Disney’s D23 Expo in Anaheim once again demonstrated its unrivaled franchise power through Marvel, Lucasfilm, Disney and Pixar, as well as the unique mining of its animated legacy. And, in highlighting its social relevance, the emphasis was on diversity and unity in conquering prejudice and hate.
On Friday, the Expo was ecstatic over the hilarious clip of Vanellope (Sarah Silverman) getting snarky with all of the Disney princesses in “Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2” (November 21, 2018) — the ultimate Mouse House strut. It was also refreshing to learn that Holly Hunter’s mom, Helen/Elastagirl, will be the star of Brad Bird’s “Incredibles 2” (June 15, 2018), picks up where the last one left off in 2004, with the Underminer (John Ratzenberger) wreaking havoc.
However, on Saturday, Disney wowed them with clips and behind-the-scene footage from “Mary Poppins Returns,” “A Wrinkle in Time,” Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” and “The Lion King.

Mission: Impossible, Avengers, Dwayne Johnson, Jurassic World, Ant-Man and more are lining up to meet you next summer. Oh, and The Statham.
With summer blockbuster season 2017 in full swing, and with Fast & Furious 8 speeding over the $1bn mark already, a bunch of filmmakers are furiously putting together their films for release this time next year (or thereabouts). Here, as things stand, is the state of summer blockbuster season 2018. We’ve veered towards UK release dates on the whole, but as always, things can quickly change.
Also, we’ve not included unnamed films: Universal, for instance, has reserved a slot for one of its classic monster universe movies, but not told anybody what it is yet. As more information pops up, we’ll keep this list up to date…

When he’s not stealing the show in Kingsman: The Secret Service or plotting the future of the Jump Street franchise alongside Jonah Hill – that much-touted crossover with Men in Black has essentially ground to a halt, but James Bobin remains attached nonetheless – Channing Tatum is busy scooping up roles in Triple Frontier and Steven Soderberg’s Nascar heist pic Logan Lucky, while Gambit continues to languish in development hell.
But after saving the Potus in White House Down, Deadline brings word that Channing Tatum is ready to assume the presidential role himself for animated pic America: The Motion Picture. Matt Thompson is directing a script penned by Dave Callaham (The Expendables), with Tatum on board to voice George Washington. Perhaps most interesting of all, America: The Motion Picture is pitched as an R-rated feature that presents a revisionist take on the formation of the United States during the 18th century.

The cast of Han Solo continues to grow, with Westworld star Thandie Newton in talks to join the impressive ensemble. As per usual, there’s sadly no word on who she will be playing, and with the Expanded Universe no longer canon, we can’t even look there for any major clues.
This is a great bit of casting, though, and Newton is riding high after her recent stint in the HBO series mentioned above. Next up for her is Xavier Dolan’s The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, while season two of Westworld also begins shooting later this year. Han Solo will be squeezed in somewhere, but this doesn’t necessarily reveal the significance of her role.
With Disney shifting the focus to Star Wars: The Last Jedi in April to coincide with this year’s Celebration, chances are that it will be a...

Ben Affleck’s the latest in a series of directors to bow out of a DC comic book movie. We take a look at a familiar pattern...
In a ninja-like move worthy of the Caped Crusader himself, Ben Affleck has bowed out of The Batman. Affleck will, of course, still star in the title role and serve as producer, but the standalone Batman movie will now need a new director - leaving the position empty mere months before filming was supposed to commence.
The outlet that broke the story, Variety, adds that Affleck’s decision wasn’t related to the recent performance of Live By Night, the period crime film produced, written, directed and starring Ben Affleck. Rather, Affleck says, “I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film.

With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story currently dominating the box-office, well on its way to crossing the $1 billion threshold, even if you didn’t fully embrace the movie, it’s hard to withhold appreciation in how Gareth Edwards captured this well-trodden universe in a new aesthetic way. One can now get a glimpse at some of his directorial influences with the latest Sight & Sound poll at BFI, where the director gave his top 10 films of all-time.
“One of the first things I do is grab imagery and put together a document, a Pdf, that is just full of thousands of images,” Edwards told Complex. “For me, the films that I got a lot of images from were Apocalypse Now, Thin Red Line, Alien, Blade Runner, and a film called Baraka.” A few of these can be found in his list, which of course includes George Lucas‘ Star Wars, which...

The search for the new Hans Solo is one we’ve been following quite closely here at The Movie Bit, and not just because he’s the world’s most lovable space scoundrel. Ireland had a horse in the race, with the incredibly talented Jack Reynor (What Richard Did) one of the handful of actors in the narrowed down search. But now, according to Deadline, it seems the search may be coming to an end, and Mr. Reynor may be out of luck, with all signs point to Alden Ehrenreich, last seen stealing the show in Hail, Caesar! as ‘singing cowboy’ Hobie Doyle, as the man to don the iconic white shirt/black vest combo for Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s 2018 stand alone Han Solo movie. The news site is reporting that the actor has emerged as front runner, thanks to an impressive performance during screen tests, and official...

Miles Teller is one of many young actors up for the role of Han Solo in the A Star Wars Story movie being directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. During a recent interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor confirmed that he had actually auditioned for the role and in the process revealed that he had never seen the original Star Wars trilogy until a couple months before the audition.
“I had never even seen any of the original Star Wars movies until maybe a month or a couple weeks before my first audition because I was like, ‘I should check this out’ [Laughs]. It holds up. I just love Harrison Ford. I think that’s a great character. I love his brand, I mean so many guys would’ve played that part so wrong and he has humor at the right times. Harrison Ford is a very big actor,...

Disney, Lucasfilm, and directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are still on the hunt for an actor to play young Han Solo in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off film. As you might expect, finding someone to fill Harrison Ford's shoes has been a huge challenge. After narrowing the search from 2,500 actors down to about ten, THR reports that "a final shortlist has quietly emerged" for the coveted role.
Though the outlet cautions that there could still be a few other names on the list, they reveal that tests were conducted in London this past weekend that involved Alden Ehrenreich (Hail, Caesar!), Jack Reynor (Transformers: Age of Extinction), and Taron Egerton (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Eddie the Eagle). While Ehrenreich was terrific in Hail, Caesar!, I don't know if he's the best fit for the swaggering Solo. Of this trio, I'm leaning toward Egerton right now, but that's because I've...

...and then there were three (and maybe a few others). Disney has been holding "secret" auditions and tests for the lead of the "young Han Solo" spinoff movie for its "Star Wars" franchise, and the list of contenders bandied about has featured names like Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Dave Franco, Scott Eastwood, Logan Lerman, Emory Cohen, Blake Jenner, Nick Robinson, Colton Haynes, Max Thieriot, Leo Howard, Tony Oller, Chandler Riggs, Hunter Parrish, Rami Malek, Landon Liboiron, Ed Westwick, Tom Felton and Joshua Sasse (phew!) but it appears that the studio has found their final three.
