★★★★★ Shane Carruth's second feature, Upstream Colour (2013), following an almost decade-long gap since his debut, the enigmatic time-travel film Primer (2004), is a film that is difficult to adequately describe in the language normally used in film reviews. It defies genre conventions, features no recognisable stars, and has no central narrative hook. Upstream Colour will not be a rewarding experience for everyone who sees it, but it ought to be seen, nonetheless. A thief (Thiago Martins), forces Kris (Amy Seimetz) to ingest a grub found among the roots of a particular plant which gives him total control over her body and mind.

The Primer director's long-awaited second feature, about parasites that absorb identity, is freaky and strange – and attempts a colossal synch-up between the digital and cosmic worlds
Shane Carruth thoroughly earned his cult status in independent American cinema almost 10 years ago with a brilliant debut, a time-travel movie called Primer that included the immortal line: "Are you hungry? I haven't eaten since later this afternoon."
Primer was complex, cerebral and absorbing; comparisons were made by me and others to Darren Aronofsky's Pi and Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation, but really it looked and felt like nothing else. Carruth's reputation grew year by year as it became clear that he had no immediate follow-up (one project was reportedly abandoned) and so our excitement at the arrival of this second film was extreme: it was rumoured to be an epic scientific excursion into altered states, a rhapsody of ideas, a visual...

Shane Carruth made a splash in independent cinema back in 2004 with his directorial debut Primer, a mind-bendingly complex time travel drama concerned as much with the ethical dilemmas of temporal displacement as the technological breakthrough itself. After that Carruth dropped off the map. Though many thought he was becoming a Terrence Malick-like reclusive figure, the filmmaker was in fact trying to launch his ambitious follow-up A Topiary. The project fizzled despite high-profile support from Steven Soderbergh, but Carruth was undeterred. He's returned almost a decade on from the Primer release with Upstream Colour.
The one-line pitch describes the film as the story of "a man and woman drawn together, entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism", but that barely scratches the surface of this dense, mesmerising and meticulously crafted work.

Shane Carruth burst onto the scene in 2004 with his intricate Science Fiction drama Primer. The complexities of that film have propelled an endless amount of analysis and debate. It is the type of time travel movie that does require you to do ‘diagrams with straws’ to completely understand everything that is going on. Carruth showed with Primer that you could explore big ideas with a limited budget. Nearly a decade later he has finally come out with his highly anticipated next project. Upstream Color shares many similarities with Primer. It ventures into the genre of Science Fiction with a unique concept rooted in a surreal reality. There is a multitude of moving parts that cause you to constantly play catch-up, and it is evident that...

Making a film that delights in its own ambiguity without alienating its audience is a tricky art. For every viewer who fell in love with the wilfully mind-boggling Donnie Darko or The Fountain, there's another who gave up long before the end credits and posted an angry IMDb diatribe about their ordeal. The key to success often seems to be emotional reality, and Shane Carruth's second film - following on from his equally challenging 2004 debut Primer - has it in spades.
Here are the things we can be certain of in Upstream Color. A young woman, Kris (Amy Seimetz) loses almost everything after being kidnapped by a thief (Thiago Martins). He drugs her with a worm-like parasite that reduces her to a brainwashed trance state, and keeps her prisoner in her own home.

Fans of Shane Carruth’s directorial debut Primer – a low budget sci-fi flick that not only earned the filmmaker the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Film Festival, but a reverent cult following – have had to wait patiently for nine years to finally witness the talented director’s return, with his sophomore feature Upstream Color finally upon us. Now with a degree of pressure placed upon him, and an expectant audience in place, Carruth has remained loyal to his provocative, enigmatic style of filmmaking, presenting a beguiling and elusive romantic drama that will certainly divide opinions.
Defining Upstream Color or attempting to divulge any information about the narrative is no easy task, as a film that is almost like a cinematic puzzle, with a variety of images and concepts that come together to form this quite frugal piece of cinema. At the heart of the tale is Kris (Amy Seimetz), a...

The Sundance London Film and Music Festival returns to the capital this weekend and the lineup of film and music events looks to build on the solid foundation established last year.
It’s an exciting time for Independent film with the trailblazing success of the Sundance festival in Utah sparking off dozens of initiatives, the Raindance festival is a notable and vibrant example, and Sundance London is looking to do more than replicating the success of its American cousin.
When we reported on the lineup we singled out Michael Winterbottom’s The Look of Love, a biopic of self-styled King of Soho Paul Raymond, and Shane Carruth’s Upstream Color, his highly anticipated follow-up film to 2004′s Primer. However there are many more excellent films playing across the various strands and we wanted to shine our spotlight on some of the films to look forward to.

Chicago – Can a film be more poetry than prose? We’ve certainly seen masterpieces that defy easy plot recap like Terrence Malick’s “Tree of Life” and David Lynch’s “Mulholland Drive” but Shane Carruth takes the concept a step further with his daring, mesmerizing “Upstream Color,” a work of art that will infuriate as many as it enraptures. Blending “Walden,” science fiction, romance, and issues of control vs. free will, “Upstream Color” is like a classical composition with themes that repeat but no actual lyrics. It’s a film that I wouldn’t blame anyone for hating. However, I can’t wait to talk about it with those who love it like I do.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
“Upstream Color” opens with a series of confusing images that set a tone before we’ve even met the lead characters. A man carries papers that have been crafted into strands that look like DNA.

I considered writing a review and then writing a follow-up piece concerning Shane Carruth's sophomore effort Upstream Color, but couldn't quite find a way to do one without doing the other. Therefore, the result is the following, 1300-word stream of consciousness of which I hope makes, at the very least, a modicum of sense. Upstream Color is only the writer-director's second film following 2004's time travel mind-bender Primer and it's sure to confuse audiences on far greater levels than its predecessor and it sounds like he's going even grander, at least in scope, with his next film, The Modern Ocean, which deals with shipping routes, competing corporations and I'm sure multiple metaphorical levels of thinking, or, at the very least, a straight-forward interpretation of today's shrinking world. And so, to Upstream Color, a film I took to be entirely metaphorical, though told as something of a horror, romantic, sci-fi thriller.

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
Spring gets a raw deal. This year it lasts from March 20 through June 20, yet we’ll be hearing about the summer movie season throughout May thanks to big films such as Iron Man 3, The Great Gatsby, Star Trek Into Darkness, Fast and Furious 6 and The Hangover Part III. (Spoiler alert: a couple of these are on the list!)
I will admit I was darn near heartbroken that Spring Breakers fell just outside the cutoff. If it hadn’t exploded into three theaters on wintry March 15, the trailer ensured I’d have hustled to get this list out last week (something I wasn’t compelled to do for Admission, The Croods, or Olympus Has Fallen). Thanks to the wide expansion, however, I was able to see – nay, experience – it on Friday. Harmony Korine transported me to this neon, Natty Ice-fueled American dream hellscape,...

Fruitvale became the first Sundance film to win the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award for U.S. Dramatic film since Precious in 2009. Fruitvale tells the story of Grant’s last 24 hours alive, as he attempts to become a better father, a better boyfriend, and a better son and friend. “It’s about human beings and how we treat each other,” said Coogler, “how we treat people that...

Carruth’s Vexing Symphony of Imposted Phantom Memories
It’s been a long eight year’s since the superb time traveling Pandora’s box that was Primer took home the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance back in 2004, but writer/director/actor/cinematographer/composer Shane Carruth has not hung up his filmmaker hat just yet. His sophomore feature, Upstream Color, is an enigmatic love story that rests on the ledge of science fiction and bathes in the memories of cellular connection. Now, like the film, this description is heady, but fairly accurate. Carruth wants to explore the nature of our perceived world through the eyes of people who have lost theirs, forced to start anew, and he does this with wicked intelligence and fearless conviction. *Note Updates in next blog: Sundance By Numbers Update
Originally this report used a horserace as its metaphor. It was designed to see who was ahead of the others and who was lagging behind. U.S. talent agencies were increasingly acting as producer reps and thus inserting themselves into the sales of U.S. rights, an activity formerly the exclusive domain of international sales agents who would map their entire international strategy for sales, using the U.S. sale as a marketing tool for other sales. Now the race between producer reps and international sales agents for representing films, primarily at Sundance and Toronto is tracked in the By Numbers Report.
The report tracks which agents and which international sales agents are selling the most films, which titles are selling best, which distributors are buying the most, and any other noteworthy “races”, e.g., how many films are by women, Asians, African-diasporites, or are about such subjects as Jewish, Glbt, politics, whatever.
This year’s Cannes saw the number of women directors fall so drastically (from a steady 10 – 13% in festivals during the last few years), that an outcry was heard from professionals in the industry. Sundance significantly ups this figure. This year out of 16 fiction features in competition, 8 are by women. Of Sundance’s 113 features, 37 are by women which means 33%. We hope this is a trend and not an anomoly. Only time will tell. According to San Diego State University’s Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film, only 5% of the 250 highest-grossing films last year were directed by women.
Over time, the reports spot trends in the business of buying and selling, especially during festivals like Toronto and Sundance.
With time, we may find the number of Asian, Asian-American, African diaspora, Middle-Eastern and female directed films impact the marketplace itself. For that reason, these reports will continue to be offered to film professionals. The criterion are not set in stone but depend upon the moment.
Sundance By Numbers
If there were a Sundance Institute Performance Metric, a measure of its activities and performance, inwardly focusing on the performance of the organization, would show a high value of performance against customer requirements and value. Its performance metrics would prove it to be very healthy and consistent with the six criteria: time, cost, resources, scope, quality, and actions.
Bravo Sundance! On all fronts it is carrying through its original purpose and vision.
Out of 12,146 features and shorts (429 more than in 2012) submitted this yearincluding 4,044 feature-length films and 8,102 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 2,070 were from the U.S. and 1,974 were international. 113 features were chosen. 98 of these are world premieres. 33% of these are directed by women.
This year half of the 16 narrative fiction features in competition are directed by women. In the 2012 festival, only 3 of the 16 dramatic competition films were made by women. Overall, 33% (37 out of 113) of the Sundance titles are directed by women.
For the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, 113 feature-length films were selected, represented films were selected from 12,146 submissions (429 more than for 2012), 98 feature films at the Festival will be world premieres.

Number Of Producer Reps Repping U.S. Rights
What shows up most on this scorecard is the prevalence of the talent agencies and other “producers’ representatives”. In those “good old days” of Sundance before “Sex, Lies and Videotape” alerted Hollywood that there was some capital to be made in Park City, Sundance gave a home to the original visions of a few independent minded filmmakers, and there were no terms to describe “producer reps”. International sales agents (when these films had any such representation, which was also rare) did their work without deferring to dealmakers in Hollywood. And, as I said, these films usually did not have international representation. That is why the newly emerging acquisitions executives went to Sundance looking for films that they would not find in the existing markets (Cannes, Mifed or Afm).
Anyway, here we are today and here are the numbers:
There are about 12 Producers Reps. The newest fold in the relatively new “mini industry” of representing producers to the U.S. distribution community is that now, instead of one producer rep per film, often two competitive agencies might rep the U.S. rights as you can see in top scorers CAA, Wme or UTA’s lineups.
Producer reps do their best work in Sundance and in Toronto. They usually represent the producer to help make a lucrative U.S. deal. After the heat is gone in Sundance and Toronto, the producer reps usually fade away from the deal making, leaving the unpicked-up films in a limbo until some distributor finally makes a deal with the producer or the international sales agent directly.
In terms of capitol, while there is no official count, it is said that last year $30 million in deals were done at Sundance. If this is true, is it made primarily by the producer reps? What percentage do they get from the deal? Does this mean filmmakers have to have CAA rep them to break out of the gate? (The answer is no). Agents taking on the job of being producer reps are doing so because they have helped with packaging and/ or financing the films they are repping. Sometimes talent takes lower salaries when they work in indies and the agents must get as much back as possible.
It is not necessary to have an agent, there are other types of producer reps, including attorneys who act as attorneys but sometimes seem to be producers reps like Cinetic’s John Sloss, or Linda Licther, or Donaldson Callif who has 11 films in Sundance and 2 in Slamdance this year. There are also independent producer reps who are hungrier than the major agencies who must quickly earn their 10% (or not) and move on. These producer reps tend to work year round with the films they represent. Submarine, Preferred Content and Ronna Wallace’s Eastgate are the most important ones today.

Robert Redford, President & Founder of Sundance Institute said, “Every great film starts with an idea, and it is a testament to artists that they continually find new ideas, new stories, new points of view and new ways of sharing them, year after year. We look forward to hearing from these artists not just through their words and images onscreen but also through the larger dialogue they create with audiences at our Festival and beyond.”
John Cooper, Director of the Sundance Film Festival, said, “The films, both documentary and narrative, selected for our 2013 Festival have a particular immediacy and fearlessness to them showing us that independent film is as vibrant, creative and relevant as ever. Filmmakers are telling raw, powerful stories that are sure to create new energy in audiences and communities across the globe in the months to come.”
For the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, 113 feature-length films were selected, representing 32 countries and 51 first-time filmmakers, including 27 in competition. A selection of films from the 2013 Festival will also be presented at the second Sundance London film and music festival, April 25-28 at The O2.
Keri Putnam, Executive Director of Sundance Institute, said, “Each year at this time we look forward with great anticipation and excitement to the discovery of new voices at the Sundance Film Festival. Apparently writer/director/actor/caterer Shane Carruth has been watching plenty of Terrence Malick movies between 2004′s “Primer” and his latest, “Upstream Color” (his first movie since “Primer”), because this second teaser trailer for “Color” screams “Malick”, especially the director’s recent “The Tree of Life”. Mind you, not that that’s a bad thing. Give it a watch. I think it might intrigue you. (Or not.) A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism. Amy Seimetz stars opposite Shane Carruth, the two making up the “man and woman” who are “drawn together” in that “ageless organism” mentioned above. It also stars Andrew Sensenig and Thiago Martins. In theaters (probably not any near you, unfortunately) on April 5th,...

We’ve seen the first trailer for Shane Carruth’s Primer follow-up Upstream Color since the Sundance line-up announcement, and today we get another.
While the first glimpse sold itself on some startling and wild imagery, this one is fixated on the romantic relationship between Jeff (Carruth himself) and Kris (Amy Seimetz) that is the film’s core.
Second teaser, also called ‘Starlings’ adds much more dialogue as our main protagonists converse, questioning ‘where they will go.’
Carruth stars in the film, which he also penned, alongside Seimetz, Andrew Sensenig and Thiago Martins that will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January before hit theaters on April 5th 2013.
Check out the trailer that continues to make you anxious and uncomfortable and wholly intrigued, altogether.

One thing’s for sure: you can never accuse writer/director/actor Shane Carruth of making films just for the sake of a buck. Almost 8 years after his feature film debut, the excellent low-budget time travel drama “Primer”, Carruth finally returns with “Upstream Color”, a film that he wrote, directed, and stars in. If you liked “Primer”, I don’t see how you cannot get excited about this one, too after viewing this teaser trailer. So what’s it all about? Glad you asked: A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives. Yeah, exactly the kind of abstract synopsis I would expect from the guy who gave us “Primer”. The film also stars Amy Seimetz, Andrew Sensenig, Thiago Martins, and is set for a limited theatrical release April 5th,...

In the film “A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism.” This trailer doesn’t really give much of anything in regards to the film’s plot, but it teases.
The film stars Shane Carruth, Amy Seimetz, Andrew Sensenig, and Thiago Martins.
Upstream Color will premiere at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival in January, then a theatrical release on March 22nd.

Just one day after news broke that Primer writer/director Shane Carruth had made a new movie called Upstream Color and it was premiering at the upcoming 2013 Sundance Film Festival. And, now there’s a teaser trailer to go along with it.
The follow-up to Carruth’s 2004 time travel film stars Carruth himself, Amy Seimetz, Andrew Sensenig, and Thiago Martins. Judging from this trailer alone, Upstream Color looks equally intriguing and sounds anything but mainstream.
A new poster and a batch of new stills from Carruth’s new film have been recently revealed and you can watch them all below.
The title ‘upstream color’ might be referring to ‘an esoteric biopharmeceutical term that describes impurities present early in the processing/manufacture of a chemical,’ or looks like director did cocaine. However, the trailer isn’t a spectacular, but it does a job of teasing the wonderfully strange and perplexing world that Carruth has crafted.

If you were that expecting the first teaser trailer for Shane Carruth‘s newest film to answer any questions you may have about the filmmaker’s first project since he gave the world Primer, well, you might want to go back and watch Primer again, just to remind yourself what you’re dealing with here. Carruth’s latest film, Upstream Color, will premiere at Sundance in January, and while the project certainly didn’t need to put out such a stunning, unsettling, foreboding, intriguing, and just flat out well-made first teaser trailer to get cinephiles on board with the new film, we’re not complaining that such a teaser trailer exists. After the break, get a look at what Carruth has cooked up for us this time and, don’t worry, you don’t need to avert your eyes. Carruth pulls triple duty on the new film – writing, directing, and starring in it – and he’s joined...

I don't normally watch trailers, but seeing how I had a hard time making heads or tails of Shane Carruth's Primer, I figured the trailer for his new film Upstream Color wouldn't exactly give away much, especially since the synopsis certainly doesn't: A man and woman are drawn together entangled in the life cycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives. The film is the first from Carruth since Primer was released in 2004 so to say it has been some time is quite the understatement and this trailer leaves a lot to the imagination, but certainly is intriguing if not entirely baffling. Carruth stars in the film, which he wrote and directed, alongside Amy Seimetz, Andrew Sensenig and Thiago Martins and it will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January before indie distributor Erbp releases it...
