- Largely self-taught bop jazz trombonist. Began in Billy Butterfield's band and subsequently played with Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman and Kai Winding. Lots of session work in California during the 50s and 60s, including with Merv Griffin. Also formerly led his own orchestra, the 'Manhattan Wildlife Refuge Big Band'.
- At age 18, he joined the U.S. Navy; he attended the Navy School of Music in Virginia Beach, Virginia, then was stationed with a Navy Band unit in San Diego. He studied with Herbie Nichols and learned to read music for the first time.
