Very few directors have ever had the kind of run Rob Reiner did as a director between 1984 and 1992. Think about it. This is Spinal Tap, The Sure Thing, Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, Misery and A Few Good Men. Surely, that run alone would be enough to solidify him as one of the greatest Hollywood directors of all time? Those movies are so good it almost doesn’t matter how much money-losing crap he puts out now…and there is a lot of it… and North isn’t even the worst of it! So how did this man go from making a few great movies that defined and elevated our pop culture on so many different levels to suddenly pumping out nothing but heartless, soulless political flicks (did anyone see Lbj?) and rom-coms that are neither romantic nor comedic?
So, how did this jack of...

Michael/Mike "Meathead" Stivic (Rob Reiner) called for a very particular type of performance. Archie and Edith Bunker's son-in-law on "All in the Family" was the progressive foil to the Bunkers' bigoted paterfamilias, a member of the Baby Boomer counterculture (back when that was a thing) who rallied against the conservative Greatest Generation beliefs championed by Archie. But at the same time, Mike was one of those well-educated liberal white guys who still struggled to recognize his own ingrained prejudices -- particularly when it came to the women in his life -- and was often guilty of being more concerned with feeling morally superior than figuring out how to actually bring about the social change he professed to want.
Reiner would eventually prove himself capable of handling this knot of contradictions, but it took him a couple of tries, much like "All in the Family" itself. As he once recalled...

Rob Reiner Pays Loving Tribute To ‘All In The Family’ Creator Norman Lear: “He Was My Second Father”
Rob Reiner, who rose to fame playing All In The Family‘s liberal firebrand Michael Stivic – or Meathead, to Caroll O’Connor’s Archie Bunker – has paid tribute to Norman Lear, the man who created that launching pad and one of television’s most impactful and enduring sitcoms.
“I loved Norman Lear with all my heart,” Reiner tweeted this morning. “He was my second father. Sending my love to Lyn and the whole Lear family.”
Reiner’s father, comic icon Carl Reiner, died in 2020.

Maybe this time it’ll go up to 12.
Castle Rock Entertainment, the Rob Reiner-run production shingle that has been keeping a very low profile for well over a decade, surprised the film world yesterday with the announcement that a sequel to “This Is Spinal Tap” is in the works. The company is self-financing but will bring the package to the Cannes Film Market to secure foreign distribution. Perhaps not coincidentally, Cannes has programmed the 1984 original for its Cinema de la Plage sidebar, in which movies play for free on the beach a few steps from the Palais du Cinéma.
All the key players, including director Reiner, who also appeared in the mock documentary as filmmaker Marty Dibergi (“let’s boogie!”), Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer are on board for what will likely follow in the original’s footsteps: a largely-improvised satire of the music industry. Donald Trump and Maga loyalists are calling actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner a “meathead” for his praise of President Joe Biden’s administration, seemingly unaware (or potentially disregarding) that Reiner’s liberal character from the ‘70s-era sitcom “All in the Family” was called that by Archie Bunker, the show’s overbearing, antagonizing bigot.
Earlier on Friday, Reiner tweeted, “It’s long past time that we acknowledge the sure handed, effective, grace under fire, success of Joe Biden’s Presidency.” The tweet set off derision from Trump fanatics and the nickname “meathead” — originally directed toward Reiner’s Michael Stivok, Bunker’s unemployed son-in-law of Polish descent, in the series — quickly began trending on the platform.
Just as swiftly as Reiner received rebukes from the Maga camp, Twitter users chimed in to point out the irony over the choice insult. “The right wing just can’t help clowning themselves every time,” one social media user wrote.

The death of Jean Stapleton's Edith Bunker on All in the Family — or, more precisely, it's spin-off, Archie Bunker's Place — remains one of the most profound and moving events involving a television character ever aired (and our subject at hand). It was, of course, only one of numerous TV series to experience such a major cast shake-up, which, over the years, has taken place for a wide variety of reasons. And, naturally, the on-air effectiveness of those departures has varied from show to show, depending on the creativity of those involved and the circumstances surrounding their absence. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) From 1974 to 78, NBC aired the sitcom Chico and the Man, starring comedian Freddie Prinze as Chico Rodriguez and Jack Albertson (Willy Wonka's Grandpa Joe) as Ed Brown, who work together in a garage in East L.A.
