March was supposed to be a big month for National Lampoon.
The content production company that hung out an “Under New Management” sign last year had scheduled a series of 50th anniversary celebrations this year designed to spur its revival. The plan was to use podcasts and live events to introduce a new generation of subversive comedians affiliated with the brand name that helped launch the careers of John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Chevy Chase and others.
One by one, the comeback events carefully plotted by veteran producer and executive Evan Shapiro were canceled. National Lampoon had planned to make a splash at the SXSW festival with a series of live events. A re-imagined version of National Lampoon’s Off Broadway show “Lemmings” was set for showcase performances at the Public Theater’s Joe’s Pub venue on March 14-15. But none of that came to pass as the...

America's Got Talent is live for the first time in season 12, and what better way to celebrate the move to the Dolby Theatre than by going live ourselves here at BuddyTV? So we're live blogging the first group of 12 quarterfinalists that's set to hit the stage in hopes of nabbing one of seven spots in the semifinals.
Many thanks to the esteemed Derek Stauffer for filling in on the recap last time, though I'm happy to have missed it considering the atrocious decisions made by the judges. Magicians Henry Richardson and Will Tsai join Tom London as the most egregious cuts of the season -- meaning I'm in favor of the yet-to-be announced wildcards all being from the same genre, with wistful longing for comedian Harrison Greenbaum and singer Darcy Callus, and in favor of not one but two choirs!

Stand-up comedy has always been predominantly a straight man’s game. And because of that it has always been a treacherous place for Lgbt audiences. Let’s face it, “gay panic” and straight men’s squeamishness with homosexuality have been go-tos for guaranteed barroom laughs for decades.
Gay jokes may still be low-hanging fruit for straight comics but in recent years there has been a pronounced shift in the way that the broader culture frames its discussion of gay people. This article is a survey of recent “gay” material from popular straight male comedians. Some of the routines discussed here will be offensive to some readers. Some of them are offensive, period. But I’ve chosen to highlight comics and routines that I feel signify a shift – however slight – in how gay people are discussed in straight stand-up. Some of these men seem to sincerely support gay rights and gay people,...
