a milkshake, as a treat.

Considering the pervasive aesthetic influence of John Wick on modern action cinema, it was only a matter of time before variations and riffs on the gun-fu formula would follow. Every genre passes through a natural cycle from experimental to classic to revisionist stages before finally ending in the dead zone of parody, an evolution as a byproduct of capitalist hunger and artistic reinvention.
Sporting a retro-neon design and showcasing overly grotesque, misogynist villains going up against stoically lethal female protagonists, Navot Papushado’s Gunpowder Milkshake is certainly aware of the tropes and gender roles it wants to upend. But for the film’s plodding first half, it doesn’t seem to be having any fun doing just that.
Inside a blood-soaked room lined with dead men, the first scene finds super assassin Sam (Karen Gillan) in the midst of dispatching a herd of heavies for a shadowy syndicate called The Firm.

What if you could go back to the ’90s and early ’00s and remake all those self-consciously absurdist, ironically nihilistic action thrillers, but with women in the lead? You’d probably get something a lot like “Gunpowder Milkshake,” a pop-culture pastiche that feels persistently retro — and not in a good way.
Navot Papushado’s follow-up to his Israeli cult fave “Big Bad Wolves” sure looks promising: Lena Headey, Michelle Yeoh, Carla Gugino and Angela Bassett lead an assassin group called the Librarians, who serve as mentors for up-and-coming hitwoman Sam.
Is it absolutely thrilling to see female icons in their 40s, 50s and 60s cast as take-no-prisoners badasses? Sure is. Is it totally dispiriting to watch their considerable talents increasingly wasted? Of course.
We do begin with a milkshake, in a 1950s diner, a recurring set that evokes unflattering comparisons to the thoughtfully-conjured vintage darkness of “Riverdale.” Preteen Sam gets...

‘Gunpowder Milkshake’ Review: Karen Gillan Kicks Butt in Kitschy, Colorful Netflix Assassin Actioner
Subtlety isn’t on offer in Navot Papushado’s assassin actioner “Gunpowder Milkshake,” though nearly everything else is, from enough neon lights to make Vegas jealous, a nefarious group of bad men known as “The Firm,” to Karen Gillan beating up baddies with a panda-shaped suitcase, blood the consistency of Jell-o, and an extended sequence involving Michelle Yeoh killing dudes with a chain. These aren’t even the highlights, but simply a brief selection of standouts moments from the Netflix Original, which . Featuring Karen Gillan in a genuinely butt-kicking role, Papushado’s film joins a growing sub-genre of all-female action outings, but its winking sense of humor seems primed to help it stand out.

Career killer gets stuck with a cute kid. It’s a great story premise, and one that has led to many a action movie classic, from True Grit to Terminator 2. In Gunpowder Milkshake, the Netflix neon noir from Israeli director Navot Papushado, the set-up works its magic again. Here, the career killer is professional assassin Sam (Karen Gillan), who learned the family business from single mom Scarlet (Game of Thrones‘ Lena Headey) before she abandoned Sam 15 years ago after a job gone wrong. When Sam gets hired by all-powerful shadow organization The Firm to retrieve some stolen money, it seems like just another case… until she realizes 8-year-old Emily’s (Big Little Lies‘ Chloe Coleman) life is at stake. Sam is no hero. She does terrible things in this very movie, but, like other action movie killers before her, Sam has a code: she draws the line at children getting killed,...

A neon-colored action flick that doesn’t pay homage to recent genre hits so much as openly ape them, Navot Papushado’s Gunpowder Milkshake takes a femme-centric approach to the uber-assassin format, looking especially eager to get in on that hot Wickiverse world-building action. Though not without its moments, the film offers too little of interest for its leading ladies to do, and feels throughout like an adaptation of a comic book that was written for the sole purpose of being sold to an IP-hungry film studio.

The first single from the upcoming film “Gunpowder Milkshake” has been released. Composed by Frank Ilfman (“Big Bad Wolves”), “Goonfight at Gutterball Corral” fuses indie-rock with a spaghetti Western style, further mixed with a large orchestra and soprano vocal.
Directed and co-written by Navot Papushado (also known for”Big Bad Wolves”), the film debuts on Netflix on July 14, along with the motion picture soundtrack. “Gunpowder Milkshake” follows Sam (Karen Gilan), a deadly assassin who was abandoned by her mother, Scarlett (Lena Headley) — also an assassin, just deadlier — at 12 years old. Sam is raised by The Firm, a ruthless crime syndicate her mother worked for. Soon enough, Sam is forced to choose between The Firm and protecting the life of an innocent 8-year-old girl, Emily, who gets caught up in the deadly web.
Ilfman chose to create signature motifs for each character that repeat throughout, and remain, like catchy earworms, long after the credits have rolled.

When casting the role of Sam for his film “Gunpowder Milkshake,” which hits Netflix July 14, co-writer/director Navot Papushado knew he had a tall order to fill. The role of the deadly assassin required a bona fide movie star, someone who could carry an entire film and appear in almost every scene. She had to have action skills to be able to execute elaborate fight choreography often done in one long take without a double. And not just traditional action scenes — we’re talking some of the most inventive fights committed to film in recent memory, including a sequence where Sam can’t move her arms on her own so she has weapons strapped to her hands while using the rest of her body to propel their movement. She also had to possess some real dramatic chops, as Sam shares deeply emotional scenes with the eight-year-old girl she rescues and she risks everything to protect.

Michelle Yeoh is set to star as Scian opposite Laurence O’Fuarain in The Witcher: Blood Origin, Netflix’s prequel to its hit series based on the novels behind the popular videogame franchise.
Scian is the very last of her nomadic tribe of sword-elves. No one can comes close to her artistry with the blade, and no one carries as much loss within their heart. When a chance presents itself to retrieve a stolen sacred sword, taken from her fallen tribe by nefarious means, she launches herself into a deadly quest that will change the outcome of the Continent.

Netflix has released the trailer for its upcoming summer action tentpole “Gunpowder Milkshake,” starring Karen Gillan. The actress is best known for her role as Nebula in the Marvel Cinematic Universe flicks, plus her performance in two “Jumanji” movies. Gillan plays a third-generation for-hire assassin forced to work in tandem with her estranged mother, played by “Game of Thrones” star Lena Headey.
The women must team up to stop a cycle of violence led by a male-dominated crime syndicate, presided over by the always deliciously nefarious Paul Giamatti. Along the way they encounter a slew of ass-kicking women, played by a veritable embarrassment of riches in Oscar nominee Angela Bassett (“Black Panther”), Michelle Yeoh, and Carla Gugino (“Sin City”).

When you give your movie a name like “Gunpowder Milkshake,” you are making a very specific promise to potential audiences: This thing is going to be violent as hell and somehow hilariously adorable too. I have no idea if the actual movie will deliver but I’m pleased to report that the official trailer definitely does.
Per the official logline, in the film “a secret sisterhood of female assassins, over the course of a single night, fight to stop a cycle of violence while coming to the aid of a mother-daughter assassin duo.” Karen Gillan stars as Sam, the daughter part of that duo and the newest member of that sisterhood, with Lena Headey playing her mom.
And based on this delightful trailer, we’re guessing the plot kicks off when Sam decides not to kill her latest target, a young girl. Jokes and a ton of brutal violence ensues.
