Usher is giving R&b music the spotlight during his Super Bowl Lviii halftime show on Feb. 11.
In a Good Morning America interview on Friday, he told reporter Kelley Carter that when planning his show, he thought about artists of the past “having to, at some point, go through kitchens to even be able to perform for an audience. They had to leave back through that same door, you know, fearing for their lives as they went to the next state to do the same thing,” he said.
“So, I’m coming through the front door with this one.”
The singer will draw upon his own catalog and works by friends and mentors in the industry .
“I didn’t start where I am now, and I didn’t get there by myself,” he said. “So, everybody that has been a part of it, I’m carrying them with me. All of my fans,...

The embattled Hollywood Foreign Press Association has admitted its largest-ever class of new members. The 21 recruits cap the group’s six-month process of reforms amid a “commitment to diversity and inclusion.”
The new group is a diverse one, with 48% identifying as women, 29% as Black, 24% as Asian, 29% identify as Latinx and 19% as Middle Eastern/North African. See the list below.
“We are thrilled to welcome these new members into our family,” said HFPA President Helen Hoehne. “We are building a new organization, one that is not focused on fulfilling quotas, but instead has diversity and inclusion at its core, has ethical conduct as the norm, and has people of color involved in every aspect of the Association — from membership to executive leadership. That is how we’re growing an inclusive environment, and for us to make this much progress in six months is a testament to our membership and our dedication to building something better.

With just a week until the 93rd Oscars ceremony on April 25, Disney is kicking the synergy machine into high gear in order to support the telecast on ABC.
The challenge is steep: As Variety recently noted, ratings for all major awards telecasts this year have been down between 50% to 60%, making a similar decline a real possibility for the Academy Awards. But the longer-than-usual Oscar campaign trail at least may have stoked some interest, along with the curiosity factor of how this year’s show — held partly at Union Station, partly at the Dolby Theatre and also remotely elsewhere — might look.
The Walt Disney Co.’s Oscars synergy plans get underway on Sunday night with the live telecast of “American Idol.” On the show, the top 12 contestants will perform Oscar-nominated songs from the past, while judge Lionel Richie will open the episode by singing “Say You, Say Me” — which earned him...
