“Sherlock” producers Hartswood Films have posted revenues of £51.7 million (61.6 million) for the last financial year.
Net profit for the year came to £7.8 million (9.5 million), a result the company’s directors said they were “very satisfied with,” although the financial report notes that gross profit margin dropped from 29 to 19 compared to the previous year.
The decrease in gross profit margin was put down to “a change in mix of income from the previous year, with proportionately less income arising from redistributions, and more income arising from development and production activity.”
The accounts, which cover the year ending March 31, 2022, were filed with the registrar at Companies House in December 2022.
As required by Companies House, the financial report also addresses the current risks in the market, with Hartswood defining them as “the increased pressure to find available studios and talent; pressure from commissioners and audience expectation driving budgets ever higher without increased available finance,...

The way that high-end drama is produced in the UK, including on shows such as The Crown and Game of Thrones, is set to change after the British Parliament made a number of recommendations in a wide-ranging review of the television business.
The House of Lords, the upper chamber of the British Parliament, has recommended changes to high-end TV tax relief, which subsidises big-budget dramas filmed in the UK as part of a review on public service broadcasting from its Select Committee on Communications and Digital.
The committee has also made a number of recommendations about the terms of trade – the framework that allows British producers to keep hold of IP and rights – and listed sports rights but has avoided plans to introduce a levy on global Svod services including Amazon, Apple and Netflix operating in the UK.

The Crown producer Andy Harries has claimed that the “power of British television has essentially moved to L.A.” with the growth of streaming services such as Netflix and Amazon.
But the founder of Sony-owned Left Bank Pictures said he was still “optimistic” about public service broadcasting in the UK from the likes of BBC, ITV and Channel 4.
Harries was speaking in the House of Lords Select Committee on Communications as part of their inquiry on public service broadcasting in the age of video-on-demand. He was speaking alongside Dan Cheesbrough, commercial director at Sherlock and Dracula producer Hartswood Films.
The pair were asked about the possibility of imposing trading requirements on the SVODs, the importance of owning IP and why younger audiences were eschewing traditional linear broadcasters.
