After news broke that HBO was set to make a limited TV series based on Bong Joon Ho’s Oscar-nominated thriller Parasite, the #bonghive came alive asking how the series would follow the film and how it would deal with the ending’s dark twist.
The WarnerMedia-owned network is leaving that question up to Bong Joon Ho and Adam McKay, who are set to start working on it in March, with HBO President of Programming Casey Bloys telling Deadline that it’s a “gift” to work with the pair together.
“It’s exciting that you have Bong on board and also Adam McKay. To work with them individually would be a gift but to work with them together, working on what this could be, I’m going to follow their lead. A limited series based around the critically-acclaimed South Korean film “Parasite” is in the works at HBO, Variety has confirmed.
The film’s director Bong Joon Ho and “The Big Short” and “Vice” helmer Adam McKay are both in talks to executive produce the series. It isn’t clear as of yet whether the series will be a direct English language remake of the film, or some kind of spinoff.
“Parasite,” which recently won the Golden Globe for best foreign language and is considered a potential frontrunner for best picture at the Oscars, tells the story of the poor Kim family who, one by one, infiltrate the domestic lives of the wealthy Park family. However, as in most of Bong Joon Ho’s films, things take a twisted, sinister turn, throwing the Kims’ perfect plans off the rails.

HBO is in talks for a series adaptation of director Bong Joon Ho’s acclaimed thriller “Parasite,” TheWrap has learned.
Bong would serve as an executive producer on the adaptation alongside “Succession” producer Adam McKay. Talks are ongoing, and creative details have not been fully worked out, including whether or not the potential project would be in English or Korean.
A major awards contender this season, “Parasite” has already picked up a number of major awards since winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival last year. At Sunday’s Golden Globes, where the “Parasite” was also up for directing and screenplay awards, Bong took home the statue for Best Foreign Language Feature.

In a twist that would feel right at home in “Parasite,” Bong Joon Ho and Adam McKay are joining forces for an HBO limited series based on the Palme d’Or-winning thriller. The South Korean auteur and McKay are currently in talks with the premium cable network and Cj Entertainment, the film studio behind “Parasite.” IndieWire reported last year that Cj Entertainment was eyeing an English-language remake of “Parasite,” but at the time it seemed like such a remake would be a feature film. Now it appears Bong is eager to adapt “Parasite” as a limited series. McKay has a history with HBO as the producer of “Succession.”

“Borders are collapsing all around us,” says producer Janet Yang, who programs the Asia Society’s U.S.-Asia Entertainment Summit conference next week in Los Angeles. “That process is being driven by changes in content and technology.”
The summit this year has notably broadened its focus from one on U.S.-China relations to one that examines the entertainment business to a wider U.S.-Asia perspective.
The conference’s altered angel of attack may reflect a waning American interest in China, now that Chinese firms are no longer buying up Hollywood corporate assets at inflated prices.
And with the polarizing effects of 22 weeks of anti-Beijing protests in Hong Kong, and a year-long U.S.-China trade war, a China focus might also be too sensitive. U.S. entities such as the NBA, Quentin Tarantino and “South Park” have all clashed with China in recent weeks.

Exclusive: Like Crazy director Drake Doremus is to direct romantic-drama Aurora for Korean production and distribution powerhouse Cj Entertainment, I can reveal.
The Handmaiden and Snowpiercer backer Cj, which is ramping up its multi-territory production slate, is developing, producing and financing the movie, which is being scripted by Salvador Paskowitz, co-writer of The Age of Adaline.

When a young man comes into his life with a mysterious connection to his past the two develop an uneasy relationship, causing them to question their identities and their past lives.
Producing for Cj Entertainment will be Tae-sung Jeong, CEO of Cj Entertainment, Francis Chung, VP of Global Co-Productions and Head of U.S. Production as well as director Doremus.
