- He planned to follow his grandfather and late father into the plumbing business, but his family encouraged him to go to college. He graduated from what is now Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, where one of his friends was Ed Bradley, who became a longtime correspondent for "60 Minutes" on CBS.
- He was the longest-serving television news anchor in Washington DC, with more than 45 years at WRC-TV. After three years as a reporter, he was promoted to news anchor in 1972, one of the first black news anchors in major news markets. He also gave commentaries, often on sensitive racial topics.
